Which is kind of the point, though I may actually cut back on some of those just to cut back on fire control, and break them into more bays so they are actually more effective.
To cheat on Fire control, put your Capital weapons into Fore-left, Fore-right, Aft-left, and Aft-right arcs and your non-capital weapons into Nose, Left Broadside, Right Broadside, and Aft arcs. Your main concern is that the Nose and Aft arcs have to cover 120 degrees each, while the Broadside arcs only have to cover 60 degrees each.
The N/LBS/RBS/A arcs allow for 360 coverage vs ASF, while the Nose L/R and Aft L/R allow decent coverage by capital weapons. Each of these arcs covers 120 degrees, meaning the Broadside arcs are the only ones that have coverage from the Nose and Aft arcs of that side.
If you have additional room you might toss extra weapons into the Capital arcs, but try to avoid going over 20 weapons in your Capital weapon arcs. If you have to go over 20 weapons, make sure to put as many of your smaller weapons in the other arcs as possible to reduce the Fire Control tonnage penalty.
Fire Control Tonnage penalty is if there are too many weapons in that arc you take the number of weapons in that arc over the limit, divide it by the limit, multiply that by .1, multiply that by the mass of all the weapons in that arc (not ammunition), and round that final result up to the nearest half ton.
So if you have 20
HNGauss in that arc then the total mass of the weapons is 140,000 tons (ammunition is not counted) and there are only 20 weapons so the Fire Control limit is not exceeded. But adding a single Machine gun brings you up to 21 weapons for a total mass of 140,000.5 tons. As 21 is over 20, you have to do the math. 21-20 = 1, divided by 20 is .05. You then multiply .05 by .1, giving .005. You then multiply that by 140,000.5, giving 700.0025. This is rounded up to the nearest half ton, resulting in 700.5 tons of Fire Control equipment needed.
Adding a second Machine Gun changes the math to: 140,001 tons @ 22 weapons, 22-20 = 2, 2/20 = .1, .1*.1 = .01, .01*140,001 = 1400.01, 1400.01 -> 1400.5 tons of Fire Control Tonnage. All because you wanted to add two more Machine Guns to that arc.
You see why you want to keep the number of weapons below 20 where possible.
