I've fixed the year 3153 in my copy of the story I'm putting up on the Fanon Wiki.  Its good story so far.

[Author]  Glad people are enjoying it so far.  Now to see about getting back to it.  [/Author]

Daniel kept studying the ring.  He wasn't sure for how long.  To be honest he was kind of surprised that the volunteers that had taken up the exploration of Toreel before their new 'guests' started taking over had turned over the three rings.  Indeed he considered it quite likely a fair few items were lining such pockets or stashed away.

"Rings?" Jenna walked up behind Daniel.

"Yes.  These two seem to have something about them that just holding them gives off some sense of power."  Daniel pointed at the two rings.

"An inscription."  Jenna picked up the iron band.

"Yeah.  One no one can read."  Daniel grumbled.

Jenna slipped the iron ring onto her unoccupied ring finger.  She held up her hands together.

"Looks remarkably similar to the rings Kevin gave us for our ceremony."  Jenna's face scrunched up.

"Why did you put the ring on?"  Daniel knew he asked an incomplete question.

"Rings are meant to be worn."  Jenna answered.

"I meant more of we know some of this stuff is unusual and may not be safe."  Daniel sighed.

"Without proper labs and specialists we're never going to find the answers we seek by playing it safe."  Jenna scowled.

"You have a point."  Daniel was forced to admit.

He picked up the obsidian ring and put it on his free ring finger.

At first he felt nothing.  Then suddenly he felt the need to take off his wedding ring and put the gold ring with the ruby on.

Try not to freak out.  A feminine voice said in his head.

Daniel looked around not certain of what was happening.

"Either I've been working too hard or something really weird is going on here."  Daniel finally muttered.

*sigh*  Do you know how to look at something without actually making it obvious? The feminine voice spoke in his mind again.

"What seems to be the matter?"  Jenna looked at Daniel with a puzzled look on her face.

"Not sure.  Either the ship board communication system is on the fritz or I'm starting to hear voices."  Daniel answered.

"I have heard no such things."  Jenna looked even more concerned.

Okay let's try this again before we get found out.  You're not insane but you are an idiot.  Look towards the top north eastern corner of the room.  Do it casually.  The feminine voice was obviously losing patience.

Daniel grabbed a mirror and used it to act like he was straightening out his hair while looking in the indicated direction with it.

He could barely make it out.  A small translucent orb.

Good job.  You finally noticed it.  Now try and act like it isn't there. Daniel could actually feel the sarcasm.

Daniel rubbed his chin.

Jenna looked at Daniel with a confused expression.

Now what do we do about it?"  Daniel thought to himself.

There any place around here with lead walls?  The feminine voice intruded into Daniel's mind again.

"Jenna why don't you keep working with that ring.  I'm going to go down to engineering to see about borrowing something."  Daniel gathered himself.

Daniel made the short walk in silence.

A service room near the power core was the best bet.

He entered the small space.

Okay seems like this place will do the trick.  I used to be the master conjurer Melinda.  Long story short I'm in the gem of the gold ring and the obsidian ring is the companion piece.  I was starting to wonder what it would take to get someone to put both on at the same time.  The feminine voice seemed much happier now.

"I am really starting to hate this place.  So what was that orb?"  Daniel rubbed his temples.

A sensory orb.  It means someone has been spying on you remotely.  Since time is limited before they get suspicious finding someplace lined with lead works wonders.  That I'm able to talk with you means you've got the makings to be a wizard.  I can't shortcut you like some of the really powerful wizards claim to be able to do and being trapped in this gem puts hard limits on what I can really do.  Daniel could feel Melinda have the beginnings of a smile.

"Yeah you're going in a box."  Daniel decided Melinda was more trouble than she was really worth.

Please no.  I'm sorry about before.  It's just been so long since I've had a body or someone to talk to. Melinda's emotions were a mix of anxiety and regret.

"So what?  You going to teach me?  How will that work when you're just a voice in my head?"  Daniel scoffed.

I can.  True it will be harder since I am just a voice in your head as you put it.  Though speaking of that it might be possible to find someone who can fix that.  Melinda seemed cautious.

"Yup.  I'm officially insane.  I have a Clanner wife.  A voice in my head that claims to come from a ring I'm wearing.  Oh and a land lord that seems on the verge of planetary domination but seems to want to leave."  Daniel muttered to himself.

Wait...  Would that land lord be Kevin Wellman?  He's the reason I'm in this gem!  Keep me away from him and his Succubus wife!  Melinda's terror was nearly overpowering.

"Damn.  He must have really done a number on you."  Daniel shook his head.

The presence in his mind was much reduced now.

"Better."  Daniel walked back to the impromptu lab.

He set the rings in a box and labled it 'UNSAFE'.

"Find what you need?"  Jenna looked up from her notebook.

"No but think I made some progress.  You?"  Daniel shook his head.

"I never learned more than Star League English so what this ring says eludes me."  Jenna answered.

And now Selene is going to wonder how Daniel knew that those rings are unsafe.  If Selene describes those rings to Kevin, then Kevin might remember imprisoning Melinda and realize he needs to get those two rings back.

[Author]  Log collection and upload then an overnight test that I don't have to monitor?  Sounds like a recipe for me to get some writing done!  [/Author]

Meanwhile at Wellman Castle...

Kevin was deep in thought.  He wasn't sure what to make of what he had just watched yet.

"Hate to say it honey but I think at least Daniel has figured out we're spying on him."  Selena purred next to him.

"Seems likely.  I think he had help though.  But how I'm not sure yet."  Kevin's forehead scrunched up even more.

"Well we had our usual array of perception enhancers up and didn't see or hear anyone."  Selena seemed less concerned.

"So had to be some form of telepathy but who..."  The mystery was really getting to him now.

"How big would you say that ruby in the other ring was?"  Selena sat up.

"Almost too big for a ring."  Kevin answered.

"Shit.  Someone is soul gemmed in that ring then."  Selena remarked.

"Right.  Been here nearly fifty years and I still haven't fully grasped everything possible here yet.  Now who is in there...."  The frustration was almost too much now.

"Almost too many possibilities."  Selena murmered.

"A caster, a powerful one.  One that didn't get away."  Kevin grumbled.

"So not the Glasscannon or the Silverfall sisters."  Selena was now deep in thought as well.

"Where did I see that other ring before..."  Kevin grumbled.

"Oh I think I remember!  It was just after Heinrich woke up."  Selena perked up.

"Yes.  The one that was obsessed with spiders...  What was her name now..."  The name was on the tip of his tongue.

"Melisa?  Meridith?  Mel something..."  Selena rambled.

"Melinda.  That's it!  Yes.  I had Heinrich do to her what most people do to spiders.  Step on her.  Violently and repeatedly.  Was oddly satisfying."  The memory made Kevin smile.

"She could be a problem.  Should I go get her?"  Selena coiled around her husband.

"No need.  Seems Daniel has decided she is more trouble than she is worth and handled it nicely for us."  Kevin watched Daniel put the rings in a box and label it UNSAFE.

"Oh that's almost too good."  Selena chuckled.

"Let's see what their recon teams are getting up to."  Kevin adjusted the orb and the projection updated.

The image showed a trueborn Elemental grappling with an Orc.

"This should be good."  Kevin smiled.

[Author]  Now for some other fun again.  [/Author]

Meanwhile near the Fireplains

Gwain grappled with the creature.  It was savage and strong.  Big too.  Nearly as much as he was on all counts.  His edge though was he was clearly tougher than this creature.  It was not as able to withstand his blows while it's own attacks against him certainly still hurt and leaving wounds but being a trueborn Elemental also meant he could shrug off such blows more easily.

Driving his knee into the creature's rib cage repeatedly with as much force as he could muster was enough to finally end the battle between them.

"Come let us return to Stalingrad.  While victory was ours this day it has not been kind to us."  Gwain looked at his ragged warriors.

The creatures had come at them in great number, enough that even with the recon team's modern weapons that enough survived to get into melee.  No one had died but the injuries suffered were not trivial among some of the members of the recon team.

A Small Craft ride back to Stalingrad later

"These creatures were intelligent and ruthless.  They knew their primitive weapons and armor were no match for us in open battle and came at us anyway.  It was clearly planned.  If it were not for the number of trueborn Elementals in my recon team I do not think we would have carried the day."  Gwain laid back on the medical bed while his wounds were being treated.

"It seems the locals refer to them as Orcs."  Jenna had come to see him as soon as his return was announced.

"This world is both a paradise and a hell for us.  There is battle to be had.  With foes of great ability but victory can only be ours if we forsake our traditions of honorable combat.  That may also come too easy.  These creatures appear human enough but the reality is they are no longer human.  At best they are something akin to the stories told of the genecast."  Gwain grimaced as the medtech sutured closed a cut on his arm.

"It is as if this world is designed to be a lure.  No, not just this world.  The entire nebula.  I have read the reports of Ivan and the Interstellar Expeditions team that came here and came to the conclusion that they were stuck in the Nebula.  The other worlds that are inhabited are all full of wonders that would cause many to salivate at the prospect of claiming and mastering them.  As much as I hold out hope that there is a way out it seems far too clearly a trap for those whose avarice and hubris are too great."  Jenna sighed.

"I tend to concur.  I speculate this was the Terran Hegemony's attempt at showing why the Mother Doctrine was actually a good idea and why some science should not be pursued."  Gwain nodded.

"They knew their experiments would go awry and that they would need to be contained.  So they made it possible to go into the nebula but not possible to leave."  Jenna added.

"But it became forgotten.  There were many points of time where it could have been and many events that would make rediscovering it difficult at best."  Gwain groaned as the medtech reset a dislocated finger.

"We cannot prove any of this with our current lack of scientists and equipment but it seems the most logical conclusion.  It means it is rather unlikely that they left a failsafe or override so that the researchers here could leave."  Jenna looked at the floor in anger and despair.

"Again I tend to concur but the only way to know for sure is to keep looking.  Even with the aid of the shuttles of the unclean there is much of this world left unsearched.  Even if we can never leave it is also our only hope at gaining some measure of redemption."  Gwain tried cheering up Jenna.

Jenna silently nodded and left the room.

U know Kevin/Selena u still might want to get those rings back...  just to be better safe then sorry.

Elementals vrs Orcs...   I think we have the makings of a Bloodbowl game here.

Even better is that since Daniel put them in a box, all Selene has to do is open the box, remove the rings, and close the box.  Daniel would never know until he later looked in the box.

It does predate the Exodus by a fair margin and wasn't exactly a secret.  Add in this is post Wolf conquest of Terra and it's not out of the question that it's pretty common knowledge among Wolf Warriors in particular.

I'm surprised though, Clans restrict knowledge on certain subjects. Grant you, that was up til they invaded the Inner Sphere.  The Clans' knowledge on things expanded beyond what was regulated to them.

[Author]  I think I may have gotten a little carried away with the Meanwhile trope there.  [/Author]

Impromptu lab
Stalingrad
11 June 3154

Daniel looked at the tome the second recon team brought back from Stormsend.  The inscription on the simple iron band matched a language it called 'Draconic'.

"So what is it?"  Jenna asked from behind Daniel.

"According to the translation in this tome the inscription reads 'be master or slave thou who wears this is bound'.  I'm kind of reaching on some of that to make it be halfway sensible."  Daniel answered.

"That is frustrating."  Jenna furled her brow.

"Indeed."  Daniel flipped through a few more pages.

"New visitors."  Fezzik said from the doorway.

"Let's see what we have."  Daniel put the ring away.

The walk to what was becoming the main square of the settlement was thankfully short and quiet.

At first Daniel thought they were children but then he realized they were Gnomes.  He had seen a few around Kevin's castle but there were not many there and they didn't come to Stalingrad.  So it was easy to almost forget.

"Hello."  Daniel said.

"Good day.  I am Drevin and this is my wife Kima.  We're traveling merchants."  One spoke up.

"I am known as Daniel.  What sort of wares do you have for sale?"  Daniel smiled.

"Many things."  Drevin reached into his cloak and tossed what looked to be a small one inch cube on the ground that folded out into a table.

Next he pulled out and opened a bag then began placing items on the table.  It did not take long before Daniel realized that it should be impossible to fit all the items now on display in the size of bag in Drevin's hand.

"How much for this one?"  Daniel's eye caught on a necklace.

"A Necklace of Fireballs.  Many overlook it's utility due to it's limited number of uses.  5,000 gold pieces is quite the bargain for it."  Drevin said.

Kima had attracted a crowd of the children of the settlement as she put on a show with what appeared to be a pet ferret.

"It is interesting but I don't think we have the budget for it."  Daniel did the mental math.

"4,000."  Drevin countered.

"3,000 and you have a deal."  Daniel suspected he was still paying too much but there was something about the necklace that made it seem like it was more than the traveling Gnome merchant was letting on.

"Sold!"  Drevin smiled.

Kima's pet ferret bounded away from the children and started climbing up Jenna.

"Off me creature!"  Jenna startled.

"Sorry.  Nissa is usually better behaved than that."  Kima came over to Jenna.

"As it is a creature I will forgive it's ill manners this time but should it climb on me without my permission again I will have to have words with it's inept master that has failed to teach it properly."  Jenna left little doubt that it would just be words.

"To make up for the trouble I'll toss this Figurine of Unseen Servant in.  Exceptionally handy for young couples such as you and the misses."  Drevin smiled.

"Thanks?"  Daniel tried being polite but the uncertainty of exactly what the gift meant was too much.

"Well I think given today's commotion I best start packing up."  Drevin put everything back in his bag faster than Daniel thought would be possible.

"Perhaps next time things will not be so chaotic."  Daniel offered.

An aid brought out the gold and gave it to Drevin.

"Yes I think it will be.  For now pleasure doing business with you."  Drevin smiled.

The Gnomes began walking away, waving at the gathered citizenry.

Following the Gnomes

Once they were safely away from the settlement Kima checked around them.

"Okay no sign of scrying.  I think we got away with it."  Kima set down her pet ferret.

The ferret shifted form into that of an adult Elven woman.

"How bad is it?"  Drevin asked.

"No doubt about it.  Kevin and Selena have been at work on them.  I can tell certain memories and instincts have been altered but without knowing them before the alteration I cannot say for sure in what way they have been changed."  The Elf woman adjusted her long silver hair and clothes.

"Are they good candidates for the coming fight with Kevin or are they too deep in his pocket now?"  Kima pressed.

"Until we can figure out a way to get Kevin's scrying orb off them the information I can gather without advertising my presence is limited.  Their leader did not seem particularly loyal to Kevin and his wife certainly holds some resentment but it was hard to push past her libido and maternal instincts.  She would be a good candidate for sure except for the fact that if she is not already pregnant she soon will be."  The Elf woman shook her head.

"Damn.  We're too late to recruit them then."  Drevin cursed.

"Maybe.  I don't think we can write them off just yet.  My gut says there still may be a chance."  Kima added.

"At the very least they do seem to be the weakest point for a conventional attack.  Their trench lines and guard posts could be trouble though."  The Elf woman sighed.

"Well we better get back to the others before we draw anymore attention to ourselves."  Drevin prodded.

"Yes.  We need to get moving."  The Elf woman morphed back into a ferret.

[Author]  Time for some more fun.  [/Author]

An abandoned mineshaft
Crystal Mines of Jujax
12 June 3154

A dozen forms were gathered in the large abandoned mineshaft.  This site had been chosen because the nearby crystals that absorbed ambient magic in active parts of the mine would do nicely to shield them from magical detection

"There is little doubt now.  The outsiders brought more of those drivable constructs with them.  How many or how long he will be able to turn to his service is unknown but as soon as he does we can be sure Kevin Wellman will complete his conquest of our world."  An elf woman spoke clearly but softly.

"That is no good.  With the four we know of in his service already we don't have the power to attack him conventionally and no offense Elanis but even with you and your sister we don't have the magical power to match that kind of force."  A scruffy dark-skinned dwarf spoke up.

"None taken.  This Kevin is clearly a power beyond comprehension to command such forces as he does.  But we have reason to believe that at least some of the newest outsiders harbor great resentment toward Kevin.  Surely that they have the power to control these constructs means they may be formidable enough to match Kevin if we can distract the rest of his forces."  Elanis answered.

"Aye.  Does seem we need to do that as Kevin has clearly trained his Royal Guard on how to fight them.  What about the newest of his vassals?  Where do they stand?"  The dwarf grumbled again.

"Unclear.  Their leader seems to have no great loyalty towards Kevin.  Slid him a Necklace of Fireballs that also has some basic mind shielding and divination proofs on it so that maybe we can get a better sense on them but we're not sure we can count on them much.  No signs of even basic protections against magical infiltration.  If not for their flying contraptions and oval fortresses there seems to be nothing about them that really sets them apart from a typical human village."  Drevin spoke up.

"It is too dangerous for myself or Drevin, or Kima to return to their settlement so soon.  Indeed I suspect it would be rather suspicious for them to be visited by any stranger again so soon.  Maybe we can approach one of their adventuring groups?"  Elanis was deep in thought.

"That could be tricky.  They are being watched as well and they have warriors able to engage in hand to hand combat and overpower Orcs.  As far as I can tell despite their freakish size, strength, and durability they seem normal human."  A small figure spoke up.

"Based off your description I would swear they have Troll, Ogre, or even Orc blood in them."  The dwarf shook his head in disbelief.

"It is still our best shot.  Jeriniah and Tarala make ready.  Time is not our ally."  Elanis looked at the Dwarf and Halfling.

"Better than sitting around and waiting."  Jeriniah frowned.

"Okay."  Tarala was clearly uncertain.

"The rest of us need to make ready.  I suspect it is only a matter of days now before Kevin makes his next move."  Elanis looked over the remaining figures.

These rebels could approach one of the 'adventuring groups', offering to hire the group as muscle to protect them through the wilderness?  This way they can get to talk with them over a meal around a fire, and get a better idea of what the group (of Clan Warriors) is like.

Of course, this is assuming the Clan Warriors don't want to 'Trial' the Merchants for their goods, making relations even worse.

[Author]  Okay bad idea time.  [/Author]

Daniel's office
Stalingrad
13 June 3154
morning

Daniel limped into his chair.

Gilly chuckled at the sight.

Gwain almost looked like he was smirking.

"Spill."  Gilly beamed.

"I'd rather not talk about it."  Daniel knew some of the welts and bruises his wife had inflicted on him last night were still visible.

"That confirms it.  Was pretty obvious anyway."  Gilly seemed to be enjoying the spectacle entirely too much.

It wasn't terribly difficult to figure out what had gotten into her.  It was the only way she could express her frustration without outright breaking her oaths.

"So what demands my attention today?"  Daniel winced as he finished settling into his chair.

"Our expeditions are encountering more locals each day."  Gwain was giving Fezzik the day off.

"After the recent battle that would make sense.  Our merchants do indicate Kevin and our neighbors are clearly getting ready for something."  Daniel nodded.

"I'm not sure how it's our problem."  Gilly spoke up a little confused.

"Simple.  Kevin showed his hand.  In our conversations with the locals even though they seem uneducated in what Battlemechs are and what it takes to pilot them they are aware that even best case scenario that Kevin has now improved the capabilities of his forces and are expecting him to make a strike against his enemies.  That we are encountering more locals seems to back this as if they strike first it improves their odds.  Why this is our problem is we're the weak link no matter how you look at it.  Our neighbors are more established and have much better defensive terrain."  Daniel answered.

"Indeed.  We are even being carefully probed to see where our loyalties lie."  Gwain added.

"So our choices are stick with Kevin and have an army come through our trench lines or flip on Kevin and get stomped by Mechs we can't stop."  Gilly leaned back in her chair looking at the ceiling.

"Pretty much and Kevin's pretty well ensured we can't betray him without paying a very heavy price."  Daniel added.

"This is not good."  Gwain grumbled.

"So what do we do?"  Gilly asked still looking at the ceiling.

"Unfortunately we have no choice.  We have to do exactly what Kevin put us in place to do.  Hold this section of the line."  Daniel sighed.

"I hate it but you are right.  More we must make Kevin answer for."  Gwain grumbled.

Situation feels hopeless.   It will be interesting how Daniel group is going be able come up with way out.

One hopes that the rebel group can get a chance to talk to Jenna and Daniel, to find out their real loyalties

[Author]  Yeah my sanity needs preserving at work again.  [/Author]

Throne room
Wellman Castle
Still 13 June 3154
morning

"Thos new arrivals seem a bit uppity still."  Selena reclined in her chair.

"Yes, especially Gwain."  Kevin nodded.

"You want me to pay him a visit?"  Selena smiled.

"No need yet.  A sudden death may raise suspicions.  But when our enemies finally make their move, well who could think to blame us if he were to perish in the middle of battle thanks to a well placed and timed blade?"  Kevin smiled.

"I don't like getting in the middle of large fights but I still love it."  Selena purred.

dusk

Daniel looked through the binoculars over the field.

"Okay I recognize Orcs.  The small green ones I am pretty sure are Goblins.  Some sort of pale or greyish Dwarf.  The rest I'm not sure about."  Daniel swept across the force still quite some distance from them.

"You sure about your plan?"  Gwain looked through his own set.

"Oh yeah.  Which means I need to get back to my post."  Daniel looked at his watch.

Gwain simply nodded as Daniel walked off.

Command Center

Daniel watched the markers moving closer to the trench lines.  The clouds were already starting to blot out the sliver that was the waning moon and the starlight.  It would start soon.

The waiting was the worst part and it was all he could do until battle was joined.

After a silent eternity the markers representing enemy units started vanishing from the display.

New markers appeared on the display almost as fast as they vanished.

Daniel glanced at the observation orb.  Now that he knew it was there it was easier for him to spot it and keep track of it.  In a way he was quite glad it was here.

Trench lines

Selena popped into existence as close as she dared to where she figured Gwain would be.

The guard post ahead of her was spitting out bursts of fire.  He had to be there.

She was able to get past the sentries guarding the door with little trouble thanks to her powers.

Up the ladder she climbed and found her target with two others.

Not as bad as I expected but still could be trouble.  Selena frowned.

She softly crept up behind Gwain and readied her blade.

As she was about to strike a noise from behind her caused her to turn around.

"Now."  Jenna said loudly but calmly as Gwain and the others jumped out of the way.

Several bursts of rapid fire weapons tore into Selena.

As formidable as her defenses were Selena found she was not as bullet proof as she had hoped.  Before she could summon enough clarity of thought to teleport away the world started fading to black.

"Just as Daniel predicted."  Gwain grumbled.

"It must be the Kerensky genes.  As much as part of me still wants to hate him for the rest of what he is I cannot help but admire him in a way."  Jenna sighed.

"The necessity of our situation has made for a strange alliance and I cannot help but agree with your sentiment."  Gwain nodded.

Throne Room
Wellman Castle
a moment later

Kevin had been enjoying the read out on Daniel's holotable until he felt it.

His bond with Selena was unusual and something he still didn't fully understand but he knew that she was dead and it was Jennal's doing.

"As soon as our enemies are dealt with I want you to take the Royal Guards and teach our new neighbors a lesson."  Kevin decided they all must pay.

"It will be done."  Alina bowed and left the throne room.

Not long after the Captain of his guard had left he could sense something was amiss in his Castle.

"Oh no."  Kevin realized too late.

Daniel and a tall brunette human woman appeared in his throne room.

"Daniel.  Melinda."  Kevin felt himself going pale.

"Hello Kevin.  As you can see Selena grabbed the wrong box.  For that you can actually thank Gilly.  Once I realized how much you were focusing on me and the recon teams with your remote monitoring it became rather easy to put on a show for your benefit."  Daniel smiled.

"The display was rigged wasn't it?"  Kevin gulped.

"In a way.  Once Fezzik had met with Elanis and the Scartooth reps and laid out the plan they still showed up with just enough force to help us put on a bit of a show.  Needless to say the rest are dealing with your Royal Guards as we speak.  To be honest even with our surprise we still might not be able to overpower them.  Especially since you have mechs and they don't.  But by the time that fight is settled you'll be quite dead I suspect."  Daniel smiled.

"I never even questioned why Fezzik wasn't in that meeting.  Damn.  I got sloppy.  But you should know Daniel I'm not helpless without my wife and this conversation has given me enough time to think of how to end you and Melinda."  Kevin began chanting and gesturing.

Daniel pulled a flashbang out of his jacket and pulled the pin throwing it at Kevin's feet.

Ready for it Daniel was now drawing his sidearm and began pistol whipping Kevin.

"Just for making me marry Jenna I'm going to keep you alive just long enough for her to have her fun with you.  Gwain too.  Melinda while our distraction is still in effect I think we should be going."  Daniel grabbed Kevin and stood him up.

Melinda grabbed onto Daniel and began her incantations just in time for a ragged looking Alina to come back into the throne room to watch them vanish.

Daniel didn't like trusting Toreel 'magic' so much for his plan but once he had decided to do so anyway it had given them an option not previously possible.

"The fight near Wellman Castle still rages.  Your neighbors, especially his niece and her father will almost certainly now be hostile to you.  Our temporary alliance with the Scar Tooth is already coming apart now that Kevin has been dethroned."  Elanis Silverfall sat across from Daniel.

"And with a power vacuum things will be interesting for a while."  Daniel nodded.

"Yes.  None of this would have been possible if you had not lured out Selena.  Most of the magical defenses of Wellman Castle actually ran through her.  With her death we finally had a way in."  Elanis was clearly trying to dodge certain conversation subjects.

"It's okay Elanis.  We knew going in we were going to have to take a gamble.  Sure what Kevin offered us wasn't any worse than what we could expect anywhere else from where we come from but he was a dick about it and that never really sat right with me.  Smelled a little too much like slavery hidden behind the right words."  Daniel answered.

"At least you will have Melinda's help.  She may specialize in conjuration but she is still well versed in other magical arts as well.  Jerianiah Bronzebeard has also expressed an interest in staying to help teach your people how to make more sustainable weapons and how to use them.  What about the others you mentioned?  When do you think they will be back?"  Elanis looked relieved.

"It'll probably be several months before they finally give up.  That is assuming they have not met some other ill fate elsewhere.  It's trouble for another time."  Daniel answered with a slight smile.

[Author]  And with that I think I am going to call this one done.  I'll admit I am seriously considering coming back for a part two with how I left things but part of me wants to leave it like this as the premise of a Nebula California RPG campaign and seeing where my group goes with it first.  Either way higher than normal odds.  Especially as I am trying to force myself into experimenting with things I don't normally do.  I think I did a little better expanding out the cast over what I normally do without losing too much focus and having an actual proper villain.  [/Author]

Oh the next villian should be too easy... give Daniel maybe a decade, and he'll be just as bad as Kevin was...  ^-^

I'm glad you were able to end it. I like this and i liked your original one.

As with all things, I will try go back and archive the original story, despite it being left unfinished and put on the wiki.

Well done

Selena death in that trap was well done
"For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast, And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed:And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill, And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!"
