One thing to consider is the differance between 'upgrade kit' models and factory-built models. If you XL and engine and endo the bones, it's near a 'grandfather's axe'.
With some mechs, it might make sense to have two models in a state, the ones upgraded from older mechs, and the new-built ones that use XL & endo

Case in point, the Phoenix Hawk. Doesn't need more than DHS and to replace the MG with SPL; maybe ER the large laser. But a lot of the XL engine variants are nice to the point I can see them being made at the same time.

Grasshopper

Lose the missile launcher and three heat sinks. DHS the remaining 'sinks, because almost everything is better with DHS. ER the large laser. Add three MPL; Head and each arm.

I know the MPL isn't everyone's favourite, but this adds a ton of (very) short range firepower while removing the need to add CASE. Also adds a minimal amount of infantry killing.

Maybe split one of the Medium Pulse Lasers into two Small Pulse Lasers? ^-^

Thanks, Daryk.  I used the GOL-3M as part of a Marik assault lance back in 1990, and the overskinked XL engine combined with MGs was always a pain, especially since the IS was stuck with only one mech capable of being changed from the book standard out of your lance.  I usually dumped 5 heat sinks out along with the MGs, and added in a ER Large, an extra ton of Gauss ammo, and 2 mediums.

Being a quad limited the crit spaces pretty heavily, but between DHS and Endo-Steel, I was able to upgrade both LRM launchers, ER the PPC, put in CASE, and max the armor.  Glad you like it!

MPL kill three troopers per hit - good enough for most purposes since PBI smooshing isn't a primary task.

You're right, as long as they're all in front of the 'mech.  You can only put one behind you, though...

My favored mod to the Grasshopper is to drop enough heat sinks (making the rest doubles), and adding endosteel so you can upgrade the engine to a 350 standard and add an extra jump jet...this gives you a 70 ton 5/8/5 moving, nearly maxed armored zombie, especially if you drop the LRM's...

Edit: Hmm...if you use the 5N model as the basis, I believe you can keep the armament and 11 double heat sinks, add endo and replace the armor with 11.5 tons of ferro, and this should give you enough tonnage to upgrade the engine to a 350 standard and add that extra jump jet...a 70 ton 5/8/5 moving zombie armed with a ppc and 5 medium lasers and armored with 206 points of armor...or you could drop the extra heat sink and 2 medium lasers and the ppc for 2 large lasers...runs a bit hotter but has 2 large lasers and 3 medium lasers total...

If it was a new-built mech then that would be a thing. But the Grasshopper is a rare mech that has been out of production for centuries. Changing the skeleton and engine isn't a refit, it's a complete disassembly and rebuild.

You can argue either way the likelihood it would increase or decrease the extent of the refit, but it should be considered. Also, if we're talking about 3050r and 3050u, that includes the Guillotine, which should go down a different upgrade path to differentiate them.

Granted...a simpler refit would be to drop down to 14 double heat sinks and replace each of the arm mounted medium lasers with large lasers... >:D

For the Guillotine, I think I would favor the following: drop the heat sinks to 12 doubles, move the large laser to the left arm and add another (while dropping the medium lasers there), and place a ppc in the right arm. Drop the armor to 11.5 tons of Ferro and add CASE to protect the SRM ammo...

Putting an XL engine in a Charger is just plain bad economic unless you're completely strapped for mechs. This is a refit that lets Kurita get some use out of the Chargers they have without breaking the bank. Then you rebuild the factory so the new-built models go 4/6

For a panther, I nominate the -10K2. Thing is a decent trooper for it's weight. In the same vein, it's hard to do better than the WLF-2, so I vote that stays the same; maybe drop the rear medium laser for another heat sink.

00000

Here's an upgrade of the Marik Banshee. The mandatory DHS are there, as well as ERing the PPC. The medium lasers are removed to turn the mech into an infantry blander, and the armour is replaced with Ferro, increasing the armor on the arms a bit and (more importanly) the legs a lot.

Nice simple refit.

And here's an refit to the basic -3E Banshee. Still over-engined, but if you don't want to mess with the core of the mech, this is as good as I can come up with. Hesprides new built could easily be canon -5S, but this is to make use of the older 'mechs in the LCAF.

I think I actually like this Urbanmech. It's got a solid long-range hit, a nasty amount of close-firepower for a light mech, and nice accuracy at point-blank.

I expect a lot of people will call it bad things anyway

'Mechs mounting IS XL engines can't survive a side torso destruction, so even if the CASE keeps an ammo explosion from spreading, the 'mech will be needing a new power plant; XLs are most of the 'mech's cost, and they are very hard to come by, so most of the time the 'mech will be a write off anyway.

ongoing campaign. As in, repair after the fact. Case/XL needs a ton of work to fix in order to make it combat effective again. No CASE means you need a new mech.

Individual game there isn't a difference, I agree.

If you don't have time or skilled techs to repair XL engines there also isn't much of a difference.  The obvious solution is to only use XL engines on flashbulbs and possibly gauss platforms as gauss ammo is inert and gauss rifles can be powered down and made safe without stopping or opening up the back of the mech like you must to dump ammo.

Overview
Failure to adapt flak ammunition to work with Ultra AC-5 feed mechanisms doomed left the JM6-DD unsuited to its original design role.  The meager armor upgrade did not fit it for a direct combat role and frequent losses to ammo explosions in spite of attempts at CASE did not help matters.  The extra-light engine had to go, as did the unreliable and inadequately versatile ultra-autocannons.  Instead the JM6-DD2 mounts an LB-10X autocannon in each arm providing better anti-air capabilities and greater firepower than the original.  Even with a return to the older standard fusion engine it is able to upgrade armor protection to a merely laughable instead of outright murderous 8 tons of ferro-fibrous.

Hmmm... an LB-10X is much less satisfying than an AC/20, despite the addition of 2 PPCs.  An Atlas needs some kind of headcapper as a beat stick.  Blazer Cannons work for that you know...  ^-^

There were probably like 3 blazers in the IS. You’d be on the waitlist from decades and you know that jerk from Skye is going to return it late

My favorite the Warhammer 7D, a logical upgrade of the 6D.
No Ammo Boom, 2 ER PPC for range hits, 2 ML for close work, 2 SPL for those really close problems and infantry and a SL because 1 point of armor not worth it.

There were probably like 3 blazers in the IS. You’d be on the waitlist from decades and you know that jerk from Skye is going to return it late
As I recall, all the Houses eventually prototyped it, so figure at least 5... :)

Don't forget 'mechs come with one ton of "free" Communications Equipment built into the cockpit, so 3 and 4 tons of the stuff give you the same effects.

Aww, I did forget. That'll free up a ton for more armor,  will be able to edit later.

House Liao has a bare handful of Assassin, but those it has have been refitted and reassigned to special teams. On several occasions the first indication Marik troops have had that the enemy was in the area was an upgraded assassin NARCing their most dangerous mech, followed by hundreds of LRMs launched from out of sight.
