Question, can you pick up and carry your own tanks?
« on: 16 February 2025, 10:00:57 »
I've a funny idea to pick up and carry my SRM/LRM carriers to circumvent their poor movement. Are there rules for this? Is it even allowed? I know you can pick up other battlemechs with dragging rules or just straight up.

I think it’s the same as hand-held weapons, maximum tonnage/10. Otherwise you need to load them as cargo.

Thought I just realized you could make a tiny trailer mounting a single LRM5 that could be carried by a medium mech and deployed at the start of a fight.

Yeah unfortunately you can't pick them up however as mentioned above feel free to have a hover caddy for handhelds. The other option would be external cargo but you'd be looking at a trailer or equivalent and that wouldn't really be any faster

There is a Special Ability which can improve that lift capacity by 50%, but that still isn't much (For the mathers, Tonnage/7.5).

An Atlas isn't going to be moving a Behemoth around any quicker than the Behemoth could get their on its own.  For those Vehicles which an Atlas CAN carry, it would only help in situations where they are going up/down a LOT of Level Changes, and most Hovercraft of that weight are still better off on their own.

Although, now that I think of it, it would be one way to possibly prevent them from targeting the carried tank.  Useful for when that Hovercraft is hit and loses the ability to move, but you want to preserve the crew.

You would have to be in a SERIOUSLY BIG & FAST mech to pull off carrying a 60 ton tank faster than it can drive on it's own.

At long last, we know the true use case for the Charger.
Some places remain unknown because no one has gone there.  Others remain unknown because no one has come back.

With its one hand...

not to mention it is holding a .5 ton laser pistol in that hand (right, which is fluff/art ... but should have been forearm mounted).

This thread immediately brought to mind the scene where Roy picks up Rick's vertitech cockpit for transport.

There is the scene in A Skulk of Foxes where a main character’s Tiburon picks up and briefly moves another character’s armored SUV.

This sounds like a job for a Tonbo.

Or a Garrot. They can lift 60 tons, thanks to four lift hoists. The 20-ton Stronghold gun trailer carries a LAC-5, MG, two vehicle grenade launchers, and has a 4-ton infantry bay, hardly slowing the (already slow) Garrot down. Mind you, you can put Bulldog LRMs on every mesa top, given time to prepare. Just don't try it in LoS of the other side.

Just make a TSM 'Mech with Lift Hoists instead of Hands.

If you made a 30-ton light with triple strength myomer (and shut off enough heat sinks to use it), a 390-rated Engine, and two Lift Hoists instead of hands you could haul an SRM carrier pretty fast.

- Lift Hoist ='Mech can carry half it's tonnage (x2 for two hoists = its full tonnage) with a -1 MP penalty (pg. 136 in my TW)
- TSM with Lift Hoist = double the above, but if a 'Mech carries more than its tonnage, it has -2 MP (Pg 137 in my TW)
- 390 engine in a 30 tonner = 13/19 movement
- -2 MP= 11/17

so you could carry an SRM carrier 17 hexes at a run

EDIT:
You could carry it slightly faster with a 30-ton hovercraft:
- 4 Lift Hoists (carries 60 tons): 12 tons
- 3 tons of lift gear
- 15 ton engine (rated 350) gives you 16 cruise mp, down to 14 if carrying 60 tons, so you'd be a 14/21.
