New Omni names
« on: 18 March 2018, 11:34:08 »
So i was wondering, with the naming of new Omni Mechs that the Clans would produce.   Would Homeworld animal species be used?  Referenes to mythical creatures?

The existing Clan 'Mechs, Omnis or standard, have wide variety of names and no consistent themes. The Clan Wolf uses "wolf" in several designs but at the same time they have many 'Mechs that don't refer to wolves (Woodsman, Arctic Wolf, Timber Wolf, Gargoyle, Linebacker, go figure). The Ghost Bears are fond of bears in names but again, this is not consistent. Likewise with the Smoke Jaguars and Nova Cats referring to cats.

Still, overall it looks like most Clan 'Mech names refer to animals. Makes sense, given their tribal bent and their totems, though the names aren't necessarily assigned to units that would exhibit traits of their namesake (for example, the Kingfisher). They often use normal animal names, with Homeworld's modified animals being seemingly non-existent, the Nova Cat being an exception (unless i missed something else). Presumably Clan totems shouldn't really be enshrined as 'Mechs, the Blood Spirits certainly didn't like the Star Adders naming a 'Mech Blood Asp (directed as an insult).

Rest of the names have no consistent pattern whatsoever. There are some descriptive ones (Bowman, Skinwalker), some swords and other weapons (Flamberge, Wakazashi, Tomahawk), mythological things (Hades, Jupiter), hunting (Woodsman, Huntsman), basically random words (Linebacker, Pouncer), re-used Star League names (IIC-design)...

Oddly, the Clans favor various gods, especially war gods, for their combat vehicles. Quite ironic, given how they basically venerate 'Mechs as god-like things for warfare.

So, chances are new Clan 'Mechs are named after animals, but if not, it is likely to be something war or aggression related.

Yeah the names of vehicles and aerospace assets were standardized due to the decree of an ilKhan, she saw that even with naming conventions the clans were fracturing and arguing over the smallest thing so she banged head and basically said

Vehicles - Deities/War gods
Omnifighters - names associated with nomadic raiders/tribes/ghengis khan and friends
second line fighters - You like Alexander the Great right? Good, name ALL your second line aerospace assets after stuff related to him.

The names don't follow any convention as Empyrus stated, whilst their might be some common themes amongst certain Clans (Ghost Bears and their bear naming fetish, to the point that they are seemingly running out of bear names to call them and are just using 'Bear' in different languages now, hence Bruin, Kuma etc) the Spirits putting blood/red or variations of into their Mechs, the current era falcons with IMMA BURD!!! (Shrike, Gyrfalcon etc).

But this only lasts a bit, then its all over the bloody place :s

And even that bit of theming has been broken: the Carnivore Assault Tank, for example.

Even this isn't consistent though since there's the Stooping Hawk .

Is the standardrized naming tidbit from the golden century sourcebook?

Personally I wanted the Wolf Empire to use the Werewolf on Solaris as their new medium Omni . . . since they did not have one.  A replacement for Adders, Pouncers and Novas- Ice Ferrets to a lesser degree.

Protomechs are usually named for mythical creatures.

Secondline aerospace fighters, IMHO, are named for battles and personalities of the Greek and Hellenistic (Alexander and post-Alexander) ages.

I've somehow managed to miss those always.
Admittedly i'm not terribly interested in ASFs (more of a conventional fighter fan...) but still.

Anything not an Omni is considered Secondline!
