DESERT HARRIERS

ORIGINS

Titus McKenna’s Desert Harriers were funded as a part of the Lyran Commonwealth’s relief forces sent to support the newly formed military of the fledgling Rasalhague Republic during the Ronin War of 3034. Lyran brass decided against a significant show of force, partially due to fears of the Skye conflict spiraling out of control following the Republic’s declaration of independence. While plausible deniability was not an immediate concern, a mercenary unit with no overt affiliation to the Commonwealth was less likely to run the risk of causing diplomatic incidents with either the Combine or the Republic, something the Lyrans could scarcely afford at the time.

Split off from the veteran Third Donegal Guards (3rd Batallion, Harrier Company), the small unit would prove to be an invaluable asset to the Republic, loosely working together with prestigious units such as the 1st Tyr in securing the new state’s stability and independence. Donning the guise of a newly formed mercenary unit based out of Galatea, the Harriers started out under contract with a fighting force of two companies, one being made up of mixed-weight Battlemechs, the other a contingent of armor and artillery assets protected by two aerospace fighters.

The unit’s name and visuals harken back to the Third’s deployment in the late 20s on the arid world of Menkent, where they were defending the planet’s infrastructure from Combine raiding parties.

BRIEF HISTORY

THE RONIN WAR (3034)

Harvest

Their first large-scale engagement they would face off against the invading 5th Amphigean Light Guard on the ronin's former staging planet of Harvest. After the Declaration of Freedom by Elected Prince Haakon Magnusson, a celebratory "Liberty Gala" was to take place in the Grand Ohio Theatre of Columbus City. However, after local riots, the event was postponed by a week - and due to the proximity to the Lyran border, the Harriers were deployed to protect the political and civilian celebrities gathered at the event. With the 5th swiftly securing the planet Rodigo due to the initial chaos, they moved on to seize Harvest, seeking to secure the breadbasket of the fledgling FRR by delivering a decisive blow to the Lyran-aligned citizenship. An attempt to crash the party would be made by assaulting the building with mechanized infantry, or failing that, demolishing the south side of the theatre, which contained the lodges reserved for government officials and high ranking military personnel.

The Harriers anticipated this, and initially offered only minor resistance to the Amphigean DropShip group’s landing, harassing mechs and infantry with light elements and posting their assault-weight command lance as the lone guards for the theatre. Predictably enough, the experienced 5th did not fall for the Harriers' obvious distraction tactics and refused to engage in a chase or protracted firefight, proceeding at high speed towards their destination instead, with local militia only being able to tie up a pair of the lightweight Amphigean lances. After successfully driving off the 5th’s spotters, the Harriers sprung their trap on the ronin DCMS unit, when the bulk of their forces marched up to face the assault lance guarding the gala, seeking to surround and pound the ponderous machines into submission. While the mercenaries' light and medium lances pushed in towards the flanking Amphigean light lances (which were comprised mostly of Jenners and Locusts), two pairs of heavy tanks - two Demolishers and two Schrek PPC Carriers - powered up in the nearby streets to assist the Harrier command lance, which was under grave threat of being swarmed. The ambush on the Amphigeans’ lead medium lance led to the crippling of tai’sa Helen Cassidy’s Shadow Hawk, forcing her to eject within the first minute of combat. Initially underestimating the elite assault pilots’ precision in destroying fast moving targets, regardless of the sensitive environment, sho-sa Eiji Chambers led a costly withdrawal, losing an entire company of light ‘Mechs, and most of their medium command lance in the process. While managing to defend their target and oust the 5th for the remainder of the Ronin War, neither the Harriers nor the local militia were able to stop the remaining forces from retreating towards their heavily armed DropShips, and escaping from the site.

Intriguingly enough, their victory would remain in relative obscurity until a few years later, due to an interview with Annika Kyrkjebø, a beloved rasalhagian performer and media icon. Present at the Gala herself, she lauded the Harriers for their valiant defense, lamenting that she never really got the chance to thank them in person - a statement that shook up the population’s negative views about mercenaries, and resulted in a renewed stream of recruits inbound to their Galatean office.

The fighting over Harvest with the 5th Amphigean LAG would drag on until the end of April 3034. While the 5th was unable to secure Harvest for the ronin and lost another lance of light scouts during their encounters, their superior speed and agility made it ultimately impossible to pin them down until Lyran reinforcements forced them off planet. During their withdrawal, the ronin were able to hijack a significant shipment of provisions, however.

Rasalhague

Later on in the war, the Harriers replaced Dragon’s Breath as the assigned mercenary unit of the 1st Tyr. Harassment from their lighter elements were instrumental in leading the Twelfth Sun Zhang Cadre towards the Hakkøn complex on Rasalhague where the Tyr’s assault 'Mechs would quickly force the ronin units to surrender.

Radstadt

At the vanguard of the Tyr, they arrived first to assist the 1st Kavalleri in the pacification of Radstadt. There they gained an enmity towards Vinson’s Vigilantes, the mercenary unit assigned to defend the Wakazashi electronics complex. While the Vigilantes adhered to the letter of their contract, they refused to assist the militia against marauding ronin units during an emergency, citing a clause that allowed them to remain neutral unless the  complex came under direct threat. Such practice is commonplace among mercenary businesses who wish to stay afloat, exploiting the inexperienced negotiators of the newly formed Republic was not something the Harriers could condone, given their origin and nature of their own assignment.

Due to their diligent service to the people of the Republic and honorable conduct during the Ronin War, a single lance from the disbanded 1st Tyr regiment joined the unit after their regiment was disbanded, giving the Harriers a very solid powerbase to expand upon.

PEACE PERIOD (3035-39)

The Desert Harriers were one of the few mercenary units contracted by the new republic, with the primary assignments of rooting out fractured ronin units which have gone into hiding, and the training of planetary militia (on Harvest, for example), later even Kungsarmé recruits on planets such as Trondheim and Thule.

Alshain

Their exploits precluding the War of 3039 peaked with a dubious raiding mission on Alshain, close to the Rasalhague border. Following the earlier success of deep mercenary raids within the Combine as a preliminary to the offensive, a window of opportunity presented itself when the 6th Alshain Regulars were deployed to the front (to Alnasi), leaving the planet relatively unguarded. The Harriers’ target was an armored train carrying Panther and Dragon ‘Mechs to the spaceport from the Bergan Industries ‘Mech factory complex seated on the planet. Ironically, the information on the supply line reached Lyran officials from within the corporation itself - with the delivery changing hands at the facility already, the only party who would be really inconvenienced was the DCMS. General Christian Månsdottir had full knowledge about the raid, and - in spite of the Elected Prince protesting against allowing Lyran-affiliated mercenaries to abuse the FRR’s neutrality - allowed the Harriers to use Altenmarkt as their supply base and drop off point, along with providing neutral transportation. In exchange, the Kungsarmé would receive the majority of the spoils from the raid, urging the mercenaries to turn the hit and run mission into a full blown heist. While on a tight schedule and fighting outnumbered, the veterans under the command of the recently promoted Hauptmann Shadi Haynaba conducted a ferocious attack on the supply train, making short work of the ill-prepared militia forces and leaving with a company’s worth of fresh BattleMechs and two containers worth of replacement parts, including two dozen Lord’s Light PPCs. Most of these war materials would be returned to Altenmarkt and distributed quietly among the Kungsarmé regiments, leaving Magnusson none the wiser.

WAR OF 3039

Altais

Impressed by their success and discretion during the Ronin Wars, the LCAF hired them to help stabilize their control over Altais, hunting down rogue elements from the dispersed and mangled 2nd Ghost Regiment, which continued to harass Lyran positions despite the inital success of the task force which included the 8th Donegal Guards, Dragonslayers and the famous Gray Death Legion. Their role in the ensuing conflict was marginal compared to the more massive mercenary commands, and while they were able to retain a certain degree of command independence due to the inexperienced Lyran liaison officer assigned to them, the 2nd Ghost taught them harsh lessons in urban guerilla warfare, the most painful of these being an ambush conducted by two Dragons and two Hunchbacks masked by a prototype high-power ECM suite. The devastating hail of fire unleashed upon the lead 'Mech of the Harrier formation resulted in an SRM-6 ammo explosion within McKenna’s Battlemaster, causing him to eject and leaving the unit’s leader crippled and hospitalized for the remainder of the year. Seething, his second in command, Kommandant Arno Jansen engaged in a devastating battle with the former yakuza, with no regards to civilian safety or damage to assets, exemplified by him deliberately causing a multi-story office building to collapse onto one of the retreating Dragons.

Their task was a long and gruelling one, with their deployment lasting until November when the inevitable DCMS counterattack forced them off the planet. The great personal sacrifice and crippling injury of Hauptmann-Kommandant Titus McKenna caused Lyran brass to review their strict salvage clauses and allow the Harriers to replace the commanding officer’s destroyed ‘Mech with a mangled BattleMaster BLR-1C recovered from the 2nd Ghost Regiment. While a lot of its components were destroyed during the fighting, the fairly intact Command Console allowed his daughter, Cadet Deirdre McKenna to take over piloting duties while her crippled father would continue to act as the de-facto commander on the battlefield.

POST-WAR PERIOD (3040-45)

Holmsbu

The Harriers had technically conducted a breach of contract by causing excessive damage to civilian infrastructure during the late war of '39, putting a dent into their otherwise good status and reputation with the MRB. Fortunately, the generous terms and numerous extensions of their contract by the Lyran Commonwealth repeatedly making use of an emergency-powers clause during the exhausting conflict netted them with enough C-Bills to not just recover their losses, but to expand their unit significantly. With the near death of their commander however, the unit was in desperate need of recovery, and thusly settled for a series low-risk missions within the FRR to lick their wounds and integrate the large influx of material and personnel in a smooth fashion, ready to face the adversities of the years to come.

As of the spring of 3045, the unit is on garrison duty under FRR contract, training and reinforcing the 7th and 8th Corrugated Lancers on Holmsbu.

UNIT DESCRIPTION

Name: DESERT HARRIERS
Era: Late Succession Wars
Faction: Mercenary
Origin: Lyran Commonwealth
Parent Unit: Third Donegal Guards/3rd Batallion/Harrier Company
MRB Rating: D (3034) / B- (3037-3039) / B+ (3040-3045)

Reinforced Batallion/Veteran/Reliable
CO: Hauptmann-Kommandant Titus McKenna
XO: Kommandant Arno Jansen

CO/Scorpion Company: Hauptmann Shadi Haynaba
CO/Jackal Company: Hauptmann Tim Norwood
CO/Scarab Company: Hauptmann Aðalsteinn Hallúr
CO/Cobra Company: Hauptmann John Barnhill

Insignia: A white, crescent-shaped bird of prey over a black and orange sunburst.

Color Scheme: The Harriers' Mechs are painted in a light desert camouflage pattern  - khaki, brown, and ivory, with thin anthracite-grey lining at the edge of some patches. The unit's patch is displayed prominently on the left torso or upper left arm of the 'Mech. It is customary among senior pilots to honor their previous commands by alluding to their old regimental patches. Former pilots of the Third Donegal Guards use an inverted set of scales, while MechWarriors previously serving in the 1st Tyr adorn their 'Mechs legs with a bold, white Tyr rune set upon a blue field.

Uniform: The unit's battle dress matches the camouflage pattern of their 'Mechs, with officers sometimes wearing a tactical jacket in addition. The patch is displayed on the left upper arm. Their parade dress uniform is beige with a bluish-black beret - a peaked cap is worn instead by MechWarriors and officers of all braches, while the senior officers' uniform is coal grey and black. After continued protest, the formal requirement for women to wear a skirt with their parade dress was waived in the recent years - though the petition to change the intimidating colors of the brass seems to be of little concern to high command.

Motto: The unofficial motto of the batallion is Fág an Bealach (‘Clear the Way!’), although the original gaelic phrase has fallen out of favor over time. The new, official motto reads On Wings of Fury, better reflecting the batallion's name and insignia, as they are notably devoid of allusions to the Donegal Province or its irish heritage. Intriguingly, Cadet Deirdre McKenna was one of the most vocal critics of the old motto, calling it 'dated and tacky'.

Contract Requirements:

- The good publicity received in the aftermath of the gala on Harvest in 3034 in addition to their reputable Lyran origins helped them become one of the few mercenary commands to receive reasonable contract conditions within the fledgling FRR. It should come as no surprise that the Harriers are quite wary about accepting contracts from other employers than the Lyran Commonwealth or the FRR due to their exposure to other merc companies and their knowledge about the often dubious history of conduct of other Great Houses. Their reliance on external transportation only reinforces this notion.

- While having kept their recruitment office on the declining mercenary's star of Galatea open for a longer time than most reputable mercenary companies, the murder of renowned duelist Katie Keane (First Leutnant Leda Keane's older sister) understandably caused them to cut ties with the world completely. As of 3045, they are in the process of relocating their main recruitment office to the world of Outreach. Since the dissolution and merger of Katie Keane's 'Mech stable with the unit, command has been pushing for contracts with shared salvage rights to capitalize on their ability to integrate advanced components into their equipment with the excellent personnel under Chief Warrant Officer Viktor Tupolev's supervision.

Quirks and Trivia:

- The initiation ritual started by one of the infantry platoons to haze a recruit into playing a tune on a tin flute and endure a smattering of rotten eggs if the song (almost inevitably) turns out to be bad, has been slowly spreading to the tankers and MechWarriors within the batallion. HQ has been considering clamping down on the practice, First Lt. Rogan Kerry reportedly saying it is “unprofessional and reflects badly on the unit as a whole”.

Unit Traditions:

- The unit’s parade and infantry marching tune is a version of Hell on the Wabash, complete with fife and snare drums. The Harriers’ recruitment division commissioned an orchestral version for their new ad to be broadcasted on Outreach. The tune was performed by the Columbus City Symphonic Orchestra of Harvest, and has a more somber, heroic tone to it than the upbeat marching song.

- The guerilla tactics used by the 2nd Ghost Regiment of the DCMS against them on Altais taught the Harriers quite a few harsh lessons in urban warfare. One particularly heavy loss was the death of the beloved First Leutnant Bear Brunson. Former members of his Heavy Lance commemorate his untimely passing by adding a triplet of claw marks onto the left torso of their 'Mechs.

HQ has been considering clamping down on the practice, with First Lt. Rogan Kerry reportedly saying it is “unprofessional and reflects badly on the unit as a whole”.

PERSONAL FILES

HIGH COMMAND

Quote
Hauptmann-Kommandant Titus McKenna
Callsign: <CONDOR>
Occupation: MechWarrior (Elite)
Homeworld: Tharkad, Lyran Commonwealth
Affiliation/Studies: LCAF, Nagelring
Mech/Vehicle: Battlemaster BLR-1C
Status Report: Operational
Personal File:

Appearance: A disfigured man with hard features, strong cheekbones, thin lips and piercing cold eyes. His entire face, scalp and most of his body have suffered second and third degree burns due to a fireball caused by an ammo explosion - it is only due to the tremendous efforts of the surgeons of the Lyran medical corps that they managed to reconstruct his skin into something resembling a visage. He began to wear a wig after his recovery.

Demeanor: Hauptmann-Kommandant Titus McKenna is best described as thoughtful, reserved and silent, with an air of unquestioned authority. His cold demeanor and fairly stiff disposition is more intimidating than his personality would suggest - he is no stranger to kindness and has a reputation of treating his soldiers fairly and with deep care. His injury has caused him to be more private and reclusive than before - some also attribute this to the troubled relationship he shares with his daughter.

Born on the Steiner capital world Tharkad, Titus McKenna grew up in a prestigious, wealthy family with century old military traditions. As the son of decorated LCAF officers Colonel Kaptain Hellmuth McKenna and Hauptmann-Kommandant Keegan McKenna, the young Titus was provided with access to the best military education avaliable in Lyran space. Following his father, his MechWarrior training began at the age of nine, and (with a break until his graduation in Nagelring) ended as he joined the Third Donegal Guards as a young Leutnant, working his way up to the rank of Hauptmann during his deployment to Styk. After ten successful years and a fairly unspectacular career in the Steiner military, he married a young, loving woman named Marie Ashcroft, a brigade surgeon serving in the Third. They had a daughter together by the name of Deirdre - in a joint agreement, Marie returned to Tharkad to care for the child. Her husband’s visits soon became scarce however as the Fourth Succession War broke out, the deployment of the Third Donegal Guards to active duty essentially tearing the family apart. Bad turned to worse when Marie succumbed to a severe infection. The loss turned the happy, talkative McKenna into a grieving, quiet man who had to make the choice between advancing his career and caring for his daughter. Although his pride would never lead him to admit it, his inability to deal with Marie’s passing and helplessness regarding the raising of Deirdre caused him to bury himself in assignment after assignment, ironically leading to his acceptance of the proposal made by Colonel Kaptain Walter Lestrade when he approached him to found a clandestine unit to remain covertly involved in the FRR’s affairs during the Ronin War. He passed the responsibility of raising Deirdre on to her retired grandparents, a less than ideal arrangement that caused everyone in the family a lot of misery in the years to come.

To many of his peers, Titus McKenna is a true workhorse and a prime example of the Lyran military excellence so few possess nowadays. In reality, a lot of this comes from his long and straight service record and his calm disposition. In truth, it is fair to say that McKenna fell short of the expectations of his parents, and his decision to accept the mercenary’s life has soured the relations with many of his more distinguished peers.Yet while perhaps not one of the most brilliant, inspired or charismatic leaders, his impeccable integrity and knack at “doing the right thing at the right time” (at least when it comes to military matters) have earned him a die-hard, loyal fellowship and an excellent reputation to boot. He is known as a hard negotiator who pays a great deal of attention to the fine print and only takes up on a contract if he feels all of his bases covered, including autonomous command, salvage rights and perhaps most importantly, having the moral high ground. At the end of the day, he is a deeply troubled man however, whose shadows seem to have caught up with him after his crippling injury suffered on Altais, leaving him unable to pilot a ‘Mech without the assistance of the very daughter he refused.

Trivia:

By adopting the callsign ‘Condor’ in a fit of dark humor after an ancient terran vulture with a featherless and rather unsightly head, it quickly became a custom in the unit to choose callsigns based on some peculiar quality or humorous remark made by someone.

Quote
Cadet Deirdre McKenna
Callsign: <SELKIE>
Occupation: MechWarrior (Regular)
Homeworld: Tharkad, Lyran Commonwealth
Affiliation/Studies: LCAF, Nagelring (exmatriculated due to self withdrawal)
Mech/Vehicle: Battlemaster BLR-1C
Status Report: Operational
Personal File:

Appearance: Deirdre is tall and wispy, with a crown of auburn curls adorning her thin-featured face. She shares her cold eyes with her father, though her more delicate brows suggest a friendlier disposition.

Demeanor: Obstinate, fierce, sometimes almost sullen. Speaks her mind freely (and loudly), isn’t shy to express her opinions whether they are relevant or not. Likes to challenge authority and loathes arbitrary restrictions and regulations. Despite this, she has a rarely seen dreamy and aloof side she only shares with the few friends she made during her short time in the unit.

An only child, Deirdre lost her mother early on due to a freak medical accident involving a severe infection. The price her father paid to keep his company and career afloat was to leave the girl in the care of au pairs and her strict grandparents, a grave decision fostering a lot of resentment within her over the years. Feeling unwanted for a lot of her life, Deirdre has grown up to be a survivor, a fiercely independent woman with rebellious tendencies, constantly battling her abandonement issues and deep seated doubt of self-worth. Her obsession with surpassing her father in his achievements is often apparent and quite worrisome, the most jarring example would be her opting out of pursuing the dream to become a marine biologist. She instead went through the struggle to gain admittance to the Nagelring, taking on numerous extra classes and press on to become a star cadet. She cut her career short when her father suffered his crippling injury on Altais in 3039; instead of finishing her studies she resigned from the prestigious academy, forsaking the opportunity of a lifetime to help out the man who treated her as a footnote during her early years. Suffice to say, the process of reconnecting is proving to be tiresome and painful, and as such it is one of the most touchy topics within the batallion.

Trivia:

- She loves scuba diving and pursues her hobby whenever she gets the chance. Her callsign alludes to this, and was put forward by First Leutnant Henriika Luttinen as she felt that most of the other suggestions were either too cheeky or too inappropriate.

- Deirdre is somewhat of a fluke in that she had no real ambitions of her own for embracing the mercenary’s life or being a MechWarrior in the first place, which she managed to bridge with her natural talent and undeniable intellectual capacities. She has seen no real combat action however, and there are concerns among the brass that her stubborn disposition is a mask that can shatter easily when the missiles start flying. It remains to be seen whether she comes around to embrace her legacy or resign her commission once her father retires from service.

Kommandant Arno Jansen
Callsign: <RIPPER>
Occupation: MechWarrior (Elite)
Homeworld: Tharkad, Lyran Commonwealth
Affiliation/Studies: LCAF
Mech/Vehicle: Cyclops CP-11-A
Status Report: Operational
Personal File:

Appearance: Is ironically quite similar in build to the ‘Mechs he favors - towering, massive and astoundingly athletic, even in his fifties. His size made him request a transfer of ‘Mechs after a single test run with an Assassin as he could scarcely fit into the cockpit. He is blonde of hair with a strong forehead, a boorish look on his face betraying his quick wits and incredible reaction times.

Demeanor: Brawn and brains are not mutually exclusive when it comes to Hauptmann Jansen. He is a grizzled veteran who survived over a hundred engagements. He has first hand experience as a foot soldier and is known to care a lot about the grunts within the unit, and serves as a great inspiration to any infantryman who seeks to pilot a ‘Mech in the future. His extensive usage of steroids to increase performance and aggression during his time as a marine are haunting him to this day, with him almost becoming a liability during the tragic events which transpired on Altais. Nowadays he is a gruff, no-nonsense man obsessed with strength and excellence. He thinks military protocol is a neccessary evil, yet fully knows that gaining a command position within the LCAF is often not a product of personal achievements. Despite his sometimes intimidating demeanor, he’s perhaps the most approachable of the ‘old guard’ who hail from the Third.

Not everyone born on the capital world of the Lyran Commonwealth is fortunate enough to enjoy metropolitan lifestyle. Jansen was born into a family with a struggling logging business within what remained of the once vast continental taiga of the planet. Used to hard labor from a very young age, his story as a prospective MechWarrior began with him having to pilot the family’s rugged Crosscut after his father suffered a crippling accident, a stray splinter perforating his heart. Though he survived miraculously, the injury would haunt him for the remainder of his life - Arno was a mere 17, when he finally succumbed to cardiac failure. In a fateful decision, the young man decided to scrap the business and use the money raised to start a military career that would span over two decades. He served in many units, starting out as a marine within one of the infantry regiments of the Donegal province - fortunately, his regiment would be one sent to support the invasion force in the campaign known as Operation: GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG, which would really test his mettle. While his illicit usage of steroids and combat stimulants brought him to the border of being drummed out of service, his is unlikely achievement as a marine sergeant to disable and capture a 5th LAG Panther with the help of his squad earned him a position within the 3rd Lyran Regulars - not as an infantryman, but as a MechWarrior. Through sheer dedication and hard work he managed to not only become proficient at his new assignment, but to be offered a transfer to the elite unit that is the Third Donegal Guards within a few years of service. There, Jansen befriended his future commanding officer, Titus McKenna, who bore the rank of Hauptmann at this time, and used his awesome fighting determination to become his second in command during the Ronin Wars.

Trivia:
- He received his callsign early in his career due to his favored party trick of ripping a phone book in half. Though he rarely does it anymore, it is suffice to say that the nickname stuck with him after over twenty years, so much that people rarely call him by his proper name anymore.

- Jansen often spends his free time with the infantrymen, be it exercise or recreational activities. He is very vocal about the woefully low throw weight of the unit’s current infantry compliment, with others slowly coming to the same conclusion, including veterans such as Hauptmann Haynaba and First Leutnant Evans.

First Leutnant Rogan Kerry
Callsign: <FLASH>
Occupation: MechWarrior (Veteran)
Homeworld: Donegal, Lyran Commonwealth
Affiliation/Studies: LCAF, Nagelring
Mech/Vehicle: Marauder MAD-5R
Status Report: Operational
Personal File:

Appearance: A hard-faced man with red hair, strong hands and a subtle blush on his cheeks and nose. Puts a lot of emphasis on appearances and personal grooming.

Demeanor:Proud and haughty, Kerry is a textbook example of a typical Lyran officer, seemingly only putting up with the realities of mercenary life due to the unit’s prestigious origins. In truth he values loyalty and professionality above all else, and expects his peers to behave with the dignity of enlisted LCAF officers, dismissing the notion that the unit is essentially a business endeavor, not a house regiment under Steiner rule. If people manage to meet his expectations, they find him to be friendly, sociable and eloquent, a man of refined tastes expressing himself with a colorful and rich vocabulary - otherwise he is prone to snub his subordinates, and reprimand them quickly for overstepping boundaries.

A son of fair Donegal, Rogan never really got to know the world he was born to, instead growing up on deployment, surrounded by his father’s social circle of high ranking officers and their families. A late child, his father served as an advisor to Colonel Walter Lestrade (and subsequently Col. James Lancelot Hipper) of the Third Donegal Guards, raising his son to continue his legacy, fully expecting him to become the first Colonel in the history of the family. Imparted early with a sense of duty, honor and staunch patriotism, the young Rogan proved to live up well to the expectations, his inquisitive and perceptive personality being instrumental in grasping complex strategic and tactical concepts. His privileged status provided him with ample opportunity to practice piloting a BattleMech, yet it was not until his graduation at the Martial College of Donegal that he fully warmed up to the idea. While he never proved to be a pilot who could compete with the likes of Keane or Jansen in raw talent, he is truly at home coordinating scouting efforts and has been a trusted advisor to McKenna for twenty odd years now.

Trivia:

- He is a collector of vintage fragrances and a connossieur of expensive whiskey, reportedly keeping samples from every world the unit visits, though Glengarry Black Label remains his favorite to this day.

Quote
First Leutnant Henriika Luttinen
Callsign: <CHAT>
Occupation: MechWarrior (Veteran)
Homeworld: Holmsbu, Free Rasalhague Republic
Affiliation/Studies: LCAF, FRR, Radstadt Academy
Mech/Vehicle: Longbow LGB-7Q
Status Report: Operational
Personal File:

Appearance: Tall and thin, with a pale nordic complexion. Her face is lightly freckled with delicate eyebrows and a prominent, characteristic nose. Henriika is described as beautiful by many of her peers.

Demeanor: Henriika only ever puts on a serious face for the photographer. She’s all smiles otherwise, quite sociable and beloved by many within the unit. A bit too mellow perhaps, she prefers to dodge arguments instead of engaging in them. Even though she doesn’t like being in the spotlight all too much, she does see herself as someone close to the heart of the community and has troubles accepting that she can’t be liked by everyone. Overtly kind and pleasant, it would come as a surprise how aloof and disconnected she can get when it comes to her warlike occupation. With little live combat experience, her inclusion into the command lance came as a surprise to many within the unit - it remains to be seen whether she’s up to the challenge.

Born in the city of Redwood on Holmsbu, Henriika was still in her early teens when the Republic seceded from the Draconis Combine. Wealth and intellectual prowess run strong in her family - the Luttinens are reserved traditionalists, who trace their finnish heritage all the way back to ancient Terra’s city of Helsinki. While largely left untouched during the war, the news of the atrocities committed by the rogue DCMS units nevertheless reached the remote world aswell, leaving a defining impression upon Henriika. A childish, yet incredibly strong admiration for the 1st Tyr and their exploits led her to hold onto the dream of enlisting as an officer in the Kungsarmé, a worrisome tendency which garnered little support from her pacifistic parents. Her decision to cling to her dream drove her into self-imposed isolation - though a dreamy and somewhat airheaded teen, she doubled her efforts during the late years of comprehensive school to gain entry at the Radstadt Academy, taking up a part-time job as a museum assistant to help finance her relocation. Her life turned around during her academy days, the shy and somewhat aloof teen becoming a socialite in her own right and quickly warming up to her like-minded peers. Unfortunately her bustling social life almost caused her to lose her tuition. Always struggling with cold military theory, Luttinen performed a lot better in practical field exercises. Her talent at engaging targets at extreme ranges became apparent very quickly, along with her grasp on the workings of missile systems. Partaking in joint training exercises between her academy cadre and the Harriers in 3042, former 1st Tyr veteran Gustav Lund personally vouched for her after she managed to repeatedly paint his Awesome in a smattering of blank LRMs.

Trivia:

- An avid social butterfly and always a little hesitant to commit herself to a hobby, Henriika gave in to the nagging of her many circles and settled with taking up archery lessons in the end.

- Going with the trend of the other FRR MechWarriors, her first given callsign was 'Álf' (Elf or Fairy) - it only took her one training mission however to earn her current one instead for her somewhat overly communicative attitude on combat comms. Hptm.-Komm. McKenna was in a particularly sullen mood that day, and according to the few present at the incident, he reprimanded her so harshly that she kept shaking in her boots whenever he passed her by for the remainder of the month.

Callsign: <LUCKY>
Occupation: MechWarrior (Elite)
Homeworld: Menkent, Lyran Commonwealth
Affiliation/Studies: LCAF, Menkent Militia
Mech/Vehicle: Warhammer WHM-6R
Status Report: Operational
Personal File:

Appearance: Athletic woman of average height and healthy build. Short, black hair, deep brown eyes, strong and expressive eyebrows. When not smiling or laughing outright, she always has a playful smirk on her lips at the very least.

Demeanor: Shadi Haynaba has lost more friends and relatives in her life than most people in the unit, yet her raw talent and high spirits have kept her afloat for over a decade, awarding her a vastly successful military career. While she treats her comrades like family and her playful, nonchalant attitude is quite contagious, her relationships are paradoxically often cautious and noncommitmal, likely due to the trauma she suffered during her young years. She’s quick to cut anyone down to size she considers arrogant or in over their head, and can’t stand pompous displays of rank, having repeatedly tried to wiggle her way out of showing up in full dress uniform on parades, her attempts gaining some notoriety with the medical staff over the years.

Few would suspect today that the cheery Haynaba is a war orphan who emerged from a past filled with blood, smoke and tears. While she never talks about the hell she went through in detail, her personnel file reads no living relations, and the frequent Combine raids on her homeworld suggest a quite tragic story. She has been noted for saying that she joined the Menkent militia with the wish to become a warrior, so that she would never have to feel helpless again. Working as an AsTech in her teens, her freakishly good performance during vehicle testing have landed her a seat as a Vedette Tank gunner at the tender age of 16. Her career has been one of the most steep in the entire unit. Barely above the legal age of enlistment among her Steiner peers, she has answered the Harriers’ initial recruitment call on Menkent, eager to escape militia duty and taking the fight to the Dragon. Though notorious for disregarding protocol and cultivating a concerningly relaxed atmosphere within the unit, Haynaba is someone who has an undeniable, rogueish charm that makes her quite likeable, especially among younger members. Sociable, quick-witted and blessed with a refreshing penchant for sarcasm, she used to be the “class clown” until her command responsibilities required her to adopt a more serious approach to the life she chose. An avid tinkerer who is known to push double shifts with the tech team, she often thinks outside the box and finds innovative solutions to complex problems in the blink of an eye. She prefers open terrain and long range weapons, having piloted a Blackjack until the untimely demise of her good friend First Lt. Bear Brunson, whose Warhammer she proudly pilots and tends to ever since.

Trivia:

- One might think that her peculiar callsign comes from the five headshots she scored during her decade of service - it is rather tied to an uncanny winning streak in poker, however.

- Has a love for sports, especially basketball and soccer.

First Leutnant Leda Keane
Callsign: <SPHINX>
Occupation: MechWarrior (Elite)
Homeworld: Galatea, Lyran Commonwealth
Affiliation/Studies: LCAF, Nagelring
Mech/Vehicle: King Crab KGC-0000
Status Report: Operational
Personal File:
Trivia:

Appearance: Short and energetic - dark complexion, faint green eyes and a piercing gaze. She almost never smiles, rarely even blinks for that matter - coaxing a smirk out of her is an achievement in itself. Prominent rings around her eyes suggest that she often pushes herself beyond exhaustion.

Demeanor: Has always been an overachiever,  imposing impossibly  high standards upon both her peers and herself. She can be described as quite arrogant, her often condescending and disdainful attitude causing many incidents during her time of service. This tendency shifted from bad to worse after facing the disastrous and painful loss of her sister, causing her to become abrasive by default to anyone but her small circle of trusted comrades.  Regardles, she is a warrior through and through, with impeccable integrity and a strong sense of honor.

Leda Keane hails from a fiercely competitive environment. Born to a deeply indepted, struggling upper class family on Galatea as the youngest of a triplet of sisters (derisively called ‘Caleb’s Tramps’), she was trained from a young age as a MechWarrior and a duelist, taking turns in piloting the family’s ancient Orion with Aliyah and Katie. Her father, Caleb Amadé was a ruthless, egotistical and troubled man, a former ace who gambled away most of his earnings, turning Oona Keane, their noble-born mother miserable and withdrawn. Treated more like an investment than a person, the young woman was whipped into partaking in the notorious Galatean bloodsports early on in her life, winning her first live bout at the age of fourteen. Appalled by these tendencies, yet too intimidated by Caleb’s tyrannical attitude, Oona used her position as the financial manager of her household to quietly put aside some of their winnings, saving up for tuitition fees and bribes to allow her incredibly talented daughters to receive the formal, high level education they deserve. Soon after Caleb died from a fall during a drunken stupor, Aliyah was sent off to enter the Martial College of Donegal, leaving Katie and Leda behind. While her mother was able to convince Leda to walk a similar path and leave the dregs of Galatea, Katie has made some dubious friends and used her earnings to fund a gladiatoral stable instead, similar to the ones on Solaris. Raised to always shoot for the stars, Leda strived to outdo her sisters in every way, and assisted Katie’s endeavors until she managed to gain entry into the most prestigious academy in Lyran space.

She pushed herself to the limits during her academy years and graduated among the top of her class from the Nagelring, becoming hooked on amphetamines and performance enhancing drugs in the process. She joined the Third Donegal Guards as a young officer under Titus McKenna, shortly before his unit became detached from the parent formation and called on to serve as a Lyran proxy in the Ronin Wars. Leda quickly gained notoriety as the unit’s ace, scoring three confirmed ‘Mech kills in the first engagement alone, racking the count up to eleven during the course of the war. Despite her conflicting personality and addiction problems she became a fearsome and indispensable juggernaut with a reputation well beyond that of her own unit. A tendency which remained unbroken until many years later, when she received word from home that Katie had been brutally murdered by an unknown assailant prior to a high stakes bout. Seething and furious, Leda asked for her suspension and was granted extended leave by Hptm.-Komm. McKenna to take care of her affairs on Galatea. Sadly, she was left none the wiser - fearing for her mother’s life, she fought hard to convince Oona to sell off the family’s property and join Aliyah whose unit, the First Lyran Guards were stationed long-term on the world of Maestu, far to the galactic north from their ancestral home. She in turn struck an agreement with the personnel of Katie’s stable and disbanded it, with the promise of personally negotiating new contracts with the brass of her mercenary outfit, offering them a chance to start a new life away from the mercenary’s star that fell from grace.

Trivia:

- First Leutnant Keane is without a doubt the single best MechWarrior in the entire Harrier roster. During her years of service she never once lost a ‘Mech and recovered seven, her confirmed kills numbering thirty one, not including wrecked vehicles or downed aircraft which would put her well over a hundred. Her profile is that of a duelist, preferring isolated engagements where the value of personal skill increases exponentially. She only ever pilots reliable, heavy designs with lots of redundant weapon systems and as much staying power as possible.

- Unknown to most, she connected with Hptm. Tim Norwood over her loss, forming an unlikely friendship. While he has turned his back on the underworld, Norwood agreed to aid the investigation around Katie’s murder, calling up contacts from his shady past to find out who is responsible for the heinous act.

- Her rivalry with her commanding officer is as old as her entry into the unit. The two gained a grudging respect for each other during their numerous engagements, and while their relationship is still very competitive, Haynaba is noted by many for “making the Sphinx smile”, though she told nobody how she managed to pull the impressive feat off.

JACKAL COMPANY

Quote
Hauptmann Tim Norwood
Callsign: <ROOK>
Occupation: MechWarrior (Elite)
Homeworld: Galatea, Lyran Commonwealth
Affiliation/Studies: LCAF, Galatean underworld
Mech/Vehicle: Thug THG-10E
Status Report: Operational
Personal File:

Appearance: A massive man with a pudgy face and deep set, porcine eyes. His large mouth is almost always curled into a frown.

Demeanor: Despite his attempt at turning his life around, Norwood is still alarmingly cold and dry, to the point of ruthlessness, his dark humor and often coarse attitude making him perhaps the most controversial person in the Harrier roster. His single strongest attribute is his dependability. In some perspective he is as hard as nails and it can be said that he prefers to punch through a wall rather than scale it.

Tim Norwood’s spotless record and responsibilities paint him as a model officer who only parted with the LCAF due to their decision of forming a clandestine unit. In truth, his past lies at the fringes of society. Unknown to most of his contemporary peers, he worked as a cleaner, enforcer and gladiator during his youth for the Haggerston Firm, a powerful Galatean crime syndicate deeply involved in gambling on bloodsport matches on the declining planet. Feeling threatened by accusations of duplicity and a suspected plot to eliminate him, Norwood began to spin his own web of intrigue against the firm, setting up a massive crackdown that ended the syndicate’s crime spree within a matter of days. After turning himself in and confessing to charges including battery, burglary and aggravated assault, he was sentenced to several years in prison, his sentence mitigated by his confession and full compliance with the authorities. After his release he approached his uncle, Leutnant-General Brandon Layten, to help him set up a new life as a military man, his crime record rendering him unable to enlist not only within the Skye March, but the LCAF as a whole. Layten subsequently referred him to his colleague, the newly appointed mercenary leader Titus McKenna, with the caveat that his new employer would be informed wholly and truthfully about Norwood’s past beforehand. Handling his new assignment like a professional from the get-go, the former recruit has since become a battle hardened veteran, reaching the rank of Hauptmann and leader of Jackal Company within the course of eleven years.

Trivia:

- He speaks a strange, slurred dialect best described as soft, slow and dark - and very british in origin.

- The trained administrator might notice that his record has been tampered with if not outright scrubbed.

- Another little known fact is that he requires regular medication for his heavy hand tremors and strong antidepressants due to the constant psychological trauma he suffered during his criminal days.

First Leutnant Alice Evans
Callsign: <KNIVES>
Occupation: MechWarrior (Elite)
Homeworld: Coventry, Lyran Commonwealth
Affiliation/Studies: LCAF, Coventry Military Academy
Mech/Vehicle: Wolverine WVR-6R
Status Report: Operational
Personal File:

Appearance:Short and squat, with sharp features, thin lips and narrow eyes. Her hair is silvery, with a hint of black.

Demeanor: Quite strict and demanding when acting in official capacity, able to put on an attitude that can frighten the daylight out of her peers. Though a harsh mentor, she never undermines the dignity of her students, and very much believes in setting an example for them to look up to. She values persevarence above all, and has never given up on any of her pupils, inspiring them to reach for the stars. Much more amiable in private, she is always surrounded by people when off-duty, and can be described as one of the most popular personalities within the unit.

Serving as an instructor for aspiring MechWarriors at the Coventry Military Academy for twenty years prior to her assignment, First Leutnant Evans has been responsible for the training and integration of recruits ever since she joined McKenna’s unit. Her reasons for abandoning her stable career on Coventry are unknown to most - she much rather pins it on her yearning to see more of the galaxy than the hideous divorce she had to go through. While repeatedly rejecting proposals for promotion over the years, her counsel has become indisposable over the years - while not a ‘de jure’ command member, no one in their right mind would call her input in matters of authority into question. Evans is by no means a backseat commander though, and as the leader of her dedicated training unit, the mid-weight Fennec Lance, she constantly pushes HQ to provide her pupils with opportunities to take the field of battle, often taking on auxiliary missions without the support of Jackal Company’s other elements.

Trivia:

- She has invested a considerable amount of C-Bills in acquiring a military grade jetpack and enjoys taking piloting lessons in her free time.

- Her callsign originates from a questionable habit of carrying a set of throwing knives to any and all occasions.

- There are rumors concerning a romantic relationship between her and Hptm-Komm. McKenna, though both have kept quiet about the subject.

SCARAB COMPANY

Quote
Hauptmann Aðalsteinn Hallúr
Callsign: <HUSKARL>
Occupation: MechWarrior (Veteran)
Homeworld: Rasalhague, Free Rasalhague Republic
Affiliation/Studies: Kungsarmé, Radstadt Academy
Mech/Vehicle: Stalker STK-3F
Status Report: Operational
Personal File:

Appearance: Tall, athletic man with a broad nose and baggy, ice blue eyes. He is bald apart from a small, rough patch of blonde hair on his chin.

Demeanor: Often described as being as proud as he is devoid of humor, Hallúr has been noted for being not only stubborn, but also very resilient to even the most extreme combat stress, quietly plodding on regardless of the situation. A career man at heart, he is a left-brain thinker with incredible logic skills and a strong grasp on mathematics. His estranged demeanor coupled with his noble birth is often mistaken for overt arrogance, though his close colleagues don’t seem to share these superficial opinions. He  refers to himself as emotionally shallow.

Aðalsteinn Hallúr is the lone son of Ólafur and Lukka of House Hallúr, Friherre and Friherreinde of Suðurland on Rasalhague, a prestigious legacy which has set him up for a magnificent career in the newly formed Kungsarmé. With a proud lineage dating back to ancient Iceland, House Hallúr is deeply entrenched within the politics of the FRR, noted for being major shareholders of the Rasalhague Armor Works corporation and staunch supporters of the MotPat since its inception. With the high expectations of a future heir placed on him, Aðalsteinn grew up surrounded by adults, essentially being denied a carefree, simple childhood and living most of his early life in isolation. Though somewhat socially stunted, his incredible intellect made it easy to live up to his parents’ high expectations, absolving many advanced classes and graduating as a young officer from the Radstadt Academy. First signing up with the Rasalhague Militia as a tank commander due to his personal interest in combined arms warfare, he later joined the Gunzburg Eagles piloting an assault ‘Mech, serving with the unit for three years.

Trivia:

- The surprise decision to resign his commission and throw in with a mercenary unit made his parents quite resentful, yet he insisted on it being the right choice, based on the notion of yearning for true combat experience and a singular chance at attaining personal glory.

- He is piloting the family’s heirloom ‘Mech, an ancient Stalker STK-3F, retrofitted with additional communication equipment for enhanced command performance.

Hauptmann John Barnhill
Callsign: <SLEDGE>
Occupation: Tank Commander (Veteran)
Homeworld: Coventry, Lyran Commonwealth
Affiliation/Studies: LCAF, Fourth Lyran Guard, Coventry Military Academy
Mech/Vehicle: Stalker STK-3F
Status Report: Operational
Personal File:

Appearance: Elegant, vigorous man with chiseled facial features, a square chin, brown hair and cold blue eyes. He is always perfectly shaven, and while rarely smiling outright, his mouth is often curling into a smirk.

Demeanor: Barnhill is quite sophisticated both in appearance and conversation, but also very much a straight shooter, unafraid to call both his superiors and subordinates for their shortcomings, despite being kind and caring for the most part. He is a heavyweight in social affairs, using his personal magnetism to great advantage during negotiations and solving conflicts. While not too stuck up, he does prefer distinguished company and is regarded as a rather serious person mostly focused on his professional career.

John Barnhill hailed from a modest family based on Coventry, and served as a tank commander with the Coventry Militia before joining the Fourht Lyran Guard in his early twenties. While his career was rather unspectacular, especially compared to the achievements of some of his peers within the unit, his good strategic sense has set him apart quite early from many of his superior officers. His outspoken nature and pragmatism caused his career within the Lyran military to stall. As the son of a former classmate, Barnhill joined the unit at the personal invitation of First Lt. Alice Evans. She regards him as the single best candidate to replace Hptm-Komm. McKenna as the commander of the Harriers, prominently echoing the confidence he inspires in many of his younger peers aswell.

Trivia:

- He is known to smoke profusely and enjoy expensive cigars.

- Has a reputation of being a heartbreaker, unable to settle for longer relationships in spite of his balanced nature.

First Leutnant Josef Schwinn
Callsign: <HAVOC>
Occupation: Tank Commander (Elite)
Homeworld: Tharkad, Lyran Commonwealth
Affiliation/Studies: LCAF, Nagelring
Mech/Vehicle: Schrek PPC Carrier
Status Report: Operational
Personal File:

Appearance:A gaunt, old man with a long scar running across his cheek. Usually wears a silver-colored wig and fairly aggressive cologne.

Demeanor:
Mellow and friendly, Schwinn is quite approachable for a lonesome old-timer. While not an extrovert per se, he goes out of his way to attend to gatherings and social occasions. He frequently compliments the achievements of his fellow officers. A gentleman and charmeur, he lately became rather withdrawn, causing some concern regarding his well-being among the unit.

The oldest member of the unit, Josef Schwinn saw the tail end of the Third Succession War as a young tanker in the 6th Lyran Guards, transferring to the Third Donegal after the conflict was concluded. He gained notoriety in the following conflict, where he was granted command of a captured Kurita Schrek PPC Carrier, single-handedly fending off a lance of ‘Mechs while securing a primary landing zone on Orestes. Officially retiring from service in 3030, the passing of his wife, Edeltraud Schwinn has caused him to return and take up arms once again, at the behest of Col. Walter Lestrade, to lead the newly formed Harriers’ compliment of heavy vehicles.

Trivia:

- Schwinn and his personnel are one of the very few vehicle crews to have a callsign within the Harrier roster.

- He is a great dancer in spite of his advanced age, though with a rather old-fashioned love for waltzes.

Senior Airmen Rayaan & Rani Siddiqui
Callsign: <ZUBENEL><ZUBENESH>
Occupation: Aerospace Fighter Pilots (Veteran)
Homeworld: Menkent, Lyran Commonwealth
Affiliation/Studies: LCAF, Menkent Militia
Mech/Vehicle: Two Shilone SL-17 Heavy Fighters
Status Report: Operational
Personal File:

Appearance: Identical twins with knee length raven hair, black eyes and thin, borderline emaciated figures. Their beautiful features are suggestive of Assamese Indian ancestry. The easiest way to differentiate them is by looking at their palms - Rani has a prominent dark mole on the base of her left hand.

Demeanor: While both can be described as flirty, cheerful and vain, their personalities are quite different. Rayaan is tough, factual and somewhat cynical, while Rani is fleeting and playful, sometimes quite infantile in her humor.

Rayaan and Rani are the pampered children of a wealthy family hailing from Menkent. Their parents invested greatly in them during their youth - ironically, the twins repaid their efforts with turning their life upside down on more than one occasion. Their insufferable attitudes almost forced their parents to put them into different schools - it was only during their teens that the two have started to bond again. Their incredible reflexes and heightened senses caused them to be picked up by a recruiter for the local navy. Presented with the option of a successful career in the military, they decided to abort their studies and join up with the Menkent Militia. A testament to their talent, they received their wings after only three years, passing their final test with flying colors.

Trivia:

- Flat out gorgeous in appearance and blessed with a great fashion sense, they have been featured prominently as both models and consultants for the unit’s ads and posters on Outreach.

- Their connection with eachother is of almost esoteric magnitude and nature, being able to guess each other’s thoughts with uncanny accuracy  - needless to say, they perform significantly better as a team.

- Fed up with everyone confusing them, they decided together to exploit their incredible resemblance to the fullest, frequently pulling pranks on their peers, especially while dating.

Chief Warrant Officer Viktor Tupolev
Callsign: N/A
Occupation: Technician (Elite)
Homeworld: Galatea, Lyran Commonwealth
Affiliation/Studies: Galatean Bloodsports
Mech/Vehicle: Ural U-125 Mech Recovery Vehicle
Status Report: Operational
Personal File:

Appearance: A huge, rotund man of grotesque proportions. Bull-necked and balding, his dark, thick eyebrows and moustache are the most prominent features on his bulbous, round face.

Demeanor:
Blessed with a booming voice and a staunchly jovial disposition, Viktor’s simple and straightforward way of speech belie his ingenious ways when it comes to any kind of machinery. Bombastic and proud, he is often said to possess the heart of at least three men. He’s as stubborn as an ox however - once he has made up his mind about something, it is nigh impossible to change his mind.

Viktor Tupolev has spent thirty years of his life rising from the filth and muck of Galatea City’s less savory districts into the privileged position he inhabits today. As a brother to six siblings, he became used to hard labor from an early age, helping out in his father’s business peddling and servicing water heaters. He became an AsTech to the gladiator Caleb Amadé in his teens - unfazed by the appalling working conditions and low pay, his talents were instrumental in turning the struggling ‘Mech stable into a working business. Though the hotshot pilot offered him little praise for his incredible handiwork, Viktor managed to become head tech at the age of twenty five, and has kept the stable afloat for almost two decades, despite the personal failings of his employer. The coming of age of ‘Caleb’s Tramps’ changed his life in a delightful way, though his happy-go-lucky attitude changed over time when the fighting culture on Galatea became increasingly hazardous and lethal. Caleb fired him in response to a massive argument and brawl, after which he returned home to take care of his deceased brother’s daughter, a scrawny little bird called Zasha. His departure caused a sharp decline in the stable’s performance, and after the former ace succumbed to his addiction, Katie Keane approached him personally to take up his old job again. While he reluctantly agreed to the offer, he kept asking Katie to step back from her life as a glory seeker, fearing that it would get her killed in the end. While the outcome came as no real surprise to the grizzled veteran, it is safe to say that he would have not endured the loss of his friend so well if it wasn’t for his responsibilities concerning his adoptive daughter. Unsurprisingly, he welcomed Leda’s decision to dissolve the stable and to turn their back on the fallen Mercenary’s Star, seeking to establish a new life with the Harriers. With Zasha coming of age and dabbing her feet in piloting BattleMechs, he quickly managed to regain his spirit and rose to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer in record time.

Trivia:

- Though struggling with alcohol for most of his life, he has been dry ever since the adoption of Zasha.

- His trademark slavic accent and figures of speech (such as referring to himself in the third person) are mimicked by many in the tech department.

NOTABLE EQUIMPENT

CONDOR's Battlemaster

Battered and bruised, the Harriers’ techs barely managed to repair the BattleMaster BLR-1C intended to replace Hauptmann-Kommandant McKenna’s downed machine in time for his release from intensive care. From the many weapon systems on the venerable machine, only the Medium Lasers in the right torso survived the gruelling ordeals of the war, prompting the replacement of the Martell models with more readily avaliable Defiance B3M ones, while the rear-mounted ones were removed completely. The prized Command Console meant that the ‘Mech would quickly become a target against any savvy foe, leading the technicians to bolster its long range firepower by pairing a Lord’s Light PPC with an Artemis IV guided Shigunga LRM-10 system, the latter replacing the left shoulder-mounted SRM-6 of the original. The damaged machine guns and their ammo were replaced with two Defiance A5L Small Lasers. CASE protects the two tons of LRM ammo in the left torso, while fourteen double heat sinks provide sufficient cooling for the ‘Mech to keep utilizing its entire arsenal in a heated engagement. Finally, an extra half ton of standard armor was added to maximize survivability.

RIPPER’S Cyclops

Unable to get their hands on a factory fresh assault BattleMech after the loss of Jansen’s Banshee in a timely fashion, the Harriers purchased the husk that was once a Cyclops from the hangars of the 8th Donegal Guards. The ancient ‘Mech’s Tacticon B-2000 computer was likely rendered inoperable a century ago, its main weapon systems stripped, while it reportedly got cored out after a fateful engagement on Stanzach during the Fourth Succession War, rotting in one of their bays ever since while periodic attempts were made to fix the broken computer. After over eight months of intensive hangar time and an ironically high investment racking up to around 6 million C-Bills, Chief Warrant Officer Viktor Tupolev and his tech team managed to bring the wreck back to life, though in a different role than envisioned by its original creators. Making due with what they had avaliable, they first stapled an underweight Hermes 270 fusion engine salvaged from a Daboku onto the 90 ton chassis. This significantly lowered the speed of the ‘Mech, turning it into a hideous, hulking behemoth, effectively forcing it into a fire support role to cope with the fact that it can’t keep up with faster elements. The tremendous weight saved by this makeshift change allowed for the installation of an immense array of long range weaponry however. Expanding upon the existing and fairly intact sensor package, a single salvaged prototype Gauss-X Rifle was installed in place of the AC-20, sacrificing close range firepower for vastly extended range. A Devastator Series-07 LRM-10 launcher was retrofitted onto the left torso, backed up by an Artemis IV guidance system and three tons of CASE-protected ammo, along with a TharHes Blue SRM-4 pack in the center torso supplied with a single ton of reloads. Finally, two lightweight Cyclops Eye Large Lasers were grafted onto the arms, providing a solid punch at intermediate range and a decent backup weapon system in case the experimental tech ceases to function. Additionally the ‘Mech is protected by 16 tons of standard armor, bringing it in line with other assault designs of similar weight.

FLASH’S Marauder

Formerly First Lt. Leda Keane’s rig, First Lt. Rogan Kerry’s Marauder MAD-5R received a considerable facelift over the years. Despite no major changes in the loadout of the ‘Mech, the Autocannon was replaced with a larger bore Imperator-B type AC-10, made possible by switching the heatsinks to double and reducing their number to twelve. CASE protects the ammo located within the right torso, and eleven tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor provide marginally more protection than the standard loadout.

CHAT'S Longbow

The venerable, ill-fated Longbow of First Leutnant Henriika Luttinen was painstakingly restored to its former glory after First Leutnant Grigory Kazinsky perished due to a brutal LRM barrage from an entrenched launcher battery causing his ejection system to malfunction, snapping his neck as he was launched against the closed cockpit's roof. The Battlemech been retrofitted with Artemis IV guidance system capable launchers, seeking to maximize on the young woman's already uncanny ability to hit targets at the very edge of visual range. An anti-missile system and CASE were added to maximize both 'Mech and pilot survivability, though at the cost of removing nine heat sinks, making the heat-prone machine a prime candidate for the next wave of upgrades.

LUCKY'S Warhammer

Piloting the restored BattleMech of the departed First Leutnant Bear Brunson, Hauptmann Shadi Haynaba supervised most of the changes on the 'Mech herself, the largest being a weapon swap of the SRM-6 launcher to an LRM-5 system, increasing it's fire support abilities. AMS and CASE were added, along with additional communications equipment enabling her to interface better with the 'Mechs and vehicles in her company.

SPHINX'S King Crab

First Lt. Leda Keane inherited her sister’s Galatean duelist Mech after the dissolution of their stable. The single heaviest piece of machinery in the entire batallion, the King Crab KCG-0000’s loadout has been heavily modified, trying to adapt the venerable pitfighter to the modern battlefield by exchanging it’s punishing short range weaponry to an arsenal more effective at intermediate ranges. While not fielding many esoteric components, the claws were retrofitted with two Imperator-B type AC-10s, considerably improving the hulking machine's threat projection. A pair of Lord’s Light PPC-s were added to the right torso, along with a Coventry 90mm SRM-6 launcher, supplied with a ton of CASE-protected ammo. Fourteen double heat sinks provide sufficient heat reduction, while it’s armor has been slightly increased aswell, to a monstrous 16.5 tons.

SLEDGE'S Rhino

Both Rhinos in Hptm. John Barnhill’s Command Platoon have been revamped for enhanced close combat capability. The front-mounted LRM-10 launcher has been replaced by the turret-mounted LRM-20s, while the turret received an additional Medium Laser and a TharHes Blue SRM-4 launcher. CASE and an additional 0.5 tons of armor were added to the lead vehicle, in addition to 3 tons of communication equipment.

CHANGELOG

FLUFF

COMPLETE: changed Titus’ and Deirdre’s last name from McKenzie to McKenna to reinforce the irish roots - Donegal Guard bridge
COMPLETE: Add four original members (and ‘Mechs) who were KIA to add realism
COMPLETE: provide a description for insignia, field and parade uniforms, flags etc.
COMPLETE: provide a tradition blurb

CRUNCH

COMPLETE: added auxiliary Vehicle Platoons (assets would otherwise exceed square batallion size)
COMPLETE: swapped out a Lancelot for a more mundane Dragon due to the former being only realistically avaliable from a Lostech cache or souped down to uselessness
COMPLETE: removed ER MLas from Titus’ Battlemaster - possibly unneccessary though as the ‘Mech itself is a lostech artifact
COMPLETE: swapped out the Marksman Artillery for Ballistas, as the former have become extinct during the Third Succession War
COMPLETE: changed FLASH into a Heavy/Assault ‘Mech for the HQ lance and shift spotting and recon responsibility to attached aerospace for the command group, possibly handing down the Mongoose to KNIVES and using her Commando as a training ‘Mech -> Mongoose swapped to Marauder
COMPLETE: change Sphinx’ KGC-0000 from the quasi analogy of the KGC-010 to a souped down version of that ‘Mech. ER PPC’s are LosTech and almost irreplaceable, and LB 10-X AC can’t be resupplied with ammo.
COMPLETE: change Ripper’s Marauder II MAD-5A to another 100t design. While produced in 3012, the Marauder II was almost exclusively used by Wolf’s Dragoons and Miller’s Marauders until 3067.
COMPLETE: dial down Condor’s Battlemaster - Gauss rifles, even prototype ones are exceedingly rare and supplying one with ammo is enough trouble, Selkie is not a good enough shooter yet to handle one anyways
COMPLETE: switch Piper’s Panther to a faster chassis to keep up with the rest of the lance
COMPLETE: switch Ghost’s Raven to a heavy fire support ‘Mech (Raven is essentially unusable without the EWAR suite and is a Capellan prototype)
COMPLETE: Modify the Triumph dropship’s cargo bays to hold an additional 16-20 light vehicles
COMPLETE: Consider pairing the Demolishers with tanks which have better IVF capabilities -> The standard Patton is actually decent enough
COMPLETE: Strip most of the LosTech weaponry, especially MPLas as they only provide marginal killing power on veteran pilots and weigh twice as much. CASE, Artemis IV and DHS are already rare enough as it stands.
COMPLETE: take a note of this comment and act on it - “The Slayer…is criminally oversinked due to changes in the Aerospace rules from when it was published in TRO3025” -> does not seem to be the case in Destiny
COMPLETE: Note comms equipment on Lucky’s Warhammer and Huskarl’s Stalker when making the record sheets.
COMPLETE: RE-CALCULATE MRB RATING AS THE CURRENT RATING IS BASED ON THE OLD MRBC ONE FROM THE '67 DRAFT

PENDING: bolster aerospace capabilities by adding in 2 Slayer SL-15, swap them with the Chippewas for recon and dogfight duties
PENDING: consider using VTOL in Scorpion Company for Narc roles instead of hovers
PENDING: consider adding a Jumpship that can carry 3 Dropships, the prime candidate being an Invader-class which accounts for almost half of the jump capable vessels in the IS - possibly through a campaign that allows for the capture of a pirate one -> not really worth it, the company is too small and obscure at the moment
PENDING: adding a Jumpship means maxing out on Aerospace fighters - Dropships are like a Kinder Egg when facing massed Aerospace fire or a true military Jumpship and losing either of the main ones would cripple the company and send it spiraling into obscurity
PENDING: consider padding lacking aerospace support with MechBuster conventional fighters. They are a design favored by the Kungsarmé and as such readily avaliable to purchase and supply.
PENDING: consider switching the Triumph to an Excalibur at a later stage (Excalibur capacity: 12 ‘Mechs, 90 Heavy Vehicles, 12 Infantry Platoons)

MRB Rating (based on Dragoon Rating)

Avg. Experience: Regular [+10]
Commander Rating: [+15]
Combat Record Rating: [+40]
     Successful Missions: 15 [+75]
     Failed Missions: 1 [-10]
     Contract Breaches: 1 [-25]
Dropship Capacity: 100% [+25]

Average Experience Rating: (3,1) Veteran [+20]
Equipment Rating: ? (47%, 17 of 36 ‘Mechs are Level 2 equipped, 5 Clan ‘Mechs) [+10]

Note: Equipment Rating cannot work the way it is detailed in 10977 - Field Manual: Mercenaries, considering the setting plays in 3045. My proposition is to count Level 2 as any ‘Mech with former LosTech upgrades. Therefore, any ‘Mechs with an upgrade level of Epsilon or higher are eligible (‘Mechs receiving higher end upgrades always have some tech goodies tacked on). Since the general consensus seems to be that only the largest merc units have widespread access to high tier equipment, the Equipment Rating Table should be readjusted significantly, possibly counting a bump in rating per 5%, starting at F with 5% or less. Which leaves us with:

Equipment Rating: C (17% of Combat Units are Level 2 equipped) [+10]

Technical Support: 76% [+5]
Medical Support: 100% [+10]
Admin Support: 100% [+4]

In debt: 2 early years [-20][0] -> paid off in 3037

Score: 119
Current MRB Rating: B+

DESIGN NOTES

This is a snapshot of the unit in the year of 3045 during their deployment on Holmsbu.

The original draft was based on the FASA-era books ‘01616 Mercenary’s Handbook’ and ‘01701 Field Manual: Mercenaries’. The second pass (including most of the the crunch) was made using the Fanpro books “10977 Field Manual: Mercenaries (Revised)”, “35016 Field Manual: Mercenaries Supplemental” and “Field Manual: 35025 Mercenaries Supplemental II”, with small adjustments made to fit with the Late Succession Wars setting of 3045. Units were designed/modified in SSW.

The unit’s pre-game mission history is based on a series of rolls by the Combat Experience Table found on page 144 of ‘10977 Field Manual: Mercenaries (Revised)’. Notable high and low points were spotlighted in the fluff. While we intend to play out these encounters, the outcome is semi-fixed and will only result in subtle impacts on current gameplay. Similarly, weight, and personnel were rolled, assigned and fleshed out using the force generation system within the aforementioned book, using the unit’s Cash pool to adjust the roster to existing models.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES [ART PROJECT]

- Ideally, create a unit that is of high enough quality to be worthy of getting canonized. Whether it happens or not is of no immediate concern, as long as it ‘sparks joy’ and adds something worthwhile to the universe, perhaps even provide reading material for the community I’d be quite content.

With my primary occupation being that of a media designer, I’d like the challenge of backing it up with a 30-50 page document, which could be mistaken as an official supplement (ommitting copyrighted material of course). Whether a modern, Catalyst-era one or something from the 80s (such as the charming FASA 1616 Mercenary’s Handbook) is still up to debate.

- Create a segway through the artwork-requirements of the supplement (uniforms, flags, insignia, portraits etc.) to dip my feet into digital art.

- Learn how to paint ‘Mechs to a high standard, possibly well enough to attempt joining the CamoSpecs team.

- Take gaming considerations into account, optimizing the switch from CBT stats to Destiny.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES [UNIT]

Protagonists: The unit should be able to provide a protagonist’s perspective within a long, winding campaign stretching over the next few years. Since both of the current players are experienced in various RPG’s it is suffice to say that the stereotypical ‘good guys’ approach runs the danger of falling flat for us. I’m shooting for something more complex, ideally a unit which managed to establish a reputation of reliability and honor early on in their history, and are struggling to keep it as disturbances and the reality of running a growing mercenary business starts to dilute their high standards due to various reasons, including:

   - social tensions within the group due to diverse origins
   - moral obligations colliding with business practices
   - cameraderie vs cold professionalism

Tech-savvy: We’re tinkerers. Simulate tech progression from pre-invasion middling/high tech to post-invasion IS omni with the occasional Clan ‘Mech reserved for elites.

Strong and tight: Emphasize the geometric effect on military efficiency via superior training & superior weaponry.

Clanbuster: Has ample opportunities to fight the Clans.

Cameo: Is well connected enough to feature co-op missions with some canon units.

Do the evolution, baby!: Unit expanding naturally through years of gameplay from the 3045 snapshot onwards.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES [TECH]

- When upgrading or modifying designs, try to stay true to the physical model in question.

- Keep it simple when it comes to upgrades. In the past I’ve been more liberal with upgrading existing Succession Wars era designs and ironing out flaws, trying to maximize armor etc., not really caring all too much about the time it’d take to install these upgrades, the job costs or the quirks and problems that might arise. As far as I know the hierarchy of the upgrade difficulties goes as follows, from hardest to easiest:

[Alpha] Structure (eg. standard to Endo-Steel). A ‘Mech is not a simple machine, replacing it’s structure is akin to replacing a human’s entire skeleton. Costly, difficult, requires special facilities a middling merc company likely doesn’t have access to, even with a real crack tech team.
[Beta] Engine (size). While installing a heavier engine takes a few clicks in any loadout generator, there is no telling whether it will perform as intended in the field. ‘Mechs can become imbalanced or run into heat issues, and an oversight during hangar time can easily lead to the loss of the ‘Mech and the MechWarrior within.
[Gamma] Weapon system swap (eg. energy to ballistic, etc.) While doable, there’s a good reason the Clans came up with standardized OmniMechs. I suspect such a retool still takes weeks, if not months, and goes way beyond the scope of a field refit.
[Delta] Weapon swap (within type, eg. LRM to SRM etc.). Easier than the above, although downscaling or upscaling such a weapon system should take less time and effort than swapping the subtype. While similar in weight, an LRM-5 pack needs a different sensor package and guidance system than an SRM-4.
[Epsilon] QOL upgrades: Mostly Jump Jets, DHS, CASE or AMS, rarely adding Artemis capabilities to launchers. Ferro-fibrous armor falls under this category aswell.
[Zeta] Removing redundant systems. Entering the realm of field refits (as described by TROs and wiki articles), removing anti-personnel weapons present on factory loadouts frees up space on ‘Mechs and vehicles to add more armor or ammo in some cases.
[Theta] Armor upgrades: Additional armor or subtle shifts in armor balancing between locations is an easy and lightweight way to enhance survivability and performance on most designs.
        [Omega] No upgrades

I’m currently trying to remove A and B type upgrades from the roster completely, keeping C type upgrades to a minimum. I’ve kept some D types to make certain designs fit in better with their role, most of them are E or less however.

- Keep LosTech to a minimum. While the Harriers are in a decent position to acquire gear on the higher end of the spectrum due to their deployment (Kurita got a lot of good stuff from ComStar recently), it doesn’t mean that one should strap a Gauss Rifle on every design capable of carrying one only five years after the re-introduction of the system. Double Heat Sinks are probably the single most important upgrade that is both affordable and somewhat avaliable.

- Mind the ammo. Rocking a lot of LRM systems eats into profits, especially specialist ones. AC ammo is less punishing.

Hey there! Thank you, there is more to come, this is just the tip of the iceberg as I really wanted to start assembling some core structure to see what I've got.

As you'll see from the changelog entries, the concept has matured a lot over time - releasing it for the public experts to view and dissect is the next step to ensure there are no glaring errors within either fluff or crunch. I'd ideally like to have the text for the PDF done by the end of March, so I can start working on art during spring and summer.

While I'm not nearly done in posting up relevant material, feel free to comment or discuss anything that's currently avaliable already. I'd like to tidy up the material further for the forum presentation for example, and would love to hear some input on that front.

You are 100% correct about DHS being the single most important upgrade.  Doubling those free heat sinks in the engine is HUGE.

Have you considered posting it on the Battletech Fannon wiki?  Seriously, this is a LOT of work.

*Now that I think of it, there was a fan-created merc book taking units and including them for people to use as OPFORs, etc., but I can't remember who or where.  This would be a great addition to it, though.

Heat Sinks and some type of proto-CASE for vehicles are the most important upgrades I can think of currently, adding Narc and alternative munitions as they become avaliable. Perhaps Blazers too, to use DHS as the powerhouse it's intended to be instead of a convenience thing.

Have you considered posting it on the Battletech Fannon wiki?  Seriously, this is a LOT of work.

I honestly had no clue that one even existed, so thank you for the heads up. It's a good idea to expand this into a resource to be used by other players, so once we'll get the hang of the hybrid system we're playing, I'll likely add scenarios and missions we've played into the mix aswell. Being added to the fandom's merc roster would be pretty awesome, so don't hesitate to throw me a link if you should find it.  ;)

UPDATES:
- Force organization chart added
- MRB Rating fixed

Next I'll add an upgrades section, then try and tidy up some of my character blurbs to start fleshing out that part of the document.

Just to note: If Titus was born in 3020, he'd only be 25 in 3045, hardly old enough to have a daughter of fighting age.

Thank you for pointing that out - to give the mistake context, the 1.5th draft of the unit was planned to be set in 3067, its formation revolving around Operation Guerrero, after which we retconned it and decided to start at a much earlier date. Suffice to say, my documents are a little messy after all the reworks. It will be corrected in the next pass.

Set in 3067, that would work out fine. Maybe use a sister or brother instead.

Alpha Version 0.14 is live!

UPDATES:
 - personal files for First Lt. Luttinen and Hauptmann Norwood have been released!
 - split the main personnel file due to the post limit of ca. 35000 characters (yikes, that's a lot of text)

While I'm a bit behind schedule regarding character descriptions, next week should see the first painted minis roll out, so stay tuned!

Feedback:

Titus is meant to be in his early 50s - I'll likely start posting fixed dates at some point to make sure that nothing like this happens again. Aside from that, I cleaned up the main document and archived all the data from earlier drafts, so discrepancies like this should not really crop up anymore.

Also - love the Alpha Centauri quote!

I totally skimmed over this. Glad that you like it, probably my favorite video game of all time.  :)

Alpha Version 0.15 is live!

UPDATES:
- personal files received a massive update - personal files have been released for all current 'named' characters, namely:
    - First Lt. Rogan Kerry
    - First Lt. Leda Keane
    - First Lt. Alice Evans
    - Hauptmann Aðalsteinn Hallúr
    - Hauptmann John Barnhill
    - First Lt. Josef Schwinn
    - Senior Airmen Rayaan & Rani Siddiqui
    - Chief Warrant Officer Viktor Tupolev

- formatting overhaul, including removing redundant info and giving significant 'Mech entries their own section due to character restrictions

With these changes done, a consolidation and review phase is in order, while I'll be mainly focusing on art and miniatures in the coming weeks.
