Title: 2014-10-26 The Field Is Lost [Lance Scarinci]
Post by: roosterboy on 26 October 2014, 11:24:35
"I don’t know who the hell this is, and that’s what’s got my blood pounding."

When unknown raiders arrive at Winfield, the commanders of Winfield's Regiment must pull out all of the stops to keep the planet out of enemy hands.

I don't remember the Falcons taking a beating on Winfield as the story seems to tell

Not a BattleCorps member so I can't compare this wiki entry about Winfield to the story, but Winfield's Brigade/Regiment gave the Falcons a run for their money: http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Winfield_(LC)#Clan_Invasion

Winfield's Brigade actually gets hammered a bit more in this story than the writeup in the Jade Falcon sourcebook (p. 37) suggests.
The author gets extra points for giving us a Jump Pigeon as late as 3050; that made me chuckle.  O0

A little background info:

Though I couldn't find a way to work it into the story, I went with the idea that the Falcons assumed a unit called Winfield's Regiment guarding the world of Winfield were simply a planetary militia instead of a fully qualified and supported Lyran line regiment.  Thus they were not expecting the resistance they got, and their performance suffered at first, allowing Winfield's troops to gain an early edge. As it's still very early in the invasion, the Falcons followed Zell, right up until the third battalion joined the fight.  At that point, Star Colonel Diane Anu had to call in her last bid, the swarm of the 5th's Elementals.

A lot of the writeups for the first waves of the invasion from the Jade Falcon, Wolf Clan and Invading Clans sourcebooks show that the Clans, while generally victorious, took a few good hits along the way. I wanted to write about one of those times where if the Inner Sphere forces had been just a little bit tougher, smarter, or better equipped, then the Invasion might have run a slightly different course.

And for the errata crowd: Though Evak Mattlov is the commander mentioned in Winfield's small text writeup in the Jade Falcon Sourcebook, it was determined in fact checking that this was an error on FASA's part. Evak Mattlov is listed in the Butler writeup and the Phone Book as commanding the 4th Falcon Velites, while Diane Anu appears in the Phone Book as commanding the 5th Battle Cluster. So Anu got the command.

I hope people find it a good story!

Thank you for the story Jal!

Long story short, this story reminded me why I like Battletech.  Even a small bit of the universe, like Winfield's Regiment, has over 150 years of history that can be tracked.

Short story long, I broke out my Jade Falcon sourcebook to read the blurb about the fighting on Winfield.  Then I got out the my House Steiner book, then my 4th Succession War Atlas, then my Historical: War of 3039 to read up on what the Winfield Regiment go into.

Then I broke out my Field Manual: Mercenaries Supplemental (or was is the Revised?) which gave me the info that the unit was created in 2992 and raided Clan territory in 3057.  Then it was Field Manual: Updates, Field Manual:3085 and then Field Manual:3145 to follow the Winfield Regiment into the Dark Age.  I still need to get into my Jihad books as I am sure they are mentioned there too.

Needless to say, I enjoyed my afternoon sifting though the historical documents :)
