The founding Khans of Clan Burrock were both from the Rim Worlds.

The priority for freeborn warriors meant low warrior participation from some Clans. There simply weren't enough Jaguars or Vipers along for the ride to form a distinct unit and go out - they mostly sent technicians although some warriors may have gone along and wound up in other units. Most of the small units are dominated by but not wholly from one clan, thus Cranston Snord (a Wolf) rising to lead the Goliath Scorpion dominated company. So the Turkina might have a Smoke Jaguar along simply because he didn't have enough of his Clan for them to form their own (or the saner Jaguars weren't interested).

Same for the Coyotes (although in their case mostly that their Khans figured they were already overstretched and didn't send much of anyone).

Burrocks as the Rim Volunteers as their founding Khans, the Polczyk twins, were from Rim Worlds Republic.

Takehiro 'Taco' Uchimiya, SHD-2H Shadow Hawk 'Taco', Crimson Oasis Trading Company

Didn't I come up with the idea for all of the clans to contribute to the Dragoons in a previous tribble?

Isn't Coyotes one of the three clans that are actually bad and not just negligent to their freebirth alongside Jaguar and Viper?

Definitely lower third, probably not as bad as either of those two. Maybe par with Falcon?

As far as I remember no, they are nearly on par with other two. "Nikky said that lower castes should eat shit, so we MUST comply" more or less. Coyote caste structure is the MOST rigid out of the clans, even if they don't specifically go out of the way to show their superiority to lower castes. So on 1 to 10 Clan scale of shittiness to freebirth while Jaguars are 12, Vipers and Coyotes are still straight 10. When Falcons are no higher than 8.

Nicholas Kerensky snarled, grinding his teeth, as he stalked about the ilKhan's office. Dealing with the Wolverines should have been easy. He would point up their liberal policies as a violation of the Way of the Clans, demand their submission. When they refused, he would turn the other clans against them and wipe them out. Make an example to cow the other dissident elements into line.

Except that it was clear, now, that it wasn't going to work.

Part of him wanted to blame the navigator. The woman was Guild trained and certified, even if she was getting on in years now. The ilKhan demanded and got the best personnell, of course, and Tara was one of the best in what had been the Star League Navy. Misjumps happen, he reminded himself. This one had cost him eight months.

Eight months in which the Wolverines' methods had, quite simply, made their success clear to the other Clans. And they were spreading. Jade Falcon. Snow Raven. Sea Fox. Ghost Bear. Goliath Scorpion.

One Clan, he could crush. Two, he could condemn as corruption by the wayward Wolverines.

Six? No. It was too late, he would have to find another way.

On October 8, 2823, ilKhan Nicholas Kerensky was pronounced dead after a personal Trial of Grievance against Khan Sarah McEvedy, Clan Wolverine. On January 1, 2824, after nearly three months of politicking, the Grand Council ceased deliberations on the topic of electing a new ilKhan. With no external enemy requiring the coordination of the Clans as a whole, and clear evidence that various personalities' attempts to gain power would simply cause further disruption, the Council voted to declare the office of ilKhan vacant and to remain so until a super-majority of the seated Khans accepted a motion otherwise.

Tribble #686
Romano Blows A Fuse
Who was it that recruited, presumably vetted, and worked the closest to Justian during his time with the Mask? Tsen Shang. All it takes is Romano remembering all of this at the wrong time and Shang is dead.

It wouldn't even take her remembering it, Chandra Ling remembering this in the in the aftermath of the 4th and Shang is dismissed for rather obvious cause, which promptly removes him from Romano's circle of contacts and so many interesting things could happen.

  Odessa and C* shipyard/base.

Had a humorous thought about misdirection if LC did find out about the C* base in Odessa and LIC leaked information to DC and FWL that it was the source of all Lyran lost tech.

The shenanigans of one of the Lyrans opponents attacking C*, and LC having moral outrage at C* for a secret base in the LC territory, with warships.

All while DC/ FWL is being interdicted, their regiments destroyed in space by warships when they attack Odessa..

Which possibly secondary effects open up gaps in the border security/ destruction of top tier enemy units.

C* is outed as having warships, and all inner sphere becomes more hostile towards C*, while LC force toaster boys to leave Odessa and demand it is not destroyed or looted when C* evacuated.

Edited because the number failed to post.

Anastasia Kerensky's last recollection before waking up with her 'Mech half-wrecked was of fighting Alaric Wolf. She hoped he was as badly off as she was right now.

Actually, on hiking into the nearest town to make contact with someone that could provide her the parts to fix her 'Mech, she really hoped he wasn't marooned here too... because it's 3014. The last thing she wants is that fool changing the past for his purposes when she had a perfect chance to change it for hers. Of course, that does mean that parts for her 'Mech are going to mean settling for Spheroid succession wars era parts.

Getting arrested by the local militia, ecstatic that they'd captured the Black Widow wasn't part of her plan.

Getting rescued by the Black Widow Company was a step up.

Getting arrested by them on the grounds she'd been pretending to be their captain was not. It wasn't like she'd ever claimed to be her illustrious ancestor.

And now she was sat in an interrogation room, facing an amused looking Natasha Kerensky. "So, 'Tassa Kay' was it?" The legendary mercenary leant forwards with a predatory air. "We cross-checked your DNA against our records and it seems you are close kin to me... so what the hells are you doing here and not in the homeworlds?"

Well, this was going to be fun to explain...

Tribble 688 Silly version
After watching BUGSY MALONE I asked myself:
What if Max Liao at the wedding after Hanse told his wife that she gets the CC, Max grabs the next piece of cake and hurls it at Hanse. Misses, but hits Mel. Now we know from "The Sword and the Dagger" that Mel has an interest in pranks, so what if Mel grabs also pieces of cake and throws them at Takashi and Janos. And before you can say Hello! everybody is throwing cake at everybody else.

Tribble 688 Serious version
What if Max had not only grabbed pieces of cutlery and plates and thrown them at Hanse and Mel, maybe even climbed atop the desk and charged them?

Tribble 690?  (I see two 688s)

When the Wolf Dragoons make their last supply run they're met not with Ulric Kerensky's new orders, but by a handful of ships that were able to successfully quarantine themselves when the Society's anti-warrior caste bioweapon was accidentally released before they worked out how to prevent it from mutating to effect everyone.

The Clans are gone.  All that remains are the Dragoons, a handful of Goliath Scorpion seekers, and some merchant and technician caste jumpship crews.  Maybe there are some survivors, but landing to help them would be suicide.

It's 3020 and the Dragoons have no replacement warriors and no mission, but they still have Hephaestus and no reason not to put what Clantech they can into production.  They could play kingmaker or they could fragment or they could conquer some periphery hole to try to build a new home while the Inner Sphere continues to burn.

It does, with no more Clans and no forthcoming invasion, before they lose the station.  This puts everything up in the air, and every way it could possibly land would be an interesting AU in and of itself.

Tribble #691:

December, 3067.  The eve of the fourth Whitting Conference.

A bone-weary Victor Steiner-Davion looks out of a window, up through the snowy night at the stars.  After the unrelenting grind and conflict of the past... entirety of human's interstellar existence, he quietly wonders if any of the faiths have a point.  If there is someone looking down from the proverbial "up there," someone who gives a single, solitary damn.

And, past the stars, past the snow and an outer sphere of glass... Tommy Westphall stares down, not really comprehending what he sees.

Been sitting on some ideas for while, finally getting around to sharing them.

Trebble #692 Gift of the Mother
"What are you doing HERE?" Screamed Katherine.

"Why so surprised sis? The same legal trickery you used to dissolved the Sarna March is that witch brings me here. Remember that regiment of 'Mechs mum gave dad? Well I shouldn't need to remind you that they came with substantial land holdings, landings substantial enough to grant me eligibility to be elected to the Estates General, which what certain individuals have arranged. Turns out your decision of have the Alliance succeed from the Federated Commonwealth, well, it isn't all that popular, at least at the higher levels, and then there's the question of if it's even legal."

Yeah, the fact that Katherine could the Lyran half of the FedCom out of the FedCom strikes me as strange, the secret part of the treaty that she claims enables it undermines the entire rest of the treaty, and secret laws don't strike me as all that legal to begin with.

Trebble #693 Looting
Turns out that Rhonda's little treasure hunting expedition on Volders in the form on Lyran Anti-Looting regulations and she'll have to turn what she found over to the JAG to avoid getting into trouble. How will "supplies, ammunition and more than three dozen assorted Star League vehicles and 'Mechs" affect the NAIS efforts to decipher the Helm Core?

Trebble #694 A Matter of Inches, Part 1
An Inch up or down, left or right can save a life, or end one
Justin kills, mortally wounds, or otherwise permanently removes Tsen Shang from the picture during their gun fight at the end of the 4th SW, similar effects to my #686, Romano dies without issue, meaning that Candace has no choice but to seize the throne when her sister dies in 3052, making the CC part of the FedCom. This means she's one of Victor's advisors, causing all sorts of butterflies.

Trebble #695 A Matter of Inches, Part 2
An Inch up or down, left or right can save a life, or end one
Jeanna Clay isn't killed near the end of the 4th SW, but rather gravely injured, and Kathrina can't really cover this up, and as the person behind this plot is head of the Free Skye movement and he likely used Free Skye resource to set the whole thing up, yep that's going to mess things up.

Honestly I'm a bit surprised something like this didn't happen OTL.

Trebble #696 To A Galaxy, Far, Far Away
Activating the Fortress Walls transports the Fortress Republic To A Galaxy, Far, Far Away.

Time period is up to the author, but just prior to the Yuzhan Vong invasion could be interesting. Not my favourite setting for a SW Crossover, but still, speaking of that setting however.

Trebble #697 Danzig Detached.
Somehow the Danzig system from Starfire, during it's cut off period during the Theban Crusade, gets transported into the Tamar March shortly before the Invasion, the Clans are in for a shock.

Trebble #698 Hanse Uses A Doom Stack
After taking Tikinov, Hanse decides the best option is to simply throw the forces gathered there straight at Sian and force the entire CC to surrender.

These are some tribbles I've had on my mind for years.  They're variations on the same theme:

Tribble #699:

The newly-embossed sign on the door read J. MCKENNA, FLT. ADM..

It's a good start, James McKenna mused idly, looking out the window of the Navy Headquarters building's top floor.  After savoring the view for a moment, he turned back to his terminal, looking over the files he'd been studying earlier.  His new top-tier clearances gave him access to all of Naval Intelligence's takes (such as they are, he thought wryly) on the worlds outside the Alliance perimeter. (It was information that was often weeks or even months old, to be sure, but it was still information.)

Information that would be invaluable when the time came to bring the colonies back into the fold.

Such as, say, information on worlds and figures that were becoming rival centers of power.  Take this Ozawa Mercantile Association, for example.  Not really a military power, but an organization with economic -- and thus political -- clout.  They were something to be watched.

The OMA, however, was not James' primary concern today.  New Samarkand was. (Also, it was kind of funny how a world named "New Samarkand" had become so dominated by Japanese culture.) Or, rather, its new planetary leader.

"Kurita Shiro," he murmured to himself, his eyes scanning over the open file on the screen. "Pretty young.  Just like me." The biography NavInt had assembled was little more than a capsule summary, but it hit what he felt to be the important points: Cunning, ambitious, skilled at both literal and figurative dueling, ruthless and remorseless (almost amoral) in the pursuit of his goals.

"Too much like me," he added with a rueful chuckle. "Though I'd like to think I have some standards..."

The NavInt analysts had him pegged as someone to watch, someone with the potential to be a serious eventual threat.  But James knew.
All the signs were there.  Kurita Shiro already was that threat.  This was someone who dreamt of empire.

It took one to know one.

James closed his eyes for a moment.  He'd known that, at some point, he'd have to do something like this.  Probably more than once.

That didn't make his hands feel less dirty.

He finally opened his eyes, then nodded to himself, reaching for the intercom. "Hector?"

"Yessir?" his aide replied crisply.

"Please page Colonel Ludmilova of the Eighth Marines, and tell her I want to see her in an hour.  I have a mission for her team."

Tribble #700:

The Star League, that dream of the empire of empires, dies stillborn as Ian Cameron is unable to gain support.  Even Albert Marik, that great statesman and idealist, calls it "a beautiful dream that could never thrive in the light of day." Now, Ian Cameron is forced to consider less pleasant methods to stave off the Hegemony's eventual resource depletion.

Fortunately for him, there is one target that presents itself.  One House that has consistently behaved belligerently and violently towards its neighbors.  One House that has open proclaimed universal domination as its end goal.

(The fact that the Star League would have had a similar role for House Cameron is, of course, completely immaterial.)

Cameron sends out feelers, first to Albert Marik, then Alexander Davion, and finally Tracial Steiner.  It might be a lie to call Marik enthusiastic, but he can see the benefits.  Davion and Steiner are far closer to enthusiastic (although the latter takes some armtwisting to sit at a conference table with The Marik).

A month later, the four heads of state meet in an uncharted star system on the edge of the Hegemony/Lyran border, with their senior military aides.  The operation that they begin planning here will be known to history as Case ASCALON: the joint invasion, conquest, and partitioning of the Draconis Combine.

Tribble #701: Dreamland Madness

Prologue: Waking Up

‘The Dreamlands used to be a realm of fantasy and magic, or so we were told. Where dragons and giants, and unicorns and faeries roamed. A thousand years ago. Things the dreams of children are made of. There are giants still, in the Dreamlands - and unicorns, and faeries. And elves. I know, I’ve visited their villages. But humans changed, and so their dreams changed as well. Children still ride unicorns - but their dragons don’t spit fire but shoot missiles at you. And when they need help to fight off a nightmare, they don’t dream of gallant knights, but of BattleMechs protecting them. And so I didn’t ride into the Dark Hordelands on a unicorn steed but in the cockpit of my dream ‘Mech.’
Diary of Catherine ‘MadCat’ Steiner-Davion

*****
‘The prognosis remains unchanged: Patient S-D shows significant brain activity but no reaction to external stimuli. Multiple scans and biopsies haven’t born results as to the cause of this condition. Now, as ten years ago, when she went to bed as normal but never woke up again, medical science cannot offer any answer to her family’s questions.’
Private notes of M.D. Phil Baker, NAIS Medical Center, New Avalon, 3048

*****

Dark Horde Territory, Dreamlands, December 23rd, 3048

“Cat! To your left!”

“I see it!” Catherine had seen it - she was already swinging the right arm of Dragonslayer around to target the ugly bird-like evil ‘Mech trying to ambush her. She pulled the trigger as soon as the crosshairs aligned over the centre of the enemy ‘Mech, and her Pontiac 100 autocannon spat fire while she feathered her jump jets and glided to the side.

The enemy’s lasers and missiles missed, but she didn’t - her volley punched through the ‘Mech’s cockpit. “Enemy ’Mech down!” the computer told her - as if she hadn’t seen it herself.

“Good shot, Cat!”

“Thanks, Kelly. And how did that thing get close without you spotting it?”

“I did spot it, didn’t I?” her friend shot back.

“Almost too late.”

“Must have been protected.”

“Cat, Kelly - we’ve cleared the pass leading to the heartlands.”

“Thanks, Alex!”

Catherine turned Dragonslayer around and started to run towards the mountain pass in the east. This was it - they had pushed the Nightmare Horde back into their heartlands. Now they could defeat them once and for all and end the threat to Dreamland. She bared her teeth in a feral - or so she hoped - smile as Kelly’s Raven sprinted past her. “Watch out!” she told her.

“That’s my job!” Kelly replied. “I spot, you shoot.”

“Stay close then.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll protect you from evil missiles!”

Cat snorted. She could already see the rest of the vanguard of the Dreamland Regiment bunching up in front of the pass. By their best estimate, the nightmare forces had less than a battalion of mixed ‘Mechs left. They had three times their number. Not even the enemy’s cheating technology would save them now!

*****

Cat ducked, Dragonslayer mirroring her movement, when another LRM volley descended on her. Even with Kelly’s ECM working overtime and Cat dodging to the side, a third or so struck, and her armour took another battering. If only “the best ‘Mech in the Inner Sphere”, as her brother had claimed, had some long-range weapons!

She kept the ‘Mech upright and lumbered forward, Kelly’s Raven hot behind her heels. Alex was already shooting at the massive gate to the enemy’s fortress, as were half the remaining ‘Mechs with the assault company.

And the fire was starting to tell! Molten armour was pooling on the ground - she made a mental note to watch out for that when charging in - and autocannon fire pulverised even more. An enemy ‘Mech popped up on the wall, but concentrated fire from the support company blew it apart before it could shoot any of its weapons.

“Right! Top of the wall!”

Kelly’s warning made Cat whirl - and her friend’s lasers marked two arms just reaching above the wall. One of those ridiculous ‘Mechs that could raise their arms far above their head and shoot forward. She hated them! Cat snarled as she fired her own lasers, removing one of the arms. The other managed to fire twice before Kelly and Cat crippled it as well.

A moment later, the gate fell, and dozens of ‘Mechs on both sides opened up on each other. As ‘Mechs started to fall, Cat looked up. The enemy wouldn’t just stand there… Yes! One of those ugly asymmetrical ‘Mechs jumped over the wall. But Cat was ready, and so was Kelly. A burst from her Pontiac stitched a line of dents and holes over the enemy’s flank before Kelly nailed it with a NARC-beacon. A moment later, dozens of missiles ripped the thing apart before it could land.

“Charge!” Alex yelled, and his huge Atlas started running, heedless of the volume of fire pouring through the gate. The rest of the assault company followed, ‘MechWarriors screaming as they closed with the enemy. Alex kicked out, reducing the leg of an assault ‘Mech to scrap before smashing the cockpit of another with his fist, but lost an arm in the process. But Nastajia was there in her Archer, covering him whale he reoriented his ’Mech.

Cat triggered her jump jets and rose on superheated plasma, soaring over the wall - and landing on top of bird-mech trying to flank Alex. Dragonslayer’s eighty tons - well, less now with the damage taken and ammo spent - crushed the enemy’s cockpit under its weight.

She turned, pouring laser fire and missiles into the rear of another enemy assault ‘Mech, causing secondary explosions to wreck its torso. “Hah!”

“Cat! Don’t do that!” Kelly complained. “We need to stick together.”

“I’m in the assault ’Mech,” Cat told her, kicking and pulverising the leg of a light, speedy ‘Mech trying to get into her rear. “You’re in the light ‘Mech”.

But there was the little Raven, squeezing past two grappling ‘Mechs - and shooting both lasers into the enemy’s rear - to join her. Cat finished the wounded enemy off, then turned to face the hangar in front of them. There the enemy’s leader waited, in a ‘Mech as black as his heart. If he had one.

Alexander was facing him, and even with one arm missing and his armour damaged, Cat knew he would win this fight. There was no better ‘MechWarrior in all of Dreamland than Alexander.

The enemy ‘Mech opened fire, fifty tons of weapons fired - but Alexander sidestepped most of them. He could make that ‘Atlas move! And then he charged, shielding himself with his other arm as the enemy kept firing. He lost his left arm as well, but then he was in the enemy’s face, and his kick sent the other ‘Mech sprawling. Before the ugly ‘Mech could regain its footing, Alexander had sent a volley of his autocannon through its cockpit.

For a moment, no one moved. Then the surviving enemies powered down, and the Dreamlanders cheered. After ten long years, the war was finally over. Dreamland was safe again. The nightmares would end. Cat would be able to wake up again.

She took a deep breath and opened her cockpit. Below her, Kelly moved the Raven between Dragonslayer’s legs and did the same. This wasn’t something to be done over comms.

Cat climbed out of the cockpit and triggered the ladder, then slid down to the stump of Kelly’s Raven, where her friend was waiting. “We did it!”

“Yes.”

They looked at each other for a moment, then embraced. Cat closed her eyes. “We did it,” she repeated herself.

“Yes.”

“We can wake up again.”

“Yes.”

She cleared her throat and released her friend. “We… if we can’t enter Dreamland again…” She licked her lips.

Kelly nodded. “Comstar. Standard codes.”

“Yes.”

They had talked about this - ten years was a long time, after all.

Cat wet her lips again, hesitated a moment, then reached out and kissed Kelly, closing her eyes.

And then the cheers she had been hearing turned into loud yelling and beeping and calls for a doctor.

She had woken up.

So, it's a sort-of crossover with the webcomic The Dreamlands Chronicles.

The Dreamlands. The realms where little children go to dream - the dreams of adventure and games they don’t remember. Once they grow older, they stop visiting the realm. Except for a few, who keep visiting - and never wake up. Kali Liao and Katherine Steiner-Davion have spent most of their lives in a coma, dreaming. Little do their families know that they were part of a group of heroes fighting to save the Dreamlands from invading nightmares in a war that went on for years.

Now they have won, and can finally wake up - and return to a universe that’s as alien to them as Dreamland is to grown-ups. A universe filled with tension and a war brewing - and invaders from the Periphery about to strike the Inner Sphere. All the two want is to reunite with each other and live their lives - which would be hard enough for a Steiner-Davon and a Liao even if everyone wouldn’t think they are crazy. But then, those 'Clans' do drive very familiar 'Mechs. And the two are dragged into yet another war. Only this time, not in the Dreamlands, but in a universe where no one takes them seriously - and no one would trust them with a 'Mech, let alone a regiment or two.

It's on my list, so to speak. I just need a free slot - I'm usually writing three weekly fanfictions, more isn't possible.

An interesting tribble indeed!

Thanks!

Alex is the main character of "The Dreamland Chronicles", the other side of the crossover - though in this story, it's an AU where he pilots a 'Mech instead of wielding a magic sword.

Yeah, though I'm not sure how prominent the Fantasy part is. In my first brainstorming, I planned to have Kelly and Cat be able to travel to each other through Dreamland - fall asleep in your bed, wake up in the other's - but I reconsidered. Just having them be elite 'Mechwarriors with a touch of magic at the controls (after 10 years in Dreamlands, fighting 'Mechs) would be enough, I think.

Though the plot's still very in flux. How difficult is it for them to get away from their respective families and link up? And then, once they hear about the Clans, what can they do to save the IS (as they see it)? Return to their families? Loot some stuff and found mercenaries? Try to get their friends from the Dreamlands to help them? They couldn't get many troops that way; most of the population there are dreaming little children, and having dreamland denizens enter the real world might be breaking SoD.
