(Answered) LOS Level of 'Mechs performing a DFA
« on: 04 September 2023, 12:23:53 »
Sorry, another question about DFAs!

On page 37 of the BMM under the DFA rules, it states the following regarding the LOS of a DFA'ing 'Mech during the Weapon Attack Phase:

Quote
Its LOS level is thus two, plus the level of either the target's hex or the attacker's hex (whichever is higher)

Based on this the LOS level of a 'Mech in a level 0 hex DFA'ing against a 'Mech on a level 1 hex should be 3 (2+the level of the higher hex). The first half the accompanying example text corroborates this while the the second half appears to contradict it:

Quote
During the Weapon Attack Phase, the jumping 'Mech is considered to be in Hex C, with an LOS level of 3 (the target hex's level +2).... Other 'Mechs on the map can check for LOS and fire as the though the jumping 'Mech were in Hex C with an LOS level of 5 (base level 3, +2 for standing).

What is the intent here? Is it that the LOS level of the DFA'ing 'Mech is actually four plus the level of the target's hex or the attacker's hex (whichever is higher)? I.e., is the LOS level of the DFA'ing 'Mech based on 2 (for standing) + 2 (for being suspended in the air, mid-jump) + the level of the higher hex?

The book description isn't sufficiently differentiating between the level the mech is at and how tall it is for LOS purposes.  The attacking mech would be at Level 3 (the target's level of 1, +2 because the attacker is in mid-air about to make an attempt to land on it).  For those firing at the attacking mech, they would be dealing with an LOS level of 5 as the example says, because the DFA'ing mech's feet are "planted" in mid-air at Level 3, but it's also two levels tall like any other standing mech.

The rules text should be altered:

Its LOS level is thus two, plus the level of either the target’s hex or the attacker’s hex (whichever is higher).
Change to:
Its level is thus two, plus the level of either the target’s hex or the attacker’s hex (whichever is higher).

The example text should be altered:

the jumping ’Mech is considered to be in Hex C, with an LOS level of 3 (the target hex’s level +2).
Change to:
the jumping ’Mech is considered to be in Hex C, with a level of 3 (the target hex’s level +2).

Good timing on this catch: I just might be able to get it into the next AGOAC printing.

Thank you! That makes sense given the situation the rules are describing.
