Yeah, in its appropriate setting, Urban Guerilla is possibly one of the best SPAs in the entire game. It isn't always the factor of win-or-lose, but man it doesn't hurt to be able to basically double your infantry presence for a few turns. Oh, and even outside of an urban setting, ignoring the damage bonus for getting hit in the open is niiiice- add to that it makes squad-deployed infantry even harder to hit.

Yeah, we hated them a lot.  Still, even without that SIA (Special Infantry Ability ;) ), the PBI still would probably have been the last units taken out just because once they are in a building, doing ANY significant damage to them is impossible without a lot of hits (I think the best one we had to do that was a slightly modified Hunchback 4P ).  Our Flamers can't do much damage to a Building, which means they take almost no damage from them.

Even when we were trying to retake bridges in one of the last Aurigan Reach scenarios, we still didn't do much damage to them.  Of course, unless they were armed with Missiles, they couldn't do much to our Mechs till we could spit on each other.  However, part of the job was escorting Engineers to disarm the bombs of the bridges, and they would be in the open from their fire while they did that.

I would like to play more infantry but that makes a lot more units on the board.

Our Flamers can't do much damage to a Building, which means they take almost no damage from them.

You can, however, set the building on fire (and another use for inferno SRMs).  That forces a survival roll each round, and if the fire doesn't go out the CF is reduced each round as well.  Now, trying to do that in the rain... not so easy.
Think about it.  It's what we do.

I could check with the CM to see if that's within the Advanced Rules he's allowing.  I can't remember off hand.  I wasn't there when we first ran in to buildings (coming in later that mission), and the next couple times we were encouraged to NOT destroy buildings.

So I have been a big user of Infantry, until I was banned from what local games for Inf abuse.

I'm not talking swarming you with hordes of BA.  But I have been know in Campaigns, which is a lot of what we played to deploy "Scout/Sniper" unit for deployment behind enemy lines.  To search out anything of value, and call in Arty and Air Strikes on it, as well as plinking at "VIP" targets.  In the old days I used 2 Heavy Gyro Jet rifles using the rules from 3026 TRO for my rifles, with 3 security grunts.  Now Daryk has updated them.   >:D

Base security is a great use for Inf, I recommand that players always bring their own, as otherwise you have to either have to full trust the locals you work for to provide it and/or still need to sleep/eat/etc.. with 1 eye on your unit security.  An enemy commando unit, slips in and SMG your tech staff, or grenades your sleeping area, hids small charges in your ammo resupply area...
Nope it's not playing sporting old chap, but I have done it with infantry against basecamps without their own.

Honestly real infantry has very limited roles on the battlefield, that not a built up area, where they can effect the battlefield.
"For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast, And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed:And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill, And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!"

I use infantry all the time. Since some time ago I started playing a campaign(MegaMek) that started in the 3040s on an unspecified planet in the Periphery.
I know there's no point in looking for reality in Battletech, but I'm trying for a more believable setting given that most of the combat units on both sides are things like infantry, APCs, tanks, etc.
Battlemechs are a distinct minority in terms of unit numbers, giving the game a whole new dimension.
For one thing, Mechs actually serve as support for other units. Next, one gets the impression that such a Mech is a truly elite unit, and yet you try to handle it with care as much as possible, because such a loss really hurts.
And with such infantry deployment, I also completely rethink what types of Mechs are useful. Mechs purely with energy and "big guns" are good against other armor and Mechs, but when you have several platoons of mechanized infantry rolling into your position, things like a machine guns and flamethrowers to support your own infantry are priceless on your Mech.

And which types of infantry do I use? All of them - riflemen are the basic type of infantry. Machine gunners against other infantry. SRM infantry as support against tanks and mechs.
The motive system affects the type of deployment. Regular infantry can hide in the woods, but mechanized infantry can keep up with tanks and Mechs. Jump infantry can easily move over obstacles.
Field guns are real good - properly positioned, they can take on tanks and Mechs with continued fire.

In short - the use of infantry and all its types adds a lot of flavour to the game, but of course I'm talking about a situation where such a distribution of units on both sides is similar.
