What NASbox should I get for an off-site backup?
« on: 29 January 2018, 19:06:12 »
I'm wanting to buy a NASbox to hook up to the router at my parents' house, then automatically back up several folders from my home PC to it on a weekly basis.

Can anyone recommend a specific NASbox to buy, or backup software to use for this?

I have Netgear ReadyNAS Duo that has given us 12 years of flawless service. At some stage, when the family budget allows I will upgrade to a new one.

It was easy to setup, easy to use. I do not have it setup for internet access (it has that capability but I choose not to use it for security reasons) and I back-up onto portable HDD for off-site back-up but the two Seagate 500 gb HDD have performed reliably.

I've got some NASboxes for local use - two Netgear Storas, a WD MyCloud EX2, and some older generic ones. What I'm looking for is one that is easy to back up to and manage via internet. I've never worked with a NASbox outside my LAN before

I have not used the Netgear Stora or the WD MyCloud but I believe the NetGear ReadyNAS is probably a bit more business orientated therefore it has a few more features that would support you being able to back up and manage via internet. If you check out the features videos on the current generation of Netgear ReadyNAS I believe they should meet your requirements: https://www.netgear.com/business/products/storage/readynas/readynas-desktop.aspx#tab-featurevideos

The My Cloud EX series are business models, so probably similar to the ReadyNAS in feature set.
I'm not fixed on brand, so I'll be doing a lot of reading of reviews

I had some thought of going into NAS backup but doing it onsite via fireproof ioSafe.

I'd never though of that!

I'd need flood-proof as well though, as we've had three "once in a century" floods in the last ten years.
The river is unlikely to rise enough to reach my end of the street, but the beck that runs through the culvert under the back yard has a good chance of doing some damage if the culvert cracks

Maybe check their guarantees. They are expensive though.

Sounds like having a 2nd NASbox at a relative's house will be simpler & cheaper!
