"...But I'm more than just a little curious,
How you're planning to go about making your amends
To the Dead."

-A Perfect Circle "The Noose"

Hollister Burrow, February 3, 3076...

Martha sponged her patient's skin with tender care while the heart-lung machine pipped and intravenous feeds supplied nutrients and fluids.

"Linda's really progressed a lot, Nikki." she said quietly, "Your friend has become very good at making friends here.  She couldn't be around today, because she's...at sea."

her patient showed no reaction, as she laid the sponge aside.  "Dad says he's going to stop by soon...your internal injuries are mostly healed up, but I'm worried about this coma, I didn't see a lot of brain damage, Nick, when they brought you in and we stabilized you...and I know you're in there, somewhere...why won't you wake up?"

Before she got up, Martha activated the electrostimulators to prevent muscular atrophy in long-term patients, letting the low-impact system exercise muscles that were still decaying from disuse, a minor precaution.

"Why won't you wake up?"  she asked again.

Before she left the intensive care room, Martha rechecked the catheters, emptied the waste bags, and let the 'exercise machine' finish.

"...now it's time to serve your conscience, Overseas
Comin' in fast, Over Me..."

-REM, "Orange Crush"

KCGS Grantsville, somewhere in the Blake Hegemony's spacelanes...

Captain Giao Pham looked over the tactical plot-the enemy's shipping had shifted to a route they'd already planted monitors along.

"I see...a monolith, looks like she's loaded with six supply droppers plus two Mule Q-ships and...that's a titan." she noted, "Looks like a serious target, relay the coordinates to the group, they've just deployed their sail, they're going to be here for a while."

They'd been lurking this system for a few days, the Blakist transport was probably headed for Dieron, based on the composition of ships she was carrying, a couple heavy wings of enemy fighters and an escort force of pocket warships meant the supplies were likely to be critical military or communications components.

"Who's responding?" Giao asked, running probabilities on the enemy's reaction force in her mind's eye.

"North Park and New Saigon say their monitor points are bust, Cap, the Commodore says we're greenlit if we think we can take 'em."

"Um...North Park, that's a local, aren't they?" she asked.

"Confirmed, one of Morgan's haulers with a couple assault droppers and a wing of fighters."

"Letter of Marque or actual freebooter?" Giao asked quietly.

"Letter of Marque confirmed issued by Commodore vu Dao on behalf of Her Grace the Duchess of Kowloon, confirmed by Archon Adam Steiner as of January 16, Cap...they're legitimate on the network."

she relaxed, noting the way the Blakist combat air patrol spread out around their transport.  "Good...and bad.  Good, because it means our friendlies can make salvage and maybe capture the monolith-bad because it means we're going to have to nerf the shots so they can...okay, load low-yeild antishipping warheads on the missile tubes, forward to New Saigon to do the same, mission profile is jumpship interdict and capture, rather than destruction...we're go in six hours, Nav, I want a point-jump inside that perimeter, can you do it?"

"Working on it."

Paint it on the side facing away from the star. Successor State JumpShips did so: I specifically recall art of a JumpShip with the Combine's logo.

Martin Home, Hollister Burrow, security area...

"Dad, it's not a Just War, okay? it's Just a War."  Joseph Martin was a prisoner in his family's home. It was really the first time for him, having his movement restricted and controlled.

officially, he wasn't really a prisoner-he was a patient, waiting for a therapist.  He was also very much in need of being watched, the injuries he'd suffered in November weren't fully healed and were rather severe.

But Lance Corporal Angie Seratin 383 and her fireteam of Kowloonese marines weren't there as therapy aids-they were there to make sure Joseph Martin didn't go visiting the Bureau of Terran Affairs.

"We even have foreign soldiers occupying the burrow." Joseph added.

"Not soldiers, Marines." Angie said from the doorway, "And we're not occupying-Steadholder David Martin can order us out at any time, and we'll go."

"Miss Seratin, could you give my son and I some privacy?" David asked.

"Aye sir." she stepped out of the room, "Buzz when you're ready to leave, sir." and closed the hatch.

"NOT a just war?" David asked, "You've seen it for yourself, Joseph, you know what they're doing, not just outside the Solar System, but right here at home..."

"It has to be winnable, and it must be fought by forces with the authority." Joseph said, "These soldiers-Nicole's soldiers-they're  a rabble armed with obselete junk, their ships are retreaded garbage, their command structure is divided and fighting itself, they can't win, father...and if we join them, which you seem determined to do, we will be dragged down with them."

David's eyes flashed for a moment, "is that all?" he asked, "You think it can not be won? that's your argument?"

"You know I'm right-a just war cannot be fought if there is no chance of victory." Joseph stated.

"I seem to recall Nicky thought Kearney was in that category." David said, "And I recall you believed the same thing. He is dead, his assets dispersed..."

"Uncle Jack was one man-and Nick sed-"  Joseph's rant was cut off by David's backhand.  The younger man stared open-mouthed at his father.

"Your brother was raped...and you not only kept it a secret from me but you've chosen to blame the victim." David said quietly, "I look at my son, and see every mistake I've ever made...and that's both of you." he stated coldly, "Somehow, in all my teaching you, even in my example I have failed as a father...and as a man of the book.  One son is a coward and the other is a maniac, but at least the maniac was man enough to admit his wrongs, to try and atone for his actions, and took steps to protect others-you leveraged what you knew for personal gain, doubling down on your hypocrisies!"

"That doesn't mean I'm wrong." Joseph sulked, "this war you've forced us into-we can not defeat the Word of Blake."

"That, remains to be seen, Joseph." David told his oldest son, and buzzed the door.  "try to have some dignity when your stepmother comes in later tonight."

KCGS Nueva Pueblo II...

They'd arrived in the Sol system with most of the ammunition removed, this was no longer the case.  They'd arrived with a Captain-who was now in intensive care, and they'd arrived with a short crew.

These were being taken care of, now.

Commander Linda Sithers finished going over the damage report from the last sortie, and leaned back in the 'Sea-cabin's chair.

a knock.

"It's open." she said.

Lt. Harrow poked his head in, "Hey ca-...XO, um, crew were wondering..."

"no word on the Captain yet, nope." Linda said, "but she's still the Captain until otherwise."

she got out of the chair, and met him in the doorway.

"The Commodore's getting impatient with that." he told her.

"Commodore vu Dao thinks it's bad for morale, yeah, I know." Linda said, "But she's not here-"

"Um..."

"What?"

"the Brightsville just linked up with our tender, and you've gotten a special message on the blox." he said, using the slang term for 'Black box'.  He handed her an offprint, "We're supposed to link up for new orders, and they've got a resupply for the combat stores."

"Hope they've also got a body-and-fender with them." she snapped quietly.

With that, she stepped out of the closet-like space that served as the captain's 'admin office' and onto the command deck.

Gordon handed her the offprint from the blox, and waited as she read it.

Quote
To: Sithers, Linda, Acting Commander, KCGS Nueva Pueblo II
From: vu Dao, Commodore, Coast Guard Operations Group 14

RE: Resupply and new orders.

First, condolences on the condition of Captain Minh.
Second, Congratulations on your efforts with the Sol Belters, your work's made this whole mess a lot less complicated.  Recommend you sand the enamel off the temporary oakleaves, they're permanent, I've got the promotion packet waiting for you at the Tender.

Third: Business.  You are instructed to proceed to preplot KINGSTON to rendezvous with Tender Gloria, there to take on the rest of your crew, along with a full loadout of combat supplies.  While there, you will take a few minutes to meet with me. Topic of discussion will be your situation, as well as further operational requirements.

Again, I'm sorry about Nicole Minh's situation.  Should she recover, allowances will be made, but for the time being, Commander Sithers, you are the Captain of the Nueva Pueblo II, I expect you no later than 0730 Nha Tranh Standard time.

-Bianh vu Dao
Commodore, Kowloon and Lyran Coast Guard

Linda checked her wristwatch, did some mental calculations, then, "All hands secure for transit and jump, we've got orders.  RTO, send a message encryption Job to Hollister Burrow-we're not coming to dinner tonight."

MS Gloria, dwarf system  from Sol...

Rendezvous point 'Kingston' was in an empty system lit by a guttering  white dwarf star that was verging on blinking out, the system around it contained debris, including a few 'almost a planet' like bodies, lots of strab dust, and not much else.

The Gloria was an aging, but recently repaired, Star Lord class altered to do two basic jobs: 1, act as a transport for three 'Behemoth' class dropships-two fuel-tankers and one munitions transport, and the rest of the collars on the ship were given over to carrying an unpressurized yard structure and it's assorted support elements, save for the last collar, which was occupied by a 'carrier modified' Overlord-the only formally "Lyran Naval" unit and command in the group.

It wasn't quite as good as having a Faslane or other dedicated yardship, but the concept was considered of great use by the Lyran Naval brass, who insisted on 'owning' the bigger tenders like the MS Gloria.

Bianh had already informed Kommandant Rowe whose command was senior here-and she'd had to have detailed, written orders from the Archon to do it.

The forward operations of intelligence gathering and commerce interdiction inside enemy space belonged, until the Alliance was ready, to the Coast Guard.

Forward Base KINGSTON was off the maps as far as Victor, or Beresick were concerned.  This had taken a lot of talking by Admiral Li's staff to arrange-the location of the tender had to be kept a secret, just like the distribution of the Cutters now either running missions, or about to run them, in the very den of the Word of Blake's naval power, and it was an open secret among the Coasties and many of the other services, that Comstar was about as secure as a wire-screen window when it came to operational security issues.

She came with a list of jobs-not just hitting the enemy's shipping, but other jobs...like contacting a few of the 'off the books' factions and drawing them into the war, or at least, assuring their neutrality until it was over.

Personally, Bianh preferred it if independent worlds like the Columbia States stayed neutral, because she had a weird feeling about Stone's incredible charisma and what it could lead to that she didn't discuss with even her closest colleagues.

still, they want us to at least approach them...

at worst, she hoped, it would be like Metis-officially uninvolved but with enough adventurers or dissidents to give some support.

So a war is only just to Joe if you are pretty certain to win, and your troops and kit are all bright and shinier than the enemy?  Tell me, did his copy of the Bible remove Maccabees?  ::)  Or how about Joshua?  Who was one of twelve spies sent in to scout Canaan?

Not to be trite, but yes, the Bible they're using did remove Maccabees and Joshua would be seen as a special circumstance (direct order from God Himself).

Also remember that Joe is not the best example of a Fundamentalist.  He's deeply, DEEPLY flawed and has been living off of his father's reputation for years.  In short, he's a coward and this is just more proof of that cowardice.  Now what he's saying does have some truth to it, but it has nothing to do with shinny new kit, it's got more to do with recognized authority with a legitimate grievance.  By mentioning their equipment, he's attacking their legitimacy indirectly by saying that if they were legit, they'd have good kit, which is a logical fallacy.

KCGS Grantsville

They'd caught the enemy monolith by complete surprise-Giao had held the attack until the hauler had pulled his escorting dropships into dock, and was actually preparing to jump.

The SLDF actually pioneered the tactic-it relied on ships with standard, active safeties on their jump drives-the Crazy Jane, as it's called, trips the overrides on a ship's jumpcore when another core comes into close proximity.  This prevents a lethal misjump.

It also shuts the core down.

"Now." she ordered.

Discontinuity

she blinked the jump-visions from her eyes, as she spoke the next order, "Fire all batteries, target dropships and maneuver drives!"

On the enemy vessel, she knew, they would still be trying to clear the EM surge that tripped control breakers and fried certain minor systems-the surge was the result of having a jump emergence wave hit at close proximity.

One of the small benefits of the so-called 'primitive' jumpcore used on vessels like the Brightsville, was size-the emergence point was tiny compared to a standard core vessel-mostly because the Sampan Bloc II class ships were signifcantly smaller than most jumpcore vessels to begin with.

Nevermind warships.

The effect was similar to rubbing sand in an opponent's eyes while simultaneously crotch-kicking them, and giving them a wedgie.

The application of capital missiles and close-range naval lasers just hammered it home.

The carrier attached at the flank-ventral collar split open under the assault, her fuel bunkers contributing more explosion to the explosion.

The forward Q-ship, an armored mule armed with capital missiles, fighter bays, and advanced weapons, was pretty much helpless, still locked to the collar for the moment, vulnerable flank and engine-bays open to the assault of missiles from the Grantsville's forward tubes.

Similar catastrophic events were playing out along the length of the heavy hauler.  Giao could almost imagine the panic in the drive control room as weapons fire opened helium tanks to space, removing KF coolant and rupturing valves and lines.

Some of the Blakists were on-point though-from the far side, a drive plume showed one of the escort droppers was free and starting to manuever.

"Now, Carla, go black."

The Grantsville's engineering chief hit the override shutdown, taking down power to the bulk of their systems seconds before New Saigon appeared on the far side of the enemy ship-a second 'crazy jane' maneuver that hammered enemy systems mid-reboot, followed by a second wave of naval fire and missiles-these aimed to engage anything that had managed to undock.

"bring us up."  Giao ordered.

Systems rebooted, power indicators came up green again.

"Damn, you really got ****** up, didn't you?"  He was familiar, a presence.  she could smell him, a faint, salty odor, the tang of chemical residues, and a flash of alcohol.  "really, I should be thanking you for getting rid of that S.O.B.-I never had the nerve to do that...but you're too busy feeling sorry for yourself, aren't you?  HOw about a change of scenery..." his voice was getting higher, and the room faded..

Nicole was standing, firm on the ground, at the bottom of the well.

The young man facing her was sandy-haired and narrow-hipped, his lip curled in a disdainful grimmace.  "You know, I liked how we looked when we left."  He said to her, and she understood.

"Who are you?" she asked.

"You know who I am.  I'm no angel, nor anything else supernatural...I'm you." he said, "See, we're in a coma, right? plenty of time to just be with ourself...and what do you know, there's more than one of ourself in here."

"But-"

"Oh, the look, right...yeah, this is what we'd look like, if you hadn't..or we hadn't, had our DNA resequenced and a bunch of surgeries." he twirled a bit, "Really not too bad, I'd think. More dad than mom, a little bit broader in the shoulders, some more chest than gut...Of course, there's the little problem, right?"  he told her, "Joseph isn't entirely wrong, is he? it's okay, just you, you, and us, and of course, god...who already knew."

"What do you mean?" she spat.

"Come on.  If you're going to be dishonest with yourself, you're not going to get out." he told her, "how does it go? you can't repent if you reject responsibility for your sins, and without it, you can't be saved, can you?"

he walked up to her in this other place, "seriously, Nicole.  honesty.  You were different...still are, but at least you did something about it-I was never who you were, even when you were me, that's why you went to Joe first, instead of straight to dad."

spit it out.

"You wanted to be mom."  he said, "right past all the threats of hell and damnation, you wanted to be mom-or be like her.  How could you tell dad what Uncle Jack was doing, when you were carrying that?  So you told Joseph.  It's alright, you needed to tell somebody, wanting it from the right person isn't hte same as being forced to give it up, there's a huge gulf between consent, and rape...but Joe already guessed you were...'different' didn't he? and so now, we've got double the guilt, so you tried to cope...how many times was it? oh, right, you try over and over to block it...well, guess what? you're not going to be able to block it from me."

no!

"look at it, Nicole! you deliberately set us up to die, and it's not the first time." He made her see it-remember it, "This is just the latest, and as part of you, I'm sick of it-you could have, you should have stuck to the plan at the Comstall Station, not the one you made in secret, but the one you conned all those people that trusted you with!"

Who ARE YOU??

"You. I told you.  Maybe your conscience, or your survival instinct, maybe just a result of the brain damage you brought on yourself, I'm part of you...and I'm not the only one here."

the air turned dank and cold, so very cold.

"If he's the angel, I'guess I'm the devil." a voice-her voice, rasped.  Nicole looked...and flinched at the wild eyed, starved, thing with blood and gore slicked lips.  "I don't mind dying anymore, we're never getting out of this place..." it-she-continued, "but god it would be nice to fill that void...so empty inside! so lonely, just us, you and me and nobody else...not like it should be, but you picked it, Nikki, because you wouldn't let anyone touch us...not that I blame you, not with me in here...but it wouldbe soo sweet..."

Poor David-- every parents utter nightmare and the words that will never help, but will never stop being repeated in the dark marches of the night: "What if i had somehow done better..."

"So...hungry..."

No, make it stop!

"I can't make it stop, only you can."  she turned, and there was another one.  This one looked like she did, Nicole Minh in full dress uniform, sitting on the steps of Qua Hall in Ia Drang.  "See, that's the thing, isn't it?  All the discipline in the galaxy, doesn't stop you from wanting stuff-it just stops you from doing something unspeakable to get it...only you did something unspeakable, so now I can't help you until you're willing to help yourself."

"There is someone who can help." Nicholas said, stepping out of the crowd to sit beside Nicole-in-uniform.

"Yeah...I suppose there might be...only, I don't think we ever really believed in him.  faith wasn't ever one of our stronger virtues."

"You did always question too much." he agreed, "Keeping in mind what we were struggling with when we were me."

"You believe." other-Nicole said.

"Well, yeah...I do.  So does she" he jerked a thumb at the degraded beast-self.

"But there's a conflict."

"Of course there is.  I hated being this way." He said, "Everything always wrong, the wrong feelings, the wrong wants, the wrong reactions even-I didn't fight back, but somehow, when I became her..."

Other-Nicole nodded, "yeah, and she became me...so what happened?"

"We came home." Beast-Nicole said, "we tried to give it all up..."

"Not that simple-once we stopped trying to die, it was inevitable we'd try to make amends."  Other Nicole said, "Inevitable we'd have to accept what we were, what I was...and resolve that with what I am."

"We can still die, make it stop, make it end." beast-Nicole said.

"that's a mortal sin too." Nicholas shook his head, "It has to be a natural death, suicide is a sin."

"Setting it up could be seen as suicide." Other-Nicole stated, "or letting them kill us-and think about the people who rely on me now?"

"Linda Loves you." beast-Nicole hissed at Nicholas, "She does, you know it...do we want to make her hurt more? bad enough we can't-"

"It's a crush, it's a phase." He said.

"no it isn't...she can't have you, but she wants you, I know the hunger." beast Nicole said, "She doesn't want me, and that's why you won't let her, because I'm in here and you know it-the barriers are down and you know it..."

You wouldn't hurt her.

"no, but you do." the Beast said, then did a gruesome pantomime, "Oh poor Nikki, can't stand being touched-it's because of me, because when you let them touch you, I come closer to the surface-all that stuff you hate so much inside you, that's me, Nikki, I never left the cell, but I'm in here and I'm you-I'm the reason you couldn't kill yourself or let yourself die, I'm in here and you're afraid of me."  Beast Nicole sharpened as the others faded, "I won't let you die, I won't let you just quit...it's me.  He knows, when you're close to it, he lets me out, let's me talk to you in the deepest reactions.  I made you duck, I made you climb, I made you fight back when all you wanted was for them to take you apart...and I'm not going to let you give up now."

"I didn't give it all up to let you...let me suffer like that either." Nicholas said.

"it's not logical or rational to lay down and die-not when we have so much work to do." Nicole-in-uniform added.

but what about-

"HE is always here."  Nicholas told her, "he is here, he knows, but this is not his place, he doesn't work directly, and he doesn't answer questions outright-you're supposed to figure it out, or you're supposed to have faith, and that figures it out.  NOBODY gets answers until the final day-ours isn't now."

"you're slacking." Uniformed Nicole added, "from what we remember, HE doesn't generally look with favour on slackers, or those so arrogant they think they can force an answer from Him."

I think I'd rather have 6 or Baltar in my head than Gollum-Nichole.
