Normally, equity firms will buy a company to cannibalize it.  This could be very bad.

Not necessarily. Sometimes they buy out companies to improve profitability, then sell it on at a profit. Which ends up sucking for someone, such as the employees, the customers, or both. I know because I was there (they took a good company to work for, with nice perks & benefits, & sucked that all away).

The company that owned Testors paint was bought out and shut down.
