Did you do the cotillion on the Intrepid?

I do want to visit every ship I can. Though living as far inland as I do does limit things a bit...

Hopefully, you have at the least gotten to the USS Lexington and Texas on the coast of our state, Weirdo.

Lexington once, Texas multiple times. Also been to the Seawolf park in Galveston(I forget the names of the ships there), as well as the Alabama. Also went aboard a destroyer in Baton Rouge, though it's been an extremely long time, and I forget the name of that ship now.

If you ever get a chance, go see the North Carolina.  I've seen her and it's amazing at how well preserved she remains.  I was able to enter the forward 16" turret ("A" Turret, IIRC), one of the 5" DP turrets, the bridge, the pilot house, CIC and the 40mm Bofor quad mounts were open as well as the smaller single and double 20mm mounts.  There were several other sections of the ship open as well, including the crew berthing, mess hall and infirmary, but I didn't get to take that part of the tour due to the time involved.

Especially interesting was the fact that the North Carolina had a Kingfisher spotter plane on one of the catapults.  The canopy was sealed, naturally enough, but if you'd had the desire I'm pretty sure you could have looked into the cockpit fairly easily.

Finally, as a part of the 16" gun display, the museum had placed a 16" shell on the deck outside of the armored barbette beneath turret "B".  Standing on it's end, it easily measured over 4' high and, according to the sign next to it, weighed in at just under 1200 lbs.  It was impressive, to say the least.

USS Kidd. Its really fun to be on deck during the 4th of July celebration when they fire off the guns.!

I really need to write down a list of all of these ships. That way I can arrange "little" detours on road trips, or plan trips around seeing multiple ships.

It's strange but I have been abord more active ships than meuseum ones.

I've Seen HMCS Ottawa, USCGC Midget,  The NOAAS McArther, and the ex-USCGC Fir then being used as a traing vessal by the USNSC in Seattle.

The only meuseum on I can rember yas an ex Sovit Foxtrot that was in Vancouver, and is now at the Maritime Museum of San Diego.

I don't think they do it any longer, but at one time they had a Fourth of July fireworks and gunnery show on the North Carolina as well, although I never got to see it in person.  I've seen pictures though and it's something that I wish I had gotten a chance to see.

I do know that they fire one of the 4-inch guns some times on the Haida in Hamilton. I need to go see her if I am ever out that way.

During the 4th of July events they fire off the guns on the USS Kidd, sometimes in a mock battle against an old fighter.

I have seen the North Carolina.  Went with my folks when I was a youngster.  Walked around inside.  I must have been very young, because I don't remember feeling cramped.

Considering I have lived in the state for over a decade and being a bit of a history buff, I made it a priority to see the North Carolina awhile back. Definitely worth seeing if one is in the area.

Also got to see the Yorktown down in South Carolina some time ago. Beautiful ship.

Yeah, I saw it on Saturday. Although I think the 3-D was pretty well done, actually.

As for visiting ships...New Jersey is about 20 minutes from me -pretty impressive. I should go check out Intrepid the next time I go up to New York.

Brian DM, long time no see.  Are you back, or am I?

Say, upstairs they're talking about a new BF-scale game or something.  Do I have that right?

I live on the Iowa/Illinois border. There is no ships nearby, but when I was a kid I did the U-505 tour in Chicago. And there is some tanks to look at on the Rock Island Arsenal.

The USS Razorback (SS-394, Balao-class) is on exhibit about 35 miles from where I live, berthed in the Arkansas River across from the state capital.  It is not, contrary to popular local belief, named for the University of Arkansas mascot, but for a type of whale.  Which makes a lot more sense for a submarine.  But we bought it in 2004 because of the name, nonetheless.

Well we are planning to go to Kentucky and then up to Michigan later this summer. Don't know of any ships in those areas, except for the USS Silversides(which I'm definitely planning to visit).

Take the steam ferry SS Badger from Ludington to Manitowoc and see USS Cobia (SS-245) and the Wisconsin Maritime Museum.

Will have to see how far Ludington is from our destination, but that might be interesting indeed...

It would be a couple of days, most likely. Ludington is 1 hour north of Muskegon, but it's 4 hours across the lake.

Actually going to be pretty close to Muskegon(Fremont), but I'm not sure if my wife would be up for the trip.

As for visiting ships...New Jersey is about 20 minutes from me -pretty impressive.
About eight years ago (July '05) I was promoted to Major forward of Turret No. 1 (see photo).  About a year earlier I was in Alameda, CA and went to a promotion aboard the USS HORNET.  Probably where I got the idea.
Say, upstairs they're talking about a new BF-scale game or something.  Do I have that right?
Are your referring to Alpha Strike?  I thought it was a stand alone version of Quick Strike.  I'm probably wrong.

Is it only a British tradition that Marines man the aft turrets then?

We pulled Marines off of ships, at least the cruiser/destroyer Navy, in the '90s.  I couldn't tell you what their role was at the time.

So marines in the US are now completely divorced from their origins as shipboard security and boarding troops?

Looks like, yeah. Not sure if there aren't any Marines left on carriers, or if those stationed aboard transport ships don't perform those older duties while aboard.
