Combat vehicles with Hardened armor?
« on: 21 September 2020, 11:06:49 »
I've seen a lot of 'Mechs with Hardened armor, but I can't remember any combat vehicles using it. I can only think of the Von Luckner Yakuza refit from XTRO:Most Wanted. Are there any others?

Thanks! I was hoping for a Schildkrote variant, but I guess that was too much. ;)

Most of the gun trailers also use it, although they're not self-propelled.

The Schild- Turtle- has armored motive so . . . eh . . . besides, give it Ferro-Lam!  Good luck stopping it then!  Hmm, can vehicles have reinforced structure?

But the Turtle is fun . . . tested a lance of them against a RAT MSC medium lance . . . it was bad for the mechs.

I really have wanted to roll out a Narukami or two but never got the opportunity on the table yet.

Hardened armor is expensive and blowing  a piloting check for Hover , WIGE, and VTOLS has too high a death chance. IF you are going to invest in a vehicle with an XL or XXL engine  maybe but if it is a Fuel Cell  or ICE it should be a cheap  attrition unit. And finally  come the Dark Age where re - enginnered lasers happen  not worth the investment .

Mechs routinely get reduced to 20 percent or less their total armor and still live where as combat vehicle's that become immobile around 80 percent and aimed shot to death if not abandoned.  You are gust leaving more expensive battlefield salvage out there . Heavy Ferro fibrous is better as almost no mech can use it and you ultimately get better protection out of it .

Hardened armor gives a -2 to TAC checks, that's a massive advantage to a combat vehicle...

Btw, Hardened armor Shildkröte! ;D

I thought VTOLs, WiGEs, and hovers can’t use hardened to begin with?

Well, Omnis cannot mount it . . . hence the retcon to the Gulltroppr.

According to Tactical Operations Advanced Units and Equipment, p. 92, you are correct. None of those can use Hardened armor.

The armor doesn't affect combat vehicle MP but does impose a +1 driving skill modifier. (p. 93)

Which doesn't make sense and really drops the effectiveness of the thing.

Which is why I just houserule that super-heavy omnivehicles can mount Hardened Armor.

Since this thread here revolves around Armored motive systems too, I was wondering if a trailer profits from a dedicated armored motive system too or just the truck?

Thanks!

A trailer has no motive system?

And a Armored Motive System (like the Schil-Turtle) is different than Hardened Armor.

A trailer has no motive system?

Are you sure? Because on the Record Sheets of the Gun Trailer (TRO 3145 Mercs) the Motive System Critical Hit Table is still given.
I'm just wondering since it would make the Truck/Trailer combo quite a bit more powerful if you only needed the AMS for the Truck and not both.

A trailer wouldn't have a powered motive system, but it's got wheels and presumably brakes.  Seems like a motive system to me.

What he said, the main thing was that the motive system being armored would not make a difference in the trailer being able to leave a combat zone unlike a vehicle that has its survivability boosted by a armored motive system.

But rules-wise, is there any effect if a trailer actively towed by a truck in a combat situation would receive any criticals to its motive system? So would the whole combo suffer for it or not at all?

All these years playing and I never knew that!

I'd think that a motive system hit on a trailer would affect the entire consist unless the trailer was unhitched and parked somewhere.  Ofcourse there's RL basis to this but I can't remember how the rules address it.
