Fan Made TRO - Project NELSON.
« on: 16 August 2020, 15:35:18 »
Good news! The final and finished version of Project NELSON, a look at expanding the Snow Raven's and giving the 'Naval and aerospace Clan' some actual units of their own, much like Project Zhukov did for the Hell's Horses is now complete.

This has been the work of over a year and couldn't have been done without the support and help of the people involved in it and of course the amazing artists :) The NELSON book is set in the same setting as the Zhukov one, with its somewhat alternate Operation REVIVAL, and the buildup to it. Its an attempt to give the Snow Raven's their own units, as we're told they're the naval clan but we see more Mechs than aerospace assets from them. But don't worry there's also Mech's in here too!

You can download it here

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1juSOnAi7J6PnEOXdnJqELfoAPi5O88lX/view?usp=sharing

And please, any thoughts comments or input is most welcome!

Errata

Saga - Weapon placement should be 2 x ER Mediums in the Left arm, SRM-4 in the left and right torso with ammunition held in the right torso.

Read the fighter section over and I'm a huge fan. I especially enjoyed the Zulu's Inner Sphere codename of "Firefox", glad to see I'm not the only one who remembers it's more than a web browser. I have to ask though- was having "Abandon All Hope" written on the fighter a Space: Above and Beyond reference?  Because if so, awesome.

Yep! Its a nod to Chiggy von Richtoften, the name and the paint scheme with the 'scales' is all a nod to Space Above and Beyond :D With the amount of customisation gone into the paint scheme on the Zulu, that's someone of very high rank.

Welp, I’ve officially got a new favorite OmniFighter.  And considering I usually play Ghost Bear, there’s even a good chance one of my characters could get his mitts on one.

Is there anywhere I can read about how this AU differs from the main timeline? I noticed some things already, notably the Snow Raven fleet subcontracting for the Jade Falcons and a mention of the Hell’s Horses landing on Tukayyid.

I'm really glad you're enjoying the book :) And I am working on a more official breakdown for what my friend and I who worked on this are calling the Zhukovverse. There's more details about the Hell's Horses here - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nZEhDHVnn-dLR8CmwTFdjsNj4hHu4P_M/view?usp=sharing

But I do plan on doing a proper timeline and breakdown.

The timeline (thus far) basically goes as per original history, but with divergences that have knock on effects that are still significant but not HUGE or setting changing. Tukayyid still is a ComStar win, but its far more bloody and there's more Clans involved in REVIVAL.

This is probably the biggest POD (point of departure) from the original timeline (OTL). In the OTL the reserve Clans were the Nova Cats, Diamond Sharks and Steel Vipers, i've added the Hell's Horses to it who are assigned to the Wolf's OZ. So come the Truce, the Steel Vipers are in the Falcon OZ, the Diamond Sharks have claimed the Chainline Isles as theirs, the Hell's Horses have an OZ alongside the Wolf one and the Nova Cats are off to the 'right' of the Smoke Jaguar's OZ.

Very interesting!  I’ll have to take a look at that other file.

Out of curiosity, because the TRO doesn’t say one way or the other- what do you think the chances are of a Zulu or two finding their way into the Ghost Bear touman? Granted the Bears aren’t usually big on new things, but the Khirghiz is getting pretty long in the tooth.  Actually, the Zulu being a Khirghiz derivative might win it some points with the Bears- might seem less like a scary new thing than as an upgrade to something they already have and like.

I also really like the Ravens’ expanded carrier fleet.  It was always kind of a head-scratcher for me why they stopped at two Conquerors in canon when they’re supposed to be Clan Aerospace. In your TRO I wouldn’t be surprised to see them build a couple more Yorks, at the least, to try to give every naval star its own carrier.

Zulu's would probably be slowly spread around, and could be traded with the Bears albeit in limited numbers, yes the Bears and Ravens are 'friends' but this is Clan 'friends' here :p Then again they do help them with the Leviathan construction. They'd probably be more common than the Crow or Navajo outside of the Ravens, as the Crow is in essence a Totem fighter.

Really good product I really enjoyed it.

One really minor criticism and it's purely because it's harder to read as it is right now.

The Moa-class Shuttle it might work better if each variant's set up was set up individually as they have such varied set ups working out whats on each variant is more difficult right now.

In the Snow Raven TO&E in the middle of the book you have one of the Stars Sivallin Cruisers mixed up with the ship classes. Page 41 Circe Battle Star. I’d love a Bloodied Blade class Light Cruiser or a Merciless Intent Light Cruiser.

I skipped ahead to the TRO (AWESOME as usual), but I’ll definitely read the rest later cause I am interested in the AU.

So, I just finished reading Project Zhukov for the first time, and rather than commit extreme thread necromancy by posting on its thread I’d like to offer my thoughts here. Hope that’s all right.

In general: AWESOME! I especially liked the very well done explanation of blitzkrieg vs deep battle.

Favorite bits:
  • The HGG-X99 for the sheer look of horror on some poor guy’s face the first time HH unarmored infantry said “Say hello to my little friend!”
  • The RG-88, or “Where is your cover NOW, freebirth?” I can see a few Horses infantry commanders keeping a couple around just for use as a fright weapon, because once you start shooting people through their cover you’ll flush them pretty quick
  • The Eris and Nike.  “Trothkin, it is a glorious day! Thanks to our Khan we no longer need to WALK every time we don’t have ****** OmniMechs along!”
  • The Haepheastus, because someone finally remembered combat engineering. And I’d like to shake the hand of the Scientist who first handed the Warrior caste a spec sheet calling for “Light Gun System with coaxial backhoe.”
  • The Nergal.  You will die in the shade.

Hehe :D Well if ya like that, you'll hopefully like NELSON. :) The RG-88 and X99 are for Elementals only but yeah they would be terrifying! The RG-88 is, in essence hitting harder than a modern day 20mm round and, it can in theory be fired from the shoulder. I based the RG-88 on this thing - https://imgur.com/gallery/cPcJnlt but just scaled it up for an Elemental to use :D
The X99's based on 'ol Painless from Predator because man portable gatling guns are absurdly cool :D

The Eris and Nike make sense in the context of the changes to the Horses where there's going to be a lot more tanks and less Mechs so an APC to support fast and slower units is needed which also lead to the Ganesha as very large vehicle and yeah, the CEV's were also needed because Tanks just are not as terrain capable as Mechs. The LGS is there to demolish obstacles with HESH and HE rounds, not to fight other vehicles :)
And RE the Nergal, who don't want 90 LRM's firing in support of you :D

HGG-X99 or the RAG (Rotary Assault Gun) is there to spread joy to all your enemies..
RG-88 is there to "Reach out and touch someone, Reach out and just say HI"
Haepheastus, if you dress up the language there a good chance they have no idea what you are saying, and well people don't want to look dumb.
"For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast, And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed:And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill, And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!"

From the fluff I’d expect the -88 to be retired pretty quickly as more AGLs and grenades become available, and it’s a reasonable decision. Objectively, it doesn’t do all that much an AGL can’t, and doesn’t offer indirect fire.

However, I could see a few HH commanders asking and being allowed to keep them, since they now have the whole stockpile of ammo and power packs to draw on.  For the folks that keep it, the value isn’t in anything objective.  It’s in the morale hit it can induce when a bunch of enemy soldiers are hunkered behind a wall, think they’re safe, when suddenly BLAM one of them is blown away through the cover.  It sounds to me like a great way to make your opponents panic and do something dumb.

The 88's got the advantage of range and its got a massively higher velocity than a grenade launcher so you can use it to engage targets at a longer range, and as you said there's the psychological effect of you being hunkered down behind a suitably thick wall and the one of the guys next to you suddenly explodes like a melon lobbed off a 40 story building :p

Is there plans for another book, marauder648?

Indeed, the fluff for which being thought out, discussed and iterated upon and will be focused on the Wars of Grievance which is probably our biggest point of departure from the Timeline as the divergences become more pronounced.

Basic idea is that the Refusal War does not happen per say rather its all the Clans doing a lot of intercene fighting, the Wolves and Falcons still go at one another hard but there's lots of fighting in the Homeworlds and the like as the anger over the failure of REVIVAL, the Truce, and interal factions and rivalries just boils over.

This one won't be focused on any single Clan but there will be more attention paid to smaller ones or ones who like to think they're big fish. One thing to remember is that the Clans are not quite so limited in resources as canon, they're properly exploiting the Tanite worlds and RDB-0411 is giving them more materials, as well as an increase in asteroid mining and the like means less of a pinch on available resources. The big thing holding them back is still basically manpower but I point blank refuse to belive that by 3062 there was only 115k Warriors in total in ALL the Clans. Whilst the Creche/Sibko system is quite brutal that is a tiny number. I'd be more inclined to belive that the number of Warriors was closer to something like 6 - 12 million or so in total from the youngest Sibkin to the oldest Solhama, as well as things like the Blood Spirits armed (totally not a militia) Infantry.

I say this because it would be impossible to hold their OZs and homeworlds with just 115k warriors between ALL the Clans. A fairly small Clan like the Blood Spirits might have 70 - 80k Warriors in total, but again this is EVERYONE, the number of trueborn front line troops would be far smaller as they make up their bulk with their 2nd and 3rd line troops.

The Jags might also be kinda similar, fairly small number say 80k  - 120k max but only 15- 20k at the most are front line troops and at the start of REVIVAL the Clans didn't deploy all their forces and kept the vast majority in the Homeworld. But once REVIVAL started getting bogged down they bring forwards more troops, mostly garrison forces and the like to hold their worlds, keeping a fairly small fighting strength deployed.

Think Refusal War rather than Reaving, the Reavings were an almost insane frenzy, this isn't going to be anywhere near that bad.

Not to sidetrack the discussion but one thing mentioned in one of the Shrapnel stories was the Ghost Bears utility of local law enforcement to keep well, law and order, essentually they too know they haven't got the people to do it so they recruit locals to serve in a capacity below the warrior caste

The same story they also use Ice Hellions I believe to supplement garrisons as the Ice Hellions know they've no chance of an invasion corridor

Basically yes a Clan might have twenty clusters but that's troops to fight a war the story hints at conventional powers used by the Clans to keep the peace

One thing that I always have to remind myself out of a hundred worlds in BattleTech one might have multiple nation States the others will live under one rule their entire lives and because of the size of their nations outside attack may never come

With that sort of power a big standing army isn't as big a requirement as you may think instead law enforcement or paramilitary forces are more important

I remember reading the novel,  Initiation to War set on Epsilon Eridani.  It's set during the Chaos March aftermath as the world is trying keep the piece. The book betrays the world rifled with smaller counties and other small city-states.  At one point Shu County (lead by Capellan descendants) had to wage war against its neighbors who were trying to do the same to them.
