Source of Lead?
« on: 04 November 2013, 23:05:35 »
Given the looming shutdown of that Lead Smelting plant in the US, will this greatly affect IWM's prices or bottom line?

I mean; Pewter has lead in it, right?

Low end grade pewter has lead in it. I believe all of what IWM makes is lead free, so it's a medium if not slightly higher grade pewter.

IWM does not use lead, so there shouldn't be too much an issue directly, but indirectly they could see some price fluxuations depending on what happens with Ralladium

If memory serves me correctly, there's a few laws in place that outlaw the use of lead in applications about the size of ours.

As Tehpope said lead is not used in the pewter IWM uses. And lead prices overall should not see a significant change as the smelter in question does not have a huge output as smelters go. Though for me I hope they go up a little, I work in mining.  ;D

Global price increases in other metals used in Ralladium (a tin-based pewter, with dashes of copper and antimony if IIRC) have certainly affected IWM's mini prices over the years.

Well, granted, but I was thinking more in the scope of this smelter in particular.  I stand corrected

Wha? I thought this was the "biggest ore to lead smelter in the west?"

Course I also thought lead was a major economical resource; like is it not used in most major industries at some point?

The Doe Run smelter only produced about 150, 000 tons of refined lead a year. While their lead acid battery recycling center produced around 180, 000 tons of lead. The smelter has some legacy clean up issues too and it was determined to close it. Www.doerun.com for more info.

Huh, so it sounds like this won't be a big deal at all; especially as IWM doesn't even use it, lol.

Pretty much. Personally I like to see lead above a dollar a pound, but that is from an industry point of view. Sucks when I need a new car battery.

Why is that beneficial to you?

He works in the mining industry. High metals prices contribute to his paychecks. O0

And open mines in general.

After having a mine you were happily working at get shut down because of low commodity prices (zinc in my case) you root for higher prices.
