Carrier wings frequently have an attached Marine Strike Fighter squadron, though.

The Marines do have units that can deploy quickly for additional security, but it's normally sailors who do standard security and boarding. Mind you, they go through a good bit of training, but it's not as threatening as saying there are US Marines preparing to board!

Also, every combatant ship the U. S. Navy has built, with the exception of USS Long Beach (CGN-9), since the end of the World War II programs has been of a destroyer derivation. Which means no Marine Detachment.

Took me a moment to realize what you meant by destroyer derivation, fortunately before I started listing things like the Tico class. :-[

...Are carriers destroyer derived, or does the aforementioned Marine squadron count? (Or does the Navy simply not care about that anymore?)

The Marine Detachments were part of the ship's company and 'belonged' to the ship's captain.  Tactical Air Integration (TAI) is the program that puts a Hornet squadron in some Carrier Air Wings, I forget which model Cs or Ds.  MEUs are a seperate task force embarked aboard amphibious ships...they work for the Fleet Commander in conjunction with the Amphibious Squadron Commander.  There are some Marines as ship's personnel but they are typically combat cargo or air officer types.

Not speaking for the Service, but I think this is one case where absence doesn't make the heart grow fonder.  Too many Surface types don't understand the value a dedicated Landing Force can give them.  The same goes for Marines that have never been underway.  Just my opinion though.

No, but then Carriers aren't surface combatants with a blackshoe as the CO.

Yeah, and the whole thing about having a dedicated landing force that belongs to the ship's CO, go to CDR Salamader and look at some of his posts on it. As well as an ongoing LCS Delnada Est! theme.

Brown shoes or Black shoes, it doesn't matter.  There used to be a time when a Naval Officer's weird-shitometer went off and he'd look to the nearest Gunny or serviceable equivalent to return things to an acceptable norm.  Now that reaction is limited to Marine Officers.  Frankly, I see that as a bummer for all parties.

That was a case of saving force structure and if I recall correctly the Commandant that made that decision was the first to not have a posting as a MarDet Commander on a cruiser or battleship.  I do not recall correctly, he wasn't the first but he wasn't a MarDet Commander.

So, if you're in the States, how are you observing this Memorial Day weekend?

Big Battletech game on Sunday with a buddy who moved to LA some time back but is in town for a few days. No clue yet what's happening Monday.

Enjoy!  We're doing our best to do nothing.  Since mid-April we've been knee deep in birthdays, anniversaries, or focused on buying/building a new house.

Well two of three isn't bad.  "MSc application"?  Is that Master of Surgery or something else?

MSc is just Masters of Science but I'm applying for one in Medical Leadership. Apparently it's really Organisational Psychology but the college (Birkbeck College of the Univeristy of London) has the best organisational psych faculty in the country and it is also backed by the Royal College of Physicians of London

Ah, now I understand.  I've been toying with the idea of pursuing a PhD when/as I retire.  A couple of folks I know have done so but I'm not certain it will be in the cards for me.  Depending on when I retire, be it in two years or closer to four, I may need to get right into the work force rather than take more time for schooling.

This will be part time while I work over 2-3 years

The tough parts will be 1) getting in and 2) paying for it  :-\

Ain't that the truth.

Speaking of money and in particular the wasting of it, did anyone else dive into the Robotech RPG Kickstarter?

I got in just enough to get the Spartan pack, so whenever they ship stuff, it'll net me a pair each of Unseen Archers and Longbows.

Well, I've achieved a haircut and discovered there was a murder in Town earlier which is exciting (and clearly sad) but got to see all of the forensic scientists really wearing the noddy suits

Off for a run soon and then it's just a few chores and the the day will not only be done but also done according to plan!

Yeah, I've been trying to figure out just how Battletech I want my Robotech to be.  There's part of me that wants to be true to the new game while the other part of me realizes that I'll only paint some of them at some later date.  Probably...well maybe.  Regardless, how much do I want to spend towards a game I may never play (looks at Flames of War, X-Wing board game, egads Battletech).  Wow, I suck at the hobby stuff.
Off for a run soon...
Run Dan, run!

Nice arrangement.

We have had it for about 30 years now. The only real difference is that in the past 5 he learned Karate so I have to add the "be nice" in now.

I managed to run 5km when I only set out to run 4km. It was slow (total time 32 mins, only my last lap was sub 6 mins) but not bad for having not run 5km for... ever? And today was my first day off for 12 days too

Run again tomorrow!

Now all I have to do is washing up...

closer to 7 years on the karate, and I need a new credit card for the kickstarter, my $100 prepaid didn't go through. So I need to pick one up this weekend and dive back in to the pledge manager to get my stuff

Dan, did you run today?  I skipped it in favor of dragging the wife and the boy out for walk.  Well, she walked while I pushed...the stroller.

I've nearly convinced myself to add $10 to $50 more just to cover gaming minutiae like decals, dice, as well as another set of Destroids...er...Warhammers after I get my Crusaders and unnammed ECM Wasp/Stinger/Phoenix Hawk contraption.

Yep, managed another 5k although it was as slow as a slow thing but Rosie managed the same so that's very nice

Tomorrow I won't be running! (Blisters and off for a pub lunch +/- walk with parentals and wife)

Good for you guys!

This weekend was meant to be spent doing little to nothing, which I achieved, but stressed the Hell out of my wife.  The MiL's influence has been noticeable this weekend.

We were starting to see a nice May until March decided to show up for a few days.  Unfortunately, we're about to make a jump to early July and skip June altogether.  Here comes the hot and humid.

General view over here is that we're skipping summer altogether and going straight into autumn although somehow we've had nice and sunny all 3 days of the long weekend!
