I don't see how the original base "dragged it down", but the new one looks good too!
There were a couple of points brought up in regards to the old base:
The first was that it was too big and lacked focus.
The second was that all the tufts seemed to detract from the theme of the piece. And I used those tufts because the base was so big compared to the miniature.
The third was that the tufts weren't painted: essentially, with a mini of that caliber, EVERYTHING gets painted.
So when it comes down to it, composition is not something to skimp on. Verticality, staying on theme, lighting, etc is all very important. It was a good lesson because basing still gives me trouble; however, I keep improving.
