With so many warships being built I think it is time that the idea about building a Fox I variant without a LF battery to speed up construction and to have them protecting and patrolling the space of the FedSuns is very viable. Plus those could be sold to high standing mercenary commands as well.

I see the Nova Cats are thinking smartly and starting to build more of the smaller and cheaper light clan battlemechs instead of focusing on only larger omnimechs. Combined with the Dragoons producing clan tech battlemechs as well should give the FedSuns a powerful core of elite mechs.

The High Command's thinking is better to use too many warships and reduce losses than send in a first wave that gets destroyed and have to wait years to rebuild. So they are weighting the scales as much as possible.

The WOB has had time to build up the SDS network. Not as much as in canon, but they did stop warship production a while ago and have been producing drones. Frankly on some level they know they cant stop the combined ComGuards/AFFS/potentially Nova Cats from breaking through, but they are almost hoping if they can just make the cost of the invasion too great a deal might be struck. It's not going to happen but at this stage the "sane" (relative concept) members of the WOB higher up's know it's their only chance.

Plus they DO still have a lot of warships left. Not as many as they did have off course. And a lot of them are old relics. But they do still have at least some modern ships left. They even have a hoarded Farragut battleship left. Although how long that old warhorse will last if it goes up against two Iron Dukes is another question...  They are relying HEAVILY on the drones to make up the lack of warships.

Well the modern AFFS has no issue with using nukes in response to the WOB. So they will be jumping in with weapons lockers full of them.

First welcome back: thanks for the update, can’t wait to see the big naval battle it’s gonna be massive any way you look at it (take your time writing it if your not happy with it! We’ll be happy either way!)

Giving Warships to needs is a tough call…. You have to make sure that only ‘loyal’ commands would get them and only the smaller corvette designs. You can’t afford to have the Broadsword Legion get one and then turn to orbitally bombard someone. But the Illician Lancers, Blue Star Irregulars, and Vegan Rangers are certainly three good choices.

Warships are just logistically (and in terms of personal) far too expensive for any merc unit to run who isn't Wolfs Dragoons with their fingers in pies all over the place (or at least before they got smashed by the WOB). And the second they start to take any kind of damage, the price for repairing them is just ... you'll end up Company Stored either way really.

Pocket Warships OTOH might be something that you can do business with. Especially if sub-capital weapons come into play in this fic.
"I, the Baron of Strang, care not for your new names. Clans? Jade Falcons? I call you by your true name: Scum of the Star League, traitors of free will, persecutors of the Periphery come back to lord it over freedom-loving people. Come ahead, you steel-eyed robots! Come ahead and taste what a million like-minded people think of you and your damn Clans!"

What does a merc unit need a Warship for?
1) Orbital fire support/C&C:  Doesn't seem to be a factor.
2) Logistical support:  It's expensive compared to a jumpship and some dropships that have more versatility.
3) Escorting them into dangerous situations where other mercs can't go: Against other Warships...often more than one, so it's outnumbered unless against a non-state actor (ie, pirate hunting).  As a Ngo would say:  If you can't afford to lose it, you can't afford to use it.

Fort Thomas Fairfax

Fairfax

Bremond PDZ

Woodbine Operational Area

Draconis March

Federated Suns

"What a dump." Major Finn Styles muttered looking at the half ruined base which in a few short months would be his new home. His expression mirrored his words, he clearly wasn't impressed with the prospects of being based out of the old Fort Thomas Fairfax.

Colonel Gregory Van Schmidt chuckled and patted his second in commands shoulder with the ease of long friendship. The two men had served together on and off for decades and when he'd been offered his new command he had immedietly known who he wanted as his executive officer. "It's not that bad Finn. The basic structure is sound and the Planetary Guard major who showed me around last week told me they have kept up at least the core of the base for their own use since the planet was retaken from the Drac's back in the First Succession War and the old Fairfax DMM wasn't reformed after it's destruction on Tishomingo in the Second Succession War. So the basics should be sound. Barracks, offices, firing ranges, supply depots..."

"To the standard of a Planetary Guard sir. Which is vastly different from a Regular Army command's standards. Or mine." Finn countered.

The colonel's chuckle turned into an outright laugh. "Which is why I asked for you specifically old friend. If anyone can get this place into shape it's you... Just remember though, we don't need the place looking like the Davion Brigade of Guard's Wellington Barracks on New Avalon. We're commanding a Training Battalion not a front line formation!"

"No command will thank us for graduating slobs sir. The recruits we get might as well get used to Regular Army standards now." The hang dog expression on the major's face was slipping however. He was almost smiling. Despite himself he was looking forward to the new command. Helping set the standards for an entirely new training command that would feed into the proposed 1st Fairfax Borderers. So setting the tone of two commands really. Fighting the urge to smile he continued. "Plus it's not exactly just a training battalion sir. These day's the training battalions are effectively full LCT's. I suspect more than a few of the local Planetary Guard who are moving out might be back in time for training to front line standards and assignment to the Borderers..."

"You might just be right Finn." Giving his friends shoulder a squeeze before letting go Colonel Van Schmidt nodded to him. He could already see Styles mind getting to work on the problem of turning a run down old DMM base that had been used off and on for the last 270 odd years by the Planetary Guard and whatever noble retainers who had needed it into a fully functional base for the 1st Fairfax Reinforced Training Battalion. A reinforced battlemech battalion, four battalions of armour, a support regiment of artillery, VTOL's and engineers, a battle armour regiment and an aerospace wing. More troops than this old relic of a base had seen probably since the last time the Fairfax DMM had been based here. "Just remember, we'll eventually have to share the base with the 1st Fairfax Borderer's when they form up. So keep that in mind when you are running the recruits ragged getting this place spic and span!"

"I will sir. Still no reason that we can't use repairing and refurbishing the place as a good training tool for the recruits!" This time Styles did smile, envisioning the exercises he could devise to help train everyone from the lowliest astech to the mechwarriors in field repairs, fortification construction, etc... Yes it might just be fun after all. "And I'm sure that the future CO of the Borderer's, whoever that might be, will be grateful if we have the areas of the fort his unit will inhabit in a habitable state for him in due course..."

"You might just be right Finn. You might just be right." Turning Van Schmidt pointed. "Speaking of which, I think the first order of business is to get those warehouses near the old dropship landing pads cleared up and ready. In the next few months we'll be getting a lot of equipment shipped in, and unless I miss my guess at least some of it will be cast off's from battle damaged units or units that are getting refitted with better gear. So some workshops and repair gantries will be needed..."

Nodding the XO of the new 1st Fairfax Reinforced Training Battalion followed his superior's finger. "I'd put money on you being right sir. What I was thinking was..."

3072 - June - Interlude: A modern day Machiavelli
Office of the Regent - Special Advisor's Room
Asgard
Mount Wotan
Tharkad
Donegal Province
Lyran Alliance

Tormano Liao paused for a second in composing the memo he was sending to a few of his old "friends" and smiled at how the world turned. This had been his old office whenever Katherine Steiner-Davion had required him to work from Mount Wotan, although he vastly preferred the suite of rooms and offices he had had within the the Royal Palace itself. Still this wasn't so bad and more importantly it was good to be back walking the halls of power. He even had to admit that he preferred working for Adam Steiner over Katherine. Or Katrina as she had ridiculously insisted on being called. His previous employer's major flaw was that she genuinely seemed to believe that she was the most devious person in the room at all times and that she could manipulate anyone. Well... Everyone had seen how that had worked out for her back in December of 3060! She had attempted to play some of the AFFS's strongest characters for fools and had ended up in chains. The former heir to the Liao throne couldn't help but allow himself a brief private smile as he recollected the advice he had given to reinforce her mistaken belief that Jackson Davion would go along with her little coup. A true political operator would never have fallen for that, but Katherine had always wanted to believe what suited her. The fact that she hadn't insisted he come with her had been the final evidence of her naivety into how things would go. Had she had any clue that he had been misleading her she would have insisted he follow her into the Lion's, or perhaps Fox would be more appropriate, den. He shook his head and composed his face again. Katherine Steiner-Davion - just smart enough to be dangerous, not smart enough to be deadly. Combine that with her lack of insight and delusions of grandeur and she had never stood a chance of coming out on top. Which just proved she didn't deserve his loyalty.

Now Adam Steiner... He was a different story. Oh he didn't have Katherine's gift for intrigue and politics, but in his case that was an asset. A lot could be made of a man with a reputation as an honourable and gruff soldier. Much more than a princess who nobody really trusted. Even more so when said soldier was vastly out of his depth in the political arena and would come to rely upon his key advisor more and more as time passed. Of course the temporary nature of his position as Regent was a hinderance, but something could always be done about that in due course. And even if Hanse Steiner did grow up to assume the Archon's throne, the Regent who shaped him and was also his General of Armies would be ideally placed to influence him... While in time perhaps the young Hanse would need a political mentor too... Someone who the Regent could appoint to train him for instance. Yes. The future was looking rather positive for Tormano Liao if he did say so himself!

There were only two real potential threat's to his position here on Tharkad. The first was that if Adam managed to ham fistedly break the very Lyran Alliance he was hoping to preserve, a very real possibility of late given the divisions that were breaking out all over the Alliance. Still things weren't beyond repair. He'd finally managed to arrange for Adam to agree to release all but a handful of the arrested delegates - after speedy and almost entirely show trials which had confirmed their innocence. One of Tormano's old friends within the Tharkad judiciary who had been appointed by Katherine had seen to that. That should relieve a lot of the political pressure and the proposal he had just sent over to Adam regarding the renaming of the Lyran Alliance back to the old and popular name of the Lyran Commonwealth would help more...

The second threat was of course Victor Davion and his Federated Suns. Given the history there it was fair to say that the warrior prince probably wasn't too fond of him and might exert some of his still considerable influence to thwart his rising star within the Alliance or even have him dismissed entirely. Particularly if he was able to repair the relationship with Adam Steiner or forge a new relationship with his nephew Hanse Steiner. The first was entirely possible as Adam and Victor were both soldiers and could potentially build on their mutual respect as such to create a working relationship. While the second was almost inevitable as the young prince looked to his famous uncle for guidance and direction. Those two possibilities had to be strangled in their crib so to speak. Which was why he was sending word to some of the agents he had cultivated in his time in charge of Free Capella and also as Katherine's key advisor via this memo. A few extra protests within the conquered former worlds of the Capellan Confederation would keep drawing Victor's eyes in that direction and making him spend key resources to placate them rather than to helping his fraying alliance with the Lyrans. In time, who knew, perhaps those protests might spread and even take in the former Lyran worlds which were joining the Federated Suns after the recent debacle on Thorin... They might even get worse. Hard for Adam and Victor to get along when "Lyran terrorists" were bombing AFFS troops on worlds that Adam saw as rightly belonging to his realm... While Hanse Steiner was hardly going to look favourably on an uncle who "stole" some of his birthright...

Tormano allowed himself one final chuckle before he went back to laying out his instructions in a routine memo that would be forwarded via HPG through a dozen shell and dummy accounts before reaching his agents...

Hence why it's a "routine memo"... all in code. Means almost nothing unless you know what the routine message means. :p "buy more paperclips" doesn't exactly scream "kill a high ranking AFFS officer" does it? :p

With the competency of 'Free Liao' at times I can imagine the agents questioning what "200 tons of Paper Clips" is

Agent one "is that 200 tons of C34?"
Agent two "no it's 200 tons of quickly decomposing nerve agent"
Agent three "your both crazy, they really need paper clips, Can't they find staples? or do they need their documents pristine?"

I'd actually wonder how much in the way of assets Tormano actually has left these days.

Between Sun Tzu continually trying to squash his people, the conquest and fragmentation of the Confederation and the Davions working hard for quite some time now - plus probably some of his people who decide that its pointless fighting for a lost cause and flip to the other side (not to mention that Tormano has probably burned a lot of resources by this point in his back and forth fighting)...

But God help Tormano if these 'Lyran Terrorists' are figured out and tracked back to him. I don't think Adam is the kind of guy you want to piss off like that...

‘I need the 24th PaperClips delivered to Thorin by the first of August, and I need ‘Clippy’ there as well to ‘escort’ them in. Don’t be afraid to use the ‘White Out’ provided to ‘erase’ any mistakes in the area. Also make sure that the ‘ink’ doesn’t spill to the other nations. Be aware of ‘reporters’ on this ‘story’”

And here we are. Sorry to post here, but this is related to this series.

I have completed archiving the Reborn series.  I've been speaking with Billy Boy Mark II, he says he will revisit the series.

However, in the mean time.  I'm adding link so people can casually read entire series, with some approved record sheets and mechs of stuff he originally had a fluff variants.
