steampunk battletech?
« on: 28 December 2011, 23:58:36 »
ok, i have been reading way to much stuff about steampunk settings lately and other game componys have been putting out cool stuff so that lead to my unhinged mind working on idea for battletech as a steam punk setting.......i know there are rules for steam driving things and the primatove stuff is out......
so that leads to adding stuff just for something different..meybe there is a plantet that is on the middle of a steampunk setup....

as for weapons..
rifles, artty and the short versions i think, rocket launchers, MRMS?, MG, VECH FLAMERS, melee weapons of all kinds, meybe chem lasers?
airships, trains, big tanks....really big tanks, airplanes, moblie stustures, power armor i can see shorta, protos meybe modded with clockwork men with brains and romote control...., ships,
just mussing for this right now....

Never played the game but Warmachine seems close to that concept outside if you take away the magical aspects.

I'll third the call for WARMACHINE.

Also, I'll throw the Dystopian Wars hat into the ring as well.

I kinda like the idea in theory.  Taking TW basic rule set and using it for a steampunk setting would be interesting.  Would need to change the setting entirely, and we'd need whole new weapons classes, but it could work

There are some Mech looking things in Dystopian Wars, even with mini's. They are a little big for a Battletech game, and the scales they are using are 1/1200 vs the 1/300ish for Battletech.

There's always CGL's own leviathans, which has steampunk, but no mechs yet

BattleTech does have steam engines for support vehicles. I'm sure you could adapt their masses to 'Mechs and, as ckosacranoid, limit weapons to a selection of retro-weapons. Throw in an IndustrialMech chassis and you're good to go.

I've foumd myself thinking along those lines more than once. Here's an example i whipped up that was on the old forums.

Also, if you're creating a whole new setting, you could come up with setting-specific weapons, as
long as you preserve the mechanics of the game system (dmg/ht/min/short/med/long/etc.)

How would you do a Tesla Coil??In Battletech? That always seems to be a favorite with Steampunk tech.

Being a fan of most things steam punk I would love to see what could be done. I rember on the old forums some one was doing a fanfic evolution of the battlemech all the way back from clockwork punk up. It was a great thread and I was hoping the person who did it would have brought it to this forum, hasn't happened tho.

Since we would be throwing Tounament Legal rules to the wind anyway, I'd use a combination of Primitve tech and Industrial construction to create all kinds of odd 'mechs. Afterall, wheres the fun of Battlepunk (or whatever name you want to use) without steam powered Tracked centaur 'mechs parachuting from armored zepplins?

A good choice. Perhaps I'll reserve Battlepunk for a Manei Domini roleplaying game.

How about SteamTech 8)

We used that for the Steampunk equipment supplement for GURPS, way back in the day.

Well, you could use an ICE engine and say that it is steam-powered. In addition, you'll need to use Ballistic weapons, Rocket Launchers, Melee Weapons and maybe Chemical Lasers. This is cool, I may need to try to make one myself... brb!
