The Black Thorns
« on: 03 February 2013, 12:15:59 »
Whatever happened to the Black Thorns.  I remember reading in FM Mercs Updates they left the world they were stationed on and disappeared.  I don't remember reading anything else.  Anyone know anything?

the Black Thorns were thrown a party for their hard work by the combine. who confused the confetti containers with Nukes. on the plus side you can buy the limited edition Black Thorns memorial plate today! each one authenticated and guaranteed to contain a minimum .0002 percent actual Black Thorn by volume! (intended as display item only. please do not remove memorial plate from protective radiation-proof case for first 800 years)

Well, this makes me rather sad.  I really liked the Black Thorns.  Then again, it does give me free license to make them as my own now in the post Jihad era.

I always liked the fact TPTB just plain forgot the Black Thorns were on Galedon and just rolled with there destruction without coming up some stupid scenario were they saved themselves at the last minute somehow.

For some time I wondered if at that fateful day they weren't doing educational trip into disasterproof bunker of the Galedon Military District and won't show up again. Luckily, they are really gone.

Why I actually think of it as one of the better deaths of the jihad, it wasn't a unit simply getting written off but a consequence of the WMD warfare.

No they were having the annual unit picnic in a open field that day.  ;)

My guess is no one could come up with a believable scenario where they not only survive, but also come out with several hundred tons of clan equipment again.

Oh that's easy, there base was a old underground bunker that the Combine had also used to store captured but unrepaired Clan Mechs, also stored in mothballed Overlord Dropships that only needed to be refueled and resupplied and were kept in underground launch pads. Now while Galedon's surface was persona non grata the Black Thorns could an did scrounge up the needed resources to launch there dropship fleet. They rendezvoused with a Jumpship in orbit willing to take on passengers from Galedon ignoring the signs saying "AVOID! DEATH HERE" and took the Black Thorns to Galatea were they lived happily ever after.  :D

No, no!  Believable!  They rendezvous with a Leviathan II WarShip in orbit which rounds out their TO&E.  And they announce that the unit's official new uniform consists of diminuitive red thongs (D.R.T.)
"We have made of New Avalon a towering funeral pyre and wiped the Davion scourge from the universe.  Tikonov, Chesterton and Andurien are ours once more, and the cheers of the Capellan people nearly drown out the gnashing of our foes' teeth as they throw down their weapons in despair.  Now I am made First Lord of the Star League, and all shall bow down to me and pay homa...oooooo! Shiny thing!" - Maximillian Liao, "My Triumph", audio dictation, 3030.  Unpublished.

They were already in the process of pulling out to finally join the Northwind Highlanders before the first people fell sick, just the DCMS didn't notice because of the fighting on-world. The Blakist blockade of Northwind leaves them stranded, so they decide to raid a nearby Blakist held world running into another mercenary unit top-heavy with Clan-tech whose the Thorns proceed to roll. Jeremiah loses his Masakari in the battle and is forced to switch to a Daishi.

no, they were Dead Right There on Galedon.  Unless zombies come into the CBT universe, in which case I nominate the Blackened Thorns as the first protag unit.

Suddenly I want to hear the words "Bring me the head of Badicus O'Shea" for some reason.  And in a major plot-relevant way.

Yeah, but unless they've got Hardened or Ferro-Laminar armor, a gauss shot will still blow their heads clean off their shoulders.  ;)
