First Annual "Stompy Atlas" Awards Nominations
« on: 29 December 2020, 14:26:26 »
Hello all,
I've noticed we don't seem to have any awards for fanfiction around here. I'd like to fix that? Therefore, I am inaugurating the "Stompy Atlas" awards for fanfic excellence!

 Rules (there's always rules):

 1. The author must have begun work on the nominated story in the 2020 calendar year. Stories that do not meet this criteria are not eligible. A story doesn't have to be completed to be nominated.

 2. A copy of the story must be posted here and the copy posted here will be the "nomination copy" for all intents and purposes. Please include the author's name and a link to the story with your nomination.

 3. You may nominate your own work (Exception, Best Fiction of the Decade).

 4. All nominations must take place by 0000 EST, January 15, 2021.

 5. Crossovers must be crossed over with at least one fandom of any kind that was at some point in print or in some form of popular media.

 6. Newcomer nominations are for first time authors only that have not submitted any Battletech fanfiction to this board or any other major board (Fanfiction.net, Spacebattles, The Sietch, ourbattletech.com, etc.)

 7. Best fiction of the Decade? The story must have been written in the decade 2010-2020. It must be original work and not a revision from a year outside this period. Incomplete stories that have not been updated within a year are ineligible, but active incomplete stories are. In this category, no one may self-nominate.

The Prize? Bragging Rights for a year, and perhaps I'll ask if someone can gin up a nice graphic for the nominees and winner's sig? Also, all yearly winners for Best Story will automatically be nominated for Best Fiction of the Decade to be held in 2031!

Can one nominate multiple authors?
* No, FASA wasn't big on errata - ColBosch
* The Housebook series is from the 80's and is the foundation of Btech, the 80's heart wrapped in heavy metal that beats to this day - Sigma
* To sum it up: FASAnomics: By Cthulhu, for Cthulhu - Moonsword
* Because Battletech is a conspiracy by Habsburg & Bourbon pretenders - MadCapellan
* The Hellbringer is cool, either way. It's not cool because it's bad, it's cool because it's bad with balls - Nightsky
* It was a glorious time for people who felt that we didn't have enough Marauder variants - HABeas2, re "Empires Aflame"

The Administrator/Adjudicator run with Sharron Ngo.

Cannonshop's output during that run was phenomenal.

Will add links shortly.

Well, there are several possible contenders.
- Cannonshop, for his body of Ngoverse work.
- Yourself, for Clover Spear.
- This Was Easier on the Tabletop, by Chris O'Farrell

Hard to choose between these three.

And can we have a "Best New Talent for 2020" category?  A Warrior's Family by HCF05 is my nomination if that is supported.

Alas, And I Feel Fine by Liam's Ghost technically qualifies with a single story post in January, and Birds, Snakes, and Aeroplanes only has a few story posts, otherwise they'd be right up there.

Okay, nominations for best fan-fiction of 2020: hard to pick between the following:

- Clover Spear - the Story of the '56 War, by Panzerfaust150
- This Was Easier on the Tabletop, by Chris O'Farrell
- and the many and vigorous Ngoverse stories by Cannonshop, exemplified by the Administrator series.

Best newcomer of 2020: starting in April of this year, I nominate A Warrior's Family, by HCF05.

Worktroll, as much as this pains me, I will be removing myself from the running. I appreciate the nomination, but it wouldn't be right and it violates rule 1. That said, I appreciate the nomination.

While I agree Clover Spear is a good story, PF dq'd himself with his first rule.
Why does everyone "Fire at Will"? Is he really that bad of a person? And what did he do to make everyone want to shoot him?

The core rules for interacting with me:

1.) I am not a moderator, game developer, member of Cryptic staff, relative of any members of cryptic staff, not close friends with anyone involved with the game, not a distributor of product, not an employee, employer, professional reviewer, or member of any powerful conspiracies.  What I think is my own and has no impact on the Battletech franchise in any way, shape, or form.

2) If you don't like something I've said, refer to rule 1.  If you do, god help you poor soul, you're screwed up.

Who Goes There? by JA Baker

It started in 2017, but as a series of individual stories, I'll argue it can stand as my nomination.

And the Administrator storyline by Cannonshop. Although, this may also be in a multi-story category.

As it's an anthology work, I'd say pick an individual "chapter" posted in 2020, rather than the work as a whole. Because even I'll admit, some parts are better than others.

there's a certain amount of world-building that goes into establishing a good fan-alternate setting.  JA Baker's work is a lot like mine (though a bit better), in that a lot of what he's doing requires establishing differences in the setting from the Canon, and a lot of what makes his quality is that he's very consistent in his delivery of those changes.  2ndACR also did a lot of ground-work grunt-work in his to make it feel 'fleshed out' and consistent.

Based upon feedback, I have cut down the anthology's nomination to just one story. This was really hard as I had 7 make the shortlist.

My nomination from the Who Goes There? anthology by JA Baker is...

Based upon feedback, I have cut down the anthology's nomination to just one story. This was really hard as I had 7 make the shortlist.

My nomination from the Who Goes There? anthology by JA Baker is...

Out of curiosity, what were the other six?

I'd like to toss in some nominations:

State of the Union by Drakensis

I believe the initial post limits nominations to stories started in 2020. Both State of the Union and Welcome to the Jungle began in 2019.

Bah. In that case put "Davion & Davion (Deceased)" down for "Best of decade".

I second that nomination.

did I mention wanting to nominate "To reach the unreachable Star"?

because I do. that one, and "Light in the Dark".

Absolutely agree with this one

For 2020 fanfic I would also nominate:
The Little Things Give You Away by kelgar04

I am sad that the Quest wasn't included, it started in 2018 & ended 2020.

Going break me adding more stuff to that monster!!  :D

It had semi-ending.  PAUSE would be best way to describe it.  I'm hungry get Fate Can Be Cruel, so we can clans get their teeth kicked in by ironic enemy no one saw coming.  ;D
