I don't know why you felt the need to post the deck plan. The Inner Sphere does not know what the internals oi a Colonial warship look like.

I'm simply pointing out that them continually concluding it has no grav decks is... stupid. The smallest grav deck you can mount on a warship is 50m diameter. Just because the Galactica looks like a rectangular box does not mean it can't have a grav deck hidden inside it. As I've pointed out the Galactica is 180m tall. It can have a 150m grav deck inside it and nobody would be able to tell. And it's not like they're even under any illusions about her size. They've already pegged her as a battleship.

Furthermore, neither exposed grav decks nor skyscraper profiles are hard and fast rules for Inner Sphere warship design. the Concordat's own Winchester class has a flattened profile and has 2 grav decks.

So does the Star League's own Monsoon and Farragut classes.

Heck we can even go smaller. The Suns' own Robinson class doesn't look like a skyscraper either.

AN: I'm currently working ridiculous amounts of overtime, so my time is limited. But I am an essential worker and if idiots can't keep spreading this virus, I'm at least making a profit off their stupidity by gaming the Employee Stock Purchase Plan  ;D

I was early on, doing the crazy OT and had limited time.  But at least you have a stock purchase plan

gonna point out, the artists abandoned engineering a long time ago, one of the reasons why when TRO 3057 was new-printing, people were making fun of the ship art, was that it doesn't and didn't work without star-trek-like gravity plates that don't exist in the physics of the canon.

Artists often forget, when making something that looks cool on a skateboard, things like "Space doesn't have wind resistance" and "which way is down for the people INSIDE the ship?"

the art examples you're using, are a perfect example of this.  Under thrust, to look out those prominent front windows, your bridge crew have to be laying down on the deck.

Because when it's  under thrust, that's where down is and those windows become Skylights.

The core rules for interacting with me:

1.) I am not a moderator, game developer, member of Cryptic staff, relative of any members of cryptic staff, not close friends with anyone involved with the game, not a distributor of product, not an employee, employer, professional reviewer, or member of any powerful conspiracies.  What I think is my own and has no impact on the Battletech franchise in any way, shape, or form.

2) If you don't like something I've said, refer to rule 1.  If you do, god help you poor soul, you're screwed up.

I've long thought those windows were window dressing anyway. Just strips of glass or similar transparent material layered over armor. Not actual viewports.
It's not like the crew needs to look out the viewports to know what's happening. They use holotanks for that.
Most of the action in space happens BVR.

May 1st, 2574, Taurus’s Fleet Marshalling Grounds

Pride of Taurus, Pride of New Vandenberg, and Pride of Ishtar sailed with refurbished flight pods with retrofitted Lightings in mock dogfights with Colonial Vipers. Further off the Sword of Avalon, Sword of Santos, Sword of Excalibur, Sword of Durandal, Sword of Damocles, and Sword of Purity were conducting gunnery drills, the six Minotaur-class Gunships shattering asteroids in the process.

The Colonial Battlestar Galactica and its smaller sister Pegasus hung near an even more massive 9km diameter by 12 kilometer tall Colonial Mobile Shipyard, which was busy overhauling 16 Concordat Frigates at once to Colonial Standards in armor, engines, fusion plants, artificial gravity, inertial compensators, and FTL Drives. A smaller version called Daidalos, now in Taurian livery, was overhauling five Dart-class Cruisers.  Six Winchester-class cruisers waited their turn for an overhaul in the Concordat’s own yards which had Colonial Engineers working alongside Taurian Engineers. Nine Pinto-class corvettes were in the process of being scrapped and replaced by superior Colonial Hesperus-class Corvettes that dispensed with the flight capabilities to mount missile tubes. 30 ships were in slipways being built keel up with Colonial Technology.

Several smaller Colonial Flattops were busy overhauling Tigress Assault Shuttles and Lightings while medium sized tenders overhauled dropships.

For Marshal David Santos, of the newly created 1st Royal Guard Fleet, this was a plum assignment in which he could even smoke while aboard ship. Standing in Pride of Taurus’s War Room, he could direct the actions of his fleet. Operators in the upper portion handled communications overseen by Commodore Markand who was both his XO and head of Demi Squadron 1. Space Master Saladin ran the Ship from CIC, which was one room over. On the wall was a plaque commemorating the ship’s previous actions in the Cylon War, when it was known as the Battlestar Solaria. Out of respect to the Ship, he kept it up there.

Santos’ Colonial Liaison Officer was Vice Admiral Helena Cain who had recently arrived to replace Vice Admiral Hebe who was retiring and being appointed as Colonial Ambassador to Taurus in 4 weeks. She was attended by her Aide, Captain Kendra Shaw who was working the rosters, and her Chief Engineer, Commander Barry Garner. They were currently going over a design for a new Carrier Frigate, codenamed Titan.

“Even though we demonstrated the superiority of kinetics, the Titan’s main armament is 20 dual-barrel MNPPCs backed by 24 capital missile launchers and 80 large lasers scattered around the hull.” Commander Garner spoke as he adjusted the design of 512 meter long ship, which resembled a miniature Battlestar, on the map monitor in its 3D mode.

“We aren’t fighting your foes, and we aren’t going to war with you. Our potential foes are the Inner Sphere and Pirates.” Santos reminded the kinetics obsessed Colonials pointing with his pipe to empathize it. “Yes your armor technology throws current lasers we use out the window, we just can’t generate the necessary power without destroying our ships in the process. And we can if necessary swap these weapon out later.”

Admiral Cain gave Garner a glance to cut off his reply and nodded to Santos.

Continuing, Santo laid out his plan, “The purpose of Titan is to create an independent long-range raider carrying two reinforced ASF Divisions of 30 ASFs, comprising 20 Lightings and 10 Raptors. This also allows for the 200 Marines it will be carrying, to launch boarding actions and even attack surface targets. A variant on this design that removes the Lightings, increases the keel at the bottom, removes the missile tubes and turns that into a 5 shuttle landing pad, enables us to deliver a Jump Mech Regiment of one Mech Battalion of 48 Jump Mechs backed by 3 Jump Infantry Battalions of 810 troops, with the five shuttles carrying the Support and HQ company, then performing logistical runs once they are deployed, freeing the Raptor Division to focus on air support.”

“Can’t fault the logic of this design for your needs, no doubt my counter-parts in the Colonial Army would be shaking their heads at your mechs if they weren’t knee-jerking at the Cylon look they evince.” Admiral Cain spoke as she checked the ongoing mock dogfights and frowned as 20 Colonial Vipers were stricken from the board.

“Next on our agenda was setting up the FTL factories to produce your drives.” Santos changed the subject as he pulled out the transfer of technology plan.

“We have 4 more Mobile Shipyards enroute of the Daidalos Class. Since your opponents are incapable of operating in the atmosphere of Gas Giants, you can place them…”

“Sir, High Priority Message from the Fast Courier Crandall.” Commodore Markand interrupted the meeting.

“What is it,” Santos ordered.

“Large Pirate group roaming Anaheim. Requesting urgent support to clear them from the mining belts. Marshal Betsy Callen, head of Anaheim Defense Region.” Markand read out while inserting a thumb drive to bring up the region and the relayed intel.

“Pirates my ass, AFFS is trying to lure us into a trap. Leopard CVs are too new and rare yet to be obtained by pirates.” Santos figured right off the back.

“My briefing docs say they’re pompous and condescending, but not stupid. Why would they go to this trouble?” Cain asked as she observed the information.

“Because you gave us 9 Battleship tonnage ships. It completely upsets their strategic calculus. They want a war. Most likely they got that huge Battleforce hanging out in strike range of Anaheim for that very purpose. Sorry Admiral, but I need to consult with the Lord Protector.”

Terra, June 1st, 2574

Viola Steiner growled as Ian Cameron stared at the latest intelligence from the Periphery alongside Hehiro Kurita. Marion Marik was nearby reviewing video feeds from mock dogfights between Colonial and Taurian ASFs. Ursula Liao, the youngest Great House Lord present was calmly drinking tea while Alexander Davion read through reports.

Shandra Noruff Cameron spoke as she tried to make sense of these Mysterious Colonials’ ship designs. “Ian, these turrets on the so-called Jupiter-class Battlestars and Minotaur-class Gunships are manned, except for the massive NACs on the prows of the Minotaurs.”

“What? That puts them horizontal to the direction of gravity. They aren’t even wearing proper pressure suits.” Ian noted as he enhanced the image.

“Guys you need to watch this video feed of this Raptor in action.” Marion spoke as she brought up an enhanced feed. “Note these Marines in the back.”

“The hell,” Ian murmured. “These Colonials must have made breakthroughs in magnetism for them to even be swaying like that and must be reinforcing their skeletons to survive these 30g maneuvers. This is all theoretical technology we are researching along with the power armor we have been seeing.”

“Or they developed inertial compensators and artificial gravity.” Ursula spoke up while calmly pouring more tea.

“Ursula, we both have physics degrees,” Shandra answered, “You can’t generate useful natural gravity without large amounts of mass. It’s why we are researching electromagnetism, a far more powerful force, to get around it. And inertial compensators? Please, in this building we follow Newton’s laws except when discussing jump drives and KF-theory.”

Ursula calmly set her tea down, stood up, and addressed the room. “If you need my legally required contribution of troops, call me. But that is all you are getting out of me. If you’re foolish enough not to see what is in front of you, on your own heads be it. I am not risking the destruction of the Capellan Confederation with total war.” She then walked out.

Marion waited till she was gone, then spoke, “Let her go, I am not so foolish as to not realize that a Periphery power that can causally give out nine battleship tonnage ships to another is a problem. My navy can spare all 12 of our Atreus Battleships, and we can escort them with the 14 Black Lions you sold us. I can’t spare more than that without first completing our planned destroyer batches. Then I can release my Dart-class Cruisers.”

“Acceptable Marion, we can help with the production of your next batch of destroyers,” Ian spoke as he turned to the others. “These Colonials have substantial resources as we can see and must be a highly militarized society totally dedicated to war production. We must increase our ship production substantially. Shandra, what is the status of the Texas Project?”

“The concept drawings are done, we are just waiting on the new weapons to finish their design tests…”

“Skip it, we will go with tried and true weapons, and refit them later as the newer weapons are available. That gives us a 1,200m replacement for the Monsoons, likewise let’s go ahead with the planned refit of the Aegis-class and put 40 more on order.”

“That’s reasonable Ian, and my yards are already building more carriers. If you provide the big guns, my carriers can bring overwhelming ASF support. We will own the skies.” The First Prince spoke as he laid out the AFFS current build schedule.

“Should we consider rescinding the Ares Convention as well.” Viola spoke up.

Shandra tried to stop Ian from impetuously saying yes, but he shrugged her hand off, “Yes, we all agreed?”

“I’m for it,” Davion agreed.

“Though this is a threat we need to bring to heel rapidly, and the Taurians never signed the convention, we should avoid nuking worlds.” Marion protested.

“War is cruelty and the crueler it is, the faster its done, I agree, the Draconis Combine is all in.” Kurita spoke.

“Then the convention is revoked and we should begin sending the Periphery a warning, the Taurians especially that they should disarm and be occupied.” Viola spoke.

“I’ll draft that warning myself,” Ian spoke. “The Rim Worlds will join immediately, House Amaris has a weak hold on its populace and as long as we guarantee that house its power and prestige, they will deliver the goods. The Outworlds are a loose confederation and should be run over first with utter brutality. Then we hit the Magistracy and the Taurians.”

 Anaheim: September 11th, 2574

Space Master Amber Archibald shook off the effects of the jump aboard the Concordat-class Frigate, Uriah’s Honor. Taking a sip from her hot cup of tea, a luxury she now enjoyed thanks to the Colonials 125 day long refit. She still had the grav deck, no longer spinning and the machinery removed to give 10,000 tons more cargo space. The ammo for the ordinance weapons was much more powerful. She had 4 compact Colonial Fusion Plants that provided 20 times more power than before. The new armor plating took lasers out of the equation and reduced the effectiveness of PPCs, but KEWs of sufficient weight could still punch through. Overall, her ship was now 60 times more effective. Especially with the replacement of the Broadside and Aft facing NACs with Colonial dual-barrel 508mm gun turrets. The replacement of the NL 45s with said turrets gave additional flexibility. Lastly she could now fire specialized rounds from the NACs.

“Jump completed Ma’am, all systems green. DROSTs 1 to 4 reporting in and Tigresses 1 to 8 have pinged us.” Her XO, David Ferris announced from his chair while he nursed his coffee cup. The rest of the crew had their preferred beverages out as well, something nigh unthinkable before their refit.

Amber still enforced no smoking rules as she hated the habit.

“Excellent, exchanging those drop collars for Killer Whale Launchers is looking better even more and our freed up landing bay is great. Set Formation Delta.” Amber announced as she relaxed in her chair, which she was not giving up, ****** the Colonials if they wanted to stand all day. What were they? Sadomasochists when rounds began impacting the hull?

“Comms announce Formation Delta.” David ordered.

As the Task Force began its formation forming, Amber began writing into her log book the successful jump. She would hold back her 24 Lightings of Goliath Division and her 8 Raptors of 405th Raptor Wing aboard her ship and the other 24 Lightings of Bruno Division and their supporting 8 Raptors of the 103rd Raptor Wing split amongst the DROSTs, till they got closer to her patrol area.

“Okay, helm, prepare to move us towards the asteroids at 3g and copy the DROSTs and Tigresses.”

There were a few moments of work to arrange it, and then David looked up and announced, “Ready.”

“3,2,1, hit it!” Amber ordered.

There was a loud thrum as engines vibrated sound through the hull, but there was no sudden pull against her chair. Amber then stood up and walked forward to the helm station and confirmed they were at 3g acceleration.

“XO, send word to the others to maintain current acceleration till we reach the asteroid field then cut down to .5g.” Amber ordered as she returned to her seat.

“Yes Ma’am. At current speed, we’ll be there in 18 hours.” David reported.

“Notify Goliath Division to prepare to deploy in 18 hours with four Raptors in support, I will be in my day cabin. You have the Conn XO.” Amber instructed as she got up.

“Aye Ma’am, I have the Conn.”

Walking out to a side door, Amber entered a small room with just a cot, sink, toilet, and desk with a secured communications system. Additional monitors provided her vital ship information. Going to her cot, she plopped down to take an 8 hour nap.

………………..

The alarms awoke Amber and looking up she saw contacts on the Radar Screen and rushed out.

“Fighters prepare to launch.” David was announcing as Amber entered the Bridge.

“Report.” Amber spoke as she took back her chair.

“8 Leopard CVs closing fast and launching Stukas. Current closing speed will have us in effective weapons range in 1 hour.” David announced.

“This doesn’t make any sense, this is a clear suicide run… Unless they are screening a warship.” Amber mused. “Launch our fighters. Tigresses and DROSTs are to maintain current speed and link targeting data to our main fire control. Load flak shells into the forward NACs and get me a targeting solution on those Stukas. Execute.”

After a few moments, David looked up, “Firing solution ready.”

Amber set her face to serene calm, “Fire.”

……………………..

Commodore McAllister Swinton of the AFFS didn’t know what to expect as Uriah’s Honor fired its 6 forward facing NAC’s outside effective range. But his 48 Stukas being reduced to half via flak bursts wasn’t it. It was too late to abort the attack, inertia was in full swing. “All craft, press the attack, we’re committed.” He ordered while tightening his straps on his chair. “Leopards arm the LRMs, they are committed as well, target the Concordat…”

McAllister’s jaw dropped as the Concordat gave inertia the finger and executed a hard right turn with its escorting DROSTs in just 2 seconds, a 15g turn that by rights should have snapped their spines. And revealed not 3 NACs according to intelligence, but 3 dual-turreted ACs? No, too big…

…………………..

“Broadsides ready,” David called out.

“Clear them from my sky,” Amber ordered.

……………………….

180 LRMs, from 12 launchers, 12 508mm rounds every 6 seconds, plus 6 medium lasers, and 12 large lasers, not counting the supporting fire of the DROSTs, Tigresses, Lightings, and Raptors, made short work of the remaining Stukas whose own return fire was ineffective due to Colonial Grade ECM/ECCM packages the Taurians received.

For Commodore McAllister his last thought, as a 508mm APHE shell slammed through his Dropship, was he wouldn’t be home for his daughter’s high school graduation.

……………………..

“Targets destroyed, should we resume the mission?” XO David asked.

“Not yet, have a Raptor take a priority message back to…”

“Jump signature matching a fast courier,” Section Leader Kallis spoke from his station, cutting off Amber’s order. “Jump has completed, receiving a broad spectrum message. Its unfiltered and unencrypted.”

“Show me it,” Amber ordered.

Upon receiving it, Amber only needed 5 minutes to read it. “Scratch the Raptor, copy this message to a Tigress and send it immediately to Taurus.”

……………………………………..

September 12th, 2574, Office of the Lord Protector

Ambassador Hebe of the 12 Colonies of Kobol read out loud the message, “Furthermore, in consideration of the common goals we share, we must set aside our differences and pool our resources for the common good, once and for all.

The Star League stands for a unified Humanity. As First Lord of the Star League, it is my solemn responsibility to protect the welfare of that Humanity wherever it may be found, be it on Sian or Santiago, New Vandenberg or New Avalon, Andurien or Apollo, Castor or Canopus or the 12 Colonies of Kobol. Though me, the Star League assumes the awesome task of safeguarding the welfare of Humanity. It is a responsibility from which the League will never shrink, a responsibility it shall never lay down. The dark days of barbarism are over-we will not let them return again.

The only way to ensure equal protection for all, the only way to safeguard the liberties of each individual, is for every Human being to accept the benefits we offer, freely and openly. So long as a solitary individual of the most distant planet in the Periphery remains uneducated, impoverished, or disadvantaged, all are equally stricken.

We intend to see that the majority is not denied the benefits of culture and progress at the hands of a minority of radical isolationists. We intend to extend our benevolent protection into every corner of Human-occupied space, whatever the cost, until every man, woman, and child prospers and flourishes. Let no one stand in the way of Human progress. The time for reunification has come.

Signed Ian Cameron, First Lord of the Star League.”

“It’s essentially a declaration of war,” Mitchell pointed out.

“I agree, but I will have to send a report back to President Adar and await instructions. You must understand, our people still fear the Cylons might return and don’t want our defenses weakened. However, I believe he will guarantee your independence and if they dare to use WMDs on civilians. Rest assured, they will quickly learn it’s not a smart ideal.” Hebe replied.

“Thank you, I will be deploying more forces to Anaheim soon to flush out whatever ship is hiding in the belts. I doubt it’s a Warship, though they likely got them on standby. But I’m not going to play that game. I trust your meeting with the Canopian Envoy went well?”

“Certainly Mitchell, the Canopians agreed to our terms and we will be delivering 3 Atlas-class Heavy Carriers, our sole remaining Minerva-class Battlestar, and nine Janus-class Heavy Cruisers to them, plus the license to build the Artemis-class Battlestar and the previously mentioned ships. Vice Admiral Cain will oversee their transfer.”

AN: https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/galacticafanon/images/2/24/Athena_Internal.png/revision/latest?cb=20111003044922

What the Titan Project will look like. The Taurian Navy will continue to use DEWs for a while longer. Meanwhile the Inner Sphere after the initial engagements will be dumping them and working on the next step up for NACs, which is basically Halo type MACs. They will also be surgically reinforcing pilot's bodies and looking to grow clones specifically to become fighter pilots who can handle 30g maneuvers without dying. They also will be attempting to put out Battle Armor Troops. This all stuff they have the theoretical framework to do, if not necessarily the technical capability to do outside of labs.

Hunting Party

Anaheim System, September 14, 2574

Space Master Amber oversaw the launch of Goliath Division and 405th Raptor Wing as 20 Raptors jumped in.

“Receiving Confirmation Codes from Captain Karl Agathon of the Colonial Fleet. Callsign is Helo,” Ensign Callis spoke from the communications section.

“Ah perfect, patch me to him.” Amber spoke as David entered the bridge.

“Ready ma’am.”

“This is Space Master Amber Archibald to Helo, thank you for joining this hunt, has Galactica made it into place?”

“It is a pleasure Uriah Actual, Galactica is in position with plenty of friends ready and waiting. Helo out.”

“Start the clock, David you have the Conn, I am going to my main quarters to shower and eat, and will be back in two hours for the next portion of the hunt.”

“I have the Conn.” David announced as he took her chair.

Walking out of the bridge, Amber began a jog to her quarters. A hot shower and a pizza were things she could not have had in zero g. The civilian fleet was screaming for the upgrades, but military and chartered Merchant Marine ships were first for upgrading. Amber smiled; her son in the Taurian Army had sent a letter on the last mail shuttle, another luxury made possible by colonial FTL drives, in which he praised the new drop chutes provided by the Colonials. It was now possible for modified DROSTs to jump into an atmosphere and drop two Lances of 50 ton Talos from 1,000 meters or a Mech Lance and 4 platoons of Jump Troopers. The new strategic and tactical playbook the Colonials had given them was going to drive the Innies up against the wall. Already the TDF Staff Officers were working overtime trying out new combinations of units and tactics.

Then the Battle Stations alarm rang. “Damnit! I’m going to kill whoever is preventing me from getting a shower and pizza!”

…………………….

“Uriah’s Honor, Helo here, holding with you in guard position.” Helo spoke as several unfriendly warships formed up 350,000,000 kilometers away, just outside the gravity influence of the local gas giant.

“Helo, Uriah’s Honor here, confirming 6 Farragut-class Battleships, 6 Defender-class Cruisers, 6 New Syrtis-class Carriers, 10 Aegis-class Heavy Cruisers, and 15 Davion II-class Destroyers. 118 Dropships deploying along with 324 Small Craft, no fighter launches yet, but expect over 2,000 fighters.”

“Acknowledged, 18 hours till the trap is sprung.”

………………..

Marshal Santos formed up the Taurian Component of the Joint Fleet in the storm layer of the atmosphere of the Gas Giant Kalus. 3 Jupiter-class Battlestars, 6 Minotaur-class Gunships, 7 Dart-class Cruisers, 12 Concordat-class Frigates, 52 DROST IIbs, and 245 Tigresses. The Colonial Fleet under Rear Admiral Michaelson, composed Galactica and 4 Heracles-class Battlecruisers backed by 16 Hesperus-class Frigates. Nuclear Ordinance had been authorized. “Send to all ships, T-minus 2 minutes.”

“Yes sir,” Karen, his Adjutant answered as she began sending the order out while the ship shook from another lighting strike.

Adjusting the map table to reflect the new tactical situation, as the Mobile Shipyard, Forge of Victory, jumped into place in a more calm part of the storm. Here it could serve as a forward base, immune to Innie Retaliation. “Overall, they are playing this smart and smooth. They have overwhelming force in good order and arranged to mutually cover each other.” Santos spoke to Commodore Markand.

“Before our upgrades, I wouldn’t have dared to make this attack, I would have refused battle and waited for them to split up and attack them in detail.” Markand agreed as he lit another cigar while the ship shook again from another lighting hit as the count reached 1 minute.

“Launch Fighters.” Santos ordered.

“All fighters, clear to launch, may your gods be with you.” Karen announced as the PA announcement came on.

………………………………….

General Shandra Noruff Cameron adjusted her straps on her chair aboard Righteous Justice. Ian had strenuously objected to her taking personal command of this reconnaissance-in-force mission, but this amount of combat power massing together demanded her personal presence or that of their son. Ian only relented when she threatened to resign her commission and retire as a housewife. Ian bought her bluff.

“I don’t understand this Space Master Amber, she is holding position, not running or surrendering. She must know we can annihilate her in an instant once we reach effective weapons range in 10 minutes.” Shandra mused as they moved past the Gas Giant Kalus as the Aegis Squadrons launched 180 fighters to provide the first CAP.

“Ma’am detecting massive engine wakes behind us… They are coming from the atmosphere of Kalus at its equator!” Captain Verner announced from his chair in shocked disbelief.

“What! No warship can enter an atmosphere of a terrestrial planet, much less a gas giant, and sustain the thrust to escape it!” Shandra shouted as she brought up the sensor readings to her own screen.

“Taurian and Colonial IFFs, reading 10 Battleships, 4 Battlecruisers, 7 Cruisers, 28 Frigates, and multiple escor… Radiation alarms, they are arming nuclear ordinance, but holding stable orbit over the gas giant.”

“Launch all fighters, hard maneuvers, and use that moon to sling shot us back around to take them head on.” Shandra ordered as she mentally and physically braced for a punishing high g maneuver. As the order was carried out, she started to wonder why did they hold against the gravity well as they made the slingshot. Nothing made sense here…

“Jump signatures, they are jumping behind us!” Verner shouted.

Shandra’s face paled. They were committed. Inertia was in full swing. She could not brake in time to turn about and would have to slingshot around the gas giant. But if they could jump like that, they would control the engagement regardless of what she tried.

“We’re being painted and the Vigilant reports multiple dropships, small craft, and fighters with hot nukes have jumped in on the other side of the gas giant. Incoming transmission.” Verner spoke resignedly.

“Patch it through and prep for hard retrograde braking off the atmosphere of Kalus.” Shandra ordered as the Vigilant’s report put paid to her final maneuvering options. She would have to brake by bouncing off Kalus’ atmosphere, but that would leave them unable to maneuver from a stable orbit point for several critical minutes. She either could die with glory or surrender.

“This is Marshal Santos of the Taurian Concordat. I think you might have gotten lost, I truly hope you simply got lost. Because this is quite embarrassing to you. Trapped. Against a Gas Giant’s Gravity Well.” Santos spoke, empathizing Shandra’s predicament.

“I will admit, you got me there Marshal Santos. I’ll never live this down and just got permanently grounded when I get back home.” Shandra replied.

“Well, now it’s even more amusing General Shandra Noruff Cameron. Tell me, do you think you have a chance now against us? In the interest of peace and because our Colonial Allies who recently fought a brutal robot rebellion are uneasy about spilling Human blood unnecessarily, we will let you take your warships home after you dump your ordinance. You have an hour to think it through. Santos out.”

Carthage System, September 14, 2574

Subaltern Alexis Archibald shook off the transition from a jump and was buffeted in his Talos as his DROST carrier was buffeted by wind turbulence of a storm front for a minute.

“Jump Clock starting, doors opening, no abort code sent.” Air Master Zayla announced as a 30 second timer started.

“I’m green, ready to drop,” Alexis responded as he took his weapons safeties off, hoping the Pathfinders who inserted ahead of them via Raptor hadn’t ****** up. Otherwise his drop lance of 4 Talos and 4 Platoons of Jump Infantry would be falling to their deaths against these pirate scum.

The countdown hit zero and then there was a feeling of free fall as his 50 ton Mech began falling to the Earth for a few seconds before the jettisonable grav chute activated and righted his Mech as it began its controlled descent 800 meters down and 1,200 meters forward in 30 seconds. This also meant he could engage targets during this descent with a stable firing platform.

“Targets painted, light them up.” Alexis ordered as he opened up with his Delta Dart LRMs at defensive emplacements and his larger Delta Bolt SRMs with fragmentation warheads at the scrambling defenders in the open in synchrony with his Lance. The Pathfinders lased them in true.

Then their crunch as his Mech’s feet hit the ground and he jettisoned the grav chute and swept for targets as the Jump Infantry deployed around his Lance as they moved to secure this airbase. “TDF! Lay down your arms!” Alexis called out.

Machine gun fire burst from a building and knocked down three of the jump troopers.

“Fine, have it your way!” Alexis raged as he returned fire with his three supporting Mechs and reduced the building to rubble.

“Three WIA, none critical.” Force Sergeant Kalis spoke.

“Sweep the other, ah, they see sense now.” Alexis spoke as several people came out with hands up. Not all looked to be pirates, he saw clear non-combatants with children amongst the uniformed pirates who all wore red uniforms inspired by the Ancient Red Coats of the British Empire.

“Drop Leader, Pathfinder 1 here, should we send the code burst now,” Asked the Section Leader commanding the Pathfinders.

“Affirmative. Cornet Valerie, take your group and secure the main crossroad, Cornet Mark, move your group to cover her, and Cornet Erik’s group, you got the bridge. My group police this place till we’re relieved.” Alexis ordered. Now the next step was in motion.

Eight Raptors jumped in for the rapid insertion of flight specialists to run the airbase and exfiltrate the Pathfinders and wounded. They were escorted by 24 Lightings, and followed by 4 DROSTs carrying three motorized battalions and a support and command battalion of the 309th Motorized Regiment.

“Drop Leader, Grizzly Leader here, was the hunting good?” The Regimental Commander called.

“Certainly Grizzly Leader, you should consider joining us Drop Units.” Alexis radioed back.

“Ah, I’m too old to be dropped, fragile too. You youngsters can have all the fun, Grizzly Leader out.”

Within 9 minutes the Motorized Regiment was deployed and moving to secure the area further. There had yet to be any counter-moves. These Pirates were known to have 4 Commando Mechs and 1 Manatee, 4 Jumbos, plus three Jumpships with 30 ASFs. There was one Manatee present with the four Commandos loaded, and they destroyed the 30 ASFs on the drop, and the four Jumbos were secure. So where were the rest of the Pirates? If they faded into the four civilian settlements with 10 klicks from here and the locals didn’t turn them in, it would be difficult to bring them to justice. The Jumpships should be getting seized now by the Tigresses.

Overall, the Jump Drop Insertion tactic had been validated in a combat test. Now it was a matter of scaling it up. He had no doubts that the more professional Innie Forces would more vigorously counter such tactics. But a successful and rapidly developed airhead would greatly lower losses and allow seizure of critical logistical nodes and strategic targets before an enemy could organize effective resistance.

AN: I'm purposely leaving you with an evil cliff hanger.  :smirk:

As it is, Shandra did everything right given the limitations her technology gives her. Unfortunately Colonial Technology makes it irrelevant. Either way, Ian is going to hit the roof.

Humiliation

October 20th, 2574, Terra

General Shandra Noruff Cameron departed the Fast Courier at the Luna Pirate Point, 4 Sparrowhawks escorting her shuttle. Her career was over, as the commanding officer, she had full responsibility. Had the hunt succeeded, she would have gotten all the praise, and had it failed as it did. She got all the blame. Ian would keep her from forced retirement, but she would never hold a command posting again.

After touching down, Shandra left the shuttle and found Ian coming up to her.

“Shandra, you okay?” Ian asked with concern.

“I’m fine, but I will never live down the humiliation I led the fleet into.”

“You will get a chance for revenge, Shandra.”

“Ian, we both know the board will…”

“I am the Director General and First Lord, they will do what I tell them, and what happened at Kalus was beyond your control. In fact, your quick thinking resulted in vital intelligence coming our way.”

“Ian we got defeated without firing a shot.”

“And learned the Colonials can cancel out gravity and are reluctant to go nuclear.”

“Ian, our radiological readings show they armed nuclear shells and missiles. Their 15-ton fighters were carrying 2 megaton warheads on missiles strapped to their wings. The Battleships were packing warheads with yields in the teratons, enough total yields to blow off this planet’s atmosphere...” Shandra clutched her chest and blinked.

“Shandra, are you…,” Ian grasped Shandra before she could fall to the ground, “Alert the chopper, get us ready for immediate dust off! And help me!” Ian ordered his honor guard.

Amber Archibald admired her new Commodore pins. She now commanded Frigate Demi-Squadron 9.  Her command composed of 6 Concordat-class Light Frigates and one of the recently arrived Adamant-class Heavy Frigates provided by the Colonials, backed up by 24 DROST IIn-class Escort Carriers and 48 DROST IIn-class Gunships.

With Colonial Jump Drives, all dropships were being reclassified, based on their chassis and role. The DROST II-class thus had an appellation of (a) if assigned to the army, (c) for the constabulary, and (n) for the navy. This was then followed by their role. Escort Carrier was self-evident with 6 Lightings and 2 Raptors or a different combination thereof. Gunship variant dispensed with the small craft bays for a docking port, and mounted 14 AC-10s that were well fed from the cargo bays. Other variants were being constructed such as a missile boat, laser boat, PPC boat, and some with spinal mounted colonial capital weapons. The Wagon Wheels were being retired post haste and scrapped thanks to the 20 Adamant-class Frigates the Colonials provided and 60 more were planned to be built as Frigate Demi Squadron Flagships.

But that was all for later, for now, she found herself in the War Room of the Pride of Ishtar with Commodore Erik Salas of 1st Frigate Demi Squadron, Commodore Markus Grange of 3rd Battleship Demi Squadron, and Marshal Gisela Cardenas who had transferred her flag to this ship to form 1st Fleet. Lord Protector Mitchel Calderon was chairing the meeting and Marshal Lucina Grim, the newly appointed Chief of Staff for the TDF was next to him.

“Alright, we all have had our tea and pleasantries, it’s time for work.” Lord Calderon spoke as he brought up a 3D map. “Case AMBER will be our counter-attack to punish the AFFS for violating our borders and knock the Star League back on its heels. Marshal Cardenas will lead this attack with your Demi Squadrons while the rest of the fleet holds here while we begin the process of building sixteen more Jupiter-class Battlestars to form the core flagships of our Naval Fleets. Marshal Cardenas, you have the floor.”

Lord Calderon stepped to the side and Marshal Cardenas stepped forward and brought up New Syrtis. “This is our first target. Pathfinders report the System to be currently defended by 4 Defenders, 59 Leopard CVs, 207 Small Combat Craft, and 3,600 ASFs. 39 Defense Stations guard critical entry points which we can bypass thanks to the Colonials. There are 167 defense emplacements on various moons and asteroids with which to channel attackers to kill zones, which again we can bypass or neutralize easily.” Marshal Cardenas paused to drink some tea before continuing. “Thus our objective to destroy this system’s ability to supply war material and make it clear we will not be passive in the face of Star League aggression. Nuclear weapons on military targets are authorized and our opening assault will see all the defensive stations and installations destroyed via our now obsolete Jumpships simply jumping inside them as they are fixed in place and don’t move outside of a predictable route. 9 of our new Drop Mech Regiments will join the assault and ensure the destruction of war factories, air fields, and major military stations on New Syrtis itself. Commodore Grange, you have the floor.”

“My group is tasked with the destruction of the Defenders and defense installations. Nothing fancy about it, we locate their positions and destroy them before providing heavy guns where needed. Commodore Archibald, you have the Floor.” Commodore Grange stepped to the side.

Amber stepped up and brought up the Shipyard Complex orbiting the Gas Giant Circe. “I will be directly attacking the shipyards by jumping to this point. This will ensure that if the Raptor Missions are a bust, I am protected from the defense emplacements by the bulk of the complex itself and can tear the place apart at my leisure. Preceding my attack will be my entire ASF complement of 112 Raptors and 336 Lightings who will jump ahead and soften up the complex before I jump in, supporting them will be 120 Tigresses. The complex has 27 Leopard CVs with 162 ASFs, 245 ASFs in defensive hangars, and 89 Small Combat Craft. The Ice Ship Yard will be spared per the ROE as we want to destroy AFFS capability to wage war, not give water to its civilians. However, Yards 1, 4, and 7 will be nuked, as well as the central Germanium Processing Facility, Hydrogen Plant, and Helium Plant. Civilian Station Carbex will be boarded by Marines and the mainframe copied and its transmitter shut down while civilians are offloaded prior to the station being blown. After this is completed, and no contingencies are activated, I will jump out to the Rendezvous. Commodore Salas, you have the floor.”

Commodore Salas brought up New Syrtis itself. “My mission is to support the ground troops. To demonstrate their impotence, we will jump into low orbit and support the ground efforts. In addition we will destroy hardened sites. Overall, we are looking at a 48 hour mission before we extricate our troops and jump out. Marshal Grim, I yield to you.”

Marshal Grim took the floor and changed the screen to show drop objectives. “Pathfinders are already in position, T-minus 48 hours if the abort code is not sent. The joint SLDF Fleet is currently holding at Enchi. We do not assess them as capable of responding in time. But if they do, Royal and 2nd Fleet will be on standby to jump in and give battle. The Colonials are not participating as this is an offensive act and they are not yet authorized by their government to take the war to the Star League. So this falls to us. Lord Protector.”

Lord Calderon stepped forth. “You all know your parts. Brief your subordinates and god speed.”

Meanwhile: Echi

Admiral Howard sat in his command chair while observing the new training regimen to try and counter jump fighters capable of 30g+ maneuvers. The biggest problem was inertia. Colonial Fighters and now Taurian Fighters could give it the finger. Their capital vessels and escorts as well. Finally, any fights would see nukes flying. Because of that, they had to create a new formation with capital ships spaced 30km away from each other with each ship angled to back scratch the other. It also meant current SLDF doctrine of passing point defense on to escorts was now a fatal weakness that needed to be fixed ASAP.

Picking up a drinking bulb, Admiral Howard took a sip of Fruit Punch Gatorade and longed for a cigar which was not safe to light up aboard ship.

“Admiral, high priority message from Tracker Marlow which just jumped in, message reads: Came across a Colonial Viper Jump Fighter. Pilot suffered apparent heart attack. Barely jumped ahead of a Colonial SAR Mission.”

Admiral Howard stood, well tried, being stopped by the chair harness, before recollecting himself. “Inform Marlow to transfer the fighter to the Empyrion’s Folly and inform its Captain to prepare to jump from Carlow’s Pirate Point in six hours. Get a shuttle ready for me as well. I want to look over the fighter before it gets moving towards Terra.” Admiral Howard ordered as he unstrapped himself.

“Yes sir,” The communications technician replied.

Admiral Howard flew out of his Flag Bridge and went towards the small craft bays. Within an hour he was docking with the Marlow and was greeted personally by Captain Kawls.

“Welcome aboard Admiral, we got it in bay 1 aboard the Ares for transferring it. We put the male pilot in a body bag and on ice. So far we can tell it has three 30mm guns, one internal bay opening under the engines, and 2 hardpoints for mounting external war loads on the wings. Documents on the pilot had to be run through a computer, and as far as we can tell, they are using a long extinct Minoan Linear A language which we can only translate 10% of. DNA test is being re-ran to rule out any errors in the equipment.”

“What’s wrong with the DNA results?” Admiral Howard asked.

“Doctor Dalia says the results, if accepted at face value, means his human ancestors independently evolved on another planet, not Earth, which can’t be right. Other than that, the pilot was 45 years of age, and cause of death was a heart attack. He was wearing a pressure suit, but not a g-suit, nor did he have any unusual surgeries or body augmentation. Also there was this personal computerized type photo we found. Give it a tap in the center.”

“I see,” Admiral Howard spoke as he looked at the photo, Captain Kawls handed to him. It showed a heavily armed man in BDUs putting his foot down on a chrome armored person(?) in a field filled with them against a backdrop of a ruined city. A woman held a small child in her arms next to the man and was smiling. He gave it a tap and watched a short five minute video which revealed the chrome soldiers to be machines and the man and his female companion to be touring a battlefield with other soldiers and celebrating. Context was lost on him, but a few words kept propping up. Canceron and Cylons.

“Have this copied and placed back in the pilot’s personnel effects. Now show me this fighter.” Admiral Howard ordered as he handed the item back.

 “Right this way sir.”

Once in the Ares’ cargo bay, Admiral Howard did a standard pre-flight check routine on it. If he had to describe it, the Colonial Fighter was an ultralight fighter the size of a WW2 F4F-3 and massed 17 to 21 tons depending on war load. As a pilot himself, and owning a working copy of an F4F-3 back on his Homeworld of Wyatt, he couldn’t help but admire its design and what tactical realities led to this type of design. Just as there were reasons they did not build pure space fighter designs like the Starfury in the old scifi franchise Babylon 5, there was a reason this light fighter was a go to design for the Colonials. Not to say the Colonials had no heavy fighters, they just hadn’t seen them, and the Raptors was more an ultralight Small Craft than a fighter and less likely to be captured intact.

Hopping in the cockpit which was placed center of gravity for the fighter, Admiral Howard saw nothing out of the ordinary aside from the different alphabet used. He intuitively could tell the controls apart, and had no doubt that if need be, he could fly this thing for basic check flights.

“Excellent work for you and your crew Captain. Get this transferred and get yourself and your crew liberty while your engines recharge, you all earned it. This coup will go a long way to hopefully countering the Colonials.”

AN: While recovering the Viper and its pilot will be an intelligence trove, reverse engineering it is out of the question, they just don't have enough to go on. They first have to decode the flight manual, which is written in primarily Linear A. Given Linear A is mostly untranslatable, despite years of work piecing together Egyptian Documents containing both writings, they have a lot of filler to figure out. Headcanon for this story is the Colonials last intermixed with Earth during the Minoan Period during the Lords of Kobol's seeding operations with that Colony basically being wiped out by the Santorini Eruption and Bronze Age Collapse before the Lords abandoned Earth, bringing some isolated samples back to Kobol who didn't interbreed back into Kobol Humanity. During this time, they were fighting an advanced entity which wound up wrecking Kobol and causing the Kobolian Humans to leave for Cyrannus which Deadlock implies was already settled by Kobolian Humans and underwent a devastating religious war that knocked them out for 400 years.

But back to the fighter, once the manual is decoded, they then can begin carefully taking it apart for analysis. This will be done in the highest of security labs by scientists and engineers with the highest security clearances and not crowd sourced. They can learn many things about it that way, but what they really need is the theoretical blueprints and practical tools to make the theory concrete practical results.

Unless the Colonial ancestors are actually aliens that evolved in parallel with the Earth humans there should still be common ancestors even if it'll be further back.

Unless the Colonial ancestors are actually aliens that evolved in parallel with the Earth humans there should still be common ancestors even if it'll be further back.

They are Aliens for all intents and purposes.

The Colonials themselves are the remnants of a K2.4 Civilization that came into conflict with a K3 Entity of some sort. The Colonials are now a K1.8 Civilization compared to the BTech's K1. But BTech's K1 status is only due to population size and only because they had larger numbers of easily settled worlds due to ancient terraforming by the Kobolians in preparation for a massive expansion coreward that was scragged in the conflict with the K3 Jealous God.

The Colonials were situated on the Rimward Side of things and the fight against the K3 Jealous God was utterly apocalyptic, with stars getting destroyed which wrecked habitable worlds, broke the Kobolians, and sent them into a dark age with much of their history getting lost and becoming myths.
