Wormholes and other errata
« on: 09 September 2019, 20:47:38 »
Good evening, everyone,

I have a question or two to ask here, because I'm planning (more like plotting) a new BT campaign for my vict - I mean, players.

1.) Has anyone here ever used asteroids in their space maps?  Are there rules, or are they house-made?

2.) What would be a viable in-game mechanic for making a womhole?

Thanks, guys and gals.  I'm asking here because of a certain defunct House that-shall-not-be-named.

I don't think asteroids show up in space maps.  The only terrain ever talked about is the planet or screen launchers.

There are no in game mechanics for wormholes you will have to use regular old KF drives

Ok.  So, if I -wanted- to add asteroids, how would anyone here suggest I try it?

In a real asteroid field the individual pieces are so far apart that you couldn't see the next asteroid.
"Star Wars" asteroid fields are what the rings of Saturn look like.

BattleSpace had asteroid counters and rules for them.  Basically, if you enter an asteroid marked hex, you can't be shot by someone from outside (so it's cover).

Entering an asteroid space safely requires a successful piloting skill roll.  If you fail, your vessel takes 10 points of BattleSpace damage (100 points of BattleTech/AeroTech damage).  Insta-death for most AeroSpace Fighters, an ouchie for a DropShip, scuffs the paint on a Texas.

Good pilots can dart inside asteroid fields whenever they lose initiative, forcing the enemy to either forego firing or risk coming in after them.
"We have made of New Avalon a towering funeral pyre and wiped the Davion scourge from the universe.  Tikonov, Chesterton and Andurien are ours once more, and the cheers of the Capellan people nearly drown out the gnashing of our foes' teeth as they throw down their weapons in despair.  Now I am made First Lord of the Star League, and all shall bow down to me and pay homa...oooooo! Shiny thing!" - Maximillian Liao, "My Triumph", audio dictation, 3030.  Unpublished.

any many of the objects are much much smaller than a hex

Isn't the usual sign of flying through the asteroid belt simply an increased risk and rate of collisions with particles................................

So wouldn't it be realistic enough to just say that the entire map is asteroid field region, and every hex travelled through increases the likelihood of slamming into something (not visible on the map)?

The specific TN in each hex would depend on the debris density, but even a TN of 12 would simulate a dense field, each collision could cause 1d6 damage or something like that

There are rules in StratOps for asteroids, and they support Hollywood-style asteroid fields just fine, in both big rock and debris field flavors. I find it fun to scatter a few rocks around the playing area in pickup games so that there's at least a minimum amount of terrain for people to fold into their tactics.
