how about Halo: Reach? could a Soyal shoot down a dropship in atmosphere, firing from orbit?

Assuming you can line things up, sure. The numbers will likely suck, but it's definitely possible, and if you connect, the results will be VERY dramatic.

Sorry, i was tired when i wrote that.

I was refering to page 54 of the First Succession War book.  When the the Du Shi Wang-class battleship
Mica Liao there, escorted by the Soyal-class cruiser Solstice.  They faced off with Free World League forces at Second Chance.

Nope, that was a different fight.  The naval battle over Second Chance was decided by superior Marik numbers and a few well-placed Alamos.

Wasn't the LAM Strike the Battle of Robinson?

Was the Soyal able to make a decisive difference in any engagement where the Capellans did NOT have the element of surprise?

cheers,

Gabe
So, now I'm imagining people boxing up Overlords for loading as cargo.  "Nope, totally not a DropShip.  Everyone knows you can't fit a DropShip in a WarShip!  It's...a ten thousand ton box of marshmallows!  Yeah.  For the Heavy Guards big annual smores party."
--Arkansas Warrior, on the possibility of carrying Dropships as cargo in Warship cargo bays.

Second Chance.  The Mariks were attacking the Capellans, and the CapCon Soyal was able to land a crippling shot on a League - class destroyer while the Marik fleet was on approach.

Seems like as I'm reading more into the war, the Soyal are deployed in pairs.  However, they seem to very vulnerable being overran being schooled by fighters and other fast warships least fluff wise.

I was just reading that. That one was surprise too. Zenith to Nadir (or the other way around) in-system jump, first shot of engagement one-shots a League... then FWL fleet turns around to engage them.

Thats surprise by definition.
