Our feature this fortnight is the Atlas family (or, if you prefer, trilogy).  The Atlas, may be one of the most well-known 'Mechs from TRO 3025.  It was the precursor to other fearsome 'Mechs of later years, the Atlas II and Atlas III.  If you'd like to learn more about using these in play, each of them has their own 'Mech of the Week article.

The Atlas has been available in many forms throughout the years:
  • The first sculpt released by Ral Partha (20-845).
  • A resin sculpt released by Armorcast.
  • A plastic sculpt released as part of the PlasTech set.
  • A resculpt released by either Ral Partha or Iron Wind Metals (I'm not clear on the timing) (20-942).  This sculpt features hexagons in armor plates, not too unlike the scales featured on other older sculpts.
  • A sculpt for the beginners set, currently available from Iron Wind Metals as part of the Assault Lance Pack (10-040).
  • The current modern resculpt released by Iron Wind Metals (20-942RE).
  • A limited edition resculpt of a jumping Atlas (ATLASLTD-12, not currently available).
  • A BattleForce-scale sculpt, probably based either on the second or third sculpts (20-9109).
  • A museum-scale sculpt, probably based on the second sculpt since it has hexagons in the armor plates as well (DL-679).
  • And, finally, the plastic mini used in the modern box sets and CGL's Assault Lance pack, probably based on the beginners set sculpt.
Curiously, most of the Atlas sculpts claim to be for the AS7-D (the original from TRO 3025) but closer match the art for the AS7-K (from TRO 3050).  IWM's site currently says the 20-942RE sculpt is for the AS7-K model.

The Atlas II and Atlas III only have one sculpt each:
If you have any 'Mechs you have painted, please feel free to post them.  We'd all love to see them!

Like always, thank you for reading and a special thank you to those who will paint and share!

Our next two fortnights will be: (Dates are approximations)
  • Clan (1/28): Stone Rhino (Behemoth)
  • Inner Sphere (2/11): Victor and Lu Wei Bing

First is a resculpt Atlas (in Lyran Guard colors) with its tool of persuasion.

Second is an old sculpt Atlas in Lyran Royal Guards colors (and obviously the older paint job...)

And the last one is a Atlas II in Royal Guards colors.

"A 'Mech as powerful as possible, as impenetrable as possible, and as ugly and foreboding as conceivable, so that fear itself will be our ally."  -Aleksandr Kerensky

What he said.  8)

First we have a second resculpt in colors from the 1st Federated Suns Armored Cavalry.

Next is the first resculpt with my attempt to match the picture from IWM's catalog (which I now know was painted in the colors of the Hsien Hotheads.)

Third is another second resculpt in a poor attempt at some Kurita colors.

And last are two plastic versions from the AS lance packs.  They are WIPs for my Illician Lancer battalion.  Didn't have enough time to finish them up for this.  Such is life  :) .

BTW, what is the thing on the Atlas' left hip above the LRM pack?  To this day I can't figure out what it was supposed to be.

I love this mech so much, yet the first Ral Partha mini is the only one I can accept. I hope we get one day a MWO derived mini, or at least something along the way. Shimmering Swords surely needs another job ^-^

"The large aperture between the two missile systems may look like another weapon, but it is the omnicoupling, where power and coolant cables can be attached to start up or repair the Atlas."

At one point, I had a Fatlas Plastech Atlas, acquired in a set of other Mechs. Gave it away because I just didn't care for how it looked. Liked the old Ral Partha one better, since it fit the artwork on the Wizards of the Coast CCG card.

Almost wish I had it to display for this thread.

Let's see what I can dig up. These are fun when I remember to get to them.

Got a whole mix of sculpts: Atlas III in 8th Crucis Lancers colours, Atlas II for Stone's Lament, Jumping Atlas in a custom scheme, and a standard model in the Ryuken-Ni, with added weapon effects.

I love the Beginner set version as it captures the very first artwork from TRO3025. So i have several of these.

First to show Prince Ian Davions personal ride in the old colors of the DBoG.
Then i have it in colors of the Skye Rangers.

And i also have one from the AS lance packs - little modified to make a difference.
It is painted in the colors of the 5th Crucis Lancers with some personal modification.

And while i don't like the sculpt at all, it was a good choice to follow Gunjis paint along.
I painted my Atlas II as the personal ride of the Founder Nicolas Kerensky.

There must be some first sculpt and also 2nd and 3rd sculpts version in the box. But i have no pictures of them and will not go through the storage to find them.

I know this is a bit old, but I didn't see anyone post the BattleForce sculpt of the Atlas. Here it is, brand new and unpainted, next to the first and second Battletech sculpts for comparison.

I love the conversion work on the Kerrensky atlas! It has the girth I feel is always lacking in the sculpts

The mini that started it all...

Once, long ago their were these places called Malls... And in those malls, were smoke shops. Now you would think that in a smoke shop their would be all kinds of smoke producing items (and there were), but they were also notorious for having some of the coolest things. Marble chest boards with metal medieval pieces, knives and swords, and miniatures with little crystals set in them (the original Bedazzler). Sometime, just sometimes, you could find a mini that they couldn't figure out where to set the crystal, which brings us full circle to "The mini that started it all".

My very first mini - AS7-D Atlas

While all my friends were painting fantasy miniatures, I started with Battletech. Not knowing about acrylics, I used the enamels I had at the time (Testors)... As to the paint scheme, my 16-17 year old self thought the black with red eyes was the height of cool, and was especially proud of the painted brown earth with little plants painted on... See what horrible things happened before the internet.

This mini is over 30 years old. I will never repaint it, because it is a starting point. When I'm unhappy with some other piece I've finished, it helps remind me how far I've come and that practice, patience and a willingness to learn can bring you a long way.

Now on to others...

Davion - Albion Military Academy

Note: This Mech was painted in the early 90s, before I knew what colors the paint scheme for the school was... It is also from a time when I used brush on polyurethane to seal my minis. This was a huge mistake because it tends to age yellow/brown (it destroyed my original 23rd Arcturan Guards and made those 4 the only Mechs I've ever striped and repainted), but that isn't a problem on brown... Where it becomes a problem, is that I think over time the flock is getting imbedded in the sealer, as I can not get that debris off without scraping it off.

Next is a little PlasTech Atlas love (Fat-lases need love too).

Davion - Brigade of Guards - Assault Guards RCT

Steiner - 23rd Arcturan Guards

Custom - My Wife's Atlas "Mac"

The three PlasTech Atlases show a progression of added detail, that should culminate with the next one, if I ever get around to doing it.

Anyway, those are the five Atlases I currently have painted (for better or worse).

I know I'm quite late on this one, but here you go.  An Atlas belonging to the 1st Kathil Uhlans.
