Classic BT, BSP, and VTOLs

Question:  Can you target a VTOL with BSP Bombs or Strafing?

The BMM is sort of silent on the issue being a mech only publication.   Alpha Strike rules make it sound like you can, however, Total Warfare rules say that you can strafe but not bomb an active VTOL / Aerospace unit.

Bonus Question:

Does the height of the VTOL matter in any capacity?   Does a VTOL say 30 levels above the ground get effected by an offensive BSP artillery strike to the ground of the hex its base in in take damage.

You can strafe and strike VTOLs but you can't bomb them.

VTOLs can be damaged by bombs Area Effect weapons go up and down as well as out to other hexes. See TW page 173.  I think a VTOL flying at 30 Levels above the ground would be safe.

typically for direct fire weapons in Battletech, elevation doesn't matter, only horizontal distance (particularly with VTOLs)  What this means is that you can be at 2 hexes horizontall, fire your machinegun at a VTOL at 30 levels up?

and hit him.

Arguably, in a pure rules context, if the VTOL is in the same ground hex as an artillery strike, regardless of altitude, they're going to have to eat the hit.

But that's rules-laywering, and doesn't have anything to do with sensible or even semi-realistic play.  I could see your question going either way, this might be a good question to bring up with the Devs.

The rules in Total Warfare say how many levels a blast from an area effect weapon takes. That being 2 levels above and below for the target hex and 1 level above and below in the surrounding hexes.

You know I was looking at that last night and it seems that only goes into effect when water is hit and buildings.  Which seems really odd.

It does seem odd but it's the only reference I can see about  VTOL's taking damage from bombings.

Odd or not, that is correct.

Oddness is a standard characteristic of RAW.  TPTB are human too.
