The Clans don't build, they conquer.

If they realized just how little war they'd actually GET out of conquering the Inner Sphere (as of tribble 60), and how much reconstruction they'd have to do, they'd never bother with the Inner Sphere, and stay at home.

Given the Clans did have some intel from the Inner Sphere even without the Dragoons, the ripples would have reached them too.

Quite possibly they heard from periphery traders that 'no one goes to the Inner Sphere, it's too plague-ridden' and the Crusaders are laughed at for wanting to go back to the poisoned, irradiated wastelands.

Tribble 61

Heeding his son's advice, Minoru continues his campaign and marches onto New Avalon in 2797. Jinjiro arrives first and captures the planet; however, his mental instability results in the ordering of every last Davion within reach be executed for crimes against the Combine which creates a power vacuum inside the Federated Suns. Taking advantage of this, the Capellan Confederation throws everything it has at the Suns and seizes hundreds of worlds. With the Federated Suns ceasing to be a threat, Minoru defies military logic to consolidate his gains and instead looks to capture Terra; but he his delayed by the other Successor States inside the Terran Corridor.

Taking advantage of the Delay, Comstar prepares a defense to meet the Combine by raiding every last Star League Cache it can as well as press all of the warships in their secret fleet. It even reactivates the Reagan SDS, thus bringing a large number of Casper Drones online to bolster its defenses. Comstar also prepares an interdiction against the Combine once it attacks Terra.

Minoru dies in 2799 and Jinjiro assumes the throne, continuing his father's campaign. After successfully throwing the other Successor States out of the Terran Corridor, Jinjiro decides to throw one last grand offensive at taking Terra even though his armies are at the near shatter point and unaware of Comstar's prepared defense due to the activities of ROM. On January 1st 2800, Combine Forces enter Terra Space in mass, only to meet an extraordinary defense by Comstar; at the same time, a complete interdiction is placed in the Combine putting the nation in a Black Out. While Combine troops do land on Terra itself, the vast majority of them are slaughtered within hours of landfall by the Star League equipped ComGuard.

Jinjiro himself is killed during an ambush near Geneva and most of his Generals are lost over Terra itself when their Dropships are shot down by Caspers. Taking advantage of the chaos in the Combines armies, Comstar wipes out or captures every last bit of enemy equipment within Sol before a general retreat is ordered. The Combine troops that make it out of Terra are few in number and are eventually destroyed by the end of 2801.

With the Combine's Armies practically gone, the Lyrans, CC, and FWL launch their own campaigns to take advantage of the situation even though their own forces are exhausted. The Capellans drive further into the defunct FS, capturing a number of worlds and even taking New Avalon from the Combine in 2803. The Lyran's drive puts them near Luthan but is too exhausted to take the planet itself; Loki is however successful in assassinating a number of Kurita's which causes infighting in the Draconis Combine leadership. The FWL drives the remaining Combine troops from the Terran Corridor, sidestepping a number of worlds that Comstar seized in an attempt to create a buffer around Terra.

By 2810, a truce is called that ends the First Succession War with the Federated Suns and Combine practically a fragment of their former selves.

To End is to Begin; therefore there are no Endings, only Beginnings

Not sure if this counts as a tribble or not but this seems like the best place to put it, feel free to use it if you wish.

Tribble 62?

Our current campaign started in 3049, has reached 3056 so far, and has diverged from Cannon in a couple of ways. I'm going to try to paste in a timeline of whats happened so far, the earliest years see few changes and the divergence kicks off from 3052.

Rise of the Lycans!

Leo Showers - Ilkhan
Ulric Kerensky - Wolf Kakhan Alpha Galaxy Commander
Garth Radick - Wolf Sakhan Beta Galaxy Commander
????? - Wolf Loremaster
Mikel Furey - Gamma Galaxy Commander
Conal Ward - Delta Galaxy Commander

3049
Cyrilla Ward begins countering Conal Wards influence over Vladimir [Ward] by arranging for Ulric Kerensky to add him to the Golden Keshik.
Vladimir [Ward] head caps Phelan Kell on The Rock.

3050
Leo Showers dies at the Battle of Radstadt.
Natasha Kerensky returns to Wolves from the Dragoons.

3051
Ulric Kerensky replaces Leo Showers as  Ilkhan.

Ulric Kerensky retains the Golden Keshik as his Praetorians.
Mikel Furey's Gamma Galaxy routs the Gunzburg Eagles in the Christmas Eve Massacre.

3052
Battle of Tukkayyid - Wolves defeat Comstar Guards; Jade Falcons and Ghost Bears draw with Comstar Guards; Smoke Jaguars, Nova Cats, and Steel Vipers are defeated by Comstar Guards. Comstar Guards win 4 - 2 and Truce of Tukkayyid commences.
Garth Radick dies leading Beta Galaxy on Tukkayyid.
Natasha Kerensky replaces Garth Radick as Wolf Kakahn.
Conal Ward replaces Natasha Kerensky as Wolf Sakhan.
Mikel Furey replaces Conal Ward as Wolf Loremaster.
Erik Kerensky promoted to command Beta Galaxy.
Star Captain Hermod [Fetladral]{Genefather Jon Vickers, Genemother Elise Fetladral} slays a Com Guard descended from the not-named clan at Tukkayyid, undertakes a Bloodright Quest, and earns the right to found the Wolf Bloodhouse.
Star Captain Daenerys [Tarr]{Genefather Jerome Winson, Genemother Georgina Tarr} promoted to Star Colonel, transferred to Wolf Watch as Deputy-Director and tasked with supporting the Loremaster in reinvigorating that moribund organisation. Her first action is to declare and win a Trial of Possession for complete sets of SLDF Intelligence Command and Special Forces Command manuals from the Goliath Scorpions.
Cyrilla Ward commits suicide to make her bloodname available to Vladimir [Ward]. Vladimir [Ward] wins Cyrilla Ward's bloodname without killing any of his opponents although all require reconstructive surgery.
Lara Ward and John Ward promoted to Galaxy Commanders of 2nd line Galaxies.
Marco Hall promoted to Star Colonel commanding 13th Wolf Guards.
Katya Kerensky promoted to Star Colonel commanding 279th Battle Cluster.
Vladimir Ward promoted to Star Colonel commanding 11th Wolf Guards.
Ranna [Kerensky] transferred to command the Golden Keshik; she defeats several trials by those opposed to the idea of an unblooded commander of the Golden Keshik.
The Homeworld clans pass a motion in the Grand Council requiring the six Invader clans to relocate entirely (except for their Strana Mechty Enclaves) to their Occupation Zones by the end of the Truce of as punishment for their collective failure at Tukkayid. The motion also requires the Invader Clans to turn their occupation zones into a staging area for Operation Revival 2 which will be undertaken by the Homeworld Clans. The Jade Falcons, Nova Cats, Smoke Jaguars, and Steel Vipers demand trials of refusal. The Steel Vipers win their Trial of Refusal the rest are defeated.
Ulric Kerensky places Erik Kerensky in charge of implementing Operation Normandy Phase 1; the relocation of the Wolves most valuable homeworld assets to the Wolf Clan Occupation Zone.

3053
Hermod [Fetladral] returns from the first successful Bloodright Quest in Clan History and is recognised as Hermod Wolf; the Founder of the Wolf Bloodhouse.
Hermod Wolf promoted to Star Colonel commanding 24th Wolf Rangers on Weingarten. He makes extensive use of the SLDF Special Forces Command manuals acquired by Daenerys Tarr in restructuring the 24th Wolf Rangers training regime.
Daenerys [Tarr] wins Bloodname by analysing and exploiting the weaknesses in her opponents combat styles.

3054
Ranna promoted to Star Colonel in Alpha Galaxy; she defeats several trials by those opposed to the idea of an unblooded Star Colonel in Alpha Galaxy.
Project Shieldwall begins establishing 15 Armoured Infantry Clusters for garrison and security duties by reorganising, standardising, and expanding (using lower caste volunteers) the Wolves Provisional Garrsion Clusters.

3055
Conal Ward supports the Red Corsair by allowing her to operate out of a Wolf controlled system and by allowing her to trial for supplies from Wolf units.
Mikel Furey's Gamma Galaxy beats back the Kell Hounds attempt to pursue the Red Corsair into the Wolf Clan Occupation Zone. Before succumbing to wounds inflicted by Cat Wilson Mikel Furey grants Hegira to the Kell Hounds. Mikel Furey also records a message for Wolf Watch ordering that in any future engagement with the Kell Hounds headhunter stars should be used to acquire bondsmen of the Kell bloodline.
Erik Kerensky's Beta Galaxy destroys the Red Corsair's forces; evidence recovered indicates the Red Corsair originated with the Jade Falcons and reveals Conal Wards involvement. A Crusader contemptuous of political scheming, Erik Kerensky calls out Conal Ward in the Wolf Clan Council and kills him in a Trial of Grievance. Erik Kerensky replaces Conal Ward as Wolf Sakhan.
Katya Kerensky promoted to Command Gamma Galaxy.
Vladimir Ward promoted to Command Delta Galaxy.
Dalk Carns replaces Mikel Furey as Wolf Loremaster.

3056
Hermod Wolf promoted to Command Pi Galaxy; the last of the Wolf's Galaxies to adopt the new Type 20 Galaxy pattern.
The officers of the 24th Wolf Rangers score highly in testing for command positions within Pi Galaxy, a fact which is attributed to their additional training using SLDF Special Forces Command methods.

3057
Ulric Kerensky's emissaries initiate Operation Normandy Phase 2 and begin trading the Wolves Homeworlds enclaves for resources they will need in the inner sphere.

3058
Wolf Watch Deputy-Director Star Colonel Daenerys Tarr and Galaxy Commander Hermod Wolf present evidence to the Wolf Clan Council implicating Loremaster Dalk Carns and others in conspiring with elements of the Jade Falcon Clan to supplant the Wolf Clans leadership.
Dalk Carns is executed for Treason.
Katya Kerensky replaces Dalk Carns as Loremaster.

3059
Falcon War. The Wolves mobilise their entire Touman to punish the Falcons for meddling in Wolf affairs. The Falcons expected some form of retaliation from the Wolves but were unprepared for the sheer scale of the Wolf offensive. The Wolves rout the Falcons but stop short of destroying them, instead leaving them vulnerable to predation by other clans. The Wolves cannot afford excessive casualties and must be wary of opportunistic attacks by other clans while they are in the midst of relocating from the Homeworlds to the Inner Sphere.

Tribble 63

In 3049, a sudden surge of refugees from the Periphery reaches the Inner Sphere's borders of the Draconis Combine, Free Rasalhague Republic, and the Lyran half of the Federated Commonwealth. These refugees tell the tales of mysterious invaders weilding weapons and battlemechs that were far more advanced than anything they or the Inner Sphere ever had. When news of these refugees and their stories reach the ears of Comstar, Primus Myndo Waterly sends Anastasius Focht to get a better picture of what has happened in the Periphery. The news also reaches Jamie Wolfe, who immidiately recalls all the Dragoons from all operations to discuss the one thing they had feared would come true...the Clans have come. But instead of the first four Clans at the start of the invasion, only ONE clan is leading the invasion, much to even Natasha Kerensky's shock. The Clan in question, is Clan Smoke Jaguar alone.

Back in the Clan Homeworlds, when the Comstar Jumpship Outbound Light arrived in orbit of Huntress the Smoke Jaguars captured and interrogated the crew before executing them and destroying their vessel. With the information provided to them from the crew and from the ship's computers, the Smoke Jaguars believe that the time has come to invade the Inner Sphere by themselves instead of involving the other Clans. After the initial bids for the invasion corridors, the Jaguars gathered their entire touman in secret, withdrawing much from worlds shared with other Clans and preparing themselves for the long journey to the Inner Sphere. When news of the invasion reaches the Grand Council, they are outraged that the Smoke Jaguars did not inform them of this. In response to this, Clan Star Adder declares a Trial of Absorption of the Smoke Jaguars remaining worlds, including Huntress. These worlds fall quickly under the onslaught of the Star Adder forces and what remaining defenders become part of the Clan. Leo Showers ignores this news, gloating that the other Clans were cowards in not choosing to follow their example.

The moment the Jaguars reach the Inner Sphere, Federated Commonwealth, Rasalhague, and Draconis Combine forces are almost powerless to stop the Jaguars' blitzkrieg. When Anastasius Focht meets with the invaders, his jumpship is immediately destroyed. They also destroy HPG stations and ComStar defenders sending ripples of anger and shock to the Primus at the audacity these new invaders were showing. After months of fighting, the leaders of the three Successor States being invaded by the Jaguars agree to meet in a neutral location to discuss the possibility of an alliance against the Smoke Jaguars. To their surprise, Primus Myndo Waterly also sends a representative of ComStar to discuss the fact that the invaders have attacked ComStar forces as well as destroyed HPG stations. ComStar agrees to lend a hand in defending these worlds from the invaders. Over Radstadt, Tyra Miraborg rams her Shilone into the Smoke Jaguars flagship, killing both the Khan and SaKhan of the Smoke Jaguars as well as their Loremaster, forcing the Clan to halt their invasion so that they may choose who will lead them.

Taking advantage of this sudden halt, the Inner Sphere forces begin to launch offensive after offensive against the Smoke Jaguar defenders, driving many off of the worlds they have captured or wiping them out. The Smoke Jaguars were now in disarray and with no supply lines from the homeworlds and no solid leadership, they quickly fall to the Inner Sphere's counterattack. From what few prisoners the IS forces have managed to capture as well as the sudden revelation Jamie Wolfe provides them, they learn that not only the fact that the Smoke Jaguars were but one of several other Clans, but were also descendants of Kerensky's Star League Army. But after learning what the Clans were capable of, as well as learning their tactics and technology, the forces of the Inner Sphere prepare themselves for another possible invasion from the other Clans.

Tribble 64.

They say history can hinge on a single person, maybe two. In 3030, Victor Ian Steiner-Davion isn't the only child born to Hanse Davion and Melissa Steiner-Davion. His older sister Victoria Katherine Steiner-Davion is his twin sister, and the official heir. As they grow older, Victoria grows into a politically astute figure, while Victor thrives in battle simulations. Most are expecting Victor to become the Prince's Champion when Victoria takes the throne of Archon-Prince after her mandated five years of service in the AFFC.

That future seems in doubt when the Clans invade. Victoria has a string of horrifyingly bad luck and whatever unit she gets assigned keeps getting attacked by the Jade Falcons (read: Comstar feeding information to the Clans), and Victor has to keep riding to the rescue, just to keep her alive. After one such incident, where they had to play a shell game with their respective Victors to keep the Clanners guessing, they learn the Invasion has been stopped by a Raselhauge ASF doing a suicide run and killing the leader of the Clans.

Victor, recognizing that his big sister's role in the events to come, pleads with Victoria to accept a posting on Tharkad or New Avalon while he leads the charge against the Clans in future engagements. Victoria assents, and begins urging the citizens of the Federated Commonwealth to step up and fight the invaders. Victor, meanwhile, quickly becomes one of the most hated and feared sights a Clan Mechwarrior can see on the battlefield.

Can the Steiner-Davion Twins defeat the Clans, while fending off the machinations of ComStar and others who would like to see them fail?

Note: Katherine Morgan S-D would not exist in this idea.

Tribble #65

As the Succession Wars continue, a popular attitude begins to grip the Inner Sphere: Why the hell do we want the Star League back if it's just going to lead to more of this to decide who gets the moldy ol' throne, and also, doesn't ComStar own Terra? When the Peace Proposal of 3020 is made by Katrina Steiner, she is met with surprising acclaim from all of the other Houses, in so far of ending the war, but agreeing on reforming the League? Fat Chance.  In short, the Inner Sphere is war weary, and would rather settle into a cold war of sorts, and try to rebuild. Armies double and triple in size, mainly to deter the other guy, but the raids are done on a more deniable basis. Much of the fighting is now proxy wars in the Periphery, or destabilizing planetary governments along the border, and then swooping in with troops to "restore order". Mercenary units are now smaller, mainly because they have to be in this Inner Sphere where war is fought in the shadows, and nobody wants to spark the "big one".  Technology begins to improve as the infantryman, rather than the Battlemech now becomes the preferred tool of states..as 'Mechs aren't very deniable, unless they belong to mercs. But then, then the Clans show up? Trouble is, the Inner Sphere hasn't fought a real war in 30 years....and the Clans don't do proxy fights or insurgencies....

What the heck, they're coming to me:

Tribble 67

Simon Cameron somehow misses his date with destiny and that MinerMech. How isn't real important, what is important is this: He's alive. And who was the doer? Well, none other than Stefan Aramis. It seems Stefan was a bit more far sighted than many thought, and he realized that while his initial plan failed...he had others? Like remembering the old saying "the hand that rocks the cradle..." and arranges an accident for Simon's wife, and then has her replaced with a very accomplished courtesan from what Simon thinks is Lyons. It's actually Apollo, and she's Rim intelligence. Oh and did we mention her job is to play father AND son like a fiddle?

Tribble 68

Ian Davion survives Mallory's World and lives long enough to fail to take up Katrina's Peace Proposal (apparently bluntly suggesting a military alliance sealed by a wedding between Ian's nephew and Katrina's daughter didn't go very well).

Meanwhile Candace Liao persuades her father that it could be an opportunity if handled delicately and visits Tharkad, returning with a nascent Lyran-Capellan Alliance and a long term strategy: use LOKI and the Maskirova to keep the Snakes and the Suns pointed firmly at each other, and the Mariks squabbling with each other.

By the 3030s the Lyrans have used Capellan defensive know-how to secure their borders and Lyran advice on liberalisation is leading to a rapidly expanding Capellan economy as the two states set out to 'win the peace'.

Tribble 69

In 2784, the Terran Hegemony was in trouble. Kerensky had left, the Cameron Dynasty was dead, and the nation had the barest husk of a military, surrounded by nations it had subjugated for centuries. Following the exodus,   the Terran Hegemony continued rebuilding its economy and military infrastructure.

In 2786, the enimies were advancing, conquering every world they could. But the Terrans didn't give up. They knew they were in trouble, they knew that the time it would take to build Warships to defend their territory would take longer than they had.

But they also knew that they could build Dropships quickly, and in bulk.

In March 2787, the Pocket Warship program was implimented. Using the titanic orbital shipyards in the Terra system, along with the closer planets to Terra, the Hegemony began mass proudcing heavily armed dropships, armed with warship-scale missles, and sub-capital weapons. Because they were fighting a defensive war, the mobility of a true warship just wasn't needed as much as the ability to get as many ships as possible into the orbit of their worlds.

By 2811, the Terran Hegemony was a much reduced state, with a mere 40 systems. But those systems were in better condition than any other in the Inner Sphere- the Pocket Warships had held the line, keeping the planets safe from orbital bombardment, while the other nations burned. Their production capacity dawned the other states.

By 2821, when the rest of the galaxy was running out of mechs and ships to throw into the grinder, the Hegemony was in the exact opposite state, fresh and strong. Its shipyards finally had true Warships rolling off the production lines, complimented by the finest Aerospace Fighters known to man. (The Hegemony's ground Army wasn't exactly skilled, but it had enough advanced technology to make up for that. Mostly.) The Hegemony began reconquering its worlds, depending mostly on aerospace superiority and the good will of the population.

The Second Succession War lasted from 2821 until 2860, and unlike the First Succession war, which was marked by the 5 Successor States conquering everything they could, the Second Succession War was marked by a slow, unstoppable drive from Terra, as the Hegemony moved past retaking its own worlds and began conquering the Successor States.

Okay, that one is cool. By the time the Clans arrive, most of the Inner Sphere is under the Hegemony: humanity is united (mostly) under the one rule, even firmer than by the Star League. Still, it isn't what the Rememberence promised, so the Clans invade anyway ... and get hit in space by flotillas of WarShips and Pocket Warships ...  :D

Tribble 70 - One for the Dark Ages, to make them even darker.  }:)

Low hanging fruit are generally picked first, but sometimes are concealed behind the leaves and last far longer than they have any right too. Ice Hellions are a prime example of this, and there are plenty of others.
Attributed to Samantha Clees, Khan of Clan Jade Falcon, dated post 3090 - exact date unknown.

The Green Ghosts have for years been a mystery. A group of 'pirates' famed for hitting Interstellar Expeditions archaeological sites on Lyran, Falcon and periphery worlds the subject for far more rumours than facts. Known only to have been seeking 'something' since their first appearance, the Ghosts are often linked to Clintons Cutthroats and other mysteries by conspiracy mongers.

The truth when discovered would be horrifying to the Inner Sphere and Clans as a whole.

The truth of the Green Ghosts goes back to the Brotherhood of the Republic, a society founded in the 1st Succession War by a group of treasonous Lyran Nobles intent on rebirthing the Rim Worlds Republic. Comparable to the Black Dragon Society in the Draconis Combine, these Nobles were remarkably unhappy with Lyran handling of their periphery border. Long merely a treasonous secret society, this would change in the early 3060s when the group was discovered by the Word of Blake who believed that the group would be a useful catspaw for their future plans. The Word of Blake secretly provided substantial military equipment to the Society and encouraged them to use this secret military to stir up any Lyran sentiments on the Periphery Rim of the Alliance.

However others were also watching. Only a few years later, communications between the group and several members in the Jade Falcon occupation zone were intercepted by Clan Jade Falcon scientists. Rather than report this to the Clans warrior caste overseers, Scientist Ettienne saw the group as an excellent set of catspaws for his own goals, and blocked the reports from moving up the chain of command, and additionally funneled off additional military hardware and research groups into the hands of the Brotherhood.

Equipped now with an eclectic mix of Inner Sphere, Clan and Blakist caste offs, the Brotherhood founded the Green Ghosts. There aim was simple, to locate sufficient viable DNA to bring about the rebirth of House Amaris. The Blakists didn't care, this would work well for them, the Falcons would go nuts, the Lyrans would need to fight in their own backyard. Ettiennes group didn't care, this would once again prove the idiocy of the warriors of Clan Jade Falcon.

However some things don't go as planned, it would be late in the 3090s before sufficient DNA was located from two well-preserved ex-amaris's on a distant Periphery world, by then Ettienne was gone, the Blakists were gone. All that remained was an old Brotherhood, an experienced group of raiders, several regiments of hardware, rogue clan scientists, a few Blakist survivors, a lot of patience and a plan.

The start date for the rebirth of the Republic was finally given a date in the Brotherhood, August 7th 3132.

Sometimes I think that Australia was the inspiration for the Periphery, simply because they both look really good from a long way away, but up close, everything is trying to kill you.

Tribble #71

Hanse Davion, Melissa Steiner and Katrina Steiner are all busy busy people, so while they love the Steiner-Davion children very much, the amount of time they can actually devote to them is limited. Thus others - trusted friends and relatives - naturally take up some roles that might otherwise fall to the parents. Rolemodels for example.

Katrina's sister Nondi is a mother herself, absolutely trusted and has no political ambitions whatsoever. She's also a skilled mechwarrior and honestly not a bad general. What could possibly be wrong with Victor wanting to be like his Nana Nondi?

Ardan Sortek is Hanse's little brother in all but blood, a fine mechwarrior, politically shrewd and absolutely loyal. His only known ambition is to serve well and one day retire to his family's estates and be rid of politics. Undeniably Kathy could do much worse than to model herself on him.

Right?

Well...

"What do you mean neither of them wants to be Archon-Prince?" Melissa asked in confusion.

Hanse looked concerned. "Well, they both know how demanding the job is. Each insists that the other is clearly far more suited to that responsibility and would have their complete support on the throne."

"But..."

"It may be hard to understand this, love, since you were always the heir, but I know I was relieved when I was younger that Ian would inherit not me. There's considerable freedom in not having that burden in your future."

"This is Victor's duty, and Kathy's if... well. If."

"Oh they do their duty. Serving in the AFFC, maybe a career in government... but Victor outright says he sees himself as more soldier than statesman."

Their eyes met. "And Kathy?"

"She's talking about a diplomatic career after she does her five years."

Several Years Later

"Royal's Pride is cancelled. There's no point making a show based on a fictionalised version of the Steiner-Davions when the real family get more drama than we're putting in the show."

"What's the latest event in the 'Civil War'?"

"Well you remember how Victor married Omi Kurita, hoping that the family relationship with Hanse's rival Theodore would bar him from succession?"

"Of course I remember it! The media was talking about it for months!"

"Well Kathy's dating her cousin Phelan's self-declared nemesis Vladimir Ward!"

"The CLAN WARLORD!"

"That's the one!"

"Ooooh!"

Nondi and Ardan as roll models? Interesting.

For anyone that is looking to do a less traditional story, I think it would be interesting to look into the counterinsurgency campaign which transformed the Free Rasalhague Republic from a continuous hotbed of insurgency against the DCMS into a population willing to merge with Clan Ghost Bear.  I think it would probably work best to pick a planet to focus on and follow a few characters to give different perspectives on the process over the course of a few years, but there are plenty of other ways to frame the story.

Juggling Act

Rather than securing the Protectorate worlds Anton Marik struck directly at key star systems such as Marik shortly after declaring himself Captain-General. This bold strategy results in a stunning victory that wins him the support of more units and vital industry. Unable to stem the tide Janos and his loyalist shrink back to Atreus where the final battle sees younger brother defeat the elder in a BattleMech duel. For the past decade Anton has navigated the byzantine web of alliances that helped him rise to power quite successfully. The Wolf Dragoons and ComStar aided the Free Worlds in reestablishing its intelligence capabilities nearly obliterated in the war building a new agency, Federal Security Bureau (FSB), far superior to the defunct SAFE. With the support of Regulas, Sirius, Zion, and a host of smaller Provinces the new Captain-General continues to push his vision for a “true Free Worlds League where all systems have a voice in the federal government.” Of course his true power comes from the FWLM which is now highlighted by the heroes of the rebellion, the New Delian Lancers. While there are some Provincial die hards this remaining opposition at home (Oriente and Andurien) has cleverly been used to keep his wife’s family at bay (House Liao). Now Anton must decide how to react to Archon Katrina Steiner’s Peace Proposal. Can he add another piece to this dazzling act or will the League’s prosperity all fall apart?

Tribble #73: The Lion and the Vixen

The throneroom of the Triad is full of the elite of the Lyran Commonwealth. Everyone who is anyone and everyone who wants to be anyone is present to observe the first ever state visit of a reigning First Prince to Tharkad. Keen observers may notice that the Cardinal Archbishop of Tharkad is unusually nervous, perhaps at meeting a Archbishop of the New Avalon Catholic Church said to be travelling with the First Prince as a spiritual advisor.

As the great doors open to admit the First Prince, Archon Karl Steiner rises to his feet and walks to the front of the dais. His daughter Melissa is standing deferentially just a hair behind and to one side of him. Those at the front of the throne room can see that this is a smooth diplomatic move, coming forwards to meet the First Prince on equal terms. Still, he does seem to be standing just a bit off-centre...

Then the ripples of muttering from the back of the room reach them and heads begin to turn as Helene Davion walks down the central aisle. She is attended by a red-headed teenager who must clearly be her nephew Morgan. Shockingly, against all convention, Morgan is carrying a baby. Still, that's not the real headturner.

The First Prince is not in military uniform like the Archon.

She's wearing a wedding dress!

And as the political implications sink in (and Frederick Steiner glumly unfastens his hip flask and starts to chug) a few of the courtiers recognise the smile on the Lion of Tharkad's face. A smile not seen since the death of Guenivere Luvon, more than a decade before. A smile that says more clearly than words: "gentlemen, I'm going to lay that gorgeous woman tonight."

If I'm reading it right, it's an alt-universe where Katrina Steiner and Hanse Davion are gender-flipped and Archon Karl Steiner's 'Peace Proposal' has turned into a dynastic marriage between him and First Prince Helene Davion, rather than the OTL's marriage between First Prince Hanse Davion and the Archon's daughter, Melissa Steiner.

And now, I now have the image of a red headed Helena Douglas of Team Ninja's Fighting Game Series marrying Charles Dance. I approve of this fanfic idea.

Largely correct but with one addition. They accidentally jumped the gun a little, note Morgan's burden.

Tribble #74: No Pentagon Colonies
The journey of the SLDF-in-exile was finally over. Aleksander Kerensky couldn't believe his luck when they stumbled over an already existing colony in the Tanis system. Sure, the colonists already living there were rather suspicious of the new arrivals, but over time this would surely cease, and giving his troops a military goal (forming a new militia for the colonies) would deter the more restless elements. Those that prefered to settle down into civilian life could settle into a preestablished society instead of trying to build their own. And he, he could finally spend some time with his family without the burden of command or - god forbid - political leadership. No, he had learned that lesson well enough and would stay away from any position of political power.

Surely this would be the peaceful life his tired soldiers deserved?

Tribble # 75 Blind sided

Katherine Steiner Davion's moment of victory was at hand, smiling widely as she walked towards the throne room she reflected upon the success of her propaganda campaign that had broken little Yvonne's spirit, now  was the time to sweep in and snap up what was always rightfully her's while Victor was off chasing after what was left of the Smoke Jaguars and hopefully getting himself killed in the process. Stepping into the chamber she came to dead stop as she spotted Yvonne standing beside the throne, wasn't she supposed to have fled to the Combine? That question was instantly pushed aside as she finally noticed the someone who was sitting on the throne "Why what a pleasant surprise Katherine, come to congratulate me getting trapped in this Regency job?" asked the last person alive she had dream t of sitting there smiling at her, and that smile promised not the celebration she'd been hoping for but long over due payment for her ambitions.

Obviously it can't be Victor, he wouldn't need to assume the post of Regent as he is already the First Prince. Who is it? well I always felt Yvonne had quite a few experienced folks around who she could have asked to take over the Regency rather then run away and allow Katherine to waltz in and grab the throne.
