TH-10 LiteCrane - light flying crane (a tribute)
« on: 16 June 2023, 10:06:46 »
Fooling around on wikipedia, I stumbled upon the Mil Mi 10, the Soviet flying crane. One thing let to another and I ended up with a tiny flying crane, just powerful enough to transport a standard 10 ton container.

Consider this a tribute to Giovanni Blasini's Project Shipping Container. A helicopter that can be transported in a ten ton container and can carry such a container itself. (Also known as abusing the lifting hoist rules)

This has been officially adopted into Project Shipping Container.  I absolutely love it.  We’re you thinking of a conventional layout like real sky cranes, or something more sci-fi and fanciful with that fusion engine like the Tonbo or Bishop?

Haven’t had the opportunity to see an Mi-10 before, but there’s an S-64 Skycrane that periodically operates from my nearby airport.  They’re a sight to behold.

I was thinking a conventional design helicopter design, but what ever mental image works for you. The fusion engine is only there, because it's the only thing that allows it to move a container at a somewhat reasonable speed. Glad you like it!

Nicely done!

Would dropping to BAR 5 armor increase the points enough to be worth it?  ???

Good idea! It would bring it up by three points to the maximum. It'll also drop the cost by 900 C-Bills, from 165,917 to 165,083.

Either way, don't expose it to enemy fire.  ;D

Very true!  ;D

Playing around in SAW, it would appear to be possible to do it as a Combat Vehicle.  With the Illegal Quirk, you could put 3/4 of a ton of BAR 5 on it for 23 points (though the sixth point on the nose won't save it from a Medium Pulse).  The cost would be around 230K, but it would also move 7/11... :)

I hadn't even thought about using a military-grade VTOL  :o

But sure, more speed is always welcome, especially when it's going to get slowed down by the container anyway....
