This can best be interpreted as indicative of how bored I truly am right now. If you enjoyed it or didn't, let me know. I might get bored again.

By the end of the Third Succession War, conventional military formations had largely ceased to exist. While most houses still retained divisions, at least in name, their force levels had been so depleted that divisions typically served as sector-level administrative formations. The annihilation of jump-capable warships -- as opposed to combat dropships, formerly relegated to escort and screening roles --- and the loss of most heavy industry were further indications of how far the once-mammoth military-industrial compleses of the Inner Sphere had declined.

MILITARY ORGANIZATION AS OF 3000

Forces Armées de la Soleils Fédérés/FASF (Armed Forces of the Federated Suns/AFFS)

The FASF had seemed to be the best-prepared and most doctrinally-flexible of all of the Successor Lord militaries at the start of the Succession Wars, but a series of shattering blows suffered during the First War gutted it and killed many promising young leaders. Forced into a vicious cycle, the AFFS was able to turn back Kuritan and Capellan advances into the Crucis heartlands only by constantly accelerating academy programs for young officers, eventually even being forced to field Unités d'entrainement et de formation [training units] as line formations in lieu of a final year of coursework for military academies. These formations, composed entirely of officer-trainees, often suffered heavy losses and inculcated an unfortunate contempt for staffwork. Consequently, throughout the latter portion of the First War and the following two wars, FASF combat units often displayed a contempt for death coupled with poor logistics and artillery planning, as well as an inability to correctly execute the complex double envelopments desired by FASF GHQ. Although their shock attacks were often irresistible, and their tendency towards aggressive counterattack (to prevent enemies from claiming even an inch of "Davion soil") frequently thwarted Kuritan or Liao attempts to gain ground, the FASF consistently displayed an inability to exploit success on a strategic level or deal more than sharp tactical defeats to their enemies. A cult of heroism also arose, with an obsession on individual prowess in battle, exacerbated by Davion propagandists.

During this era, the FASF underwent a protracted reorganization. In keeping with their tradition, they had long called regiments (108 'mechs) "battalions", saving the term regiment for an administrative grouping of battalions around a common name. This inculcated a fierce regimental pride, but also a parochialism that resulted in much ignorance of all-arms operation. Despite this, the FASF maintained a number of permanent "Groupement Tactiques", where a 'mech regiment was supported by armor, infantry, and artillery. These powerful formations typically had a noble patron of great prominence (many were the property of the First Prince himself), and though sometimes accused of holding divided loyalties, their comparatively lavish scale of equipment (though far from homogenous) made them forces to be reckoned with. In theory, two of these formations could combine to form a "division mécanisée" under a single commander, but issues of seniority and the very poor Davion command and control systems available at the time greatly hampered their effectiveness when so employed. In theory, six GTs were to combine on a full-scale offensive operation, divided into three divisions and commanded by a corps commander. In practice, the FASF never had enough trained staff personnel to make this a reality. All of this was a great change from the prewar era of standing divisions,  corps, zone de défense polymorphe (essentially an army commander controlling multiple corps within a military administrative region), and the three front commanders (Terra, Combine, and Confederation).

Notable units of the era included the various Bataillons de Davion Gardes Groupement Tactiques (including the Davion Gardes Cuirassiers), frequently formed into one of the three Household Divisions for major operations (and, more rarely, into the 1er Davion Corps); the 17e Hussards de Avalon GT, commonly used as a "fire brigade" or raiding force for the Duke of the Combine Front; and the four Fusiliers de Syrtis GTs, the formation of two more GTs of which was a constant goal of the Duke of the Confederation Front, in order to form a regional Corps-level formation.

I'm thinking the issue lies more with the huge wall of single-spaced text, rather than the intermittent machine-translated French.

No, no. I don't speak French. The French in it was machine translated. But ouch, is my writing that opaque?

You do speak in fluent history book. I liked it, but it's not for everyone.

I liked it

I wonder what you might come up with for the other BattleTech armed forces

To be fair TPTB, they have managed to slide into some of the fluff the idea that all Successor State militaries at least are built on a background of aping the SLDF to acocunt for their standardisation as compared with the 21st century we see around ourselves

The Lyrans could be an interesting combination of Scots-Irish and German with conflicting organisational structures leading to/compounding the problems they experienced

The FWL might show the tensions between Federal and National Guard local forces with more friction than I have picked up in my reading

The Capellans might well have a lot of penal units and I have visions of, post 4th Succession War, the Capellan Political Commissars having to restrain the officer corps from tactically inept suicide tactics as a neat reverse of the normally portrayed relationship between those two groups

Finally the Kuritans: perhaps take them back to a mish-mash of Samurai stereotype and the European Medieval and have their Lances replicate a Lance Fournier with a Samurai Knight leading with a small unit/tiny combined arms support unit of other 'Mechs, infantry and technician

Much like a Knight and his vassals?

I didn't have any trouble reading it and it's an interesting take. Does this indicate you're seeing the Federated Suns as not having made the canonical gains at the expense of the Capellans during the first three Succession Wars?
