I'm for whichever will sell better.  Let's face it, there are more amateurs than professionals and amateurs want simplicity.  A professional would love more pieces, yet it's the professional who has the skills to just cut his mini up and reassemble it as he chooses.  I find that to be a better option than intimidating all the amateurs from buying because they pick up a blister and see not a mini but a pile of metal parts.

I can see the case for both -  one piece minis so that you can field a mini almost straight out of the blister and multi-piece for poseability and customising/configuring.

It is why I think that CGL/IWM are onto a winner with plastic alpha strike lance boxes and the new IWM pewter releases.

I can see the Logic here :)

Same here.

Some time a year or so ago, someone suggested IWM should make 2 of every 'Mech, one multi-piece for the people with more "Advanced" assembly skills, then a simpler version for the rest of us.  Except for that doubling the cost of the Master, as well as the required storage space, that sounds like a "Good Idea" on paper.   ::)  In practice though?  Not Happening.

For now, the Sculpting Artists like Behrle will just have to stick to giving us a "Semi-Happy Medium".   ;D
To me, Repros are 100% Wrong, and there's NO  room for me to give ground on this subject. I'm not just an Immovable Object on this, I'm THE Immovable Object. 3D Prints are just 3D Repros.

I think this is a bit of an oversimplification, and honestly I think a vanishingly small percentage of miniatures are sold to true "professionals" (that is, people who assemble and paint miniatures for money).  I don't doubt there are plenty of advanced "amateurs" who want the posability of multi-part castings, of course.  The talk on the forums makes that clear.   On the other hand, there are some "amateurs" both beginners and experienced who are not that bothered about posability, as long as the original sculpt isn't produced in some  goofy pose (which was more a problem with some of  the older RP era stuff than the newer sculpts).

All I know is for every piece that's added it's one more point of failure for a miniature.

If you really feel that way, you should be arguing for all of them to be smaller, like Battleforce scale.

Regardless of poseability, it is much easier to make a one-piece casting for a smaller mini than for a bigger one, because the undercuts in the mold are proportionately smaller, and there is less chance of cracks or pitting during the cooling of a large chunk of metal.

As a bonus, they'd be cheaper too.

Well yes. But I like bigger mini's. But honestly a figure needs to be at least seven pieces or less. If it takes four pieces just to make a single leg there is a problem. I mean seriously, how many mini's do we have where the body needs like five pieces to assemble?

Being ambitious is fine, the real problem is that multi-component miniatures become more and more annoying to work with when they're cast in metal. They're too heavy to stand on their own so they have to be pinned together, which is an exhaustive process with, for example, the Dragon II. If the same model was cast in a lighter material like resin it would no longer be an issue. More advanced models and greater detail is a good thing but there's only so much you can do and so far you can go with pewter before you start hitting the point where it is no longer worth the effort or cost compared to just shifting over to something else.

Also, this isn't a new phenomenon. Try putting an Owens together straight out of the blister. The whole mold is bent and really annoying to work with.

On topic, I never liked the Flashman but I am almost tempted by this rework. I'll consider it for my Blakists once I see a few painted examples.

Interestingly enough, the Owens is one of the few minis with feet molded into the base that I would be willing to buy a second one. It was very easy to put together and I didn't have any problems with mine. Most others of that feet/base type I avoid like the plague. Maybe I got a strange one but I found that gluing the front leg and letting it sit overnight allowed the rest of the mini to go together very easily the next night. (I just put mine together three weeks ago. Black Lanners and Mad Cat IIIs are the other end of that spectrum.)

I wasn't a part of this effort, but I have to tip my hat to B3, and everyone else who was a part of this effort. I picked up a Flashman yesterday, and it is absolutely gorgeous! I'm already checking my minis collection against all the SLDF RATs I can find, so I can build a full cavalry group around this bad boy!

(Also, I'm really tempted to find some Polish cavalry wings to put on it...)

I don't mind if a mini has a lot of pieces, particularly for BattleTech. The game is so small scale that having one more 'mech is a big deal. I will grant that to build up a few options quickly the plastics are good, but once you have about a battalion ready you don't need to add more mechs all that quickly.

Both it and the Highlander. :)

(Remember, things go to physical stores a while before they get to the online store.)

Brick and mortar stores with an online presence also have 'em. For example, I've seen the new Highlander on Amazon. :)

Really? I like to support IWM directly whenever possible, but shipping is exactly what makes me contemplate going other routes. After all, I like to buy minis more often than placing a bulk order once every few years allows for...

Generally I find IWM's easier on the shipping long term. I generally order about 4-5 mini's at a time every few months. At most shipping is about 10 bucks. Amazon tends to hit you four bucks shipping each mini. Especially if from different sellers.

I ordered the old AND new Highlanders from Derek a while back, along with a pair of the new Flashman minis, for 20% off each one.  O0  He's always got decent shipping also.  Well, to SE Missouri anyway.   :D  Try him at Aries Games and Miniatures and see what you think.  He's planning on doing a "Remodel" of his site, but I don't know that he's implemented it yet, so there shouldn't be any problems.  I can't access his store because of my pokey dialup, so we handle everything via email.   :D  Not perfect, but it works.
