(Research) Artillery flak attack range
« on: 22 July 2020, 22:45:12 »
Artillery flak attacks mostly follow the direct fire artillery rules.  Direct fire artillery may not engage targets more then 17 hexes away.

Aerospace units add 2 hexes of range per altitude.

Does an aerospace units altitude count against that 17 hex range?

I've always assumed it doesnt, since there are range modifiers built into the flak attack based on the targets altitude.

Direct fire and Flak Artillery rules are on pg 185 TacOps.

Ground units attacking Airborne Aerospace units, determining range.  pg 107 TW

One of the key phrases is in the direct fire rules,

"the target hex must be no more then seventeen hexes away"
This isn't referencing range directly, instead its setting up a sphere of affect.

The reason I bring this up is because Megamek 47.7 is including altitudes as part of the range, an interpretation different from my own.  This is actually the source of a number of my questions this year.

Bump.

Another point of confusion is the +3 modifier for altitude 10.
Which implies that the artillery has the range to reach that high.  (How I don't know since no LOS exists between a ground unit and an airborne unit at altitude 9 or 10 (pg 99 TW)

If each altitude costs 2 hex's of range, then artillery could only fire up to altitude 8 anyways. (17-8x2)

If Artillery is able to cover a 17 hex bubble up to altitude 10, I suppose you could fluff it as less firing at a unit, and more putting a wall of flak in the way of where we guess you might be.  Cant see you, but radar is giving us a good guess where your flight path should be.

There was errata implemented in the most recent printing of TO:AR (see the errata doc).

Does that resolve all your issues here?  Don't want to close this out without knowing.  Thanks.
