Challenge - Fight the Horde!
« on: 21 November 2020, 13:10:58 »
I'm stuck at work this weekend, so you guys will have to game for me!

Here's the challenge:

1: Load up Megamek, select any one canon mech, provided it mounts at least two or more antipersonnel burst-fire weapons. I'm talking flamers, machine guns, SPLs, that stuff. I know other weapons are deadly against infantry and have greater ranges, but that's not the challenge, so they don't count. Give this mech any pilot skills you want.

2: Load up a bot, and give it the following:
Foot Rifle platoons, g3/a4 skills, enough to equal 2x your BV.
Jump Laser platoons, g3/a4 skills, enough to equal your BV.
1 Point of laser Elementals, g2/a3 skills.

3: Set up a 2x1 mapsheet area. Canyons are preferred, but the idea is terrain that forces very close-in combat, but you can't just light half the map on fire, so not cities or heavy wooded maps.

4: You start on one end, the bot starts on the other. Your objective is to cross the map alive.

How'd it go?

could be interesting. may i suggest that we ban the use of the Piranha and the Scarecrow, as that would make the scenario just a little too easy?

Leave them in for now, I'm curious. Will their mass murder capabilities compensate for their higher BV, or will the increased numbers of enemy infantry mean their armor gets chewed up just as fast as they're chewing through troops?

The Piranha is a bit too extreme - way more speed than you need, but light on the armor.

I´m thinking more in the direction of the Battle Cobra A. Six small pulse lasers, the Clan version which matches the range of the laser infantry. Plus the medium pulse lasers should be useful against the elementals. BV value 1466, which admittedly a lot.

For something cheaper, you can´t really go wrong with the bog-standard Firestarter FS9-H. Especially if your goal is to mostly just run through the infantry rather than fight them.

The brand new Viper with a Plasma Cannon and two AP Gauss seems like it was made specially with this scenario in mind.

For some of these mechs, what kind of opposition numbers are we looking at? I may have overestimated how much infantry this would entail.

30+ platoons for that Viper, at least.

I did it with an introtech stinger which had about 6 rifle and 4 laser platoons. The bot clustered them so I got through the map fairly quickly until I started getting closer to the force.

Scotty - THAT'S a party! :)

Hmmm...rather than just hand the win to the fastest mech, what if the mech needs to drive off the horde? All units operate under forced withdrawal, and the infantry force as a whole will begin to withdraw once half of its units are crippled or destroyed.

I was actually wrong, the Viper doesn't have a Plasma Cannon config; I was mixing up a Viper and a Fire Moth from the new Rec Guide.

That said, the Fire Moth P tickles my fancy, with 12 Micro Pulse Lasers at 841 BV.  That gives you 15 foot platoons, nine jump platoons, and the Elementals point against a 'Mech that's fully capable of reaching a +5 TMM even 'wasting' a half dozen MP turning.  I'd probably take that bet.

all's well since we've got 'mechs optimized for infantry killing.  (Piranha?)

but how about this: Find the WORST choice you can, a 'mech with very high BV, (So you get yourself a very big swarm), but few to NO weapons optimal for anti-Infantry.

Keep the antipersonnel guns requirement, but it would be interesting. Something like that one infighter Turkina config, or that mass murder unique Sunder? :)

I feel like the Bloodhound B3 would be pretty well placed to excel at this challenge.

ER Flamers for the extra range against the infantry, enough speed to position itself well, enough durability to last through a few incoming shots. The Medium Pulse and Fluid Gun (w/ inferno, ofc) are there to wipe out the Elementals.

And its BV is pretty low compared to a lot of other offerings at 1006.

Perhaps a Hellstar? 3084 BV, with only 4 ERPPCs, aka 12 kills per turn max (assuming they're in cover), while lacking the speed to just make a run for it. The Glass Spider also seriously loses out. 1825 BV, can kill at most 4 infantry in cover, low speed and armor. Galahad's a little cheaper and more durable, but also slower. I guess they don't have anti-personnel weapons in the first place, though. Perhaps an Adder Prime?

Especially screwed since the recommended map settings render their range irrelevant.

but would flechette rounds in the AC20 make a significant difference?

Awesome.  3 PPCs, 1 Small Laser, 3/5 movement, and 1600 BV.  Your only real chance is to back up slowly and hoping the near-constant fire from the PPCs can whittle down the platoons.

Archer.  2 LRM-20, 4/6 movement, but 4 Medium Lasers aand 1477 BV.  As long as the LRMs hold out you can engage from a good range, but once they are empty you need to close with medium lasers.  Depending on the config you may have them rear-mounted to give you all-around firepower.

I tried using a long custom map (because it was originally a Hold the Line generated mission) with a WHM-8D with a 3/3 pilot. He was FOUR hexes from the edge when he soaked nothing but owwy and the mech literally melted from all directions... I think the degree of impossibility increases with higher BV? (But i was just trying to reach the edge not actually be godzilla vs the horde...)
