Overview:
The APL-0Z Apollo is the first Battlemech in Black Hawk Mechworks' Retrotech
line of war machines. The Retrotech concept is simple; take modern Battlemech
designs, and refit them using tried-and-true Succession War technology in order
to provide a low-tech, easy to maintain, garrison version of their forebear.
Built on an entirely new chassis, the -0Z remains competitive despite mounting
less armour and lacking the advanced guidance systems of the -1M by improving
its ability to get into a firing position in rough terrain, and increasing its
short-range defensive punch. Costing 1,224,673 C-bills less than the original,
the -0Z is an effective fire-support machine for garrison commanders,
budget-conscious mercs, and those without reliable access to top-notch repair
personnel and equipment.

Capabilities:
The change to a 50-ton chassis was a conscious design objective resulting in
substantial price savings through mounting a lighter gyro than the original
Apollo, as well as providing the 'Mech with the incredibly common class 200
engine thereby simplifying replacement. 8.5 tons of armour protect its frame -
not full protection, but good enough for garrison work, and - as it is centred
around the torsos - enough to ensure that the -0Z is able to keep its weapons
on-line for substantial periods. The twin LRM-15 units of the original have
been retained, albeit without the Artemis fire-control systems. In place of its
Small Pulse Lasers the -0Z carries paired Medium Lasers - a substantial
improvement in close-range capacity. The true advantage of the -0Z lies in the
addition of jump-jets, allowing the 'Mech to travel up to 120 meters in each
jump. This lets it take the high ground in record time, increasing its
effectiveness when deploying considerably. 11 heatsinks keep the Apollo
relatively cool as long as it does not continually jump and fire, but rather
moves into an advantageous position and then rains down missiles from behind
the cover of cliffs or wooded areas.

Variants:
The APL-0ZA is the only produced variant of this design, swapping out the
jumpjets for increased protection and bringing the armour on the 'Mech to 10.5
tons - the maximum that the chassis can support. A single ton of ammunition is
removed in favour of an additional Medium Laser mounted in the head.

Although it's a fine 'mech, without the SPLs it doesn't have very good anti-infantry capabilities. I'd trade one of the ML for a machine gun and half a ton of ammo (or a flamer, but the garrison may need those trees where they are)

AI is better done by supporting units. But I'd trade the 11th SHS for another ton of armor. If you have to move and fire you can drop one LRM every 4th turn, and at short range you can still jump and fire both MLs.

  • And I think it's gonna be a long, long time...

That's definitely a more focused Introtech Baby Archer, even more so than the Dervish or Whitworth. Very cool.
