for me it's more that you can get trapped in a pocket universe where you're doing a whole extra subset of rolling that takes a half hour to resolve because no one remembers the rules  ;D

Vehicles that skid into a building with a basement are hosed - there's no ramp to get out if the ground floor collapses.  Same with conventional infantry.
Think about it.  It's what we do.

It is unfortunate Field Gun artillery weighs what it does . . . it should not.  The field gun versions lack the links to automated fire control, internal ammo bins, and cooling systems of mechs/tanks/aeros, they should weigh less like the BA weapons.  But it is a niche deployment so . . .
Us Magshot Gauss Rifle or AP Gauss Rifle if you want something lighter, those a half a ton each, but require two crewmen.

No, it's Motorized Infantry with their ATVs that can climb up inside of a building to the roof... true story that!

They can, especially if the TacOps climbing rules are in play.

What in earth do those have to do with this thread about tube artillery?

Use them as Field Guns?

Great idea for the Mech Mortars too.

Mech Mortars are not legal field guns.

And while those Gauss guns are legal field guns, they have absolutely no place in a thread dedicated to giving infantry units an indirect fire capability.

I was agreeing with your solution to make them legal.

Gauss weapons are not the first time direct weapons were brought up. That happened with the Wire-Guided Missile Infantry which was then followed by field guns and their range and weight. Hence my guess for why gauss weapons were brought up. Long range, low weight field guns.

Personally, I think the entire mortar issue would be solved immediately by adding Mech Mortars to the list of allowable field guns.
wait they are not allowed as field guns?

No. The only allowable weapons are Gauss, Autocannon(of all flavors), and Rifle weapons. The specific list is in TacOps.

BattleTechnology #13 had infantry mortar rules. Basically a foot platoon had six rounds, they had a range of 5, and dealt 5 damage. However, against a Mech they rolled on the Punch table, making them pretty effective. Limited special munitions (Inferno, Smoke, Tear Gas, and Nerve Gas) were allowed.
