EDITOR'S NOTE: While this ship is commonly referred to as the Dragon class, this was actually the project name rather than the class' formal identification, as it never entered service with any navy and was thus never actually given a class name. For the purposes of brevity, we will continue to refer to it in this manner.

The Dragon class corvette was a privately developed warship design of the Late Star League era, created by Di Tron industries' Alarion branch for sale to the Star League's member states. Billed as a natural successor to the aging corvettes common among the fleets of the Inner Sphere, the Dragon's design featured broad improvements in firepower, armor, and sensor systems and a much touted mulitrole capacity through its incorporation of two docking collars. Unfortunately, Di Tron couldn't find buyers. Though the SLDF acknowledged the age of their Vincent and the Dragon's obvious superiority, they felt this deficiency was better dealt with by expanding their destroyer fleet rather than investing in a new "inherently limited" corvette. The Great Houses for their part preferred to focus on a smaller number of larger hulls in order to squeeze the maximum amount of firepower out of the treaty limitations on their house fleets, or alternately they deemed their existing ships as perfectly adequate. The Territorial States showed some interest, as they already operated primarily Corvette navies, however even these states rejected the class in favor of the smaller Pinto, which was believed to offer most of the same capabilities for a significantly smaller price, and had the benefits of centuries of service to iron out the kinks, while the Dragon only existed as schematics.

In addition to its relatively heavy armor, host of offensive and defensive weaponry, and enhanced sensor capabilities, Di Tron put considerable effort into ensuring the comfort of the ship's crew, in anticipation of the Dragon operating on long term picket duty. Single occupancy quarters are the norm, and in addition the crew would have access to a pair of counter-rotating gravity decks. The size of these decks necessitated very boxy hull reminicent of the larger Vincent, and while the Dragon possessed only half mass of the Vincent, it was only marginally smaller in total dimensions. Some historians argue that these aesthetics may have contributed to the ship's general rejection.

Though Di Tron never found a market for the Dragon, the fall of the Star League gave their successors a bit more luck. Ioto Galactic enterprises, originally a Di Tron subsidiary and heirs to the Port Stanley yards of Alarion, once again offered the ship for sale in the years leading up to the First Succession War, marketing it to those powers that were expected to be fighting the Commonwealth's enemies. The Capellan Confederation eagerly snapped up a license to build the ship (paying a significant amount of hard currency in advance for licensed production of twenty hulls). Word of the Capellan deal however torpedoed similar negotiations with the Federated Suns, triggering bitter recriminations over the Lyrans' willingness to deal with the Suns' enemies. Possibly out of pure spite, a Davion naval force struck the Rashpur-Owens yards at Capella in the early days of the First Succession War, failing to completely cripple the yards, but destroying the construction slips where these new vessels were to be built before a single keel had been laid.

The vessel would also catch the interest of the tiny Finmark Free Republic (a successor state of the Rim Worlds Republic). Rightly fearing the brutal conflict of the First Succession War, the small state tasked its sole shipyard with the production of a defensive fleet, which would be composed primarily of Pinto class ships with (unlicensed copies of) the Dragon class vessel, modified with additional passenger space for flag staff, serving as flotilla leaders. True to the sad history of the Dragon, these ships would never see service, as Lyran forces attacked Finmark in 2792, destroying the barely started vessels in their construction slips, alongside the shipyards themselves and every population center on Finmark.

Hmmm... seems there's plenty of room for more AAA, and no real reason not to add it...

It was the star league.  :P

Though... hypothetically, a more modern state might take advantage of its weapons layout to bump up its anti-air systems and point defense battery to make a powerful screening ship...
