Research for a fic
« on: 12 February 2014, 19:46:48 »
Hi all.

I'm doing some research for a fic I'm starting, and I need a little help. Can anyone answer a few questions for me?

1: Does anyone know what the Clan fleet looked like around 3046? Thats 2 years before they met the Outbound Light. How many active warships did they have, and how many inactive ones?

2: What did the Comstar fleet look like at the same time? Active ships, inactive ships, functional (or close to it) shipyards for Warships or Dropships?

3: What (if any) sourcebooks talk about the history and development of Sub-cap weapons?

4: Which novels feature Tyra Miraborg? (And any sourcebooks, if they give any insights into her character?)

What did the Comstar fleet look like at the same time? Active ships, inactive ships, functional (or close to it) shipyards for Warships or Dropships?

According to the BattleTech Wiki, ComStar had the following ships in service around 3046:
CSV Invisible Truth, Cameron class Battlecruiser
CSV Blake's Strength, Black Lion class Battlecruiser
CSV Vision of Truth, Potemkin class Troop Cruiser
CSV Blake's Vengeance, Sovetskii Soyuz class Heavy Cruiser
CSV Harmonious Thought, Sovetskii Soyuz class Heavy Cruiser
CSV Righteous Fury, Aegis class Heavy Cruiser
CSV Swift Justice, Aegis class Heavy Cruiser
CSV Avenging Sword, Aegis class Heavy Cruiser
CSV Montpellier, Dante class Frigate
CSV Bordeaux, Dante class Frigate
CSV Narbonne, Dante class Frigate
CSV Cleansing Fire, Congress class Frigate
CSV Hollings York, Congress class Frigate
CSV Divine Wisdom, Lola III class Destroyer
CSV Holy Martyrdom, Lola III class Destroyer
CSV Strength Through Adversity, Lola III class Destroyer
CSV Blake's Vision, Lola III class Destroyer
CSV Ranger, Lola III class Destroyer
CSV Leander, Lola III class Destroyer
CSV Defender of Versailles, Essex class Destroyer
CSV Hammerstrike, Essex class Destroyer
CSV Deathblow, Essex class Destroyer
CSV Brandenburg Crusader, Essex class Destroyer
CSV Emerald, Essex class Destroyer
CSV Starlight, Essex class Destroyer
CSV Alacrity, Vincent class Corvette
CSV Resilience, Vincent class Corvette
CSV Determination, Vincent class Corvette
CSV Enlightened Path, Volga class Transport
CSV Dover, Faslane class YardShip
CSV Portsmouth, Faslane class YardShip
CSV Plymouth, Faslane class YardShip
CSV Dun Laoghaire, Faslane class YardShip
CSV Glamorgan, Faslane class YardShip
CSV Roslare, Faslane class YardShip

As for shipyards, they had the Titan Yards (Sol), O'Neil Yards (Sol), Columbus (Epsilon Pegasus), Luyten (unknown), Ross 248 (unknown). Certain factions/individuals would have known about/had access to the Ruins of Gabriel (Odessa)

They can't all have been crewed though, right? I mean, at this point they didn't have much call for warships- were they all battleready, or what?

(Also, if anyone wants to answer my Clan warships question, I don't need a complete listing, just numbers.)

Comstar's Fleet was largely inactive and in mothballs at this point. They lacked the crews to use them, and warship operations were not considered a priority. The fact that no other IS power had any warships, combined with their own focus on subtle manipulations rather then overt displays of force.

I don't have numbers on me, but by guestimate, the clans had 120-150 active Warships at the same time between them, plus more in reserves. How viable those reserves were is another matter.

As an educated guess, I'd say that ComStar was probably keeping a couple of lighter units in service as a defensive measure (never know when some House Lord might go crazy and decide that Terra was a prize worth the risk) and to keep an eye out for anyone who happened upon their hidden caches (Ross and Luyten). The fluff for the Dante class states that they were designed to be highly automated, which would allow ComStar to keep one active guard-ship in each key system, without needed a lot of trained crew-members on-hand.

The other ships were probably kept in mothballs, as Deadborder said. Just what that means I don't think has ever been stated. It could be that they were just placed in solar orbit and kept an eye on, they could have had a maintenance crew checking them out regularly, or they could have been docked at a massive shipyard complex like something out of Battlestar Galactica.

It is stated that at least one of the Faslane's was stationed at Columbus, probably in case an ExploreCorps. ship got into trouble and needed towing back or repairs in the field.

No Leviathans, maybe a couple less Nightlords, Conquerors, and Fredasas, everything else from later should be pretty much ready to go. The Clans were chomping at the bit to attack the Inner Sphere, Outbound Light just provided the final excuse.

If they weren't at a state of near absolute readiness, the timeline for launching Revival goes from nearly miraculous to outright magical.

...did any sourcebooks actually talk about them before they appeared in Tactical Operations? Maybe some of the latter day tech readouts or Jihad books touched on the subject.

4: Which novels feature Tyra Miraborg? (And any sourcebooks, if they give any insights into her character?)

Lethal Heritage is the only novel where she made an appearance, reference was made to her and her actions played a role in certain events in Blood Legacy.

As far as sourcebooks go, 20 year Update would probably be the only book that treats the FRR as more than an afterthought to give some idea of the culture and history that would have shaped her. The Old Clan Wolf sourcebook, Invading Clans, and Era Report 3052 may touch on her, but are unlikely to provide much if any real insight.
