Why Not? The IS Micro Laser...
« on: 25 February 2019, 18:53:00 »
So, looking at the Clan ER Micro Laser, it (finally) struck me... why isn't there an IS version?  With one third two-thirds the damage, but the same range and heat as an IS Small Laser, it sounds reasonable enough:

Code: [Select]
Heat Damage Range Weight Space Tech Level
  1        2 0/1/2/3 0.25   1      C

Honestly, the ONLY thing I can see this being used for is fine tuning TSM.  Thats about it.Machine guns are more effective at infantry, regular smalls are just better.

For twice the weight, regular Smalls should be better.  It also has use to fill in those odd quarter tons when using Fractional Accounting.

The one I came up with ages ago was worse, with 0/0/1(2) range and 0 heat.

Could be used as a mining tool, tho, or as a Battle Armor weapon.

At 0.25 tons, it should be 2 damage, not 1. Two of them is the same mass as an ISSL, with the same range, but it's an extra slot and an extra heat. That should buy you an extra damage.

Alternately, 1 damage and no heat.

I was using the clan Micro Laser as a yardstick, which is how I ended up dialing it down to 1 damage.

Change it from 1/2/4 to 1/2/3 range (or even 1/2/-), but cutting damage in half is just too harsh IMO.

Difficult. You gotta make it not completely eclipse the machine gun.

doesn't the SPL pretty much already do that in every aspect but heat?

For twice the weight, regular Smalls should be better.  It also has use to fill in those odd quarter tons when using Fractional Accounting.

A quarter of a ton of armor was what I used to put on 'Mech designs in the days before they started to round up off to the half-ton.
