Mini-StuG
« on: 12 February 2022, 12:19:25 »
So I've been playing around with Artillery Cannons for a while now.  This time, I challenged myself to going as cheap as possible (outisde of an infantry Field Gun version, of course).  Turns out you can fit a Thumper Artillery Cannon into a Heavy APC chassis if you drop the engine a bit.  Going with tracks instead drops the speed and increases the cost.

The stug used the panzer 3 chassis right?  Maybe a 25 ton scorpion as the host vehicle for the mini-stug?

The StuG III used the Panzer III chassis, and the StuG IV used the Panzer IV chassis.  I went for "minii" because this weighs less than those...  ^-^

artillery cannons are good options for unskilled gunners !

Never tried but probably a swarm of these is very effective against fast targets if you concentrate fire.

Absolutely!  You don't get the -4 for an unmoving hex, but you ALSO don't take TMMs...  ^-^

Errata here, page 50 says you don't apply the -4 for artillery cannons.

Isn't the artillery cannon more like a stuH or sturm gun?  Not that it is a bad gun, just not the right kind of gun for a Stug I feel.

depends on the model, the first StuG IIIs had a short barrel 50mm gun to fire HE shells against soft targets - it is pretty much an artillery cannon. It became an anti-tank vehicle later during the WWII

I think the AOE damage is what makes the difference.  I'm on the side that thinks an Artillery Cannon fits a StuG design (of course)...  :)

Early StuG III had the short barreled 75mm, the 50mm (in the medium barreled L/42 and long L/60 versions) was installed in mid-war turreted PzKw III tanks and used as an anti tank gun (PaK 38).

Indeed, the 50mm short barreled can be found in the early Panzer III and the StugG III allowed for a 75mm fire support gun.
