Aww, you said I was stunning! :) Shame to hear we lost it...

I hadn't forgotten about you, but had not realised just how far south your Mechs had gotten when they gangbanged the Warhawk.  You should be proud of your 'hammer though, it absorbed a crazy amount of damage in one turn: dbl tap from the Ultra 20and laser fire from the Cauldy, then Moonsword's mechs got to work on it.  It took maybe 80 points that turn, had 3 locations stripped, the CT down to 2 armour, and lost an arm.  But it was still standing.

Even with the purchasing ban now in force, I have the following 1/72 Spitfires to build: MkI, MkIa, MkIIa, MkVb, MkVc, MkVI HF, 2xMkVIII, 2x MkIX, MkXII, 4xMkXIV, F.22, F.24, 2xSeafire IIc, Seafire III, Seafang. Really sad I didn't manage to get a MkXVIII or F.21 before the ban took effect. I also have a Ju88A4, Do17E, Do17Z, Bf109E4, Bf109G6, FW190D9, Mustang III, Typhoon I, Ki43-I, Ki-43-II, A6M2, B5N2, D3A1, Blenheim IV, Martin-Baker MB5, 2xHurricane I, 2xHurricane IIc, 2xHurricane IIb, Mosquito FB.VI, Hudson I, PZL 11c, Martlet II, Wildcat VI, Tarpon II, 2xCorsair II, and Hellcat I.

Hope you've got a big shelf.

Ok if you have that many to build, how many do you have already built?

Spitfire Vc trop, Spitfire IXc, Spitfire XVIe, Spiteful F.14, Fulmar I, Barracuda II, Firefly FR. I, plus a Spitfire Ia I built for my dad and a Spitfire Ia/II hybrid I built for Melanie ("make me one of your airplanes, a cool one"). A number of the unfinished kits are in various states of assembly as well; some just need decals.

I hope the Mossie will be made with authentic balsa wood  :D

I once made a Spitfire and a Focke-Wulf out of balsa wood with my dad when I was small. Then I took a hammer to the FW.

And in other news, Team EvilClan Smoke Jaguar defeated the freebirths of the DCMS last night.  MVP award to Moonsword's Nova, the toughest Nova I think I've ever seen.  BlackAce's sacrificial lambs did well, 4 of his 5 losing limbs, but setting up the Jags for Sarcasmo's stunning flanking maneuver.  Sarcasmo nearly turned the tide, as he critted and destroyed my Warhawk's gyro via TACs.

That's organized compared to my workbench.  I'll take a pic and show it here soonish.

Now as far as the different models of planes are the "variants" noticeable or does it really take someone who knows the changes to recognize them?

The Mk.I through Mk.IX Spits use exactly the same airframe and fuselage only the equipment (armament, radiators/oil coolers, exaust stubs and propellers) noticably change. The Griffon engined Marks (LF.XII to F.21 are visually different though.

Some are way easier than others. I can tell most of the Merlin-engined Spitfire marks apart, though I'm no expert, and the Mark VIII, Mark IX, and Mark XVI are almost identical externally. The Griffin-engined Spitfires are tougher for me; I can tell a Mark XII or Mark XIV apart, but I have a hard time with the later marks, up until the Mark 22/24, and those two I can't distinguish from each other.

Ah gotcha.  How many marks were there in total during the war?

I might be able to pull that off, but it'd be late.  At least 9:30 or 10:00 Eastern.

Marks I, II, PR. IV, V, VI HF, VII HF, VIII, IX, PR. XI, XII, PR. XIII, XIV, XVI, and F.21 all served, to my knowledge. BlackAce surely knows more than I, though. PR denotes photo-reconnaissance Spits, and HF Spits had pointier wingtips and were optimized for very high altitude combat flights.

Fourteen different versions of the same plane.  Hmm and people complain of to many mech variants and new units in Battletech. ::)

It doesn't even count the versions planned that never made it into action!

Then there's things like the Mark VIII which was was a more advanced Mark IX, but it took a long time to develop, whereas the Mark IX was rushed into service.

Exactly!

Another example is the Germans and their tanks.  Off the top of my head they had the Panzer I, II, III, IV, Panther, Tiger, and King Tiger.  Also that little tank from another country they used.  Skoda or something?  Cant think of it right now and to busy getting record sheets ready for DragonCon to spend time looking for it.  Not to mention the different versions of each tank.  Then you add on things like anti-tank units...

Here are, from top to bottom, a Spitfire Ia, Vb (in Free Polish colors), VIII in RAAF colors, IIRC, I think that's Clive "Killer" Caldwell's Spit), a PR XIX (I THINK), and an F.22 or F.24.

Pz. 35(t) and Pz. 38(t). The t was for "tschechisch". They were actually built by Českomoravská Kolben-Daněk, though Skoda had a hand in the Pz.35(t).

The problem the Germans had was that they made too many (far too many) different subtle mods of the different AFVs (not that the Allies weren't also doing the same with multiple flavours of Sherman etc) but not enough bulk of one type optimised for mass production

Well, it panned out for the guys who made World of Tanks!

Speer: Mein Fuhrer, this is just balls, respectfully. We have, like, three different main battle tanks right now, and WHO KNOWS how many subvariants. And we're still producing the Pazer II? Why? Why?

Hitler: Tell him, Guderian.

Guderian: The Fuhrer has a seventy year plan to break into the model and video game industry.

Speer: What are...video...games?

Hitler: That's not important! What IS important is that our National Socialist Banner will be erected upon their ramparts! I forsee entire fortunes being made by those who simply publish video game tours of my chateau at Wolfenstein! Gentlemen! To the 1600x900 Reich!
