Important People. (Alternate Ngoverse}
« on: 23 December 2020, 04:21:48 »
Patrick looked older.

She was going to have to get used to the differences now-they were separated by six years of life, six years of development, and six years of aging.

"Penny." she said, "You let people call you Penny."

"I let your mom call me Penny, I let Patrick call me Penny, and I let you call me Penny.  Everyone else better use the correct form." Penelope Falcone was like a miniature Cimbral in some ways, and in others, she...wasn't.  "What?"

"You remind me of..someone else." Amanda Ngo confessed.  "I guess I guessed right, he would've liked Cimbral."

"If he did, I would have to knock her teeth in.  Patrick might be your brother, but he's mine." Penelope affirmed, "I'm territorial."

"That's sometimes a sign of insecurity, at least, according to the mandatory psych classes." Amanda teased.

The Aeropilot phenotype trueborn gave her a dirty smirk, "You'd know." she said,  How's it feel, graduating six years behind your twin brother?"

"Weird as ******." Amanda said, "How do I look?"

"Well, the ribbon rack would draw looks anywhere but here..." Penelope adjusted the dress uniform overgarment so that the split collar didn't look awkward around Amanda's helmet ring.  "Your rig is good.  Real gear, not that dress uniform shit.  You realize you are the only Midshipman Graduate who will be graduating into an O-2 slot, right? and you have the combat patch, some of the instructors do not have that these days."

"I know, how does the braid look?"

"Snappy.  Silver and Black, right number of loops, and...ooh...yeah, don't want you dinged for that, pull your hair aside on the Left?"

Amanda did so.  Penelope stepped up on the storage locker, leaned forward, and..

"OUCH!!"

"Silver is for surviving a sinking, right? and Gold for shipwreck?"

"YES!! jesus!! what the hell?"

"Earring." Penelope said, "it is in the Uniform guide...yep, I got it right on point for you, now do not be a baby about this, leave it in for a couple of days, then follow the regulation care guide if you do not want to have that stinging sensation again when you have to put one in for State occasions."

Amanda winced and straightened, as Penelope took the opportunity to alter her hairstyle to better display the earring.

"There we go...Yarr."

"You're lucky I like you, Penelope."

"No, I am lucky your brother loves me...there we go. Dress and press, you are ready to walk the deck to receive your commission now."

"When are you two registering your partnership?" Amanda asked.

"Soon.  Your mom insists on a public wedding.  I swear, if I could make you take that Heir Status back, I would."

"Hey, screw that! since I'm the spare, I get to go out into the deep black where nobody has walked...as soon as we aren't being hit with restraining orders from the Estates General, or Archon's orders, or diplomatic harassment..."

"yeah. I am learning." Penelope said, "If we weren't hiding half the budget in research and science..."

"We wouldn't have a fleet anymore. I know."  Amanda scowled,  "It's cutting into my ship-time as it is.  LCN's Hours restrictions are getting burdensome, and Adam is really cranking hard on the distance limits." she shook her head, "why aren't we just doing it and asking for permission?"

"because we're already in trouble for doing just exactly that?" Penny asked, "Cheer up, I hear a rumor there's another exchange slot with the Falcons coming up, and they're looking for expeeerience..."

amanda snorted. "It's time at sea, sure, but christ, their doctrine! I'd be stuck all day doing reports and paperwork waiting for something to happen."

"Falcon boys are fit, and if I do say so myself, we bred for good looks."

"Between you and mom, is everyone trying harder to get me laid than I am?"

"Probably." Penelope agreed amiably.  "People are still worried about you, Amanda.  You were catatonic for two months after you got back from being in hyperspace for six years."

"Yeah...I know. people are worried about my head, which means my chance of getting a ride of my own is pretty goddam slim."

"Your mom will not pull strings to get you a command, Amanda. you know that."

Amanda nodded, "I know.  I have my guild cert card and I can't even get a navigator slot!"

"Well, maybe after today, you'll have an easier time of it." Penelope offered, "If not, I can always ask you to come over to R&D and do some real research..."

The graduation ceremony didn't take a LOT of time.  compared to the other academies in the Commonwealth, the Spider Moon academy's graduations are relatively spartan, a result of the origin of the official 'Academy' status happening in the middle of a war with a high demand for bodies in a hurry.

Speeches are made, names are called, certifications stamped and certificates handed out, another speech, and then a buffet prior to the First Report.

First Report is when you walk out of the meeting hall at the end, down the corridor, to the Personnel Office and get your orders.

"Ngo, Amanda Roshak."  she said.

"Let's see here...Leutnant...yeah, you've got orders, including TDY to Naval Station Gibbs for assignment, congratulations."

"SIR?? I enlisted to Coast Guard!"

"Which is LCN Reserves, you've been activated Leutnant Ngo.  You've got ninety days to report."   The Warrant behind the terminal looked up at her, "There's a couple of space-available slots departing this week, you want to talk to Travel office about getting a spot?"

I get the feeling that some "Important People" want a chance to debrief Amanda, away from home.

Personnel Department, Gibbs Naval Station, Lyran Commonwealth, September, 3097...

"Name and Service Number?"

"Ngo, Amanda Roshak, Ngo537091284AM, sir."

The clerk typed it into his terminal...

"ah, yes...just a moment, Leutnant."  He turned to an associate and they conversed quietly out of hearing for a moment.

come on...

"Referral orders to First Squadron, Tharkad." He said, "You can catch a flight in four days."

"First squadron?"

"Yes.  Congratulations, Leutnant." the man smiled at her blandly.  "Your report location and date are in the orders packet."

The flight chits were for today.

Amanda found herself running to the shuttle pad, hoping to make the transport before it departed.

Headquarters, LCAF Naval Branch, New Triad, Tharkad...

September on Tharkad was like September in Nha Tranh, which is to say, cold, wet, and generally unpleasant.

The difference being that in Nha Tranh, September was early spring, and here, it's early fall.  Amanda stepped out of the taxi, turned, and tipped the driver before hefting her go-bag and approaching the guarded entry.

"Identicard?"

she presented her identicard.

"Orders?"

she presented her orders.

"Stand here..."

she let them scan her, while her bag was passed through a scanner, emptied, and the contents examined.

an enlisted, bored looking, carefully repacked most of her belongings, finding it somewhat difficult to fit everything back in.

"I've got that, Kaporal." she said, emptied it again, and then repacked it in front of them, taking a moment without words to show them how to fold and set each item before closing it.

The enlisted didn't look away the entire time.

"Understand now?" she asked.

"ja, Herr Leutnant."

"Good." she shouldered her bag, and proceeded into the office building.  training standards obviously slipped. she mused, probably shouldn't have tried to show him-if his NCO didn't beat it into his head...

the reception desk was manned by a pair young females.  They were wearing a lot of makeup, and Amanda's first instinct was to wonder how they'd get that complex hairstyle into a helmet in a blow-out.

"I have been told to report to Admiral Kingfisher?"

"Oh! you must be Leutnant Ngo! Floor twelve, use the north elevator."

"Right."

no skinsuits...dirtyfeet navy...

The elevator ride, she was surrounded by officers in shirtsleeves.  It was a little uncomfortable, they clearly didn't understand about intrusions like excessive cologne.  for a fleeting moment, she considered putting her helmet on and sealing up to get away from the stink of bodies covered in chemical perfume.  It was a little...sickening.

the wiser part of her, suggested she should absolutely NOT offer such an insult to the headquarters staff of the Lyran Commonwealth's navy.

Ding! the elevator reached the correct floor, and she walked out onto a floor done out with carpeting and beige walls.  a farm of cubicles to her left and to her right, and glass-fronted offices on the far side.

her out-of-place sensations were screaming now.  Amanda was wearing an overgarment on a skinsuit, with shipboots, carrying a duffel bag, helmet clipped smartly to a buff-white harness, surrounded by shirtsleeves clad LCN staffers.  Her hair was regulation helmet-cut with her earring on display, while everyone (Female) here had some ornate hairstyle that was impractical use of long hair.

settle..settle.  This is rear echelon, not where you're from...  she took a deep breath, and navigated her way through the cubicle farm.

ignoring, to the best of her ability, the stares she was drawing with every step.

"..and I said, He's not going anywhere so drive!"  an older man's voice caught her attention from one of the doors she was approaching.

"Kleiner, that's always the way it is with your stories!" another man's voice was laughingly responding, as a pair of men in LCAF class B uniforms came out.

Amanda snapped to attention as soon as she saw their ranks.

"Hans, five o'clock." the shorter of the two men said.

The taller man, whose name was Kingfisher, turned, and looked her over.  "Ah...can I help you, Leutnant?"

"Sir." Amanda held up her orders like a child's report card.

He took them, and looked at them.  "Well now...you're early." he said, "Kleiner, I've got to deal with this.  Some other time?"

"of course."

"Well, this way."  he said with a gesture.  "I expected someone older."

"Sir?" she inquired, keeping it respectfully brief.

"Your file suggested someone older." he told her, leading her past a desk.

"I was born in '67, sir." she said.

"Have a seat." He gestured, and took a seat himself.  "Hence why I expected someone older."

"I missed a few years, sir." she said.

"obviously." he noted.  "Do you know what we mainly do in the First Squadron?"

"No sir." she said, "I wasn't expecting to be transferred here, and there were very few notes in the briefing packet."

"We handle the Archon's travel arrangements, Leutnant." he told her, "I was looking for a qualified secondary navigator."

"I've got my guild certification, sir." she said.

"I'm aware of that.  You also have combat notations on your file not suitable for your apparent age...or even your chronological age, if this wasn't from an official source I would find it very difficult to believe."

"Sir." she didn't try to defend herself or her file.

"not very chatty?" He asked, "I was inviting you to expand on that."

"Oh, apologies sir.  My last vessel had a..navigation accident that landed us in hostile territory, sir. I was..." she could almost hear the choir in her mind.  "...I was stranded in hyperspace for six years after that, when we tried to jump out, sir."

"How did you get back?"

"With someone else's high risk and great difficulty...and a huge amount of luck, sir." she said firmly.

"But you have seen combat?"

"Yes sir."

He reached into his desk, and brought out a keyboard, then began typing.  "You do understand that you will be in the presence of VIP personnel?"

"Yes sir."

"Good...report to the Tharkad Anchorage, slip sixteen, your ship is the LCS Frederick Steiner...and consider doing some shopping while you're in port, a bit of hair work, makeup, and getting something besides that spacer's bag to wear."

"Sir?"

"This organization exists in part to provide a certain dignity to official events, shipboots and a skinsuit might be fine in the outies, but there are appearance standards to maintain here closer to the core."

He finished what he was doing, and a printout slid from a slot in his desk.  He looked it over, signed it, and handed it to her, "Get something to wear, and do something about that hair."  he held up a business card, "Use this place, tell them Kingfisher sent you."

"ummm yes sir."

Yeah...this isn't going to go well.

Not to mention this kind of feels like Adam is intending to shanghai one of Elizabeth's children as a quasi-hostage.

Or just keep her close to him so she's not off doing Ngo things. Or possibly showing her why sometimes, running full speed isn't the best idea.

Which is to say, the Ngos are all about blowing up the status quo. Which can be good.

It can also get you the First Succession War.

Thnere's a lot to be said for sometimes just stopping and taking a deep breath, especially when your civilization is getting to the same industrial and technological levels that let Mankind shatter himself so completely the last time.

and I think the Ngos don't always realize that, or they have this casual: "So you're running a nation with dozens of different power blocks, just bulldoze through them."

And that doesn't always work--not unless you're willing to start stacking bodies.

Yeah...this isn't going to go well.

Not to mention this kind of feels like Adam is intending to shanghai one of Elizabeth's children as a quasi-hostage.

If he was trying to shanghai her as a hostage, then hopefully he'd have a better crew to meet her.  Adam would have at least a basic briefing about what Kowloon is used to, and try to select people who can help her relax a little.  She wears a spacesuit all the time?  Put her in a low orbit station with plenty of shuttles going up and down so goes to the surface to relax and give reports, where the space suit might not be as comfortable.  She prefers hair that can fit into a helmet easily?  Pair her with ground troops who also like short hair, so it doesn't get caught in equipment.  The goal would be to get her to relax with people in different environments, to get her used to the rest of the Lyran military.

This complete and utter culture shock/cluelessness seems more like foolishness than a deliberate plan

Still, Amanda is going to have a shock on seeing how many safeties are on Lyran transports, while the rest of the crew is going to have a shock when she jumps the ship to a short-duration point to save someone's life. Still, she will likely make the Captain and Nav officer happy by stating for the record that she will not jump the ship without the Captain and Nav officer's approval.  The Nav officer is supposed to have some sort of control over where the ship is going, and the Captain is overall in charge of the ship.

Still, she could have fun doing a few suit prep drills.  Work with the life support systems to vacuum the air out of berthing so it stays near 90% pressure, and put a stink bomb just inside the hull.  The pressure is still high enough no to hurt people, but it will steadily suck the stink bomb smell into the berthings.  That would hopefully teach the crew that a micrometeor could strike at any time, and they need to know where their suits are located and can get into them quick.  She could explain it as 'if the crew cannot take care of themselves, they cannot take care of a VIP in case of emergency'.  Similar to bodyguard systems, where the VIP may have arm candy, but there is a team of people further out who make sure the VIP and extras don't get disturbed.

LCN Headquarters...

"...so where did you send her?" General Rowe asked.

Admiral Kingfisher chuckled, "I sent her to Gagnon's."

"You utter bastard!" Daphne Rowe accepted the glass of scotch, "I wanted to take her there! The poor girl's going to be corrupted in no time now!"

"I doubt that." he said, "but it might get that stick out of her ass.  I swear, she practically vibrated at attention.  I've seen Clanners with more casual demeanours.  Put her on the crew in that state, and we'll be cleaning up the mess from the meltdown in no time at all."

"She came out of their little Coast Guard, her mother is Elizabeth, god only knows what her father must be like at home..." Daphne sighed, "you didn't warn her, did you?"

"I kept that to myself." Kingfisher said, swirling his scotch.  "I would have, mind, if I thought it would be understood.  Poor thing's got no social graces, Daphne."

"Kowloonese." Daphne commented, "how did she look?"

"Like a taller version of her mother, but with green eyes." he said, "I think maybe a less essentially savage version, but they didn't spend much time civilizing that kid.  Your mentor would take one look at her and want to adopt, I think...why does Adam want her in 1st Squadron?"

"He doesn't tell me that." Daphne said quietly, "He did say he wants one of the pair here, and suggested transferring the daughter now that she is no longer listed as 'dead'.  You assigned her to the Fred?"

"Of course!" he said, "It keeps her assigned somewhere, and the ship's undergoing a five year refit, it won't be ready to sail for another twenty four months."

"you could've just had her put dirtside in a staffer outright, you know." Daphne told him.

"If she's like her mother, she'd find a way to get TDY to an active vessel, or get disruptive in the bureau, which admittedly might be very nice in the long term, but His Majesty wants her available for service at-will, and that means keeping her handy.  I'm thinking the timing may be related to His Majesty's November Ball."

"She's almost thirty."

"Chronologically.  she's missing a few years physically and mentally." Kingfisher reminded his guest.  "Adam Steiner never does anything without a reason or a plan."

"I hear that." she raised a glass.  "So, why the ball?"

"oh, let's see...Elizabeth has been very good at keeping her children out of contact with their peers in the realm, and she insists on living in that ridiculous split-level suburban house, so royal visits are out of the question, He's trying like hell to knit the nobility into something coherent that isn't planning a coup, and he wants the reforms to stick."

"and my role in this is..?"

"You're our replacement for Maggie, Daphne." he said grimly, "a senior lady with influence to teach our young protege how not to piss on the carpet or chew up the furnishings."

"Do you really think His Majesty would care about that?" Daphne scoffed.

"If he doesn't, he should." Kingfisher said seriously.  "The Ngos have become one of the most essentially vital supporters of the realm, but they're socially isolated and that's a problem."

Transit transport, Triad to orbit...

Amanda had skipped the trip to the civilian place, treating the task of reporting in as more urgent than a shopping trip.

Tharkad Anchorage was the capital system's repair and refit facility.  It wasn't as extensive as the Gibbs complex, but it was sufficient to pull repair and regular maintenance.

as she rode up, she let her mind wander, imagining a skyhook tower instead of having to wait for clearance from ground control.

an Elevator would be more expensive to build, of course, and it would be strategically difficult, the risk of a terror attack or enemy force toppling it could be very bad indeed.

but...

in her mind, she imagined the process of assembling it, the necessary use of myomer struts to keep it stable while letting orbiting debris pass by, how to sheathe it in monofilament and  semiconductors to take advantage of atmospheric friction and the planet's own magnetic field to generate supplementary power...

as she rode up into orbit, the shuttle gently accelerating, she imagined a series of them, stretching along a band of within five degrees of Tharkad's equator, linked at the counterweight with a secondary structure, half a kilometer tall and placed above geosynch, to create spin gravity while helping resist the downward pull on the spokes.

an 'open trench wheel' producing enough spin gravity to leave the top open, with docks, a super-station...

The idea was fanciful, and she derived pleasure from assembling it in her mind, to take her mind off the frustration of mentally critiquing the shuttle pilot's launch and flight protocols.

after all, nobody likes a backseat driver.

The technical achievement, she imagined, would eclipse the works of the Star League's DOME-Department Of Mega Engineering, and it would provide a nice interphase between ground-bound Tharkad, and Spacers, allowing smooth, efficient travel and a living area the size of a continent and not subject to random weather patterns.

it was a pleasing thought.

she settled into her accel couch and let her mind wander over the possibilities of building it, what would be needed, where the materials might be found...

it was relaxing.

eventually, in the six hour flight, she fell asleep.

This going be unpleasant wake up call when she shows up with no dress uniform.  Hopefully Adam Steiner's plan to make inroads with children will not back fire.  Social Generals can be cruel i think socially.  Amanda is tom boy, going to a non-tom boy place.

I'm pretty sure Amanda has packed her dress uniform, just it's the KCG version, with a more mightly polished helmet for her skinsuit.

Given the Frederick Steiner was in sixty years a Battleship. I'm curious what ship this is that's in drydock.

Same ship design, slightly different timeline.

I really need to update the design fluff for the different iterations.

HM.  maybe backdate it a bit for different eras, then we can fluff out iterations of the design starting in the Ngoverse '60s :)

That's what I was thinking.

Kind of have the current model be the "every option box was ticked" model, like they did with Muscle Cars in the late 60s.

I like that idea! :)

They even chrome plated the NAC's, the hull is reflective like a disco ball so it looks more impressive from groundside, and the interiors are real Wroshyr wood.

No chance to impress was missed.

They assigned Amanda-Dreams-Of-Megaprojects-To-Take-Her-Mind-Off-of-Stress Roshak-Ngo to a ship in a yard, and am expecting to teach her social graces to make her fit for polite company.

... I think they're going to find what will actually happen is more along the lines of a bunch of traumatized socialites, a yard crew equal parts terrorized and inspired, a warship back in service ahead of time and under budget, and Tharkad sporting the beginnings of a new not-quite-moon.

(snip) and Tharkad sporting the beginnings of a new not-quite-moon.

Considering what Patrick & Penny did with a stargate, it might be the begininings of a new "that's no moon..."  ;D
