AFFS High Command : Commandos and Commanders
« on: 07 May 2013, 02:02:09 »
A new iteration is due, as the old one has run  its course past 40 pages.
http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php/topic,22098.msg674507.html#new

All cheer the new thread! I need something to cheer for, as it appears the weather will be very grey for the year's first foray to the beaches...  ;)

Just finished Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. If you have 15 bucks it is well worth the money; it is to 80s action movies what Saint's Row the Third was to GTA.

What about that one British Major who would charge German lines with little more than a kilt and a broadsword? It's probably left as a mystery, but the possibility certainly exists.

Lieutenant Colonel Jack Churchill is a man who shall always be remembered for running into battle with a crossbow, broadsword, and bagpipes.

400 years ago, sure.  Afrikaans is a mix of Dutch, Low German, Portugese and French.  The language and people are different enough that I would not call them Dutch...

But the word Kommando was first used to describe the mounted light infantry engaging in irregular warfare during the Boer Wars.

I was rather having a certain Scot in mind when I titled the topic...

It was his personal piper, Bill Millin, who was the only one in the unit who went ashore in his kilt during the D-Day landings, armed only with his bagpipes and a knife. A few years ago I listened to an interview recorded with Millin, who said that he went ashore in his father's kilt, which was actually his second-best kilt, because he was worried about damaging his best kilt, and that when Lovat saw men hugging cover rather than advancing off the beach, he ordered Millin to play to gee them up. He said that if Millin was scared, he could always "walk up and down a bit" - and that Millin's piping got a range of responses from the troops, a number of which were inventively profane. Millin came across as an amusing but very modest gent. Makes you wonder what the enemy thought of him, though...

It's more interesting than optimal, and therefore better. O0 - Weirdo

Supposedly, his father had worn the same kilt at Flanders during WWI.  I've heard German snipers neglected to shoot him because they thought he was insane.

Indeed. He also kept faithfully comin to celebrations in Normandy for quite some time, and when he passed away a few years ago, his death made headlines in the news. Some younger people may have been surprised but no one who'd watched The Longest Day was  :)

Nice movie was the Longest Day. My favorite character from the movie was the British Juno Beachmaster, Captain Colin Douglas Maud (DSO, DSC). Shame that they changed his dog from a Collie to a Bulldog. Fun fact: Captain Maud was a technical advisor for the movie and lent his shillelagh, the very one he used at D-Day, to the actor that protrayed him in the movie for his scenes.

Since a lot of people here don't go north very often I just thought I'd say I've updated my Conventional Infantry Platoon Creation spread sheet and posted links in this thread:

British commandos and commanders, how fortuitous, because today I was thinking about writing a story involving the SLDF's 59th Jump Infantry Division...

How would I submit such a story, and would I be able to add the other four regiments that weren't named in the SLDF Field Manual?

There's a link at the bottom of the battlecorps homepage with guidelines for submissions.  You probably would be able to name the regiments as long as they aren't named anywhere else, I would guess.

By the way, it's amazing but I don't think it needs to be seen in 3d
