Design Challenge - Put stats to the Image!
« on: 27 March 2018, 19:59:41 »
Hello everyone, Clanners included.

We've seen a bunch of design challenges, some based around weight to weaponry and others about putting stats to fluff.

Well, how about I give you an image and you build a mech based around what you see from that image? And, just for bonus kicks, we'll use something from a later Macross series that never made it to North America  ;D

So...I present to thee, the rules!

1. Any technologies allowed so long as they fit within the era you pick. So no Hyper Assault Gauss rifles if this thing is meant to be Clan Invasion Era  :P
2. As with other challenges, I will judge only the first submission you make. Feel free to make others but I only take the first design.
3. I will, at the beginning of the next week on Tuesday, make a list of what I think of the various designs and then crown a winner (or target for everyone else)
4. I mostly judge on the 'fun' factor. Would this thing be something interesting to play?

Annnnnnnnndddddd our first image is, drum roll please...

So, what can you all do with this?  :))

SSW doesn't do LAMs, but I think I can get 2 LRM-5s (with one ton of ammo), a Small Laser, and 5.5 tons of armor into a 5/8/5 30-ton LAM.

MML does LAMs just fine.

Nothing demands that thing to be a LAM though.

Well it looks like Snimm and I went kinda of in the same direction using MMLs and PWs.
I just went for a lighter weight. I also added a couple of CSRM-6 (OS) into the mix. They are technically torso mounted, but I figure that they are mounted on the PW to better mimic the art.

So here's my Gerwalk:

Well, how about I give you an image and you build a mech based around what you see from that image? And, just for bonus kicks, we'll use something from a later Macross series that never made it to North America  ;D

Slight correction for you...Macross II: Lover's Again, the series from which this mecha was taken, was brought over to NA back in the 90's, and has been released both on VHS and on DVD...it was the first attempt to make a sequel to the original series, but was not done by the original group, and is thus not a part of the official Macross universe...

And I realize this one doesn't count, but in an effort to come up with something different, I finally hit on it:  What if each of those missile ports is a separate, large missile?  Like the Thunderbolt!!

Originally, I had 10 Thunderbolt-5s.  Then I decided to let MML-3s represent the outer most missiles, so I can use 4 Thunderbolt-10s to represent the remaining in the picture (and if I really wanted to go nuts, I could go to 100 tons and use Tbolt-15s).  I don't know if this is a fearsome Mech or not, but at least I have 12 shots of Thunderbolt for each launcher.

Sure, why not. I didn't go LAM with this, since it seemed a little too obvious, but I did grab a partial wing and torso-mounted cockpit to make that picture fit best. Since the partial wing gives a +2 jump range bonus, I wanted to give it 8 base jump to allow for +5 movement mods, so the weight was kind of pinched for anything else. The launchers should either be MML-5 or LRM-5 on this design, so I wanted a secondary weapon with a similar range profile. IS tech couldn't fit much in the gun slot(I got an ERML at best, and even then only with seriously limited armor), but with Clan tech you can get an ERLL, which is much more LRM-like in its ranges.

The result of this is the new Jade Falcon mech, the Issus. The Issus is a light Mech for second-line units, designed to engage in combat from a distance and avoid close-quarters fighting. The Mech was originally named "Issus" as a placeholder name, as the obscure Terran jumping insect was not expected to be considered an appropriate Mech name by the Scientist Caste member leading the design project. However when saKhan Uvin Buhallin heard the name he took it as a reference to Alexander's famous battle. Given the saKhan's fearsome reputation, nobody was willing to correct his misinterpretation, so the name stuck.

Good news is the lab boys say the symptoms of asbestos poisoning show an immediate latency of 44.6 years. So if you're thirty or over you're laughing. Worst case scenario you miss out on a few rounds of canasta, plus you've forwarded the cause of science by three centuries. I punch those numbers into my calculator, it makes a happy face.

The "Girhook", a Blakist Boondoggle design; Built using LAM inspiration and an interface cockpit. Also considered a dead end; Existing LAMs were more effective than an LAM-like design, the unique design was unbalanced and hard to control, and the weapon load combined with fragile body resulted in a mech that was as unreliable as the Nexus; The combined final chassis was deemed unworth the resources required to utilize such expensive hardware as the Interface cockpit, and two of the three prototypes were scrapped. The final prototype remains unfound.

XL engine, Chameleon LPS because Null Sig would not fit.  Tried for improved jump jets, but just could not fit it in.

It's not actually transformable that we know of, so I'd cut it with the LAM's.
I'd quit it with the 'torso-mounted' cockpits as well, since canon designs do manage the standard head layout even in hunched over chicken-walkers.

You're not the OP, so don't try and dictate build restrictions.
I would post up a robotic torso-mounted cockpit in a LAM, but some things just won't go together.

I believe you're over-reacting here, because I didn't mean that with any malice or hostility.

FWIW, I saw the rolling eyes as additional snark, not as playful. It's easy to be misinterpreted online.

Fair enough, I guess it is hard to truly gauge someone's ACTUAL meaning.

Ruger

http://www.macross2.net/m3/macross2/gerwalkroid.htm It's a blink and you miss it design from the 4th or 5th episode, i think. It's rather stupid (then again MII was overall stupid and misunderstood as a series. Officially it's a sequel to the DYRL movie that premiered in the cannon timeline. I'm told it bombed in the box offices across the various colony fleets that received the data transfers for it...) :D

And here we go!

1. Snimm has the 40 ton Lacewing LAC-1W. I do like how cheap it is at under 1000BV, and having a jump range of 7 is very useful. I also like the dual MML-5s and the Light PPC. Its a good mix of weaponry but I wonder if would ever drain those magazines...
2. Tymers Realm has the 30 ton Gerwalk GWK-1, much lighter on the magazine capacity but it uses Clan Tech to compensate. I do like One Shot launchers on this, as it fits the wing mounted missiles.
3. Black_Knyght has our first LAM with the 40 ton Spectre SPC-T3. Cool. I must admit I've not played with LAMs before so this is a little unusual for me but damn, 2/3/15/23 movement?! I do wonder why LAMs never focused on optimizing their Airmech Modes more...Anyways the weaponry is fairly 'usual' from what I've seen. The dual MML-5s are always fun, and the ammunition amount is what I expect.
4. Smegish goes on the heavy end with an eighty ton Arrow Bird. And having twin Arrow IV missile launchers makes this less of a direct combat unit and more into mobile nuke launcher. That hops 120 meters at a time. I do have to wonder exactly What a Clan would be doing with this thing as the ATM-3s almost seem like an after thought.
5. Saberkatten goes back to the light end medium race with the 40 ton Leonardo LND-1. And wow this thing is all over the battlefield with that 300 meter jump range. I hope it keeps up that speed cause with only 5.5 tons of armor if it gets even looked at hard its gonna die. But as a mobile TAG unit its fairly cheap. I do wonder if having a C3 Slave would also benefit it.
6. Alsadius goes Clan with the 35 ton Issus ISS-1S. I like this a lot. Simple weaponry in an ER Large Laser and dual LRM-5s. And it just moves all over the place. The Fluff for this is just icing on the cake.
7. Shrapnel has another LAM with the 55 ton Halcyon. Shorter on the jump range but as a LAM it should be fairly quick when in Airmech mode. The weaponry is the ever popular paired MML-5s along with two typical Medium Lasers and a Small Laser. Fairly simple for weaponry
8. Sartris...uh...Well the I'm Too Hot! Is around 55 tons and has a Nova's idea of weaponry with a truly silly amount of ER Small Lasers, ER Medium Lasers and a pair of one shot SRM launchers. The SRMs better get fired first before you need to make an ammunition cook off roll. Its...average for speed? I don't know LAMs enough to judge that.
9. Liam's Ghost also goes LAM (I was really asking for LAM designs with that image wasn't I?) and its up to a high top speed and dual MML-3s and Streak SRM-2s with a medium pulse. I like this mix even if its a little bit light on armor.
10. Caedis Animus has a Blakist mech dreaming of being a LAM. I don't mind its not that effective as the Fluff has it being a failure of a design, so I really like the whole “Not completely effective” part of it.
11. Giovanni Blasini (took me two tries to write that correctly >.>) has a Dark Age Atushi and I like it as a fast TAG unit for directing artillery. The 270 jump range just adds to it and the Chameleon LPS makes it just a tad evil for directing any local ArrowIV missiles to their proper destinations.

So...Mostly its an assortment of lighter machines, with the notable exception of Smergish who built a jumping artillery unit...that I'd like to honestly pair with Giovanni Blasini's Atushi and have it run around a battlefield raining hellfire  >:D

So, my top three of these submissions.

3. Giovanni Blasini's Atushi. I love how fast this thing is for directing TAG strikes. It has a massive jump range and enough weaponry to tell the scouts to go away.

2. Caedis Animus's Girhook. I love this just for the fluff of it being a failure and showing why it doesn't work but where they were thinking when building it.

1. Alsadius's secondline Clan Issus. I love the light mix of weaponry and how fast it is. As a Clan mech I like its meant to be used by inferior pilots but its fast enough to chase down any raiders on a Clan World.

Well, I've got to see what I've got for the next challenge sometime tomorrow.  ;D

:D

The fluff came to me when I was looking for a name - I googled jumping insects, trying to find a name that wasn't already a well-known mech design(Flea, Grasshopper, Locust, etc.), and this guy came up. I'd seen pictures of the natural gears before, but I hadn't heard the name of the critter that has them before. When I saw the name, the battle was the first thing that came to mind, and I figured others might have the same thought process. I dug around for a clan that'd be a good fit for that backstory, and the Falcons seemed perfect, so I ran with it. Glad you liked it.

Late to the party but I thought a missile support LAM would be interesting.
With the double ammo bins for each of the missile systems alternate ammo is easy to carry.
The original design uses thunder ammo in the 5s to lay down mine fields on the approach, while the regular ammo is used with the clan tech flexible strike envelope from shorter range.
Due to its ability to fly it does not worry much about hampering it's own movement with the mines.

The SRM system on standard uses regular ammo and infernos to roast any non mech threat on the field.

The head is mounted with an under nose clan laser AMS system to save weight on ammo.
The targeting system is mounted in the right torso which can disable it, but make no mistake the actual system is under the nose!

Finally a C3 slave is mounted in the left torso to either guide missiles from a distance, or provide targeting data to friendlies while the warrior zips around the battlefield.

While the mech is plated in 10 tonnes of heavy plate the internals are understandably fragile due to the composite structure and the clan CASE system protecting the ammo bays.
When the armor goes thin it is recommended that the pilot bug out quick!
