Wewt, what a betrayal by the Marik Navy ... not sure if General Garibaldi was on this or not but still, absolutely huge betrayal by Marik Navy ... the FWL won't be an entity for much longer once this becomes known to the TH and the FedCom, because Victor sure as hell won't let this stand I reckon.

Part 2

THS Clarion’s Call
Marik Approach
Marik Commonwealth
Free Worlds League

Vice Admiral Wolfgang Rinehart watched in horror as the Terra broke apart.  The flag bridge aboard the Clarion’s Call was dead silence.  The ship rocked from several hits.  The vibrations of heavy autocannon and missile launches were felt through the decks.  Rinehart looked around the bridge everyone was looking at him.
“Signal to all ships.  Set condition Omega throughout the fleet.  Captain Granger lock the League ships out of the network.  Colonel Miller coordinate with the transports get our troops on the ground now.”  Rinehart leveled his gaze at everyone.  “Kill them all.”
The fleet quieted its fire for a moment while the new orders were transmitted.  Then with a vengeance they erupted into a fury.  The cruisers Formidable and Ticonderoga along with the destroyer Vermillion singled out the FWLS Xanthos a Black Lion-class Battlecruiser.  Hammered at the traitor ship as it rolled and tried to make for the relative safety of the Blake’s fleet.  The Xanthos jerked as the onslaught broke through the armor and the ship was venting atmosphere as she began to tumble.  The ship collided with the THS Apollo and both ships were lost in a tangle of destruction.
The Blakist fleet was now in close range as the Princess Royal, Fearless and Yorktown dove for the Immortal Spirit.  The Hegemony ships began belting out a torrent of fire upon the ship that killed the Duke.  Swarming around were the fighter squadrons and fleet defense DropShips of the fleet.  Hammering the offending cruiser ignoring all others.  A Blakist Pinto the Gorgon attempted to swat at a pair of DropShips bearing down on the Spirit only to run afoul of the Yorktown which unleashed a full broadside upon the ship cracking the armor and she was swarmed by three full squadrons of fighters chased after the ship nipping at the gaps in the armor.  A League fighter from the 1ST Free Worlds Guards medium pulse lasers into the rented armor of the Gorgon and was clipped by the ships point defenses before slamming into the ship and it lost control slamming into a Blakist Merlin and both ships exploded.  Minutes later the Immortal Spirit was a gutted drifting wreck.
The Princess Royal and her fellows continued on to the Blakists fleet.  Singling out the WoBS Rays of Enlightenment as the next primary target.  The Celestial Threads made the mistake of crossing into gunsights of the approaching division.  The three cruisers targeted the destroyer quickly gutted the ship with a fusillade of weapons fire.
The Formidable and the Clarion’s Call pummeled the Olympic until the ship broke up and lifeboats began surging from the wreckage.  The Ticonderoga was in a dance with the Hidden Meaning while the destroyers Agamemnon and Nemesis trapped the Percival against the dying Xanthos forcing the ship to maneuver wildly and bleed off speed.  The two Davion III destroyers made short work of the League frigate.
The St. Joseph and St. Simon both swung into position and began trading salvos with the Deliverance and Blade of Righteousness.  The Righteousness crumbled under the weight of two broadsides while forward firing arcs of the two Hegemony destroyers crushed the armor of the Deliverance Forcing the ship to maneuver.  Two Aerospace groups assigned to remain on point defense for the ships intercepted a pair of Santa Ana missiles when a third came in and exploded against the hull of the St. Simon causing massive damage to the Riga II destroyer and sending it drifting off into the system.
The Deliverance took several salvos of medium particle cannons followed up by the super heavy class 40 autocannons ripping through the bow and into the guts of the destroyer the ships shuddered.  A follow up salvo from the St. Joseph exploded deep in the interior of the Deliverance as the ship peeled open like a banana dying in the hell fires above Marik.
“Admiral!”  His staff communications officer called out.
“What is it Ramon?”  Rinehart answered.
“I’m getting a signal on the coalition network.”  Lieutenant Ramon Wilson reported.
“That’s nice tell the League ships where they can shove it.”  Rinehart spat.
“No sir, its from the Takashi from a Sho-Sho Yodama.”  Wilson countered.
Rinehart caught himself.  “Put it through.”
The voice and face that came over the display at Rinehart’s station surprised him.  Recorded and burst transmitted.  He looked at the times of transmission and reception.  Only a couple of minutes.  They were close.  “Good day Ryan’san, I bring greetings from the Coordinator and Khan West.  We are swinging around the far side of the planet now we estimate we will be within weapons range in the next fifteen minutes and intercept with the Blakist force in forty minutes.  Yodama out.”
Relief washed over Rinehart.  But he didn’t know how many ships were with him or if they knew of the situation.  Obviously, they did not know of the Duke’s death.  “Send to the Takashi.”  He ordered.  Wilson gave him the signal that he was live.  “Sho-Sho Yodama, be advised League fleet are traitors.  Ground forces as of now are still friendly and are fighting on our side.  The Duke and the Flagship are gone.  Hegemony forces are at…”

“The Duke and the Flagship are gone.  Hegemony forces are at Condition OMEGA.  Stand clear of planetary approach of ground force.  Anything not flying Hegemony colors receives a single warning to stand clear or they will be destroyed.  What is your fleet composition?  If you are here to fight begin clearing the orbitals of the toaster’s our main group is passing through the Blakist fleet in five minutes.”  The message ended.
Yodama looked at Cho-Sho Hatsuhara.  “Well Cho-Sho, put me through to the Star Admiral.”
“Hai.”  Hatsuhara responded.  After a few seconds the screen lit up.
“Star Admiral Devails, I am transmitting the message we just received from the Hegemony fleet.  Short story is, Duke Ryan is dead, the flagship has been destroyed.  They have entered into something called Condition OMEGA.  I believe they are in the process of killing everything around them as fast as they can.  The Free Worlds League Warships with them are traitors.”  Yodama reported.
Star Admiral Wilhelm Devails absorbed the information he just received.  He was the appointed commander of the Nova Cat – Combine warships joint task force.  His Mystic Naval Star and the four Combine ships centered on the cruiser Takashi.  The Combine and Nova Cats ground composition consists of the Ryuken-ni Brigade and Tau Galaxy.  “Very well we will join the Hegemony in their Trial of Annihilation against this fleet.  I suggest that you and the ground forces begin their landings.”
“Good luck Star Admiral.”  Yodama said in parting.

SLS [Remembrance

As the channel closed Star Admiral Devails looked out over his command.  “Luck will have nothing to do with this.  These surats used forbidden weapons and are without honor.  They will die here today.”
As the Combine task force swung around the planet they detected the swarm of allied DropShips entering the upper atmosphere of Marik with several regiments of drop pods already streaking across the sky.  The Robinson IIA corvettes Bataan and Kearsarge were dropping pods and covering the fleet in low orbit.  The massive Potemkin transports were already continuing on around the planet breaking orbit to burn clear of the battle.
In a ripple of flashes of nuclear fire erupted across the Bataan as it swatted DropShip and fighter squadron alike from space.  The Blakist destroyer End of Wisdom finished off the Bataan as it began to fall towards the surface.
“I want that Lola dead now!”  Devails shouted.  “Send to fleet.  Void, Spirit Vision, and Far Vision remain and cover the landings.  Dieron Star and Draconis Rift complete your drops and rejoin the fleet.”
The two Combine Kyushu Frigates cut thrust and began dropping BattleMechs from the pod launchers in the belly of the ship.  The Void and the pair of Nova Cat Corvettes slowed and began to cover the Kearsarge and the remaining DropShips still in orbit which were descending down to the surface of Marik.  The remaining ships of the Mystic Naval Star and the ComGuard 2nd Independent Squadron continued to charge into the rear of the Blakist fleet.  The five heavy cruisers, four Aegis and the one Kirishima all selected the Blake’s Sword as their primary target.  The Blakist Battleship was trading long range broadsides with the Clarion’s Call.  The Avenging Sword was the first to open up on the Blakist Battleship when the Remembrance, Principle and Chronicle all began to braket the Battleship.
“To all ships, the Word of Blake is without honor and used nuclear weapons upon our allies.  They are not worthy of zellbrigen.  We kill them all here today.”  Devails ordered receiving confirmations from not just the Nova Cat forces but also from Com Guard and Combine ships and fighters as well.
The Takashi and Lair of Mighty Wyrms began to target the Sword while the Deathblow and Brandenburg Crusader began firing on the Enlightened Direction.  The Combine Frigates along with the Nova Cat corvettes and the Kearsarge destroyed the End of Wisdom and at the moment only DropShips and fighters were threatening the landing operations.

THS Clarion’s Call
Marik, Marik Commonwealth
Free Worlds League

Vice Admiral Rinehart watched as the Blake’s Sword was being pummeled by the Clarion’s Call.  The Princess Royal and her consorts finished off the Rays of Enlightenment and began firing upon the Blake’s Sword.  More fire poured in from the direction of Marik.
“Admiral!”  A rating called out.  “Nova Cat, Combine and ComGuard warships have primaried the enemy McKenna.”
Rinehart simply nodded.  The big Battleship was visibly staggering in space the Clarion’s Call belted out another full broadside of heavy particle weapons fire.  It crashed into the flank of the big Battleship and in a moment all of the lights were out, the engines died, and fires could be seen glowing from the open wounds.
The Yorktown and Erin both managed to bracket the FWLS Troy.  The ship was burning hard for the system primary jump points but didn’t make it.  The two cruisers cut the ship in two.  The last third of the Agamemnon heavy cruiser separated and the forward half tumbled down and away from the drive section which was still burning at maximum acceleration for another ten minutes before they flared out.
The Terran Resolve formed up with the Agamemnon and Nemesis and were wading into the Blakist destroy squadron.  The Impavido was the current target of their Eire.  While the Sword of Enlightenment had died minutes before, and the Sword of Promise was finishing off the THS Vermillion.
An Assault Escort Squadron of Longstreet DropShips and a Lee-CV swarmed the FWLS Araeuda.  The traitor corvette was being swarmed by marines and a concerted boarding action was underway.  The Nueva Badajoz was disabled and had been captured by marines as well.
With the loss of the Blake’s Sword the remaining Word of Blake ships were routed and began to race for the system zenith jump point.  The Herald of Justice led the destroyers Sword of Promise, Dawning Horizon, Divine Forgiveness, and Guarded Knowledge along with the corvettes Blade of Divinity and Syrstart.

THS Bataan
Marik, Marik Commonwealth
Free Worlds League

Colonel Sarah Ryan – Marchioness of Nova California and heir to the Terran Hegemony-in-Exile Regency – sat strapped into her ABM-O1 Abrams concealed within the orbital drop cocoon aboard the planetary assault ship Bataan as the ship began to settle into its drop position.  This whole operation went to shit when those traitorous bastards turned on us.  Sarah thought to herself.  The Bataan shook from weapons impact.  She reached down and activated her external communications linkup.  She tied into the ships network and began listening to the general fleet channel.
“…uclear impacts all across the ship.”  One stationed stated.  “FLASH, FLASH, FLASH.  Set Condition OMEGA.  The Terra is down.  I say again the Terra is down.  The Duke is dead…”
Sarah’s communication net cut out and was replaced by the calm determined voice of her brigade commander.  “Colonel Ryan, Sarah.  We are dropping you now.  The toasters are sending nuclear armed fighters at us and at least a pair of destroyers.  They are preparing my shuttle now but if I don’t make it you link up with General Briggs and finish this fight.”  The older man looked at her with affection.  “You are a young Colonel, Sarah.  But you are ready.  Do not let anyone ever think you are not ready.  You have the talent of your father, the wits of your mother and the resolve of us all.  Good luck Highness.”
“General.  You need to get to the hanger now.”  Sarah demanded.  “We have time.”
The old man smiled and shook his head.  “You drop in thirty seconds Duchess.  Missiles are already inbound.”  With that the connect severed.
“NO!”  She screamed.  Her repeater was blank.  Her umbilical was retracted by the drop team.  The ship shuddered.  Pods began dropping.  It was dead silence except for the sound of the systems in standby and the thrum of the fusion engine.  Within a minute a roar began to build as the pod entered the atmosphere.  Building to a roar as the heat began to climb and become unbearable even with the heat ablating shell.  Eight minutes into the drop the shell split five ways like petals of a flower.  Three petal’s remained attached and flared to create drag and slow the fall to more controllable speeds.
The flight computer onboard the pod guided the decent towards the designated Drop Zone.  Sarah began toggling up all of her sensors and other systems that were not being controlled by the flight computer.  Looking out of the cockpit she spotted the swarm of BattleMech and Battle Armor drop pods as then fell towards the planet.  She knew fifteen minutes after the first ‘Mech’s hit the dirt the transports would be closing on the surface.  She needed to work quickly.  Already had she switched over to the regimental command network on her Nova CEWS.  It began interrogating everything around her and building the network.
“Black Jack-6 this is Darkhorse-6, requesting SITREP on deployment.”  Sarah called trying to establish communications with Brigadier General Grey.  She tried repeatedly and got nothing.  “Any Black Jack element this is Darkhorse-6, requesting SITREP anyone have location on the Six?”  She asked.
“Darkhorse-6 this is Maverick-6, the Bataan is gone.  We don’t think Black Jack Actual got out.  I am upgrading your network access to command 2ND Brigade.”  The disembodied voice of General Briggs hit Sarah for the second time today.  Her mentor dead, her father dead.
Sarah Ryan looked at the altimeter and saw she still had about two minutes before the drop pod detached and she was left with the drop packs still attached to her Abrams.  “Alright Maverick-6, Don’t coddle me.  My brigade is going to continue on mission and secure our objectives.”
She sat there for another thirty seconds before her system hierarchy updated and expanded to include the other regiments in her brigade.  “I don’t think I could even try and do that right now Black Jack.”  He said changing her callsign.  “It looks like we have two toaster divisions for every brigade we are dropping on the ground right now.  Good Hunting, Maverick-6 out.”
Just has the General ended the call the remaining structure of the drop pods detached and the jump pack began firing slowing her decent.  She saw the rest of her command lance already on the ground and engaged.  She dropped at the head of her 3RD Battalion in order to make room for her on the Drop aboard the Bataan the battalions actual command was aboard a Lee and was dropping as well.  At one kilometer her jump pack went into overdrive burning all of its remaining energy slowing her decent.  The flight computer adjusting her Abrams’ legs to absorb the landing and chiming to her that she had better be ready to assume full control as soon as she touched down.
The 100ton assault OmniMech hit the deck with all of the grace of a freight train.  The computer did its job absorbed the landing and righted the mech.  Sarah reached out and flipped the cover off of the harness release.  Slapping the button the jump pack fell away from her OmniMech and he was off.  Ahead of her Sergeant Douglas in his Osteon C was facing off against a bone white Grand Titan.  Sarah stepped up a few more meters until she was sure she had a good angle on the Blakist assault ‘Mech.
“Douglas sidestep left, now.”  She ordered on the lance frequency.  As Douglas complied she fired her paired large pulse lasers into the ‘Mech followed up by a round from her gauss rifle.  The Titan was now focused on the new enemy trying to split its attention between them.  Her AMS whirred and intercepted six of the twelve SRM’s fired at her.  She returned the favor by firing two flights from her streak six packs.  Douglas was not out of the fight he unleased all of his medium pulse lasers flashing armor to ruined slag to drip off of the Blakist Titan.
“Thanks Boss lets end this.  I can’t wait for our infantry to link up with us.”  Douglas called out.
“Me to Doughy my boy, me too.”  She said as she fired first one and then another of her pulse lasers into the machine.  Her gauss rifle reloaded and she fired again cracking open the machines armor around the reactor.  The Nova CEWS were handing off targeting info and Sarah loosed another flight of SRM’s allowing for Douglas’ targeting computer enhanced lasers to probe deep into the core of the Titan with his pair of large pulse lasers.
The BattleMech shuddered and froze.  The emergency shut down of the reactor had just happened.  At this point Sergeant Tanaka walked up to the disabled ‘Mech in her Osteon B and keyed her radio.  “Are we still in OMEGA?”  Was her simple question.
Sarah sat there for a moment.  Her cool resolve not breaking.  “Yes.”  Was her only reply.
Tanaka raised the large vibroblade in her right arm and swung it down onto the Grand Titan’s cockpit.  Cutting into the BattleMech and surely killing the pilot.

I didn't see the FWL navy turning, because I thought Hegemony would have cleared them...

remember that the Word of Blake turned or captured these ships during the Jihad as well.  Trying to keep some of the story close.

I just want to go ahead and add the first Story along with the St. Ives War Campaign in order to help anyone just jumping into my AU to catch up.  I know that I morph my path through the first book but the Field Manuel is a 3062'ish update as to the state of the THAFiE and RETCONs a lot.  When I am done with this story I will go back and rewrite the first story and update its unit organizations and some of the names to what they are supposed to be.

I forgot to add the First Draft of the Field Manual.  Here it is.  The second one is a mess as I am adding a TRO section and updating units and fleet assets.  I will skip this and just update it to post Word of Blake War.

Yep I remember that, but given that they knew that the FWL military was inflitrated, I would have  thought they would have cleared any FWLN forces they used of WOB

unlike the ground formations that turned.  due to long relationships with the Word of Blake Militia having had an entire Battalion serving in their formations the fleet only had "communications" officers aboard.  Like during the Jihad they assumed control of the fleet ships in similar fashion. elimination of the crew or subversion.

So I need to RETCON something into the story.  The THS Terran Resolve was destroyed during this last space battle.  Well if you read Operation Restore Hope she was destroyed there as well.  This is now the truth for this story.  The Resolve was lost during the battle of Marik and the THS Guardian's Hope was lost in Restore Hope.  I will be releasing both a update to the Restore Hope campaign "historical" and I am building a warship tracker for the AU.

A little update on warship losses just from the Battle of Marik.  30 ships lost in that single engagement.  Just see below the tally.  More Ships are going to be scrapped instead of repaired just FYI on the Hegemony side so this number will increase as the story moves on.  Check out the attached page for your losses update.

Chapter Eight

F.O.B. Grey
Malket, Marik
Free Worlds League
07 April 3065

Colonel Sarah Ryan sat in the corner of the tent which acted as her brigade command post.  The rapid deployable shelter was kept as sparse as possible due to the Word of Blake making a habit of hitting the coalition force headquarters locations.  The ground forces had already suffered heavy losses during the drop.  The discovery of three full strength Word of Blake Militia Divisions on the surface supported by three Mercenary commands was enough of a headache and took away from the numerical superiority that Hegemony doctrine shoots for during offensive operations.  Three of the five League brigades which dropped onto Marik landed within any semblance of cohesion and quickly consolidated following their drop zone being overrun by the biggest surprise of them all.  Two divisions of elite cybernetically enhanced troops in advanced battle armor, vehicles and both Battle and OmniMech’s destroyed almost a full brigade of League loyalists during the battle of the Firehill Plains.
Only the arrival of the Ryuken-ni and elements of the Nova Cats’ Tau Galaxy saved the League from a total rout.  Today Sarah was planning the offensive to hunt down this 43RD Shadow Division.  The Iron Horse Brigade supported by the Tau Galaxy would also be hunting the 45TH Shadow Division.  Each brigade would be assigned a Cluster of Nova Cats to act as bait with the balance of the brigade ready to pounce on the Shadow Division if it shows itself.
The Combine and the Ryuken-ni along with the rest of Tau Galaxy be moving to secure the Imstar Aerospace plant near Andrew Springs with the goal of destroying the Blakist 16TH Division and Swann’s Cavaliers.  General Garibaldi assigned the understrength 25TH Marik Militia to support the Combine led operation.
General Garibaldi would lead his 1ST Marik Militia along with the 1ST Free World Guards and the survivors of the 30TH and 31ST Marik Militia’s which we combined into the provisional 3RD Marik Brigade in order to keep numbering conventions from getting confusing.
“I see the Colonel is deep in thought quiaff?”  The voice of Star Colonel Bel cut through the silence and contemplation of Sarah’s thoughts.
She smirked as she turned around.  “Aff, Star Colonel.  I am.”  Sarah responded.  “I am waiting to hear back from our reconnaissance team to see if they found where these accursed boogiemen are at.”
Nodded he walked over to the map displaying the area where intelligence and previous recon missions have narrowed down where the 43RD Shadow Division was hiding.  “I do believe they are in these woods.  However, from what we have seen of their capabilities I am not sure that your brigade and my Cluster are enough to undertake this operation.”
“Oh, I am onboard with that assessment.”  Sarah agreed.  “Until we are reinforced.  I do not see how we cannot attempt to push into there and go after them.  We will have the Resolve in direct support for this operation and our fire support teams are well trained in calling orbital support.”
She watched the Clansmen visibly cringe at that.  “I hope that it does not come to that.  Images of Turtle Bay come to mind.”
“We will not be bombarding a city full of civilians from orbit Star Colonel.  That you can be assured.”  Sarah stated sternly.
“Colonel Ryan.”  One of the command post sergeants spoke up.
“What is it Garza?”  She asked.
“Ghost-6 just pushed a SPOTREP over the data link.”  Sergeant Garza reported.
“Must not want to compromise his position with a radio broadcast.”  Bel offered.
“Oh, I wouldn’t want to be in his position.”  Sarah said seeing Bel wince at her use of a contraction.  She smiled at that.  “What do we got Sergeant?”  Sarah asked as she got to the terminal.
“He has marked several position and his scouts are pushing out to try and define the extent of their positions.”  Garza read from the display.  He pointed out some marked points on the display.  “His scouts have silenced three observation posts and what looks like a platoon command group was taken out here.”  He said.
“Looks like he opened a hole in their lines.  We need to get moving.”  Sarah stated.
She straightened up and reached for field pack.  “Sergeant alert the brigade.  Push out the data and plot our approach march.  Relay to Ghost that they are to hold and reconsolidate.  We are going to push up and begin our clearance.”  Sarah turned to Bel.  “You know what you need to do Star Colonel.  Let’s get going.”
“Of Course, Colonel.”  He said as he stepped from the command tent and heading for his Nova Cat A.
Sarah stepped out into the sun as she walked to her ‘Mech parked nearby.  Looking up she smiled as she saw the autocannon poking out and was pleased that her tech team had reconfigured it into the Abrams B configuration.
“Colonel, she’s all ready for you.”  Master Sergeant Josefosky her lead tech reported.
“Thanks Ski, I’ll try and bring her back in better condition this time.”  Sarah quipped as she reached the lift that would raise her to the cockpit.
“I won’t hold my breath on that Ma’am.”  He said as he rolled his eyes.  “These things were made to get the hell beat out of them.”  He said as the lift was raising her up to the hatch.  “Just bring yourself back in one piece.  That’s all we really care about.”
That hit Sarah hard.  Josefosky wasn’t her normal tech he died when the Word of Blake shelled the landing zone on the second day when we thought they weren’t going to attach the beachhead.  Josefosky used to be the Generals tech and the head of the Brigade command group’s maintenance section.  I guess it should be fitting that I now have you looking out for me during all this.  Sarah thought to herself.  “I’ll do my best.”  She said as she dropped into the command couch and began strapping in.  She flipped the master power button and began the start up sequence.
“Identify.”  The disembodied voice of the computer spoke.
“Ryan, Sarah.  Foxtrot-Romeo-Hotel-2-1-7-3-5-India.”  She said giving her access code for her massive 100ton ABM-O1 Abrams OmniMech.
“Identity confirmed.  Systems Online.  Weapons in standby.  Configuration changed.  ABM-B1 identified. Good Hunting Colonel Ryan.”  The computer reported back.
As she pressed the command to secure the hatch she reached over and combat locked the access door.  Outside she could see that Josefosky had already lowered the lift and had it backed away and clear of her OmniMech.  The little mobile tracked lift allowed for maintenance to be done on the ‘Mech without putting her into a gantry or requiring a crane for basic work and allowed pilots in the field to get in without too much trouble in a field environment without using the built-in chain ladder.
Activating the communications system, she watched her Legion CEWS boot up and begin to populate.  The voice communications sub system glowed green.  Toggling the brigade net.  “Blackjack X-Ray this is Blackjack-6 radio check over.”  She spoke.
There was a slight delay on the radio.  “Six, this is X-ray, roger over.”
“X-Ray, Six, roger out.”  Sarah completed the radio check sequence.  Switching to her primary lance network she keyed up again.  “Alright all you degenerates are you ready to go kick some ant hills over?”
She was rewarded with laughter from her three lance mates and the two squads of Elemental clad armored infantrymen that made up her command lance.  “Yes ma’am.”  Responded Sergeant Allen her senior infantry squad leader.
“Alright let’s form up with the rest of the brigade.  We are already late for the party.  Boys and girls.  I do not want to miss last call.”  She began angling the Abrams for the designated exit for the improvised base.  The engineers had worked hard to fortify the base.  Massive ‘Mech ditches and mine fields surrounded the place as well as other surprises that she hopped the Word of Blake’s cybernetically enhanced horror show of an infantry force couldn’t walk through.
Already two battlegroups built around an OmniMech battalion each had already stepped off.  3RD Battalion was waiting for her with its battlegroup elements.  A battalion of OmniMech’s supported by a battalion of armor, and two composite armored infantry battalions – a full battalion of Nighthawk armored infantry and another with a company of Nighthawk’s and two companies of Elemental’s.
“3-Darkhorse-6 this is Blackjack-6, we are forming up with you now ready to move.”  Sarah reported to her ‘Mech regiments third battalion commander.  Eric Sullivan was not the commander of third battlegroup that was reserved for Colonel Jerrod Thompson the commander of her 4TH Armored Infantry Regiment.
“Blackjack-6 roger.  We are moving now.”  Sullivan reported.
“Roger 2-Darkhorse-3.  Spartan-6, Blackjack-6 let’s do this Jerrod.”  Sarah stated.
She heard a chuckling coming through the network that the computers would have normally filtered out if he hadn’t overrode it and let it out over the battlegroup network.  “Oh, the day will be rife with the sorrows of our enemies Blackjack-6.  Let us put these dogs down here and now today over?”
“Roger that Spartan-6.  You ready for this?”  Sarah asked.
“I was ready for this when my boots hit the dirt.  Change of plans Six.  My squad will need a lift on one of your ‘Mech’s.  I had to give my transport over to one of the companies as they had one go down.  Is that an issue?”  Jerrod asked.
“Not at all Spartan.  I’m detailing a ‘Mech to come over and pick you all up.”  Switching to her lance net.  “Tanaka, I need you to pick up Spartan-6 and his command squad.  They need a ride into battle and knowing him he’s going to want to get up close and personal.  I figured you would want that honor.”
“Roger that ma’am.  It would be my pleasure.  You know we are going to have to officially designate a variant of this thing if I like how it works.”  Sarah heard the glee in Tanaka’s voice.
“No, I don’t think so Tanaka.  There is already a variant for that.  It’s the Bravo variant.  I know you just love your vibroblade.”  Sarah chided.
“Well I’m going to design one that keeps the blade and still let’s me have fun with other equipment.”  Tanaka said as she split off to pick up the squad of battle armor.
“You do that and I will write it into law when we get back.”  Sarah said laughing.
“Oh, you can count on that.”  Tanka replied.

Star Commander Alex moved forward as his battle armor star fanned out into the “forest.”  Already he passed two impossibly hard to see OmniMech’s that had been the Hegemony’s reconnaissance force.  He knew there was at least a squad of power armor up ahead spread out and using their stealth systems to observe the Word of Blakes abominations.  One thing both the Nova Cats and the Hegemony reconnaissance troops knew was they were walking into a trap.  These cybernetically enhanced soldiers had proven to be anything but lazy.  They knew the enemy was out there and what he and his trinary were approaching was nothing more than bait.  Just like himself.
“Alex, hold position.”  Ordered Star Captain Cynthia Rosse.  “Our allies are detecting movement on our flank.  Be ready.”
“Aff, Star Captain.”  Alex responded and eye clicked to the next channel.  “Hold position, movement on our flank.  Be ready for anything.  The Hegemony recon teams know that if we make contact before we pass them then they are prepared for possible friendly fire.  Do not hold back with these abominations.”  He ordered.  All of his Point Commanders responded by toggling their acknowledgement buttons.
“Alex, the recon team is falling back they report the camp is now fully active.  The rest of the Cluster is moving up to us now.  We are about to begin this fight.  Good hunting Nova Cats.”  Rosse reported.
Alex relayed the report over the net to the rest of his star.  He watched as two squads of Nighthawk light powered armor moved by teams back to his Star’s position.  Instead of continuing back to link up with the rest of their company they stopped turned and took cover setting up for a fight.
“I hope you don’t mind but we plan on staying for this one.  At least until the rest of your Cluster moves up and is in position.  You have 8 ‘Mech’s some vehicles and three of their reinforced squads of battle armor and what looks like two platoons of their cybernetic horror show infantry.”  Reported the scout that just walked up to him.
“You should move back now.  The situation will change very fast here.”  Alex suggested.
“I understand that Star Commander.  But my ride is right next to you and if we move they will know it.”  He said as he pointed to the blurred tree.  It was an OmniMech with the full light polarization system activated.  “I’m not leaving him here just yet.  My IFV is further back but he will need us to break contact.”
He was shocked to not have noticed the ‘Mech sitting there.  “Very well, you all can…”  Alex was cut off as explosions enveloped the entire line.  Before he could say anything a demonic looking suit of armor landed near them.  The Terran began firing his laser rifle at the horned creature.  A full six of them were now online and firing their recoilless rifles at his Elementals.
Before Alex could give orders the ‘Mech next to him dropped its stealth and fired a glowing ball of pure plasma on the Blakist battle armor line.  Quickly following it up with a flamer.  The plasma like napalm stuck to the armored suits and began cooking the soldier inside.  To his west about a hundred meters down the other Terran ‘Mech dropped its stealth and fired heavy small lasers at another line of battle armor.
The Hegemony ‘Mech was hit by particle cannon fire.  The little OmniMech staggered turned and fired a heavy large laser back in the direction of fire he had just been fired upon.  The Demonic looking BattleMech that appeared from the smoke was painted bone white and sported the red inverted triangle with a broadsword encircled by two coiling serpents with the numbers 43.
Alex watched as the two Hegemony OmniMechs squared off against the medium weight ‘Mech.  He had no idea what it was and it was not returning in any of the Warbooks of either the Hegemony or Nova Cat databases.  Activating his star frequency.  “Beta and Gamma points suppress you have the Lightray.  Delta and Epsilon points work together and take down that White Flame.  Alpha we will support our allies and take down this surat OmniMech.”
He saw all of the acknowledgement icons light up and then as one the entire star fired off their SRM missiles bounded forward firing lasers as they advanced.  Right along with him both squads of Hegemony Nighthawk equipped scouts mounded forward engaging the infantry that were advancing into the Nova Cats.
Two Bandit hover craft slid up and deployed two more squads of Nighthawk scouts.  As another pair of Hegemony light Omni’s approached.  Their Chameleon Light Polarization Shields fading off as they one fired its extended range large laser into the torso of the Lightray.  Seconds later a point of Elementals landed upon the BattleMech and began to go after actuators and ripping armor plates off firing into guts of the BattleMech.  One Elemental was flung from the Lightray to crash against a rock face.
Alex targeted his SRM launcher onto the OmniMech which hadn’t been identified.  Fired and bounded away from his firing position.  Landing in his next spot he saw one of his point-mates fire his SRM’s and bound only to be swatted out of the sky by the machines snub-nose particle cannon.
“Star Captain Rosse, we need help over here.  The Hegemony is trying but this reconnaissance unit does not have the firepower that is needed.”  Alex reported to his Trinary commander.
“I am right behind you Star Commander.”  Star Captain Cynthia Rosse reported as the balance of the Cluster appeared behind him.  Reinforced with a battlegroup from the Hegemony’s new OmniMech division.
“How about we complete this Trial of Annihilation Star Colonel Bel, quaiff?”  Alex heard another voice come through on an open all hands frequency.  Normally used for one enemy talking to another.  “Aff, Colonel Sarah Ryan.  It is time we put these surats down for good.”  Star Colonel Bel reported over the same frequency.

“Let’s get to work Blackjack.  Condition OMEGA is still in effect.”  Duchess Sarah Ryan ordered as she stepped her Abrams up next to the Nova Cat.  “Alright Spartan-6, get after it.”  Sarah ordered to her battlegroup commander Colonel Thompson.
“On the bounce Colonel.”  He said as his squad dropped to the ground before bounding forward on jump jets.  All around Sarah the OmniMechs of her brigade supported by Elemental and Nighthawk powered armor and combat vehicles moved in on the fanatical and well equipped cyberneticaly enhanced demon Soldiers.
He leveled her big bore ultra-class 20 autocannon at the medium weight OmniMech that one of the Nova Cat Elemental points were working on and fired into the torso.  Knocking the medium ‘Mech to the ground.  When it stood back up it had a long-jagged tear and exposed components showing.  Two of the Elementals fired their small lasers into the gap rewarded with a flash of engine shielding.  She switched to her gauss rifle and fired it into the torso once again.  She was rewarded with the flash of an engine shutdown.  The ‘Mech began to sag and then righted itself.
This pilot hit the override.  Oh well.  Sarah thought to herself.  She fired her large laser and backed that up with a burst from her medium pulse laser.  The ‘Mech shuddered just as the Nova Cat point fired another volley of their SRM’s into the torso the OmniMech exploded as the runaway reaction tried to consume the entire OmniMech.  The Elemental’s with their SRMs expended detached their launchers and bounded away to land amongst a platoon of cybernetically enhanced infantry which were cutting one of her recon teams to pieces as the Nighthawk’s kept the infantry off of the Nova Cats long enough for them to fight the BattleMech’s.  These troopers were definitely deserving of honors.  Sarah thought.
“Advance, this ends here.”  Sarah ordered.

Sarah stood next to the body of one of the cybernetic infantrymen that were so plaguing the armored and unarmored troops on this planet.  A heavy battle armor and regular infantry guard was spread all around.  Several of the horror shows like before her had come alive to kill her troopers who were just trying to clear bodies.
“Colonel, General Briggs reports that Iron Horse broke the 45TH Shadow Division.  Once that happened all of the regular Militia troops surrendered.”  Reported her aid.
“Well we need to secure the rest of Marik but it looks like the Cavalry will be pulling out of here and jumping to Atreus.  We need to get our equipment repaired and aboard our DropShips.”  Sarah ordered.  And thus ended the Battle of Marik…

Chapter Eight

THS Eternal Vigilance
Atreus, Marik Commonwealth
Free Worlds League
15 June 3065

Archon-Prince Victor Steiner-Davion watched as the various leaders gathered in the command briefing room aboard the Hegemony’s command variant McKenna-class Battleship Eternal Vigilance.  He knew that nothing was getting close to this ship other than a shuttle that did not fly the flag of the Hegemony.  With the loss of Duke Michael and the Terra above Marik Fleet Admiral Mancuso was taking no chances with the new Duchess’ security.  To the point where Victor had witnessed the normally sedate admiral tear into the new Duchess over her taking a front-line role in the battle of Marik.  Victor respected Sarah for her continuing mission.  However, the loss of the Duke should have had her aboard a Warships at the minimum or heading back to the Hegemony’s ‘Homeworlds.’
What surprised him the most was the arrival of Chancellor Sun-Tzu Liao himself.  Escorted by a company of Death Commando’s and the Red Lancers.  He placed those troops under the command of Duke Kai Allard-Liao along with the fleet assets upon arrival.  Victor was trying his damnedest to find out what angle he was playing.  Also present was Kai his friend, Thomas Marik whom had just escaped with his life from Atreus at the expense of half of his Knights of the Inner Sphere whom were still fighting for their lives on the surface.  The Word of Blake was hard at work trying to destroy the Knights who sold themselves dearly for the Captain-General to escape.
Victor hoped for Thomas’ sake that the squadron of League Warships with the fleet were loyal to him.  They already identified a battlegroup with the Blakist fleet over Atreus.  The ships with the Hegemony led fleet were being watched like hawks by the Terran Warships.  A battle had already been fought between the Blakist and loyalist fleet units above the planet resulting in the battered ships within the formation now.  Another group of ships arrived to reinforce the Captain-General but it was looking like the Hegemony was going to do the heavy lifting yet again here.  Mancuso and Sarah did not want the League ships in the line of fire between the Word of Blake and Hegemony forces after Marik.  Although General Garibaldi’s aerospace forces sold themselves dearly to suppress as many of the League fighters off of the Sardis as they could.
As the hatched open to admit the host of the gathering everyone stood out of respect.  Duchess Sarah Ryan, now Commanding General of the Terran Hegemony-in-Exile Armed Forces.  When she took her position at the table Victor worried that he was going to have to stand up for herself with Sun-Tzu in the room.  This explains why he is here.  Victor thought to himself.  I bet he wants to reverse the treaty of Sian and try and take the Compact again.
“Thank you all for coming.”  Fleet Admiral Mancuso began.  “The Duchess and I are very glad to see everyone here.  With the balance of the 1ST Cavalry Division still on Marik along with both the Draconis Combine and Nova Cat forces this battle is shaping up to be similar.”  Taking her seat Mancuso deferred to the Duchess.
Standing from her position she moved around to the smart display.  “I know I am late to this dance but I want to get started off with a battle roster.  What do we have for ground forces.  We already know what we have in space.”  She said tapping a data chip to the screen bringing up the force allocations.  “We are deploying the 101ST Jump Infantry Division along with my Blackjack brigade.  The 4TH BattleMech Division on the way however they will not arrive in time to take part in the landings.”  Returning to her seat Sarah looked towards Victor.  “Archon-Prince if you would go next please?”  She said.
Grabbing his chip he stepped up to the display and tapped the chip watching the transfer of data begin.  “FedCom forces during this campaign will consist of the 10TH Lyran Guards and Davion Heavy Guards combat teams.  I also have the Armored Cavalry as a reserve and the 5TH Crucis Lancers are moving into theater along with your 4TH BattleMech Division.”  Returning to his seat Victor nodded to the Com Guard officer in the room.  “Precentor Durbin you are up.”
Precentor Alexander Durbin stood and likewise tapped his chip to the screen and begun his briefing.  “I bring both the 2ND and 11TH Divisions from my 3RD Army.  Our warship support detoured to Marik in order to reinforce the drive there.”
Walking back to his seat Duke Kai Allard-Liao stood up and walked to the display.  “Compact forces on this mission as a part of the joint Capellan-St. Ives task force consist of the 1ST St. Ives Lancers and the 2ND Janissaries Brigade.  I will let the Chancellor brief us on the forces from the Confederations.  Chancellor?”  Kai asked inviting his cousin and sometime enemy up.
Chancellor Sun-Tzu Liao stood from his seat and approached the display tapping the chip and letting it download.  “The Capellan Confederation has deployed the Red Lancers, 2ND McCarron’s Armored Cavalry, Warrior House Dai Da Chi and a company of Death Commando’s.”  Everyone was impressed with the troops that the Confederation had deployed here.  Turning to leave he stopped and reached into his pocket and removed another chip.  Tapping it the data began to download.  “Also from my Trinity Alliance allies and arriving in the next forty-eight hours will be the 2ND Canopian Cuirassiers and the 3RD Canopian Fusiliers under the command of Naomi Centrella.”
Those around the table were shocked as the Chancellor revealed those details.  Sarah spoke for everyone.  “Thank you Chancellor for the contributions of Capellan forces and I will thank Colonel Centrella when she arrives for the Magistracy’s contribution as well.  I would also like to thank you for arranging this addition member of the coalition.”  Sun-Tzu simply nodded.  Sarah directed her gaze to the last member in the room.  “Captain-General?”  She bade.
Standing up he walked to the display and like the others tapped the chip.  “I don’t even know why I just did that.  As of twelve hours ago the 1ST and 2ND Knights of the Inner Sphere were at less than fifty percent combat capable and were moving hard to get away from the half of the 9TH Legionnaires that didn’t die trying to extract me from the palace and is hunting down the Knights along with the 2ND Legionnaires and the 15TH Division.  I have Romanov’s Crusaders with the fleet now along with 2ND Free Worlds Guards which arrived today to reinforce us.”
The computer completed the tally for everyone watching.  “That gives us seventeen regiments give her take of ‘Mech’s plus another nine on the way.”  Mancuso reported.  “So now the hardest part of this whole operation is going to be getting to orbit.  I have the entire 2nd Fleet deployed in system and reinforcements are on the way from the Homeworlds.  The FedCom has deployed six ships and the joint Capellan-St. Ives taskforce brings another five.  I am not going to slight your forces Captain-General but they have already fired upon us during this campaign and I am only going to count on those that extracted you from the surface.”  Receiving a nod Mancuso continued.  “That’s five survivors from the initial battle and another seven unknowns.”
Mancuso looked around the room.  “The Word of Blake unleashed nukes on us at Marik we are still assessing our losses.  By the end of the battle we had lost eight ships outright with another three possibly as many as six showing signs of being unrepairable.”  She activated the display.  “My goal is to bait the Blakist fleet out to meet us.  While it is best to pin them against the gravity well of Atreus I do not want to give them the advantage of having more aerospace assets available then we have to face at any one time.  Reinforcements are expected however I am not sure how far out they are.  They are running under EMCON in order to avoid alerting the Word of Blake with the continuous use of HPG traffic.  While they can’t read out mail they can detect the signals being emitted and from a general area on the star charts.  As that area gets closer they will no doubt know we are coming.”
Those around the table nodded they had all known that HPG signals were detectable even when they were not directed at a receiver in the same system.  And if anyone knew how to detect those signals it would be Com Star and the Word of Blake.  Sun-Tzu requested everyone’s attention.
Nodding both Candice and Sarah encouraged the Capellan Lord to speak.  “Before I left the Forbidden City I gave the order seize all of the Word of Blake administered HPG compounds within the Confederation.  Additionally, Magistrax Centrella and a Confederation Ambassador also requested that the Taurian Concordant likewise take the same measures.  The Magistracy had not yet made the transition to the Blakist for their communications services and are therefore able to reinforce the Taurians.”  Looking around the room he smiled slightly.  “I even requested the assistance of both the St. ives Compact and as the Archon-Prince was not present the assistance of the Duke Hasek in order to secure compounds.  He has agreed.  I would like your assurances Victor that those worlds remain under the Confederation banner.”
Victor chuckled at that and a bit of tension was relieved throughout the room.  “Of course, Sun-Tzu the assurance is given and I am sure backed up by the Hegemony?”
“While I know the Maskirovka was once a joke to your father Victor.  Let me assure you it is capable now.  We have detected a large number of Word of Blake agents moving around the Inner Sphere.  I traveled here not because I wanted to see the battle but because this may be the safest place until the HPG’s are being run by friendlier providers.  I have most of my fleet protecting the shipyards where our combined shipbuilding effort is at this moment.”  Sun-Tzu said nodding towards Kai.  “The rest of the Capellan Armed Forces is being alerted by couriers and placed on a war footing.  I suggest the rest of you as well do that.”
Victor nodded and turned to Sarah.  “Can you send the alert to your forces in the Sarna March and have them get with their AFFC liasons.  They have a secure communications method which they can use to communicate with our forces.  The alert will be slow but it is faster than JumpShip couriers.”
“I can do one better.  I can send to our embassies and to Terra and have messages sent out from the Capitals of the AFFC and your system as well as alerting the Combine as soon as possible.”  The combine Colonel who was part of the coalition staff in the back of the room visibly relaxed when that was reported.
A klaxon began sounding and the call to general quarters was being sounding throughout the ship.  Everyone in the room was startled as the screen on the far wall changed to Vice Admiral Michelle Ramirez.
“Highness, emergence wave detected at the Atreus-3 LaGrange point.  It will be, wait we are receiving intersystem HPG traffic from that location.”  A few moments passed and Ramirez put her had to here ear listened and smiled.  “Highness, Admiral Al-Bakar sends his regards.  He is present in system with TASK FORCE 4.1 and is aboard his flagship the Midway.”
“Very well Admiral send our thanks for his timely transit and update the board with what he brought.”  Sarah ordered.
         “Aye, Ma’am.”  Ramirez acknowledged.
It took several minutes but the board updated showing TASK FORCE 4.1.  Mancuso walked up to the board and reviewed it.  “He brought the Midway, California, Simon Cameron, Resolution, Port Royal.  My god he brought the Avalon.”  Mancuso said causing Victor to turn.
“He did what?”  Victor spoke before his mind could stop him.
“He brought the lead ship of the Avalon-class before we converted them to missile cruisers at the AFFC’s request.  Also brought eight of the new Typhon destroyers and a pair of the Temeraire frigates.  He also brought six heavy transports including the Moscow and Johannesburg.”  Mancuso looked to those around them.  “Admiral Al-Bakar came spoiling for a fight and with 2ND Fleet we can take the Word of Blake.  We need to watch what they do now.”
“Alright everyone needs to spread out and move to their flagships.  I want the coalition ships in reserve and to watch our League Battlegroup that just arrived.  My forces will take point on the fight get in and hit when you can.  If Admiral Mancuso see’s an opening and she orders your ships in please do it.  We won’t sacrifice anyone here.”  Sarah stated as she stood.  “Lets go drop a toaster in these techno fanatics bath water…”

Part 2

THS Midway, High Orbit
Atreus, Marik Commonwealth
Free Worlds League
21 June 6065

Admiral Mohammad Al-Bakar stood on the flag bridge of the Fleet Carrier THS Midway.  The massive carrier brought with it four aerospace fighter wings, a squadron of DropShips and thirty-two small craft of various function from shuttles, assault landers and SWAC craft to assault ships and boarding craft.  With the Admiral was the Duchess having transferred aboard to separate herself from Fleet Admiral Mancuso who would have led the fleet action against the word of Blake but was now interposing the balance of the fleet between Atreus and the now fleeing Word of Blake Navy.
“Admiral send to the fleet.  Begin landing operations.”  Sarah ordered looking into the holo tank.
“Yes Highness.”  The gruff old admiral responded.  Activating the fleet network, he spoke.  “All commands this is Hegemon.  Commence landing operations.  I say again commence landing operations.”
Various replies and confirmations began to flood the network.  With the arrival of the fourth fleet assets also came the fresh 2ND Cavalry Division.  Like her 1ST Cavalry Division whom she was still technically a Brigade commander in, the 2ND was outfitted with the latest OmniMech’s to be manufactured by the Terran Hegemony-in-Exile.  This included both Clan and Hegemony designed ‘Mechs.  New to this force was the new Spartan battle armor.  A proposed replacement for the Elemental already seeing limited service within the Hegemony.
With the Word of Blake fleet rushing for the jump points the command council voted to begin landing operations as reports of four Word of Blake Divisions on the surface were supported by the survivors of the 8TH Free Worlds Legionnaires.  Initial landings were to be conducted by the 101ST Jump Infantry Division, 10TH Lyran Guards, Red Lancers, 1ST St. Ives Lancers and the 2ND Com Guard Division.
Sarah was worried about the Com Guards.  She knew the word of Blake would be gunning for them.  She hopped with saturating the planet with multiple landing zones it would force the Word of Blake into either trying to defend everything or to concentrate forces thus allowing for an encirclement.  Already Victor had broadcasted a message asking for the surrender of all forces on planet.  She was not convinced anyone would actually listen.  She knew there was at least one Shadow Division down there and the only thing to do would be to kill them in detail.  That is why her own 2ND Brigade, 1ST Cavalry Division was designated as a reserve force.  The 2ND Cavalry Division dedicated a Brigade to supporting both the 101ST Jump Infantry and the Com Guard’s 3RD Army.
The gathered officers watched the drops being conducted.  The orbital deployments of BattleMechs and Battle Armor from the five dedicated assault forces.  The DropShips decending with the balance of the assault brigade’s conventional forces and with follow on second wave formations not slated to conduct an orbital drop.  That was when it happened.
“Highness, they’ve been spotted!”  One of her subordinate command post officers shouted from the station she was using to monitor the battle network.
   “Where.”  Sarah commanded.
   “Thermopolae Ma’am.”  She responded.
   “Seriously?”  Sarah said aghast.
“Yes Ma’am.  Precentor Grandi reports that they are protecting the pass north towards the capital.”  Lieutenant Jamie Hodgins reported.
“It was a trap, I wonder if the northern island area was even defended with heavy anti-air assets.”  Sarah turned towards Admiral Al-Bakar.  “Admiral send squadron of drones towards the capital.  I want them to make a direct approach over the island.  I want to see at what point the air defenses open up.”
“Yes Ma’am.  I have all of the flights tasked with targets that we planned to hit anyways to make it seem like a real push.”  Al-Bakar stated as he turned and began issuing orders.  An aerospace group consisting of eighteen Mk. 39 Voidseeker drone fighters split between two flights of six fighters each of 004 Interceptor and one flight of 007 Striker variants.
Sarah watched the display as the fighter group dove for the planet.  It took fifteen minutes for the drones to come into range of the surface.  They continued in being intercepted by a Level II of Blakist fighters.  One of the flights broke off and engaged them.  The other two flights continued on to their targets only taking sporadic fire.
“That’s it.  Send to the Blackjack brigade begin landing.  We are going to hit them from the rear.”  Sarah tapped in a command on her console.  A new communication window opened.  It was the face of Thomas Marik.  “Captain-General, I respectfully request the assistance of the 2ND Guards Brigade.  I’m going down to the surface and am going to relieve the Com Guards.  This will allow your 2ND Guards to secure Atreus City.”
“With pleasure Duchess.”  Thomas said.  The death of Sherryl having gouged out his heart.  “I have some information I would like you to take into account Sarah.”  He said his expression softening.
“What might that be Thomas?”  Sarah inquired.
“While Paul Marik will die for his part in the coup.  His daughter.  Corinne is the reason why I am here today.  She is an unwilling participant in these events.  I would wager that if her regiment were here she would joining our side as we landed.”  Thomas saw the skepticism in her eyes.  “I know that the actions of the fleet over Marik have clouded your opinion, but I need you to understand that Corinne is as good as anyone could be in these times.  She is not responsible for the death of your father.”
“Ok I will issue orders to the task force that she is to be taken alive.  We will sort this all out afterwards.”  She paused.  “Any word from the Knights?”
Thomas just shook his head.  “I don’t believe they will come out of hiding just yet.  I also don’t know how many of them are left.  The Second were my trouble shooters and enjoy desegregated operations allowing them to go to ground and fight an insurgency much easier than the First.”
“I hope they lived to get into hiding Thomas.  You will need good loyal troops when this fight is over.  And I know they were all good people.”  Sarah said consoling him.
“They are at that.  Another thing SAFE has a special operations unit on Wendigo.  Called the Dark Shadows.  They are currently facing off against what they have described as the Fifty-Fourth Shadow Division. I have ordered the Santorini and her escorts in to orbit to support our special forces.  If they are going to turn it would have happened by now.”  Thomas revealed.  “Marines will reinforce the garrison there until we can free up additional ground forces to face these demons.”
“Very well I will ask the Chancellor to deploy his Death Commandos and I will send the 101ST’s 2ND Brigade as they are uncommitted yet.”  Sarah said looking over the battle rosters.  “If you excuse me Thomas I have a shuttle to catch.”  She saw the look in his eye.  “I’m going to join my brigade on the ground.”
Before Thomas could say anything the line went dead.

LZ November-26
Atreus, Marik Commonwealth
Free Worlds League

The Pollux Air Defense vehicle rumbled to a stopped and deployed its stabilizers and began tracking the sky.  All around various armored vehicles and battle armored infantry were in a hyper state of awareness.  Buzzing around the sky like gnats a full wing of fifty-four Voidseeker drones were on guard as the lone Mk VII landing craft touched down and outstepped the Duchess of the Terran Hegemony-in-Exile clad in a full body cooling suit pistol strapped to her hip and carrying her ready bag.  She was met at the bottom of the stairs by a squad of armored infantry and escorted to her waiting OmniMech.
“I see you couldn’t keep out of this one Highness.”  Master Sergeant Josefosky said as Sarah approached.
“Alright Ski, is she ready?”  Sarah replied.
“Yes Ma’am.  Bravo configuration just like you wanted.”  Josefosky reported.
“Thanks Ski.  Let me get this beast moving so you all can get out of here.”  Sarah said as she climbed the ladder up into the cockpit.  She ran through the start up sequence and spotted her lance mates spread out with the rest of the Command Company securing the landing zone.  “They are just taking my safety way to seriously.”  She whispered to herself.
The massive ABM-O1 Abrams B thrummed to life and the Legion CEWS began connecting with the battle network and started populating both friendly and enemy positions as they were being reported to the network.  She saw that one of her companies had already had to call in orbital fire support from the heavy cruiser Daring assigned to support the brigade in their effort to destroy the 49TH Shadow Division as it was finally identified.  The Manei Domini – as captured Blakist Militiamen have identified – of this particular division enjoyed using inferno rounds in all of their missile and artillery weaponry.  This forced the company team holding back a Level III assault as the rest of the battalion combat team deployed to call in orbital fire support.
Sarah marched her OmniMech up into formation with the rest of her lance For this attack she was deploying the full fighting arm of her command company.  Three augmented lances with eight ABM-O1 Abrams’ and four BGL1-O Bengali’s supported by six squads of Elemental battle armored infantry.  The Headquarters battalion was moving up behind with six Pollux ADA vehicles to provide both air defense and on call fire support protected by two platoons of regular infantry motorized in light tactical trucks and other vehicles.
It wasn’t long before Sarah joined the rest of her brigade.  This time she was not going to be in direct combat if her troopers’ hand anything to say about it.  The Thermopolae pass was not as narrow as its namesake on Terra.  Here the enemy was a battalion abreast on both sides of the pass with individual machines moving forward to replace those that had fallen.  The Shadow Division had an estimated four Level III’s of strength remaining in the pass.  Four battalions.
Sarah saw the sheer wall of fire be unleashed.  Autocannon tracers, lasers, missile exhaust, particle cannon and gauss rifle bleed all crisscrossed the battlefield showing that the coalition force was literally trying to storm the gates of hell and evict the devil himself.  Swooping in out of the sky Hegemony and Com Guard aerospace fighters dropped ordnance into the interior of the pass bombing troops who had not yet joined the lines of battle to the north and south.
In the south the 11TH Com Guards were landing in order to support their sister division the 2ND.  Sarah made a note in her battle management system queuing a message to be sent to her command post and relayed to Precentor Durbin.  Requesting that the 3RD Army Commander deploy artillery as she was about to order her artillery battalion to begin a sustained bombardment of the gap’s interior.  Keying up her net.  “Darkhorse-6, this is Blakjack-6.  Standby for fire mission.  We are going to advance under a rolling barrage.  Be ready.”  Sarah ordered.
“Blackjack-6 roger.  Darkhorse will be ready to advance.”  Came the response of Colonel Charles Richmond.  Successor to the command of her provisional OmniMech regiment.
Twelve Ballista II Howitzers set in two separate firing positions and a battery of Vali II Arrow IV vehicles loaded with submunitions began firing into the gap searching out Manei Domini troops which trapped themselves in the gap.  The 2ND Com Guard Division to the south likewise began firing artillery into the gap.
Sarah was watching her battle network as UAVs and orbital reconnaissance assets continuously updated the ‘tally’ of enemy forces in the gap.  She began to doubt the numbers.  Then it hit her.  “It’s a trap.”  She called out over her lance net.  Switching to TAC 3 the task force tactical all hands net.  “FLASH, FLASH, FLASH.  All Guide on’s, Blackjack-6.  Objective Stone Wall is a trap.  Fall back now.  Disperse forces to no larger than battalion.  Execute, execute, execute.”  She switched back to the Brigade command net.  “Blackjack, this is Six actual.  Break into battalion teams and scatter.  Expect mass casualty weapons and ambushes.  No more than two battalion teams to support each other.  Every scatter.  All grounded DropShips lift for orbit.  Aerospace assets begin hunting for radiological signatures and run your MAD scanners and sweep the surrounding coastal waterways.”
She watched as her brigade scattered.  She also saw the Com Guards doing likewise.  That was when the a lance of aerospace fighters called out a missile launch from the Atreides Ocean.  The position was immediately tagged by both the pilot’s Legion CEWS and authorized for strike by the Daring.  The heavy cruiser in orbit targeted the area with its broadside and dispersed its weapons in order to cover the largest area and quickly flashed millions of gallons of water into steam with the released of the broadside 55cm naval lasers.  Quickly followed up with massive geysers erupted with the impacts of the class 30 naval autocannons.  Several volleys from each weapon type were fired before the captain ceased firing in order to observe.
Three Alamo nuclear missiles were launched towards the island of Ionia two targeted on the Com Guard and one on the Hegemony forces as the Daring made its strike.  An Alamo airburst over the 11TH Com Guard Division in the middle of disembarking its DropShips gutting the force.  A Hegemony Rouge aerospace fighter collided with the missile on its way to cover the Duchess’ Command Company.  The third missile came screaming in conducted warhead separation at thirty kilometers and deployed decoys.  The brigade’s air defense systems went into overdrive trying to intercept the warhead most killing the decoys.  In the end the missile detonated one hundred meters above Sergeant Jacobi Miller in his LGN1-O Legion OmniMech.
Sarah’s Abrams was running north as fast as the ‘Mech would take her over the broken terrain.  The world around her flash she slammed her eyes shut and ten seconds later she was slammed to the ground by the overpressure wave as it overtook her Assault Mech.  Her system was in reset as it recovered from the electro magnetic pulse from the warhead.

Captain Dana Adams watched the horror of what happened on the ground.  The mushroom clouds rising up into space.  She was sure they had gotten that submarine that launced those missiles.  “Guns, new target.  Sent to your station.”  She ordered.
Lieutenant Harry Westgate received the new data.  “Ma’am that’s close to our troops on the ground.”
“My authority.  If we don’t hit that gap now those freak shows are going to unleash the circus on the survivors.  Start at both ends of the gap and work towards the center.  Don’t let them out.”  Adams ordered the fires of hate burning in her very soul.  “Kill them all Lieutenant.”
“Aye Ma’am.  Helm flip ship and give me a two G burn.  I need to work us into the right convergence zone.  Port batteries prepare for volley firing.”  Westgate ordered receiving confirmations from around the combat information center.
In space the ancient Luxor-class heavy cruiser tumbled end over and began to burn to shift its position.  The ship could reach out and hit its target from there but the weapons officer needed to be as precise as possible there were friendlies on the ground.  As the ship settled into the correct orbital trajectory the autocannons unleashed their thunder followed by the lasers.  Striking at both ends of the Thermopolae gap and working towards the center.
Alarms began sounding.  “RADAR emissions detected.”  A voice from the sensor station called out.  Seconds later followed by.  “We’ve ben painted by LIDAR.  Detection threshold.”
Another voice added in.  “Launch blo… multiple launch blooms detected at 312 mark 153.  Three hundred kilometers out and closing.  We have incoming missiles.”
“Captain radiological alert.  We have incoming nukes.”  Another sensor station reported in.
“How many warheads incoming.”  Captain Adams demanded to know.
“I could twenty Ma’am!”  The young rating at the sensor station reported.  “They fired from what we thought were just communications satellites.”
“Communications alert the fleet.  Helm full military power use the planet and sling shot us away from those missiles.  Guns, get to work and clear my sky.  Flight ops get me fighters on those missiles. Order the group to scatter.”  Captain Adams ordered.  The bridge jumped into a flurry of activity.  The fire support group in close orbit began to scatter.

All over the northern hemisphere in orbit warships scattered.  A warship was assigned to provide cover for each brigade operating on the surface whether it was for fire support or using the ships capable telescopes to hunt for the enemy as a sensor platform.  Eight ships began maneuvering wildly.  The first to be hit was the THS Daring, the heavy cruiser took four missiles and began to tumble into the planet below.  The next get hit was the THS Hamlin.  The Destroyer didn’t even have a chance it took a missile to its drive system and began to lose orbital altitude.
The THS Olympia took four missiles across her long spine and broke in two.  The massive transport with survivors racing to lifeboats and escape pods lost the rear half of the ship to a core breach.  Both the Nassau and St. George were lost when three missiles each impacted their hulls and the ships became drifting irradiated hulks in space having broken the planets gravitational pull only to have been slowed enough for the missiles to hit and destroy the ships.  The SIS Warlock and FCS Donegal both managed to make it clear and intercept the missiles.  Missiles left in powered off launchers leapt from their launch platforms and raced after the dispersed battlegroups.  The combined fire from the Capellan – St. Ives group managed to destroy six such missiles with four making it through the outer defenses one slammed against the hull of the CCS Franco Martell failing to detonate.  Another was intercepted by St. Ives fighters short of cruiser while two missiles destroyed the destroyer CCS Anhui.  A missile impacted the SIS Justin Allard detonating and causing damage although the ship survived.
The finale casualty was the FCS Tiger that took the hit for the FCS Robert Davion in order to protect the Archon-Prince.

Sarah’s Abrams’ slowly regained function.  She managed to get herself back to her feet.  The picture was grim.  Two mushroom clouds were still rising to the south massive debris clouds were in the air from what she could only assume was orbital weapons fire.  Her Legion CEWS was connecting with every platform that it could reach out to.  She was already noticing that around half of her brigade was not reporting in.  She had one functioning field node that was taking reports from the infantry and digitizing it and pushing it back out over the Legion system.  It looked like the survivors of the 49th Shadow Division were pushing out of the gap on the warpath.
She tried to speak but tasted copper in her mouth.  She must have bit her tongue.  “Guide on’s, guide on’s, guide on’s.  SITREP follows.”  She gave a second before continuing.  “Nuclear weapons detonated over the battlefield north and south of the Thermopolae gap.  All Blackjack elements are to rally at position NA 271 513.  Enemy is pushing north out of the gap.  We need to hold the line and push them back into the gap.”
She began to receive confirmations and the Legion CEWS began rebuilding the brigade hierarchy began to shuffle as the more senior systems reported in and reassigned command to those who were left.  Sarah discovered she had around sixty-three OmniMechs left after the nuke hit.  What was worse was the losses of Nighthawk equipped infantry.  Her Elemental suits and armor failed a little bit better.  She had about seven battalions of troops left give or take.
Reaching the rally point Sarah went to work reorganizing the brigade.  And that’s when the circus showed up.  The Word of Blake’s 49TH Shadow Division attacked her remaining troops with three Level III’s of troops.  The battalions slammed into the Hegemony line lasers and missiles crisscrossing the battlefield.  Sergeant Tanaka in her Bengali B reached out and blocked the swinging Blade from a Manei Domini Seraph OmniMech.  She countered with her two heavy large lasers knocking the Seraph back before bringing her large vibroblade back into the fight and slaming down into the left torso of the Blakist.
The Blakist fired its ultra-class 10 autocannon into Tanaka forcing her back.  It was quickly followed up with a flight of SRMs from its streak six-pack and a blast from its snub-nose particle cannon.  Tanaka staggered, fired her extended range large lasers at point blank range and brought down her vibroblade again this time striking true crushing the particle cannon and cutting into the cockpit in one vicious swing after another.  Tanaka pulled her blade away and brought it in for one last swing from the right and knocked the immobile machine over.
All around the battle was fierce.  Sarah had singled out a ‘Mech the book was labeling as an Archangel.  Sarah’s LRMs reached out to open up the engagement.  Followed up by her extended range large laser.  She advanced on the demon OmniMech firing her gauss rifle and another flight of her missiles.  The Archangel fired its heavy particle cannons from each arm striking true on Sarah’s Abrams.  Sarah fired her gauss rifle again as soon as it cycled backed up by her laser.  She was now only a couple hundred meters out now and watched as nearly a platoon of mixed Elemental and Nighthawk infantry and a Von Luckner and a pair of Chevalier tanks joined their Duchess in her charge against what she thought initially was only a lone OmniMech which turned into a demi-company.  Sarah halted her charged and let lose with her massive ultra class 20 autocannon laying in the triggers and watching the heavy rounds cutting deep into the Blakist OmniMech.  The Chevalier’s joined in with their lasers and the Von Luckner fired its LB 10-X autocannons as fast as they would fire.  A squad of Elementals added their SRMs to the conflagration and the Archangel shuddered and exploded taking out a squad of Blakist infantry as it advanced mixed in with Battle Armor.
The coalition faced nine different types of battle armor that day.  The fighting was close this force was much larger than a normal Word of Blake Division.  “X-Ray, Blackjack-6.  Where the hell are they all coming from?”  She called out.
It took about a minute before the next highest command post came up on the net.  It was one of the infantry regiments command posts and Colonel Thompson.  “Blackjack-6, this is Spartan X-Ray.  Falconer reports we are facing two Shadow Divisions.  They have the Fifty-fourth Shadow Division attacking into their lines now. Over.”
Sarah thought about that report.  “Midway, Blackjack-6.”  Her communications switching the network.
“Blackjack-6 this is Midway.”  She heard the familiar voice of Al-Bakar.
“What is the Captain-General reporting from Wendigo?”  She asked.
“Captain-General Marik went down to the surface with the 2ND Guards and is fighting in the capital now with the 8TH Legionnaires and a battalion of Manei Domini.”  Al-Bakar reported.  “The Santorini reports one full Level III of ‘Mechs and Battle Armor is on the surface and they are mopping up with orbital strikes and aerospace attacks with the Dark Shadow’s now.”
She thought about that as they loosed another flight of LRMs at a Blakist bulldog in the distance.  “Roger Midway.  Blackjack-6 out.”  Sarah signed off.  Switching back to brigade.  “X-Ray, Blackjack-6.  Get us some air support our artillery is gone.  We are advancing.  Six out…”

Part 3

Parliament, Atreus City
Atreus, Marik Commonwealth
Free Worlds League
29 June 3065

Thomas Marik, once Captain-General of the Free Worlds League sat at the desk of the members of the system of Rexburg.  His shoulder immobilized and in an inflatable leg caste.  Thomas was forced to eject from his Cerebus BattleMech and ended up flying through a crumbling building and out the otherside.  He was recovered by infantry and armor from the 2ND Free Worlds Guards who watched him eject.  They quickly evacuated him to a field hospital outside of the city.  Reinforcements from the 5TH Crucis Lancers moved into the city to help the Guards clear out the rest of the Blakist and traitors.
At another seat was Archon-Prince Victor Steiner-Davion and Chancellor Sun-Tzu Liao going over the disposition of forces across the planet.  Duke Kai Allard-Liao was still in the field supervising the surrender of a mixed bag of three Word of Blake Divisions which were not even present on Atreus but had each contributed a Level III or two each making it seem like they had larger numbers.  The Word of Blake substituted their forces with numerous battalion and smaller mercenary commands.  Those surrendered almost as soon as word of the last Manei Domini troops were dead.
Precentor’s Durbin and Grandi sat with General Harold Winthrop commander of the 2ND Cavalry Division and the man who led his divisional cavalry squadron and command company directly into the teeth of the Word of Blakes 45TH Shadow Division to save the 2ND Com Guards.  Now reduced to a single division of combat effective troops the Com Guard 3RD Army on Atreus.  The 323RD Division was being mobilized to reinforce the Guards along with the Fifth Army.
Sarah sat a few rows back at some random seat.  She looked down and noticed it was for the system of Molokai.  She snorted drawing a few of the others attention.  That was when Fleet Admiral Mancuso walked up to her.  “Highness, reports are confirmed.  The HPG network is down in the League.  Anywhere there is not a Word of Blake unit the network is not reporting.  I believe the operators shut the transmitters down and probably secured critical components to keep them from operating.”
Sarah nodded.  “Precentor Durbin, can ComStar prepare teams to move in bring them back online?”
The commander of the 3RD Com Guard Army looked thoughtful.  “I have no idea Duchess.  I will however make it a priority to get on it.”
“If you have any issues I will have Hegemony Communications Command assist you but they will be busy otherwise.”  Sarah said.
Mancuso looked at her Duchess inquisitively.  Sarah just laughed again.  “We are going to be hunting the Word of Blake.  No one here not even Com Star has the skills to track the HPG network the way we do.  We lost seventeen Warships thousands of Soldiers and Sailors.  We need to track them down and remove them from the universe.  This fight…”  Sarah said standing from her seat and walking around the table to approach the woman sitting at the sergeant at arms seat below the Marik eagle signet of the Free Worlds League.  “just became about the Shadow’s of our Dead did it not Colonel Marik?”
The woman looked up into the eyes of Sarah and nodded slowly.  Colonel Corrine Marik, daughter of the traitor Paul Marik and Captain-General of the Free Worlds League thanks to a coup launched by her father cleared her throat.  “Yes, it did Duchess Ryan.  We also need to find the real Thomas Marik and make sure he is brought to justice for the death and destruction he has unleashed.”

I just want to take this time to thank everyone who has been reading this.  I wish I had more feed back but thats ok as well.  I am pretty much at the end of this story.  It is almost 45 thousand words and 84 pages long.  I could keep going or I can go ahead and start the next one of the planned story.  I know I have the special ops line buried deep in this forum but it was really hard for me to continue that one and I most likely won't.  I might have to rewrite it and outline it better.

So.  Your opinions.  Stop here and start the next phase or continue?

Hi Kasaga,

to me this was a rather well-written and paced story, but the major gripe I have with it is, that it is kind of "jump into the middle of things" without providing any explanation where the THiE comes from, where all those forces are resourced from. I've tried to find the prequel to this story also named Project LEGION which apparently starts at the time the Star League falls apart after the Kerensky-Amaris Civil War got finished but that one kind of ended in the middle of things as well, so ... yeah.

It would've been good for the first reader on this story to provide some more world-building, i.e. where are the roots of everything.

Could be that I've not looked deep enough, but that's at least my feeling on this story.

But like I said initially, it's a good one! ;-)

Look at Reply number 34 Download and read Forgotten Treasures A2 (don't worry about the A2) Also is the field manual in the same download link.  Those explain a lot.  The FT one is the first story.  This is the second.

Thanks Kasaga!

I suppose this document / field manual is the lead in for this story here? If so I would poke you to do some additional world building by following up on your other Project LEGION story here on the boards ... this one ...  8)

Yeah I just found out that I sucked at writing small team stuff.  I'll work on expanding it.

I have been enjoying the story, maybe I don't say things as much.

I would love to see from the pov of a spec op unit

"For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast, And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed:And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill, And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!"

This one is done.  I'm working on the prequel to these two stories called into the shadows.  The next one when that is done will be the big one I think.  The one that I might just keep going on and run like everyone else does their AU's where its just a long running story/timeline.
