Upcoming BT Maps
« on: 02 October 2018, 17:20:28 »
I know the maps in the new boxed sets are paper, but I'm wondering if the new map sets will also be paper, or mounted on board? I'm hoping for mounted, though I know some people love their paper.

Paper. The board-style maps of the past two box sets are cost-prohibitive.

Wasn’t there a cardboard price spike earlier this year?

Thanks! I love cardboard, but the art in the new sets is so vastly superior, I'll definitely go that route over my ugly boards.

It's risen significantly in the past few years. The entire board game industry is feeling it.

Cubby are the maps like the older ones where the mapsheet has a blank side or are both sides printed with mapsheet terrain?

I was thinking that if the paper map has a blank side, I could use spray glue to mount them to foamcore boards to help protect them, but if I'm losing half my mapsheets that may not be a good idea.

I believe they are double sided.  The ones in the new box are double sided

Glue thin transparent plastic plates on both sides of the map. Or something like that, like that book protection film thing, if it is still available. Now, i've no idea where you might get right stuff for this, and i have no idea how you'd store them afterwards, but i'd image your maps would be stiffer and safe for sure.

EDIT I have no idea why i'm coming up with an idea that, upon reading it, feels overtly complicated.

Yeah, that's the other drawback to my idea with the foamcore as well.

That's due to you internalizing my motto: "Why do something simple when you can make it complex?" ;)

calculating $5 a pop times my map collection gave me a stomach ache

Why $5 a pop? Get a couple for playing, and find a cheap artist portfolio;

https://www.amazon.com/Star-Products-Portfolio-Classic-Artist/dp/B0027AEKW0/ref=sr_1_4?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1538752516&sr=1-4&keywords=portfolio+case+24%22+x+36

, or even cheaper buy one of these at home depot (sorry Canadian).

https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.16-inch-l-x-12-inch-w-x-12-inch-d-small-moving-box.1000670335.html

Don't assemble just tape flat and use as a carry-all.

Total cost.. $5 a sleave for 2-4 ($10-$20) and $2 for a box, total game cost - $25 after taxes.

Sad, but not all that surprising.
I will miss the heavy duty map boards, but they couldn't have been cheap to produce.

My only concern would be durability over the long term. It looked like the prototypes were somewhat glossy, which makes me worry about cracking over time along the fold lines. The older, matte, paper maps were subject to tearing, but the print was very durable.

(The really ancient cardboard maps were also pretty durable, but most of mine are showing their age, after 30+ years of dedicated service.)

 I didn't know those toploaders existed -- I'm gonna have to track some down. I play at a local coffee shop, so anything that would keep condensation (I'm an iced-tea drinker) off the maps is a good thing. Thanks for the suggestion!

i don't trust myself to not ruin the maps sliding them in and out of the sleeves. currently they're all safe and sound in the 2007 CGL introbox

it would still be cheaper than lamination though

Yeah, same here. I loved the hexpack boardgame type maps and bought all of them. It's a shame there won't be any more. But hey new maps sound good to me too.

Cubby are the maps like the older ones where the mapsheet has a blank side or are both sides printed with mapsheet terrain?

Both sides have mapsheet terrain; that is, no blank side like the old FASA maps. Gotta use that real estate where we can.

My only concern would be durability over the long term. It looked like the prototypes were somewhat glossy, which makes me worry about cracking over time along the fold lines.

Hm...I can't speak to that, because I have yet to actually hold one of the new maps IRL. It's possible that no one can speak to the "over time" part of your point, just because they're so new.

My old glossy Battleforce maps are still looking good. Granted they don't get as much use as the traditional BT maps, but even those have held up ok.
