Come meet the new boss, same as the old boss

It is interesting.  In canon the Clans and Comstar were often able to leave the existing government in place.  Ghost Bears were also noted for not leaving extensive garrisons in their wake.  To us in modern times this should be a recipe for massive insurrection movements.  Yet I can find very few instances where planets did.  Trondheim from my research in canon was a completely quite world.

I think it's more three centuries of planets changing hands on a semi-regular basis: the Ghost Bears were probably less intrusive than most of the Successor States when it came to the day-to-day running of the planets they took, at least at first. Let people know that, for the most part, tomorrow will be pretty much the same as today and yesterday, and they might not feel the need to rebel.

I mean, new flag/money/anthem? That's just Tuesday for many worlds in the Inner Sphere.

Possibly not even that much of a change. The tallest flagpole will get a new banner, but maybe not the planetary. A new type of money, perhaps, with local overstamped bills remaining in circulation, until the printer starts making new bills glorifying the new overlord. The Anthem may change, but that may be it.

Karl was riding a desk while he still recovered.  This was fine with him.  He wasn't some macho thrill seeker.  Not really anyway.

It was strange seeing how hands off this Clan Ghost Bear was.

Even now nothing had changed yet.  It was still a bit odd that there was only fallout for the prison break he took part in was he was a periah in the department now.  Which was fine with him too.  Meant he didn't have to fake polite conversation anymore and could slack off even more.  He'd told Grace to do the same since everyone seemed willing to chalk it up to her being an impressionable rookie and it'd make it easier for her to keep working this way.

Well one thing had.  He had a new boss.  Katya she was called.  If she had a last name she wasn't sharing with anyone.  She was maybe in her early thirties but seemed to be sore about that even though it wasn't that old.  Hell everything seemed to be a sore spot with her.  That she had to be here instead of out fighting.  That she now had to oversee a bunch of worthless freeborns.

The disdain behind that word made it clear it was supposed to be an insult and even Karl didn't like the way she said it.

Karl decided the only way to survive this was to make her quotas and keep his head down.  Which even slacking off as much as he had he'd managed easily enough.

He did wonder if she would ever trust him out in the field though after he recovered.

For now he had reports to finish going over.

If the bears found them after the prison break, that sounds quite bad for their chances going forward...

As Karl finished the last report before his meal break he saw Katya looming over him at his desk.

"You must be wondering why you are still alive after your little stunt.  Many in the Clan would have happily killed you for such insolence.  But your Yakuza friend made a couple interesting points when we decided to have a few words with him.  He pointed out how you used to be a soldier.  How could you not want to have a chance to go out in a blaze of glory he said.  The other thing he said was there are fates worse than death.  I see it in your eyes.  This is such a fate for one such as you.  I also know that your sense of self preservation will keep you from taking your own life or setting up a situation that will result in your death on purpose.  I will find it interesting to see how long that lasts."  Katya had a disturbingly deep voice for a woman.

"I can not say you are entirely wrong.  Still seems odd to me that you would keep me on in this role though.  Certainly there could be others."  Karl had to catch himself.

He was still getting used to his new boss and her weird rules about contractions.

"It was debated but in the end it was decided there may just be hope to redeem you.  As much as your act of defiance angered us it also showed you had dedication and skill.  That you were the one to open the emergency shelters in this part of the city also showed you have devotion to duty.  Plus this way we will have an easier time to watch you in case we are wrong.  If we are there will be no more chances."  Katya growled.

Karl could only sit in silence.

The logic was a little weird but he understood it.  The subtle reminder of what he already knew to be true wasn't lost on him either.

He must REALLY want to punch her right about now... that he's thinking about how to get out of her last statement is all the more interesting...   ^-^

[Author] About to road trip for a month and the laptop is not as comfortable to type on so updates will likely be even more sporadic during that time.  But maybe I can remember where I was going to go for a conclusion to this story or figure out a new one because to be honest in all the distractions I've forgotten my original idea in that regard.  [/Author]

Karl drank the questionable vodka in his glass.  Since he'd been cleared for field work Karl had a tail.  The tail was completely obvious and utterly hopeless at the task but Karl stopped intentionally losing him after the first day and instead decided to toy with them.

Which brought him to the dive bar he was in now.  It was known to be frequented by those with certain sexual tastes.

What threw Karl was his tail didn't seem phased by the offers he was getting from the gay men Karl sent his way.

Was his tail into other men?  It'd be just his luck.

Since today's game was a bust Karl decided it was time to go home.

Karl nearly lost his tail on accident twice on the way back to his apartment.

At least the man was worth an absurd laugh if nothing else.

How hands off the new overlords were being was still strange to Karl.  Even the FedCom meddled more when taking over a new world.  What was helping was that word was spreading that the pirate bands in the area were stomped out by the Clans.

Which was another shock.  There were more than one Clan coming into the Inner Sphere.  Hell the local infonets were full of interesting new reading slowly being brought in by their new overlords.

It was still clearly a carefully calculated effort to not release too much information too soon and not upset the local populace at the same time but anyone with a brain could see the veiled hints of what was eventually to come.  And he didn't like it one bit.

[Author]  Okay so on top of the laptop not being as comfortable to write on I had rather unreliable internet and no good place to set up to do much in the way of writing.  Now that I'm back on my desktop I'm just finding myself inclined to bring this story to a close.  I find myself unsatisfied because I know I wanted to do more with it but I got too distracted and forgot plus I never work this stuff out very far in advance nor keep notes/outlines around.  [/Author]

Karl looked out the window.  What was happening out there was such a complete farce.  Comstar had finally shown their true colors.

The last two years had been rough.  He never recovered from being seen as a pariah in the department but Katya did not care as long as he did his job.  Eventually his shadow decided he did not need watching anymore too.  So boredom had set in until this morning.

He began to wonder how the hell Comstar had managed to survive this long.

The combination of hubris, idiocy, duplicity, and hell an extra helping of idiocy seemed appropriate with their Operation Scorpion.

Adam was approached by an Adept but what the Adept hadn't counted on was the Oyabun of the local Yakuza clan had managed to carve out his own redemption as a respected but unorthodox merchant with the Clans and thus was more than happy to discretely let Karl know so Karl could let Katya know.

"I am surprised with you Karl.  With the size of our garrison here you probably could have used your influence and that of your friend to allow Comstar's little uprising to succeed by getting more of the citizenry onboard.  Why did you not?"  Katya asked him as he stood in her office.

"I never trusted Comstar.  Consider that they were more than happy to sell out the Inner Sphere to you.  Add in their arrogance and you get a recipe for inevitable betrayal.  Hell that it took them this long to realize that your goal was Terra all along also indicates a special kind of stupid.  I am too old to go in for that combination anymore."  Karl shrugged.

"Yes your age is a shame.  I think continuing to serve in your current role is a fitting reward for what you have done for us."  Katya did not snap at Karl like she usually did when the issue of age came up but she still seemed to bristle a little.

"Fine by me.  Something tells me life will be a lot more predictable after today."  Karl accepted the seeming truce offered by Katya.
