I'd go for it myself Kojak.  What's a little canon-deviation amongst friends and enemies  ^-^.

Well, I still haven't decided on the timeline re-jiggering yet, but I did finally start a new Tau Galaxy scenario tonight: a daring raid against Star of Hueys and their escorts, transiting through some ancient urban ruins just beyond the Trysil Pass. It's only a couple turns in but it should be moving forward in the near future.

Got another couple of turns in tonight and it got bloody; the Horses are down a Point of quad Procyons, and the Dominion is down one assault 'Mech with another two badly injured (one KO'd, another with a gyro hit and a critted foot). I have a feeling this one might be brutal for both sides.

Just wanted to pop in to say that this is still going, although I had to restart and somewhat redesign the scenario I was talking about in the last couple of posts. Taharqa and I have a gotten a ways into it over a few sessions, and it's gotten quite bloody. The combat has largely been characterized by rotating massed charges by quad Procyons loaded with tandem-charge SRMs against Dominion assault 'Mechs while SG-LRM-equipped Hippogriffs harry them from the rear, with a mixed binary of medium 'Mechs in support (honestly, the Protos have done the lion's share of the damage thus far). Two Stars from the 231st Mechanized Assault also hot-dropped in on either flank to close the walls of the trap, but they've just arrived a couple turns prior so they haven't had much effect yet (and the Rifleman IIC from one of the Stars managed to snake-eyes his roll and faceplant into a building, so that was real dignified...). I'll try to remember to score some screen-caps from the next session to post here.

I've recently been inspired by SteveRestless' excellent Rho Galaxy 'class pictures' to do some of my own for Tau Galaxy. Here's the first one.

Yeah, I'm really happy with how those turned out. Well, mostly, anyway, I re-did a couple of the ProtoMech units once I noticed they hadn't come out quite the way I wanted them.

Y'know, looking at this last post, I think I'm going to try to get in the habit of taking pics (cleaned up a bit) every session and posting them here, because I think they can really bring the missions to life in a way that the aftermath reports can't capture.

When the New Oslo arc wraps up in another two or three scenarios, Tau Galaxy will be redeploying, and so recently I did a write-up of the world they'll be traveling to: New Exford, where they'll be fighting alongside the Exiled Wolves and LCAF via contract warfare, helping to fend off a Jade Falcon invasion of the planet. As a sneak peak for that arc, here's the write-up. EDIT: That will be reposted once I get closer to the arc's commencement.

DARK WAS THE NIGHT, COLD WAS THE GROUND

Lillihammer, Christiana
New Oslo
Clan Hell's Horses Occupation Zone
12 November 3146

The Dominion's campaign to retake New Oslo had gotten off to something of a rocky start. Star Colonel Kalla's initial thrust at the Horses, while technically successful in dislodging them from the Trysil Pass, had cost the Freemen dearly. Galaxy Commander Johansen was aware he could not afford more such "victories", and so adopted a conservative approach, like the Ghost Bears of old. Unwilling to leave the umbrella of their artillery support, the entire Galaxy slowed to the crawling pace of their Huitzilopochtlis. As they gradually made their way through the winding mountain pass, the Dominion troops methodically reduced and demolished the various patches of automated defense turrets the Horses had seeded throughout in the preceding months. A week into their march, heavy rains began to fall on the pass, and the resulting mudslides slowed down the Hueys even more; it was nearly another week before Taiga Galaxy even began to emerge from the pass into the Ringsaker Valley. What few reconnaissance overflights they had managed to slip around Tau's combat air patrols showed that the nearby city of Lillihammer (its northern half still largely abandoned in the aftermath of the orbital bombardments of 2767) appeared to have no major Horse defenses beyond the autoturret batteries they'd previously encountered. Galaxy Commander Johansen ordered Star Colonel Ivar Oygard and the Second Freemen into Lillihammer to sweep the city and secure it for the rest of the Galaxy to decamp, giving them time to rest and refit for the final push into Haakonstad. Since Star Colonel Kalla had cost the Second Freemen its own artillery Trinary, Johansen found it fitting punishment to reassign her own Third Freemen's artillery to Oygard instead.

This, of course, was precisely the move Deacon Amirault had been waiting for Johansen to make. Tau's aerospace fighters had been ordered to allow a handful of recon passes over Lillihammer with only light harassment, just enough to keep Taiga from growing suspicious. The Second entered the abandoned northern portion of the city on the rainy evening of 12 November: Star Colonel Oygard and his command Trinary stayed at the rear to guard their Hueys, while the rest of the Cluster, including the artillery spotters, ranged forward to commence the bombardment of the defense batteries. As the vanguard began to engage with the turrets, the Horses sprang their ambush. Two medium 'Mech Stars and a Trinary of ProtoMechs suddenly powered up inside derelict buildings all around Oygard's position and burst forth, tearing into the stunned Dominion forces. Simultaneously, two more Stars of heavy and assault 'Mechs from the 231st Mechanized Assault Cluster came plummeting through the clouds to land on either flank of the Freemen lines, executing a precise avalanche drop from low orbit to fully box them in.

Star Colonel Oygard quickly rallied his forces, but they were surrounded and heavily outnumbered. Still, the cornered Rasalhagians fought like mad dogs, as wave after wave of Procyon-Qs fell upon them; the hyper-assault gauss rifles on their Hueys and Marauder IIC 7s proved to be particularly effective, shredding the quad ProtoMechs like a thresher through wheat. Only when Star Captain Rory Mitchell managed to corner the Star Colonel's Viking IIC and, after trading several devastating salvos, decapitate it with a blast from her Wakazashi's heavy autocannon, did their resistance finally begin to falter; the remaining Hueys tried to withdraw in the direction of the rest of the Cluster, but the thick mud left them helpless before the Horses. By the time the rest of the Second returned a few minutes later, it was already too late: Star Colonel Oygard was dead, his command Trinary shattered and their Galaxy's most elite artillery Star reduced to smoking wreckage. A lateral withdrawal by the Horses through another turret garden bought them enough time to exfiltrate from Lillihammer fully as the pursuing Second was forced to slow down to eliminate or bypass the turrets. Once again, Taiga Galaxy had technically emerged victorious -- Lillihammer was now undisputedly under their control -- but the cost had been far higher than anticipated. The Second Freemen Cluster was now all but defunct, and half of the Galaxy's artillery had been lost, effectively neutralizing what had been their biggest advantage over the Horse defenders at the outset of the campaign. All this at the cost of barely a Trinary of 'Mechs and ProtoMechs each to the Horses. It began to dawn on Galaxy Commander Johansen that Deacon Amirault was no ordinary Clansman, and that he could no longer delegate important tasks to his Star Colonels.

If he was going to retake New Oslo for the Dominion, he would have to do it himself.

Victory!

I'm just about to wrap up the scenario depicted above, and it was a bloody victory for the Horses. My ProtoMechs in particular really took it on the nose, as I discovered that HAGs apparently reliably turn Procyon-Qs into chunky salsa; I deployed the entirety of Trinary Zeta (35th Mechanized) and of the fifty Procyon-Qs that entered the field I don't think even twenty will be leaving it. I'll post a full write-up in the days to come, of course.

On that note, I think when I post that write-up I'm going to put in the place of the New Exford write-up, just in order to make the flow of the thread a little cleaner. I will re-post the New Exford stuff down the line when I get closer to actually starting that arc.

Alright, I've replaced the New Exford post with the write-up of the latest scenario. Enjoy.

Been lurking for awhile, stealing perusing for ideas for my own pre jihad 73rd Mechanized Cavalry Cluster that’s intended as an extremely mobile light strike force, one where the ProtoMech component actually has more firepower than the BattleMech component.

Just thought that the OP would like to know that their thread has spawned other ideas...

I'm very pleased to hear that, yes. Always glad to see when my work provides inspiration for others.

Okay, finally deep dove into the composition...was pretty surprised to see epona vehicles represented in only one cluster.

To be honest, and I know this is tantamount to heresy as a Horse player: I don't care for the Epona. I think it's way too thin-skinned for what it's intended to do, and outclassed by most of the non-Omni Clan hovertanks on offer these days. I did use a least a few because they're iconic for the Horses, but that's about the only reason why.

Truthfully I prefer Epona A over Bandit-C B, while happy with the Bandit-C A over the Epona C.

Weird, huh?

Epona don't scare people as much as the Bandit-C does...

Epona doesn't even carry infantry, except on the outside, Bandit-C's do...

Now I can make an awesome Nova Star with a 9/14 speed AND carry BA...

Epona: 2-A and 2-B w/ 5 Toads outboard one unit
Bandit-C: 2-A w/ 10 Toads, internally, 2-C w/ 10 Toads, internally
Hadur: 2 for that One-Two knockout

Configured: 2 E-A/ B-A combo, 2 E-B/ B-C combo, and the paired Hadur!

( That's an ERL, 2 SRM-2, 2 LRM-20, 2 ERM and a TAG  per Point -X2 and an UAC/10, 2 SSRM4 and 3 MPL per Point -X2, twin A4 launchers hugging paired ERM and AP Gauss(es?) each in the Arty Point. )

I haven't played this confiq. yet with the Hadur, but should be a nice support unit. I've played Epona / Bandit-C before... just replaced the Second Epona A for Hadur point... might replace a second unit, Bandit-C C? for a second Hadur point? Playtesting and all...

You know, I've never really looked very hard at the Bandit-C because I've always thought of it as a Wolf/Dragoon design. But I just checked Objectives: Clans and the Wolves were building them on Weingarten, which is in Horse hands now. And I'm looking at the design now and it really seems like a great hover IFV, so I think I might have to find a way to work some into Tau.

Yeah Bandit-C A is just a clan version of the regular Dragoon A variant, ERL vs. PPC. Just adds a SRM2 rack to turret and front to hose down Infantry and such.

And I much prefer the Bandit-C C variant to the otherwise whimpy Epona Prime.

Just remember these are NOT Omni, the Bandit-C is built with a 5 ton Infantry bay! Meaning any Mag-Clawed unit can ride them... from BA to Heavy Proto!

One thing I've had problems with in pairing Power Armor with Infantry Fighting Vehicles, like the Svantovit or the Bandit, is that I always wind up with a mismatch of vehicle carrying capacity to power armor, due to one Power Armor Point taking up half a Point of Power Armor cargo in vehicle capacity.

Sure, I suppose you could have one Star of ten IFVs carrying two Stars of Battle Armor, but I wanna mix my Points up within a Star.

Thus, I'm left with an IFV Point carrying two Points of Power Armor in a single Star. I'd love to use the other two Points the same way, but I'm left with a half Point of IFV capability.

I suppose I could use the other two Points as Nova Points, but there's always something that seemed very cheatery to me about claiming what would otherwise be two Points (an OmniMech Point and a Power Armor Point) as a single Point.
