The first of three Blade Runner short films linking the gap between the original and 2049. All three directed by Luke Scott (Ridley Scott's son).
No denying it has some nicely crafted dialog. The actual short begins at 0:58 if you wish to skip both intros...

That's...remarkable reviews. Damn.
-
I was thinking of re-editing my earlier post, but decided to just do up a new one after watching Blackout 2022.
Damn... rather nice shout-outs to the first film indeed.
And getting Edward James Olmos to reprise was that topping on it as well.
Thoroughly enjoyable.

Has science fiction truly returned? Oh my... I'm looking forward to this one. Such a good media campaign for 2049.
-
The original Blade Runner is one of my personal "Top Ten Scifi Movies of All Time" so I was leary about this sequel. Everything I'm reading says its going to be great, so I'm really getting excited!
BTW, I saw the first of the animated shorts, and it was really good. Can't wait for more.

There is only one animated short, the other two are live action and have been linked erlier in this thread.

Hah! So, I've been trying to recall what the bird and feather scene near the end of Watanabe's 2022 anime remind me of... I mean: other than the obvious death scene for Roy at the end of the original film... It's the scene in The Ghost in the Shell where The Major merges with The Puppet Master!! She sees and angelic figure descending-- and feathers cross over her face. Has to be a nod, right? Has to. I mean even Trixie is somewhat analogous to The Major. I... dunno... maybe I'm seeing an Easter-Egg where none exists... Or am I?... =)
-
Mutual homage I imagine. The scene in GITS came out, of course, well after the scene in Blade Runner and its various meanings. Also, loose feathers and angels are a big cultural meme in Japan as well for whatever reason - in this case I imagine it's a mutual homage of doves signifying death as well as the angelic aspect symbolizing apotheosis.

Watanabe used flying birds in two death scenes during the final episode of Cowboy Bebop.
In Ep. 26 (The Real Folk Blues Pt. 2), the gunshot that kills Julia causes a flock of birds to take flight behind her falling body:

And when Spike collapses (and presumably dies) at the very end, the end music starts and a flock of birds rises right before the credits roll:

Birds, flight, and death are a common motif in stories and art going back thousands of years. Egyptian Nekhbet, Greek/Roman Phoenix, Celtic Morrigu, Norse ravens/valkyries, etc.

Oh goodie...
Here's Warner Bros. Official release of Blackout 2022 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrZk9sSgRyQ).
Enjoy...

they have it on crunchyroll as well the black out one, posted ~3 days ago

I just watched the full movie.
Quite simply the best film I've seen in a long long time. The movie is faithful not just to the original Bladerunner film, but it also touches on the central theme of Philip K Dick's original vision on the perception of reality and what it means to be human. Even though there are action sequences, its not a shoot 'em up. Instead its a very good detective story with deep characterizations. Brilliant. 9.5/10

So anyone seen it yet? I haven't, but I know what's going on, oh BOY. This is a good one.
Also related, I've been working on a prop project the last week or so. I always wondered what these were supposed to be chambered in; the wheelgun's a .44 SPL but it's THE FUTURE...
-
Saw it last night. Loved every minute of it. Only missed Vangelis soundtrack from the old one. Lots to think about our future...

Viewed Blade Runner last pm... Deeply satisfying in every way imaginable, and yet also refreshingly bold. This is what sci-fi should be. Visually stunning, smart, thought-provoking, with perfect pacing. So many things so many films in the genera get so absolutely wrong. What an accomplishment to have everything come together so near perfectly. Loved every minute. My only pang of disappointment is in seeing how poorly it was received at the box-office. Especially in contrast to throw-away cheap thrills lacking a soul. 9.7/10
*Obvious content warning w/mild spoilers: there is nudity, and implied coupling. The main steamy scene was handled perfectly. Without any gratuitous cheap-thrills at all (and cuts away before anything, other than kissing, happens). In another scene though, there is some heavily implied 'activity.' You see no details, but... yeah. Also, a few bare female chests, rears, and partially exposed male anatomy shown. Violence was pretty intense in at least three scenes. Gore seemed to, interestingly enough, be mostly hidden from view. At least in a couple of scenes where you expect to be shocked. FWIW.
