Infantry and Anti-Mech Attacks
« on: 25 May 2019, 21:46:50 »
So we had an interesting question come up today at the game table.  Infantry/battle armor making and anti-mech attack; what happens to them after the attack?  My players who are far more familiar with classsic BT than I am, mentioned that in classic, said battle armor remains attached until they release or are knocked off.  From what I can see with the AS rules, there is no mention of it one way or the other (checked the errata as well.)

I judged it as the rule was written, damage is applied and the critical hit roll happens, but that's it.  After the movement phase, the mech that was subject to the attack could move away as normal, leaving the battle armor behind.  Did I get hat right? ???

There is no provision or exception outlined for infantry conducting an Anti-Mech attack, both units are free to move normally the following movement phase.  What happens in Total Warfare is irrelevant.

Kansas City players, or people who are just passing through the area, come join us at the Geekery just off Shawnee Mission Parkway for BattleTech!  Current days are Tuesdays in the afternoon and evening.  I can't make every single week, but odds are pretty good that somebody will be there.

Thank you for the quick answer sir.  Glad to know I got it right.  And sorry for the confusion.  I should have said battle armor from the get go.

Welcome!  In fact, I'm not aware of any forced-movement effects in Alpha Strike for any reason.  Units embarked on transports are, for all intents and purposes, not actually on the field and therefore not moving at all (as far as the movement phase cares).  Maybe something in the morale rules, or if you squint the Forced Withdrawal rules?

It's exactly the same for both battle armor and conventional infantry in this regard. You make the roll, apply any damage or crits, and then it's completely done.

Bear in mind, nothing says an anti-mech attack in Alpha Strike is actually a swarm attack: it could just as easily be a leg attack(even in TW, nobody gets carried along during one of those).

Group has a follow up question: are there any kind of anti-vehicle attacks, or is it only against mechs?

I don't have the book in front of me at this moment, but I'm fairly certain the exact same attack can be performed on tanks.

Would wige and vtol movement modes effect that? Since those are technically 'flying' and thus harder to climb onto.

Figure use the elevation rules regarding base-to-base. If the vee is too high to have base contact, then no AM. For everything else, that's what jump packs and/or grapple rods are for.
